Mary ... I'll be with you today ... holding your hand and hoping for benign results on the mammogram! Mine is in two weeks and I start to get anxious a couple of days ahead of time.
Blue .. hoping you're getting some relief from the nausea.
Fruit cake is not in my vocabulary.
I don't like the circus, but I do like the peanuts.
It's so darn quiet with my Winston gone .. guess we'll get used to it though. Time to take Maggie and Tank for a run in the fields.

My Mom also made the dark fruit cake. I hated the nuts too. I swore that I would never allow fruit cake in my home. However, an elderly neighbour dropped some off on the first Christmas after my daughter died. It was actually very good!! Ever since, I have bought a little one at the supermarket each year. Yikes...does that mean I am becoming 'elderly'?

Yeah, Circus Peanuts!!! Also Licorice pipes, buttons on long strips of paper, licorice wheels, red hots, and oh, watermelon slices ( with the little black dots for "seeds" and the coconuty taste, and sugar oh yum) Are peeps the marshmallow little chickens? If so, count me in for peeps too.
I shall bring ALL with me in Mary's pocket. How about birch beer, we'll probably get thirsty after all this yummy penny candy.

Thank you everyone for being there with me.
Not a fan of lima beans, circus peanuts, or peeps, but I do like the fruitcake my dad makes. It has lots of nuts and he uses dried fruit(not candied) and a light cake batter.
Thank you again, and now on to my regularly scheduled holiday season.

I cannot eat circus peanuts anymore. I used to love them, but they're like potato chips (or Cheetos), and I can't stop. Peeps are okay for a joke, kind of like cotton candy. Nobody really eats that stuff, do they? Baby lima beans are barely edible, but once they get big, they're like hardened paste. Come to think of it, they sort of taste like paste.
Some day... some day, I'm going to bake a fruitcake. Mr. otter really likes fruitcake -- even the doorstop-kind. I hunted down some fruitcake recipes last year and found some really tasty-sounding ones. The best contained dried fruit that was re-hydrated, so it was soft. Purists say real fruitcake is not made with candied fruit. There are so many different kinds of dried fruit nowdays... it should be fun. Even more fun is the part about soaking the fruitcake in brandy or rum for awhile -- one recipe said for a week; but another said for 10 weeks!
I always get on this way too late for Christmas, though. (I forget about the brandy/rum part.) I guess I should start it now, so it will be ready when we're feeling that post-holiday letdown. Yum!

P.S.: Blue, I sure hope you get your meds and/or energy tuned ASAP. Nausea is one of those feelings that makes things seem a lot worse than they may really be. I didn't know Requip caused nausea....

Fruitcake really can last a long time. In my family the tradition was that my mother made fruitcakes for many special events. She would decorate three tiered ones for our weddings. The top tier was saved for the christening of the first baby. I can't remember what we did with ours as none of the children were christened (except the one who organized it himself when he was 20 something). The fruitcake would be wrapped in tinfoil,put in the freezer and taken out years later and well before being needed to be soaked (again) in rum or brandy.

otter ... I'm going to have to go searching for that fruitcake recipe. My mother passed away many years ago and her recipes were very short on 'details' ... more like just ingredient lists. But I swear that fruitcake was in the pantry for months ... I remember being sent in to soak it several times. No wonder I like fruitcake

This one looks good:Ingredients6 cups sultana raisins3 cups dried currants1 1/2 cups pitted dates6 cups raisins3 cups candied mixed citrus peel1/2 pound candied cherries2 cups almonds2 cups butter3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour3 teaspoons baking powder1/2 teaspoon baking soda1/2 teaspoon salt2 teaspoons ground allspice4 teaspoons ground cinnamon1 teaspoon ground nutmeg1/2 teaspoon ground cloves1 tablespoon vanilla extract1 tablespoon almond extract2 cups white sugar12 egg yolks1/2 cup molasses12 egg whites1/2 cup grape juice1/2 cup strong brewed coffeeDirectionsWash and dry the raisins and the currants. Wash, dry, pit, and chop the dates. Chop the raisins and the citrus peel. Slice the cherries. Blanch the almonds, and slice them lengthwise. Combine fruits and nuts in large bowl.Grease and line 3 standard Christmas cake pans (these round pans are at least 3 inches deep and come in a set of three sizes- 5, 7, and 9 inch across) with 4 layers of heavy waxed paper, or 3 layers of brown paper. Grease again. Preheat oven to 275 degrees F (135 degrees C).Sift together flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and spices onto a piece of waxed paper. Remove 1 cup of this flour mixture, and combine with fruit and nuts. Mix until fruit is well coated.Cream the butter until fluffy. Add extracts. Gradually add sugar, mixing until creamy. Beat egg yolks until light and lemon-colored, and beat into the butter mixture. Stir in the molasses, and beat together well. Add half of the remaining flour mixture, and blend thoroughly.Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry; fold into batter. Stir in lightly the remaining flour mixture alternately with combined fruit juice and coffee. Add floured fruit and nuts, blending in until fruit is well distributed.Turn batter into prepared cake tins, filling each about 2/3 full and spreading batter evenly. Bake in center of oven. Bake small cake 2 1/2 hours, medium cake 3 1/2 hours, and large cake 4 to 4 1/2 hours. Remove from oven and allow to stand 5 minutes, then turn out on wire rack to cool. I'd substitute the citrus peel (ugh ugh) and the candied cherries with dried fruit such as apricots, and maybe maraschino cherries. But luckily you can make substitutions for most of the fruit/nut ingredients.

Linda, that sounds like the fruitcake I used to make. I used to soak the fruit in rum for a week though. Then put it together. hehehe!

Well...the good luck lasted until about 1 AM this morning, when I ended up in the ER with a bladder infection. UGH. I was going to try and wait until my doctor's office opened this morning, but I just couldn't. It's amazing how quickly bladder infections come on. I was fine until about 8 last night. I now have 1 dose of antibiotics in, and I'm feeling better already.
