Hey ladies!! #3 AC done, and the extra antibiotics are carrying me through. No missed school since treatment day last Tuesday. Whoo-hooo!!
Staying hydrated was getting harder because everything tastes like nasty bathwater(g.ale), or it's too strong(root beer), or feels warm in my mouth (milk) even though it's not. I tried ice water with lemon juice and a little sugar, but the acid was causing it's own issues. I am now a fan of cold-brewed green tea with mint. I can taste the mint, add a little sugar and it's not bitter, some ice, but not too much. I can actually get through a half gallon in a day of this stuff. Till the next treatment changes everything.
Hooray, I can still taste pizza, chocolate and mint. If I lose those flavors, I'm done for.
Today is my son's 25th birthday and he has been the best kid you could ever ask for. His lady, too, has been a sweetheart through all this. They just show up at the end of the day when I am toast on the couch from school and hang with me. She has cooked dinner a few times for me and just been there. They have went with me for my treatments and when I had to go in with low counts. He IS the man, and this really relieves dad's stress of "leaving me alone." Somehow, this will work out.
So, today I officially finished telling all 23 classes that I see about "why are you wearing that hat?" Kids can so make you laugh and get you through some of the worst SH--- imaginable. "You look like my Uncle Frank, except he's NEVER getting his hair back." Because of my treatment days and other things some kids I hadn't seen since December. The general consensus is that if my hair comes back curly and purple," that would really be something!!"
We're thinking about getting away for a few days over our February Break. Boy, we need this. Hope I'm not so atypical that the T kicks my A-- after the AC wasn't SO bad. Crossing the fingers.

Thanks ladies for the good wishes. I'm feeling a little better this afternoon. Took my DD out to lunch which was a treat. Even though I can't remember when I felt good anymore, I am still reminded that things could be alot worse. I have a wonderful DH, two beautiful supportive DD's and alot of extended family and friends. It makes days like yesterday and today bearable. I hope everyone is on the upswing from treatment. Thanks again for the support.....you all rock!
-
Kelly - I'm glad you're feeling a little better. It's wonderful that you have such a good support network. Wishing for the best for you on those scans.
Rachelslife - Sounds like your kids are really handling it well, and that's so important. Kids can be so much more resilient than we expect. Just keep looking ahead to when you can be the mom you want to be, and let them know that you're looking forward to those better days.
tiedyemom - Happy birthday! I really hope you were able to enjoy it.
Sno - Your students sound great. Purple, curly hair! Good luck planning that vacation. I hope the T takes it easy on you. And have you tried distilled water? A friend of mine who drinks it for health reasons let me try some, and it is absolutely tasteless. Since it doesn't have any minerals in it, maybe you could drink it without any adverse taste. Usually they discourage drinking it because you're not getting minerals that you need, but if you need to stay hydrated, that's more important. Good luck on getting those taste buds back. I'm still swearing by the olive oil....
I had a good support group meeting this evening - Young Survival Coalition. I also spent the whole day wearing one of two hats I picked up yesterday (I got it at a Look Good Feel Better program) and loved it. Trying to get things done at work before Thursday's tx #3.
-
Rachel - good luck on your tx Thursday and by the way, your new avatar looks fabulous!
-
Thanks for the water tip Rachel. Only have used distilled water before for the iron and for the fake fish tank. Worth a try and the fish need more water anyway.
No mouth sores, sorry ladies to you that have them. But the cracks on the corner of my mouth are starting to get my goat.
Good night to all!! Sometime soon we'll sleep through the night.
-
Good luck tomorrow, Rachel! Love the new pic!
-
Start Taxol tomorrow. About one hour before I start 20mg's of steroids...yikes! Expect to be up all night so I've got lots of DVD's ready.
Happy thoughts to all. -
Mardibra - me too! I am nervous as hell!
-
Good Luck to all tomorrow!!
-
Mardibra Gator and Rachel, will be thinking of you tomorrow.
Hoping things go smoothly for you.
Hugs to all you wonderful ladies,
Laura -
Mardibra and Gator - I'll be thinking of you guys!
Mom came down today and made dinner for me. I'll be heading to bed soon. I've got my chemo back ready, but I need to pull a few things together. I brought my computer last time but didn't use it - maybe I'll post something tomorrow. When I do the Taxotere, though, I'm icing my hands, so it makes it tough to read and impossible to type - and when I have the A, it's done by syringe, and my nurse is so great, so I'd feel bad during those 20 minutes to have my nose in a book. But we'll see. The bad news is, I didn't finish my new radio show today - which is supposed to debut Saturday. Hopefully I'll be at least so-so Friday so I can get in and finish things up in the afternoon after sleeping in.
-
To those of you with little ones I can totally relate. I only have 2 but it's still hard.
I wish we were all done, I'm sick of being so tired!
Good luck to you ladies going tomorrow! You will be in my thoughts.
Rachel I decided not to ice during my taxotere and my nails are fine. I do use a nail strengthener (I probably just jinxed myself). I'm not sure if Kelly does. -
Hello all.....heard my name mentioned. By the way, good luck to the ladies visiting the chair today, my thoughts are with you.
Rachel and Markat - I chew on ice during my Taxotere but I don't ice my nails. My MO kind of poo poo'd it and I'm usually already cold enough in the chair. I try to lift my spirits on treatment day by dressing snazzy, being a little bit of a fashionista and to tell you the truth, bagged frozen peas don't go with my boots! LOL Anyway, I haven't noticed any issues with my nails after having 3 TCH. I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays that way.
-
markat.. you made me giggle "i only have two" goodness.. I only have one and it's exhausting!!!! So those of you that have multiple children I can't even imagine the fatigue..you all are amazing moms!!!!
Rachel...Don't overdo it with work..doing this is stressful and exhausting enough..to have that additional stress just stinks..and I'm sending you positive energy that you can accomplish everything you need to and have a successful show on Saturday..
Kelly...I think that's great you dress snazzy on your treatment day! I of course take the comfortable route and were my sweats and sweatshirt and a hat..no wig "in the chair". But, that being said where I am getting my treatment...I am the definately the baby the day I am there. Everyone else is 65+...my tx is on Monday and of course many of the younger ladies have there tx on Thursday or Friday..I didn't get a choice, but I'm ok with it! I don't ice either and my nails are definately getting ridges, but they are hanging on.
Hope everyone has a great Thursday!
Heather

I'm not having any nail issues (knock on wood). I'm not icing or anything, but have (asked my MO and she said go ahead, if you feel like it) had two mani pedi's so far during my treatment. I was sure to explain to the manicurist about the chemo, and they knew the whole "no cutting, everything very sterile" routine. Also, had them do a "newer" technique on my fingernails called shellaque...it's basically 7 coats of polish, over my own nails, leaving them "hard as nails".,
-
Markat and Heather - I have 2 kids myself, although my oldest DD is 24 and no longer at home and my youngest DD is 18 and away at college. However, I get to do it all over again! I just got married again in May 2011 to my DH who is the best thing since dark chocolate. He has 2 kids, a son who is 12 and a sweetheart and a DD who is 16 and the spawn of the devil at times! I thought I was done with all this crap but apparently not. DH is a good father and very involved. They are at our house 2 days a week and every other weekend. It seems like every night there is some drama concerning his DD. She is making alot of bad decisions and is involved with an older boy. My DH and her fight constantly and it really stresses me out! Sometimes I just want to grab her and say "excuse me but can you do this shit some other time....I am trying to deal with CANCER here!". God give me strength. Last night was particulary bad and I think I was actually having palpitations over it. I raised my girls by myself and did a pretty damn good job if I must say so.....this is very overwhelming to me when I have enough to deal with.
As usual, thanks for letting me vent and rant. Sometimes just doing that makes me feel a little better.

Chemo with children? Don't know how you do it!
Sitting in the "chair" now getting my first Taxol tx. Steroids kept m up last night but the Benedryl they ar giving me now is making me sleepy. Time for a nap.
Gator - good luck today ! -
Kelly..hang in there..oh the drama with 16 year old girls..and it always around those darn boys! God Bless you for raising two wonderful women by yourself!!! I so admire single moms..My best friend is with three children and all three are absolutely incredible (2 girls and one boy)..Kudos to you!
mardibra..Good Luck to you and take advantage of that bendryl! Hope your napping!!!
-
Mardibra - I am in the chair as we type. Good luck! I am so jacked up on o. These steroids it is crazy. I am just getting the premeds right now.
-
Thanks for all the advice and positivity.. I really appreciate it. Thank jyou again ladies!
-
Thanks heather....I am so proud of my girls. They are terrific women! It's tough when you are the step parent and really have no say....I do alot of tongue-biting!
-
I was one of those 16 year olds, ugh! My mom laughs and says that's why I have 2 girls
sorry you are going through that Kelly!
Heather mine are both in school. They are 8 &6. The 8 year old is starting to show some symptoms of anxiey and I think it's because of me: ( It's breaking my heart. I thought they were dealing with it so well, but things are different no matter how normal I try to make things.
Good luck today to those of you in the chair. I hope you have little se's. I try to go on Tuesday's so my worst days are while the kids are in school. Getting up to take them on those days are rough but I manage. -
Chemo with children is hard (mine are 7,9 and 16), getting them ready and to school, homework, basketball, feeding them, they still need to eat, even if you don't..., but, for me, it's also made it easier. They're great for taking your mind off of everything BC and for just cuddling up and relaxing. I'm more sad on Monday morning when they go to school. That's new for me, previously, I was like "thank god they have school tomorrow", now I miss them more during the day, especially with having worked much more from home now than going into my office, where I swear someone has the swine flu every time I go in.
Hope everyone in the chair today feels great tonight and gets a good night sleep. Thinking about you all. Joyce -
Can I ask if anyone has experienced eye fatigue as an SE? My eyes are so tired by the end of the day it is painful.....thinking that I may try some reading glasses and see if it helps.
-
Vaniex- yes, I definitely have more blurry vision. Not enough to complain to my MO about, I even forgot to mention it to her. But remember reading on BCO about vision problems with chemo. Ive read of some women with a lot of "dry eye" problems and some with "watery eyes".
-
Well today went pretty well. The Benedryl kicked my butt...made me very sleepy but anxious at the same time. Sort of like taking several shots of NyQuil. I feel much better than I did with AC. No stomach queasiness at all. No joint pain (at least not yet). MO told me only 20% get joint pain that can't be handled with OTC aspirin. I'm hoping I'm in the 80%!
It was a longer process too. They gave me IV Prilosec, steroids, and saline first then the Taxol which took 3 hours. Boring!
So for those of you facing Taxol soon, so far so good. Much easier than AC.
Gator - how was your tx?
Happy thoughts to all. -
Mardibra, so glad it went well for you today. I hope you continue to feel well.
Benedryl makes my heart racy normally, along with steroids I can only imagine.
Do you have to continue to take steroids?
Sorry for all the questions!
Laura -
Yes, have to continue to take the massive dose of steroids. But, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Couldn't sleep much but I can handle that. The taxol was scheduled to start at 9:30 so I had to take 20mgs at 9:30 the night before and had to set my alarm for 3:30 AM to take another 20mgs (didn't need the alarm!). The nervous anticipation was worse than the actual effect. I have heard others say that the steroids were awful for them so thir MO allowed then to slowly reduce the dose.
I've never taken Benedryl before so I didn't know what to expect. But, historically I don't do well ith thoe drugs that are supposed to make you sleepy. They have the opposite effect on me. I get real jittery.
Don't be sorry for asking questions. Ask away! -
Mardibra - glad things went well today and hope it continues.
Vanlex - My vision is worse since I started chemo and my eye doctor said that is normal.
-
Checking in. I tried in 'the chair' too, but when I get the forum on my computer, it only shows me the original post, no replies.
I'm tired. It was a long day, and I barely slept last night, and my mom chit-chatted most of the 1 hour 15 minute drive in. Bloodwork at 9:10, MO at 9:45 and chemo starting around 10:45. The tx was fine, and I felt less draggy from the Benadryl this time. She sped the Taxotere up a bit this time (last time she let it go longer because I told her some of you guys had bad rx's to #2). Finished up around 3. Grabbed mac and cheese for a snack and then we came back. Or rather, stopped at the radio station. I felt okay and just wanted to give a little moral support - it was a pledge drive day - and find a program that went AWOL yesterday. Once home, we ate dinner, and I decided my body was saying 'go to bed,' so here I am. Sleep is iminent.
I understand about not pushing it at work (thanks for the good energy, Heatherb8!). Since I've done fairly well, I keep having to remind my coworkers that things can turn around at any time, so they can't assume I'll be able to keep up this same level. Hoping for the best.
I'm hoping to do a manicure next weekend. I heard the nails often don't go until toward the end, but I'm hoping to preserve them as best as possible. I only chew the ice during the A, ice the fingers and toes for the T.
Gator and Mardibra - wishing you a good night's sleep and an SE-free weekend.
