moles usually leave LARGE mounds of earth around...voles, are so much smaller ( at least they are around here) they just seem to dig near plants ( to eat the roots? who knows?) and moles also seems to travel farther underground...around my house near the stone walls, you can see MOUNDS of earth, in the fields of grass, they don't seem to go into gardens as much as chipmunks, voles do.
LOL - just imagining the chipmunks bowling with the moth balls...

-
Well it sort of does sound like what I have is moles then. The mounds a quite large, and everywhere. My DH saw one of them running along the house one day, and said it sort of looked like a large mouse or a small rat.
-
kira
voles are SO tiny, just adorable - google them for a pic...really cuties. Moles have very funny looking feet ( IMHO)
-
funny looking feet AND funny looking noses - I think they're ugly, but that could be partly because of the large amounts of money we've had to pay through the years to get rid of 'em.... (talking about moles - I've never seen a vole)
-
Well what we have are not small, and they are not cute (IMHO). But will add they seem to be taking over my yard which I really don't like. Our grass service is putting something done to get rid of the grubs so I'm thinking it's not working.
-
Speaking of vermin that laughs at stuff put out to kill it, we had a sewer rat come through the waste pipe and under our basement floor. The people who had installed the french drain and sump pump had made a hole in the waste pipe from the basement toilet to the main sewer line, and the sewer rat came in and under the floor. We heard it under the concrete floor squeaking and digging! We put a large rat bait (1" square) in the floor drain, and the next day IT WAS GONE!!! That damn thing had carried the poison bait off. It was probably snacking on it! We jackhammered up the floor around the toilet and fixed the waste pipe (with sheet metal and a clamp). No more sewer rat. So yes, sometimes the stuff we use to kill 'em just makes 'em madder.

HL - a friend had to do the same thing - they really are determined creatures, rats are.
This is for BLUE
- my friend, how can we "neigh, neigh" with a bandaid???
It was clever, putting it in the DCIS to start - recruiting? Good it's where it belongs now.
-
hahaha Sunflowers. To me it looks like someone is talking to herself and disagreeing. Now I've seen it all!

I do think that pony has returned.....even Maud has dropped out.....

And painterly has left because her post got deleted. Well our little cowgirl is getting her way. I think I'll stick to me knittin'.

Since I am sure we are being read by multicolored hooves, maybe the following BCO rule can be taken to heart:

You may be sure I may be sure we all may be sure but unless the moderaters are sure it is but dust in the wind. Multicolored sparkly unicorn dust.

I think of it as a "containment" policy, rosemary - but I'm not crossing my fingers. :-)

Good morning all! I popped back in just in time to see that some things never change. Guess somebody got bored and felt the need to stir the pot and endanger a few breast cancer patients ... ugh.
I don't come here much anymore ... just to check on you all. I also don't refer people here anymore. Just can't justify the total lack of quality control in a discussion board known to be owned by a medical doctor. Some of the poop floating to the top here is just plain dangerous.
Read somewhere that peeing in their tunnels will get rid of moles. Have no personal experience to back that up though
Hubby has been trapping our chipmunks and taking them to a wooded area to hopefully find a new home.We need rain! And it is friggin hot!
In other news a mama cat seems to have decided our yard is a good place for her kitten to live. Tiny little bundle of fur it is. Heard it long before we could even get a look at it and mama was coming around to feed it. But I think she has stopped now. We thought it was going to be wild but after a couple of weeks have achieved purry, lap kitten status. Off to the vet next week now that I can pick it up. Picture is hoping to tempt somebody ... because it needs a home. My 14 year old cat cannot handle a kitten ... so much as I want to keep it all for myself I really can't. Will deliver!

Going to go read back now and see what all I have missed. Hope everybody has a wonderful weekend!
-
WhiteRabbit what a cute Kittie. We recently lost our 17 year old cat. This is the last one for us, but do miss her. I do still have 2 dogs that keep my life exciting. The shelty hasn't figured out she's not a puppy and more, and she is 5 so thinking she never will.
Another rather gray day with that storm in the gulf. Sunny Floriday sure hasn't been sunny this week. At least it's keeping the tmpatures down for us.
-
Painterly posted a beautiful, beautiful poem she wrote in the "creative thread" - so sad to see a lovely spirit like she has get slammed. Athena keeps posting the relevant BCO rule, wonder why it's not enforced?
BTW, I think it's more a four letter word beginng with l and ending with n, than a sparkling pony...IMHO

or, put another way, someone who is "nufing tucks"

tee, hee...I shudda known the Lioness would find the perfect words...hope it's cool under the acaia tree...

WR
I love your avatar.
I am now trying to get out of a medication induced funk. I was on Topamax for two weeks and started to feel so depressed that all I wanted to do was cry. I quit taking it yesterday but am still so sad. I have been depressed before when life seemed overwhelming but it still sucks. My DH says I should feel better in a couple of weeks. I hope so.
-
Rosemary - some doctors call Topamax "Dopamax" because of the cognitive side effects and intellectual funk. Hope you feel better soon.
-
Yep Athena
It was like chemo brain but not as bad. I was sooo tired but couldn't get to sleep at night, there was a knot in my stomach and I was just so sad. Oh yes and then there were the random white balls of light in my field of vision. Nasty stuff that. I am off of it and am taking clonazapam.(sp?)
I really do understand people who don't want to take meds. There are some, however, thsat are allowing me to function oh and breathe, both good things.
-
Topamax is rarely prescribed for mood disorders anymore. Studies have shown it to have very little effect for most people. It was seen as promising early in the last decade, then that hype sort of faded when clinical trials failed to show the anticipated results. I never personally liked it.
-
Klonopin? It's good for anxiety and sleep for some people. It used to work for me but hasn't for years. However, it helps many people.
-
I am trying to get essential tremors under control again. I take primidone and that helped a lot for almost ten years but now I need something else. The other drugs usually prescribed are beta blockers and those make my asthma REALLY bad. So we are looking at third line therapies, things that sometimes help.
The neurologist did say he had patients on twice as much primidone as I am on but it upsets my stomach so he wanted to try something else. I am about ready to just be nauseous and deal with it.
The tremors are somewhat better today. That is another thing. The Topamax did nothing for the tremors.
-
Oh, so you take it as an anti-convulsant - I see. Sorry that it doesn't work.:(
-
Do you ever get the feeling you're being watched?

WR, the kitty is gorgeous! Good luck finding her (him?) a home. I would if I didn't already have three litties (in a 1-bedroom apartment, no less!) because I couldn't resist a sweet face when I already had two. They are all girls: Lucy, Lovey, and Swiffer. It helps tremendously to have an automatic litter box (a Litter Robot - best money I ever spent on them). My landlady is astonished the place doesn't smell like cat. Also, a cat tree in the front window gives them vertical space as well as another approved place to scratch (second-best money I ever spent on them).
Swiffer, aka the sweet face I couldn't resist:

Lucy, born feral, trapped at 5 wks, fixed and mine at 8 wks:

Lucy more recently:

Lovey, aka Mrs. Thurston Howell III:

Swiffer and Lovey chilling in the cat tree:

The Litter-Robot - http://www.litter-robot.com/litter-robot.aspx?id=13 Warning - it IS expensive. It's weight-activated to clean 5 minutes after the cat leaves. As the globe rotates, it sifts and then dumps the clumps down below. It then rotates back, spreading the litter back into place. And with 3 cats, I still only have to change the bag in the collection drawer every two or three days:

And to end on a high note, I saw this online and really liked it:

And the fallout from THIS story made my day, if not my year: I'm pretty sure most have heard about the 68 year-old school bus monitor in New York state who was verbally abused by four 7th graders to the point of making her cry, whereupon they mocked her for crying. One of them video-taped the incident and put it on the internet (Facebook originally, but it quickly jumped to YouTube) so that more people could mock her, too.
Instead, people are outraged, calling for their expulsion this autumn. One man who was sickened by the video set up a website so people could donate enough money for her to take a nice long vacation during summer break.
http://www.indiegogo.com/loveforkarenhklein
In about 4 days, people have already donated over $632,000, with many wishing her a happy retirement. Sometimes good people DO finish first.

Athena
Not for sezures, just tremors. It is a familial thing. As we say around here, "Do you want fries with those shakes?" Sorry if that offends anyune. You have to laugh or you'll cry sometimes.
-
riley, your post made my day, which has sucked so far. (My M.I.L. is in the hospital with an intestinal obstruction, and everybody is trying to decide whether it will go away on its own or will require surgery. She's 90 years old, so surgery is a dismal option; but leaving the darn thing in there and calling hospice sux even more.)
I love the name "Swiffer" for a long-haired cat. Wish I'd thought of it. Oh. I don't have a cat anymore. <sigh> Maybe next time. I also love the cat tree. That would make indoor life much more tolerable for an outdoor-inclined cat. Heck, it would make life more tolerable for any cat.

[snipped paragraph I wrote about relative's dog peeing on the carpet in the (relative's) family room, and me wishing there was a cleaning robot for that]
I saw that "Take what you need" poster elsewhere -- probably on FB. It made me smile. Reminded me of an insurance commercial where each person sees someone else do something good/kind/helpful, which leads that person to pay it forward to yet another person. Here's another version of the poster:

I hope everybody's day is clear and sunny. Wish I could say "cool", but that's not happening here where I am. Maybe it is where you are.
