Poppy doesn't shed much at all. I've noticed a small amount on our sheets if she sleeps on our bed, but there is certainly not cat hair everywhere in the house.

otter ... very pretty markings on your turtle friend.  I know nothing about turtles ... do they interact with you?

Hello All! I am getting a late start as usual tonight...Here's a picture of my Charlie..he is my sweet boy. I was in such a funk before I got him and he has certainly brought my house to life. My 22 year old cat Chloe passed away as I was going through chemo...it was a horrible miserable time and I never realized how much I talked to my kitty until she was gone. My house was soooooo quiet. Two weeks before I got Charlie, my nephew found a kitty in the middle of the highway in a rainstorm! She is all black but her little paws (white) and her Cindy Crawford mole...white speck..Her name is Sadie and Charlie and Sadie are adorable together despite their size difference.

WR, that's a 4-month-old Eastern box turtle in the pic.  They're common around here (southeastern U.S.). This little one and its sib were accidentally uprooted from their underground nest in mid-March by an enthusiastic gardner (dh). They had hatched already but were staying underground until the weather warmed up a bit.

I took care of them for 4-1/2 months and then released them in a box turtle-friendly place on our property.  They really were a lot of fun, and easy to care for.  They spent much of the time buried in mulch in the terrarium, but would come bursting out and "running" to the end of the tank at feeding time.  Very quiet pets!

Gracie - do NOT get a Westie!  Laughing  Seriously they are too darn smart for their own good but the problem is that they are stubborn as can be so not very obedient at all.  They only obey when they want to.  I have had 8 Westies over the years.

The breed I do recommend is a border terrier - they look like the Benji dog - in fact Benji was a border terrier.  The problem is finding breeders - we ended up going to Idaho and that was after being on a wait list for 9 months.  They are smart - learn fast - and do they ever want to please you but you do have to be careful as dh has too many times put Abbey in the "wait command" and forgot to release her and 2 hours later she is still in the same position.

They love attention and they are known to be great around children and other animals, not just other dogs but also cats.

I call Abbey my Junk Yard Dog because although she is a purebred she looks like a street mutt.

DiDel ... what a cute pair you have!!  Is Charlie an Australian Shepherd?

otter ... there is something to be said for quiet pets.  Who stay in a terrarium.  With 2 dogs and 2 cats I am constantly either stumbling over or around somebody ... or being nagged by them for something :)

Diane .. your Charlie is so cute .. I had an Australian many years ago.  They're a great breed and family dog.

Otter .. I have tons of turtles on my property.  They are everywhere.  Twice now I've sucked them up in my riding mower AND they survived.  I have to pick them up and put them back down in the fields by their buddies.

Yep Rabbit .. tripping over my three dogs!

Hope everyone has a great day,

    Bren

That's her spiffy summer do. Her hair is usually a lot longer. Summertyme, what happened to your Virgil's leg? It was probably mentioned, but I didn't see it.

LOVE your turtle - I once stopped traffic - in BOTH directions on Mass Ave in Washington DC - to "rescue" a box turtle crossing the road.  VERY busy urban area, must have been a "pet" someone was trying to keep, confession:  I drove him/her mile & miles away to a Buddhist Sanctuary with acres of land in Potomac MD.  Hope he/she is still happy there.

How CAN you tell if a box turtle is a him or a her? Smile

We had a border terrier, Janice. We got him through a border terrier rescue organization. He was very sweet, loyal, patient, good with kids. My youngest was born after we got him and he was so tolerant of her pulling up on him as she learned to stand and crawling into his kennel to sit next to him. He sometimes looked at us like, "what the heck is this about" but he never snapped at her or anything. We got a toy poodle puppy when he was about 10 who really made us realize both how easy-going he was and how not smart. You'd be holding up a treat saying "sit" to the border terrier and by the time he had figured it out and started to sit the poodle would have come running from elsewhere in the house, jump over the border terrier into a sitting position and be waiting for the treat!

On the pet turtle front, when I was 4 I got a tortise for my birthday (back before we worried about reptiles carrying disease). We kept it in a pen in the back yard and fed it lettuce leaves. One day he got out and wandered somewhere into the shrubs, never to be seen again. The runaway tortise. . . maybe I should write a children's book!

Rabbit .. that Chihuahua is so cute.  My Maggie has turned Tank into a herding dog too.  It's funny to watch a big lab try to herd the other dogs and me too.

RevKat .. I had two box turtles years ago in a fenced enclosure too.  Eventually, they both dug out from the bottom and escaped.  We never could find them.  They liked tomatoes and strawberries too.  I have a place near my field where I set out strawberries and corn, etc., for the turtles and rabbits.

    hugs to all,

    Bren

I had a Woolworth's turtle when I was a little girl. His name was Butch and he lived for 8 years. Lived in a plastic bowl with an island and a palm tree. My DM thought he'd be a good substitute for a dog. NOT! But I loved him, anyway.

Edited to add: I never got salmonella from him - isn't that why they were outlawed?

revkat ... LOL at the 'sit' story.  We have that going on now.  New dog Jake (husky mix) either doesn't see the need to sit for a treat or doesn't really understand what we are asking.  While we are getting him to comply Daisy will sit and even lay down repeatedly.  I keep waiting for her to just push Jake down to speed up the process.

A roll of toilet paper is probably cheaper than a dog toy!

Alpal, I remember those bowls with the palm tree. We had lots of turtles when we were young. I agree never got salmonella either. It's a shame they were a good pet for a kid to young for a dog, or for that matter a hamster.

We have also always had a no rodent policy. Now if the mice in the basement would just adhere to it.

Hey, dinner is leftover sauteed kale (from yesterday) and free range chicken. DH's band is playing at Jiimy B's beach bar on Saturday afternoon/evening. The town is having fireworks that night so that should be fun.

Yum - apple rhubarb crisp sounds delicious. Butter, sugar, flour on top? Oats? With vanilla ice cream?
