It's so nice here today, I've got a few windows open!  Can't believe my son is having snow and sleet in San Diego.

Just walked the dogs and saw 4 deer in the fields running through the woods.  Tank took off after them, but thankfully, he came back when I called him.  Good thing Maggie was on a leash, because she wouldn't come back!

Rabbit .. I haven't done my taxes yet.  There is no rush, I don't owe money and don't get any back.  I'd be more interested in filing if I got some kind of return back.

I miss Blue.  I need to call her sometime this week.

    hugs to all,

    Bren

It is good to be back. The retreat did make me want to retreat (good one Linda) but I did enjoy the sand sculpture and boat building.

    Missing Blue.

Missing Blue too but not wanting to put much pressure. Sometimes, hibernation is just what is needed, so hoping she is having a nice quiet time in her winter den. Glad you had a nice time, Barbara. It's good to be thrown in a different environment. It sort of cleanses the stressed system sometimes.

Yikes, "don't talk to me" about taxes. Money mouthYellInnocent

Taxes, what are taxes? My paperwork is nice and snug in its folder waiting for me to panic.

Taxes...I LOVE taxes this year. Can you tell we're getting a big refund on federal and state. Got to thank all the medical bills for that. Last year we paid BIG time....

We're having another possibility of snow here tonight. I doubt it will be much, though.

As far as taxes go, we had to pay big time last year because my husband hadn't changed his exemptions even though the kids were no longer our dependents. I've been nagging him all year to change his withholding-he finally did it the last pay period in December. So...we still have to pay this year....argh. He was claiming 5 exemptions! I asked him if he was claiming our daughter's dog, as well as the 2 kids?? What a mess, but hopefully, next year will be better.

Barbara-I'm guessing "cold" in Florida is considered a heat wave here in Seattle.  I always hated the "team competition" days at summer camp. I don't think I would like "team building" retreats.

I envy you girls your cold weather. Now tomorrow is the first day of Autumn and we have a heat wave predicted - we can't win. We really don't have 4 seasons here, just 2 long Summer and short Winter. I guess that's why it's called a sub tropical climate.

Susie, we have two seasons here: summer and not summer. Summer where I live is way cooler than DC, I have to say. Even the hottest day I have experienced was only 94. And we always have a lovely breeze/wind. I do NOT miss DC in summer. Arrgghhh! You can't even see the sun! It is a hazy ball of gray light in August. At least here I see blue sky.

Good luck, Bren.  It's great to be able to take advantage of the low rates (they won't stay this low forever).

Taxes... grrrr......  My dh has our taxes all ready to mail, except for one item we haven't resolved that has to do with the same issue on my mom & dad's taxes.  Something was credited to them on their 1099 that should have been credited to me.  It's a complicated situation, and it's the reason people hire lawyers to help settle estates and file decedents' taxes.  So I have to call the lawyer today, once I figure out exactly what it is I need to ask him.

One thing I've learned through all of this is... no, two things:

    1) Be sure you have a will, so your stuff goes to the people who deserve it.  For instance, dh and I have no children of our own.  His son (my stepson) is the logical person to receive our stuff when we die.  But, according to the inheritance laws in most states, if a step-parent dies without a will, the stepchildren get nothing -- they are not in the line of inheritance unless they've been legally adopted by the step-parent. A will can fix that.

    2) If possible, make sure all your monetary assets have a designated benficiary, or a "Transfer-on-death" or "payable-on-death" designation.  That way, your bank accounts, money market accounts, certificates of deposit, or even any stock you might own, will go directly to the designated recipient, without having to go through probate or be sorted out through your will.

Enough.  I have to work on those taxes so I can call the atty. this afternoon.

It is said that in Ontario we have two seasons: winter and construction. Really we have a wonderful spectum of weather so that whatever you like will happen here if you just wait long enough ranging from bitterly cold to very hot. This year we kind of missed out on some of the usual winter.  In my part of the province, we hardly even have any snowbanks and (brown) grass has been showing on and off all winter. Having said that, we are told there will be snow today. Might get a new shovel. And remember to wear my LE sleeve when I shovel.

It is raining and supposed to get up to 50 today. Crazy weather. Even Lake Superior has not frozen over.

I went by a convenience store close to a small lake that had a sign that said,"Winter Bait, Not Sure Why."

Thanks Otter!  I talked to a loan broker and I'm waiting for her to call me back.  She's going to crunch some numbers.  My interest rate right now is 6.625 ... that's outrageous!  I sure hope we can work this out.  She said there's some new program out there for people like me.  I tried the govt Making Home Affordable program, and after a year in the process, they turned me down because I never missed a payment.  I'm on pins and needles right now!

Need to get the monthly mortgage lowered so I can purchase life insurance.  I agree that now is the time to plan ahead.  And I'm finally doing it.  The house is in my name only, so if something happens to me, Tim is screwed.

Supposed to be beautiful tomorrow, then rain for two days ... and then the sun comes out again!  I'm so glad spring and daylight savings time are almost here.

Hope everyone is having a good day,

    Bren

    good morning ladies!

so I have been reading the news and I found this quote about the Declaration of Independence from a speech given last night by someone somewhere in the galaxy. . . .

"the men and women who signed that declaration wrote the final phrase, "We pledge to each other our lives, our fortune, and our sacred honor."

What a swell quote well except for that the teeny weeney distraction of the fact that there were NO WOMEN SIGNERS OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.

    Hellfire, we women haven't even had the blinking vote for a 100 years yet. . . . . .

Sigh.  And I thought that it was scary in college geography when people couldn't find Beruit on the map and we had troops there at the time. . . .

I think I shall be pounding US History into the monsters' heads starting right about NOW...

    Have a great day!

ps it snowed this morning....just not enough to delay work....paugh!

    Hi Friends!

I have good news .. I'm pretty sure my mortgage is going to be refi-ed two points lower than it is now.  Yay!  It's a long and complicated process, but will be so worth it.  The broker said it will take about 90 days because so many people are refi-ing right now.  I'm also going to talk to my insurance agent about either a term or whole life policy for both of us.

Taking care of business is exhausting!  But it feels good to actually be getting something done.

Hope everyone is having a good day!

Thanks for the alert about apple, Sunflowers. I wasn't aware.

    AnneW~

That is so sad about Davy Jones.  In elementary school some friends and I recorded ourselves singing The Monkees songs and mailed it to them.  They actually replied and thanked us for our music!  I used to love their TV show...

4am in western ma, and looks like we may actually get that foot of snow - really is so incredibly beautiful here...

Missing Blue too, but hope she's having a healing time.

Sunflowers what on earth are you doing up at 4? I get up at 5 so for me, normal, but 4? Not if I don't have to!

    ((Apple))

Bren, great news on tjhe refi. I wish I could but they would probably make me pay $ to refi since the values have dropped so much. A shame, since I plunked 150K down on this house. Yell

Barbara ... ask your lender about the HARP program.  I'm not going to end having to pay any closing costs.  At the most .. maybe $100.

It's worth a try.  There's a 90-day wait because this new program is so popular. It's especially worthwhile if you owe more than your home is valued.

I read Apple's thread and I'm so sorry she is faced with this.  I hope the WBR knocks those mets to the curb.

Got a note from Allison's daughter .. she is still hanging on.  What a strong heart she has.

I hope everyone has a great day.
