Survivor, pass me the lavendar esential oils!!!
-
Hi Joanne- In essence what we are trying to do at our "sitting" jobs is getting up from our desks and doing some simple exercises such as jumping jacks or wall push ups once every hour. If you, however, recently had surgery I would not do them just yet, as it requires a full range of motion of your arms. I had my surgery more than a year ago, so I can do arm liftings, but even six months ago I would not have done jumping jacks.
-
Thanks survivorwoman,
I am going to physio for just that. Funny thing is that I told the Physio about you and the jumping jacks and how I couldn't do them if I tried.
Something for me to aim for.
-
Exactly Joanne. There is no rush. You will heal, your body will heal, but it takes a long time. Then jumping jacks will be fun.
-
Joanne, Good for you for going to physio. They will have you getting your range of motion back in no time. I do a lot of stretches recommended to me by my surgeon and they really work and they feel good. I've made them a permanent part of my fitness "regime."
Run/jog today for 5 k. pushups and crunches. Going out for dinner. Yippee.
-
Cath, have some wine and dessert for me too!
Did some wall push ups yesterday and 15 jumping jacks in the restroom too! HA!! Only 15 as I needed my shoes off. Low back pain comes and goes, and Springie, I do those yoga happy babies religiously with no relief, I scheduled a chiro visit right after work today. Couldn't do yoga last night as DD needed me to babysit, I was pooped. Just finished my lunch walk and a storm is a brewin...Oh last Saturday there was an event at the mall held by Kaiser, my health organization, a Thrive to Walk event at 8am, 2,000 people were there, we got a free t-shirt, pedometer and visited different stations around the mall to learn about health and doctors were all over the place. I made my DH go, even though he didn't want to, but he enjoyed it. Joined the walking club, why not since I walk there almost daily!
By the way, I smile pretty big when I do the exercises during the work day, thinking of you ladies!
-
Zero jumping jacks but I did manage 30 on the elliptical. This is 15 less than normal, but at least I did something!
Kari, sorry about the low back pain. Did they chiro help? That's what I need to do when I can't fix it myself with yoga. I need to go about once every few months to get straightened out!
-
Well, girls, I'm officially on the jumping jacks bandwagon. I got up from my desk and did 20 of them today out on my patio. Boy, those are harder than I remember! And I felt oddly uncoordinated -- like I might trip over my own feet or something. It also felt a bit like a chemobrain thing where I had to really concentrate on what I was doing. And my little dog just stood in the doorway with a very quizzical look and refused to come any closer!
Aside from jumping jacks today, I've been walking at least 2 miles each a.m. with our new dog, Teek, and going to the gym each evening with DH to ride bikes and do weights. I miss my longer walks and have to figure out a way to walk the dog and still get in some extra miles, which would be too much for him. In fact yesterday, when we got to our halfway turnaround point, he had to plop down on some grass to rest for a few minutes before we headed back.
Hope everyone's having a good week! Deanna

It's great to hear you all are doing well and enjoying exercising. Yes, I agree, jumping jacks are not so easy to do and I do have some pain in my calves too. And I thought those were Herceptin's side effects. I guess, we are building muscles there!? I tried Kari's wall push-ups and now I alternate those with jumping jacks at work. I think any exercise, even the smallest, like yoga for the eyes is good for us. But I did read on Livestrong's website about the benefits of jumping jacks. I was just curious why I felt a bit -may I say?-happier after doing them...well....here it is: http://www.livestrong.com/article/460979-benefits-of-jumping-jacks/
Deanna:perhaps a small doggy comfort wagon would work for Teek. When he gets too tired, he can just jump in and off you go on your long walks. http://www.pettravelcenter.com/products/detail/710/11
Kari- hope chiro helps your back pain. Last time, when I went for a tui-na massage in Chinatown the man hit a spot on my lower back too that was very painful. He said that was from sitting too much. I was like ... no kidding..I need to get up more from my desk at work. Or just wearing high heels can trigger back-aches. In my case at least.
Spring- 30 min on the elliptical is awesome! You made up for your usual 45 by doing the jumping jacks at work. And what a weird week you are having at work anyway! Hoo Boy!
Cath - Great workout! 5k walk/run. You get an A+. Hope you are feeling better emotionally. How was your dinner?
Joy, Kate, Harley,Blessings, Joanna - how are things? Thinking of you ladies.

Eye yoga from my yoga book.

Saw chiro, back and upper back/neck were all out of whack! much better today, he gave me some exercises to help build legs/butt/balance. I need those!!! Funny, he first started with this stretch, he said ok let's do downward dog and we were both doing it in the little room then he moved one leg up and ended up as a stretch down the front leg, well I sailed right through that and he laughed, said "ok well forget that one, you don't need that, you're really flexible" It was quite comical how we were both all on the floor doing this exercise. The other 2 exercises I practiced last night, not that easy for me!! These will also help with my bone density!! No high heels for me Survivor, its the sitting that gets to me.
I can do 100 jumping jacks pretty good now, I remember when getting to 50 was an accomplishment. I just have to really stretch my calves good!! my elbow ached a bit last night so I have to be careful to not do too many wall tricep pushups, these are the ones a yoga instructor showed me to help with the low plank holds...put your arms directly in front of you and down just a bit on the wall, shoulder with and you bend your arms directly down until your elbows touch the wall slow, this is a really good tricep builder ladies!! if you need that, I know I do! Then I move my arms to different widths and do regular wall push ups. My LE therapist told me to do wall push ups in lieu of regular ones to help avoid LE in my hand.
Deanna, your doggy issue is what my DD deals with, she has to do separate walks/outings for the doggies.
-
Very quick flyby for me today... expecting house guests this afternoon and must get off the computer and get some things done! But I just came across this link that looked relevant to those of us who spend a lot of time @ our desks...
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/office-ergonomics/MY01460
Love the doggy push thing, survivor, but I think I'm going to have to do what Kari's DD does, at least for now. And thanks for the eye yoga info'. At first I thought the photos were amusing, but I suppose it's a good thing if it actually improves eyesight! Deanna
-
UPDATE: Just saw my pcp and she poo poo'd the jumping jacks! I asked her why and she said its to quick of a motion and you could really injure your calves, even if you stretch well!!!!!!!!!!!! I saw her for something unrelated and then mentioned that I've been doing jumping jacks...
-
Oooo
oooO Thanks for the info Kari. OK, so we now have to find something else? Any ideas ladies?
-
I do hope the weather improves here tomorrow as I would love to go for a long bike ride.Today we had rain. Non-stop. I was only able to take a nice long walk. I so much would like to do my exercising outside tomorrow......
-
Today we had snow and freezing rain -- the rest of the week it is to warm up -- seasonally warm here in Hamilton, Canada.
-
I'm sticking wtih the jumping jacks! I do them in little sets. Did you do 100 at the same time Kari?? I did 30 today, all at once and it felt good! I don't jump that much (small hops) but I really move my arms.
90 Yoga tonight, and boy did I need it. Work was a nightmare!
Survivor, we do some of those eye exercises sometimes in Yoga class. Or when we're doing a stretch and holding it, she'll tell us to also stretch our eyes! You never think of these things!
Joanne, it's going to be 78 in Raleigh tomorrow I think!!! :O (Wish I could skip work and bike!) and I'm not sure if we'll have a biking weekend, but I hope so...
Deanna, is Teek little or a puppy? Do you think he'll work up to longer walks?
-
Spring - It's funny how your yoga instructor makes you stretch your eyes. My instructor tells us to stick out our tongue and roar.
I mean, what's up with that? Apparently, it helps to relax the jaw muscles. And I need that - Herceptin is making my jaw and head hurt.
-
Joanne- while you are still in "recovery mode" and can't do much outside, maybe you could check out this breathing exercise. We did this in our last yoga class.
-
Thanks Survivorwoman - very good - interesting.
I am going to go to a yoga class on Friday morning -- at the Physio Clinic -- see how that goes.
I am walking - not as far as I would like to but some of it is the weather right now. I am going to look into Aqua Fit classes also - there is a pool close to my house and I think that would also be very good for my arm.
I am going to try jumping jacks tomorrow - I am sure I can't come near your #s but will aim for 15.
-
Joanne- please be careful. You just had surgery, right? I would wait with the jumping jacks. A bit of gentle yoga might be all right, if your doctor gave you the OK. Please, don't rush with exercising until you are cleared for it. Even meditations help the body heal. I would meditate twice a day for 15 minutes.
-
Dinner was fabulous. I skipped dessert, but I had a lovely glass of Cabernet. I ditched the wig and didn't feel too strange---kind of felt like life was normal again.
What about doing knee lifts and heel jacks? I'm doing heel jacks. I like them.
Deanna: love the name teek. I used to kind of exhaust my puppy on our walks, so we would sit down together on a park bench until she was ready to go home. I miss that.
Meditation. I wish I could get in the habit of it. I've had many health professionals recommend it.
Snow storm here. Unbelievable! I was hoping to get my bike out.
Pilates and elliptical workout tomorrow. -
Great work out last night, I'm sore today! I dont' know about the poo pooing of jumping jacks. It is different if you're doing a 100 at night as your ownly exercise. But, when it is getting you up and moving at work when you'd otherwise be sitting? If you feel it gets your hear rate up while you're doing it? There is enough evidence that those are good things.
-
I was doing 100 at a time and hence the calf problems. I will still do them, but do them slow and in smaller increments (poo poo on my pcp! LOL) I did some stretching then 20 slow jumping jacks then stretched again after, it was fine! Missed my walk yesterday, boo hoo
Joanne, enjoy yoga! Cath, a nice Cabnernet is so good!
C-C-Cold storm blew through and its been chilly, but we will get back in the 60's soon, Spring-I want your 70's!!
-
OMG! Kari! I only did a 100 jumping jacks all together! That is, I do 15 every hour that adds up to 100 a day during work. No wonder you had a calf issue and so much pain. You poor thing! OoooooNooooo!
-
I am back from the dentist. Woke up with excruciating pain. Once again, the dentist found no issue with my tooth. Sent me home. I am getting tired of of this. I'm on another thread talking to women who take Herceptin. It seems to be a side effect of it.
I think I am going for a walk and some jumping jacks by the lake.
-
I ended up going for a bike ride for about an hour today and also managed to do a bit of yoga too.
-
Survivor, so you think the tooth pain is from the Herceptin? Others are experiencing the same issue also? That's awful. How many more Herceptin treatments do you have to get? hugs
Well I didn't do squat yesterday...went to lunch with a coworker to Whole Foods, it was so cold out, I had their lentil spinach low sodium soup, it was sooooooo good and warmed me up. DH got home yesterday so we had dinner pretty much when I got home and just vegged out, both of us pooped. So I will go for my walk in an hour at lunch after 2 days of no walking...
DH had both of our Electra bikes (3 speeds) upgraded by our bike shop into 8 speeds and DH just texted me that he just picked my bike up! The bike shop guys love our bikes!!!! So we now have custom bikes and the weather will be in the 70's this weekend (hoping its true) so we can take them for a spin!! yay
