Hi everyone - Kate saw me whining about my weight gain after starting tamoxifen on another thread and how discouraged I am... I go about exercising and eating right and see zero results, so then I get lazy again.  I joined weight watchers online today so that might help.  DD is going on there to see how she can make dinners for us, as her husband and my husband could both lose some weight too.  We walked the track tonight and I'm hot flashing away! :-)  I feel like a physical mess.  I hope I can keep it up this time.

Welcome Theresa!  Glad you're joining us!

I walked an hour this morning -- before it hit 108 here.  Summer has arrived!

Thank you for your welcome!  We've had some really nice weather (for a change), so we've walked the track the last two nights.  But it was my grandson's last day of school, so we had a pizza party for dinner ... I'll have a better diet tomorrow.

    Theresa,

This is a marathon.  We have to let ourselves have those pizza parties.  If you can add a salad in with the pizza that's great but, we have to let ourselves have our pizza parties.  Eating healthy and exercise are supposed to feel good.  The whole idea is to find ways of introducing these changes and finding out how good they feel.  To get to that point where you don't want to go back to the old ways because clean eating and healthy moving feel good, make us feel better.  But, if you make it too strict and not fun you just relapse and binge.  It doesn't work.  So, don't feel bad about the pizza party.  Enjoy a fun celebrations for your grandson.  Those moments are what we go through cancer treatment for.  Enjoy it.  Just figure out how to get a little exercise in your day tomorrow, but, don't feel bad about today, treasure it and look forward to some fun exercise tomorrow.

I feel like I have lost 2 months. I have been walking twice a day with my dog but that is all I've done. I walked on the beach one evening. I get the feeling that some of my arm muscle was cut when they were taking out the melenoma. All of my blood work came back good. Didn't realize that mela attacks the kidneys, lypmph nodes, and lungs. Thus the reason for the extra blood work and the chest x rays. Then the heat arrived and the humidity. No rain in a month and drought conditions. It is hot here too Bev. Harley are you getting the heat too?

Welcome Theresa and all of the other newbies. Where in VA are you from? Glad to read that everyone seems to be getting over the surgeries. Just another bump in the road for all of us. Let's all have a great summer and keep moving. I'm on the way out to get a watermelon.

Joy, I have some watermelon and cantelope cut up for later myself.  Can you get some PT to see if it will help your arm?  Did they need to do a sentinel node?

I am starting chemo in July; would like to start exercing and I am trying to see how I can push myself to start and be discplined about it. I have not been very good at this:-( I have 2 small kids under 5yrs and I work FT 5 days a week, so by the time i get home from my daytime FT job, I have to change and start my "Mommy" duties:-) dinners, playtime, bath time, bed time etc so its so hard to take my butt to the gym:-) the gym at our place closes at 8pm (and that is the time i finish everything) nevertheless, I know I really really need to exercise now more than ever!! Soo after i pick my kids from school today I will go and register at my local YMCA (atleast they have babysitting there) and start working out ASAP.

Good for you Snoopy, that is wonderful.  I excercised every day through chemo.  Some days that was a good work out, some days it meant 5-10 slow minutes on a treadmill and that was all that I could do.  To me it was a feeling of control, stress relief, and something that always makes me feel better.  Hopefully it will do the same for you.

Welcome, Snoopy!  It sounds like you have a good plan, in spite of your busy routine.  Hopefully, that will work out well for you. When I read your post, I wondered if you could possibly also add a 30 min. walk during your lunch hour?  Kari often posts about doing that, and I know other women who walk during their lunch break because it's the only time they can fit it in. Just a thought ~   Deanna

Hi everyone - the pizza party was wonderful and yes, we walked the track afterwards.  We walked again tonight even though I didn't feel like it.  I'm glad I did, except I'm hot flashing.  It always makes me hot flash!  It seems to take forever for my body to cool down.

Joy - I live in the Shenandoah Valley - Berryville - maybe you've scene it on the new Wendy's commercial. :-)  My husband and I drive 70 miles to work. :-(

Welcome Snoopy! I was assigned PT during chemo, they were wonderful targeting a heart "range" that would energize me and not depete my energy. They also gave me other exercises to do besides walking. I wonder if you can find something similar? There has been lots of reserach to show that exercise during chemo is very beneficial, and my insurance company paid for it.

Well, today I did 40 minutes on elliptical and boy, I did not feel like it! But I did it. Glad, because I have been kind of slack this week!!

Joy, yes, hot here too, and getting hotter by the day. We had a nice day yesterday!

Spring, they did pay for it?  What a smart insurance company.  My trainer has done so much for me to undo chemo damage and reinforce what the PT wants done.  Well, at least up until this last surgery!  I so so wish I'd had him from the beginning.  I can't wait to meet with him Tuesday and get started on getting the core strength back I lost during this last surgery.  It helps I know I can trust him to be careful of healing incisions.  He has made such a difference in my strength and endurance I can't help but wonder how many of us would be helped with a good PT and trainer after treatment. There are so many studies showing how many women never return to full time work or have chronic problems.  I just wonder how much good a proactive program would do.

If anyone else comes by this thread from Southeastern Michigan who ever wants his name, PM me!

Theresa, pizza party and a walk.  Can't think of a better celebration.

It was gentle yoga for me tonight.  Tomorrow I get a few of the restrictions removed so plan on doing some very low resistance careful  training with bands.  Man has that been a good investment.

A very dear SIL is coming to visit in a few days. She is a big walker. So, she's promised to do a lot of walking with me as I try to get back into shape right now.  I'm excited

Thank you for your advise; I registered at the Y yesterday so no more excuses:-) I will also try and do the 30mins walk during my lunch break (thats a great idea). I normally walk alot as I use public trnasportation to come to work and i work in the city (and live in the suburbs) so i normally walk around during my lunch (esp now the weather is nice) I will try and do that more.

    Have a Great weekend all.

    Go snoopy!

I am having my 6 monthly Zometa infusion today (waiting at the cacner center now for insurance approval, ugh!) so no exercise for me today. I don't know if this is superstitious behavious or what, but I feel that if I take it easy on infusion day, that I get less pain from the infustion. I am hoping this is a painless one. I've had 4 and I'm 2 for 2 on the pain! Hopeing to tip the scales today!

I hope this Zometa infusion is pain free, Spring.  Is there nothing you can take for it if it does happen?

Good for you, Snoopy, for registering!  That's a huge step!

I walked about an hour yesterday and today.  It's warmed up here considerably, and I need more discipline to get out by 7:30.  By 9:30, the sun's just beating down too much to move very fast. In fact, today was more like hurried little dashes from shady spot to shady spot.  And when it's this hot, my truncal LE flares, which it has this week.  I definitely need to get out earlier now.

I've also been doing the self-healing energy exercises on Andrew Weil & Ann Marie Chiasson's Self-Healing Energy Medicine CD.  A couple of them, Toe Tapping and Shaking the Bones, are extremely invigorating.  The latter reminds me of African Tribal dance.  I sure sleep well afterwards!    Deanna

Hi there.  It has been a while since I have posted on this thread.  I have to say, I need the motivation to figure out how/why I can't lose any weight?  I am going on two years on tamoxifen and I am still gaining weight.  I exercise 5 days a week and have added walking to the bit.  I am very frustrated!  I even signed up on a web site called fat secret that outlines and adds up all the intake-fat/carb/protein and you can chart your weight.  Sigh---Well, it feels good to vent.

Theresa I just changed jobs so I can be at work in 3 miniutes, life is good.

I worked out 5 straight days this week, even with my DD graduation.  I also started cleaning my grout yesterday.  That should count for a lot.  You do not even realize how disgusting it is until part of it is clean.  That will continue till next week.

As I post it is 93 degrees, I have no idea how hot it got today, I was in the house on my knees cleaning.

Happy Friday everyone! Hey Hey Hey it is a beautiful day (that song is on the radio right now)

No pain from the Zometa infustion today!  Yay! I love it when this happens....

Deanna, the walking sounds great, and how interesting about the self healing CD!!  I see a self healing music CD on amazon, but it does not mention energy exercises. Can you share what you are using?

JRGolomb - It sounds like you are exercising a lot, so that's good. Have you tried Weight Watchers? I and several others in my family have used this either now or in the past and had great success. I think for most of us, we are just eating the wrong things and more than we should. Lots of eye opening when you first start. I personally have cut out meat for the most part and all dairy, and focus on veggies and fruits (though I do occasionally have fish and eggs). This is not WW, this is just me! I do exercise probably more than the average. I have actually lost weight on Tamoxifen - I am at least 10 pounds lighter than when I was dx'd almost 3 years ago, so it is possible!!! Don't give up!!!

Hey Snoopy - you are outside Winchester. My ex step daughter and kids use to live in Berryville and now live in Royce. I am from Pulaski Co (the far western part of VA) I have lived in NC for 7 years now.

Another hot one today. It is sad when the dog lies down under a tree in the middle of the walk. I think that is a subtle hint!! lol Mid 90's for the next week and no rain in sight. Everyone have  great weekend. Me - I'm working.

Harley - I am now the coordinator for the Reach for Recovery in Carteret Co. Got handed to me because the coordinator got sick so I am filling in for her till she can get back to it.

    Yeah Snoopy

Jess so good to see you back

Not as hot here as some of you are dealing with, but it sure is humid.  I think a little lifting and a long walk today.  Little lifting, feels good, I'm allowed to do some light weights today

It hit 100 degrees today in Raleigh! We went for an hour long early bike ride -- it was "only" 81 when we left and 83 when we got back. Very doable, compared to later in the day!! So glad we made the effort to get out early. The park and greenway trails were PACKED with people doing the same thing!

Joy, I think we're hotter in "land locked' Raleigh since you have the ocean breezes!!  Hey, nice job picking up Reach for Recovery! Soon we'll be at the beach for the pink ribbon yoga retreat!  It's already hot enough to be August!!!

Glad you are feeling up to the weights, KMMD!

Hi Ladies--I am back. Finally, I was able to do my bike ride yesterday and I intend to do it today, too. It has been a bit difficult for me to do my excersizes, as I am working 9 hours daily + commuting one hour each way = totaling 11 hours that I am away from home. I have another ten days to go at my current temping job then I will start working at another one that is nearby my home. I hope to do more excersizing then. If I can afford it I might join the YMCA that would be near my new job and would love to go there daily. I will keep you all posted. Thank you for your support. Katia

Joy - I live in Berryville!  Boyce is about 5 miles down the road, Winchester about 12.

I haven't done a lot of exercising these last two days, but I'm determined to get out today, even though it's humid and gloomy.  We bought a goodly amount of fruits and veggies.

Springtime - it's encouraging to hear someone has lost weight on tamoxifen.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Another morning bike ride! My back tire needs air, it will be easier after it if filled correctly! But glad we did it. 90's here today. Glad to have the exercise out of the way in the more sane morning temps!!  (as only low 80's then!)

Thanks for the tips, everyone.  I will look into Weight Watchers.  This week I exercised six days, but varied it a bit- some step aerobics, walking and TKD......I also  upped the amount of water; I don't think I drink enough.  I also think I am going to join a club- maybe some of the work outs will be helpful , especially to get rid of the jiggly jelly roll around my waist!  :)

Jess, I read recently (don't know how true it is) that every time you get dehydrated you decrease your metabolism during that time by around 3%.  I think those little changes add up.  Sure has kept me drinking my water.

Jess, do you know how to figure out how much water you need?  You take your body weight and divide it in half.  Then that's the number of ounces you need.  So someone who weighs 120, for example, would need 60 oz. of water -- which is probably far more than most people (unless they're super health conscious) ever drink on a daily basis.

Spring, that CD I mentioned is Self-Healing With Energy Medicine by Andrew Weil, MD and Ann Marie Chasson, MD.  Someone gave it to me as I was recovering, and I just love the information and ideas on it, including some of the self-healing exercises, which are designed to rid our bodies of the negative energy from past experiences.  I have another CDs from this series that didn't impress me as much, but this one's excellent (IMO).

I walked for just half an hour this a.m., and will try to do it again at dusk.  Over the weekend, I had the worst truncal LE flare I've ever had, probably from walking in the heat later in the day. My chest hurt so bad, I literally couldn't get a deep breath without a lot of pain on my mx side -- which, of course, made my mind go crazy with all sorts of "what if's."   It's better today, but no more hour+ walks in the hot sun for me.    Deanna
