Didn't want to play favorites, BarbA, so I'm popping in here to say hello, too.

If by "spirited and lively" you mean "drunk and hyper," then count me in!

Evening buds. My week of hell in our North Jersey office is over! I was supposed to be there for a few hours on Monday. They just moved and I was to be the good will ambassador making sure all computer equipment related things ran smoothly. Turns out I went up on Sunday to help with other things, and stayed till late in the day Thursday solving/troubleshooting some problems! Had to go to local Marshall's and buy more clothes!  Upside is that home feels so good after a trip like that :)  And now I leave tomorrow for a 4 day conference in DC with two other coworkers! Truly will be a lot of classroom learning, but we'll manage to have fun at night! The literature says DC but it's really just outside in Maryland on the Potamac at a gorgeous hotel. We've gone 9 out of the last 11 yrs...always a different locale...so we know a lot of the "regulars" too out of the 2,500 or so that attend. So I won't have access to a computer where I can check this site .. bummer :(

So....good to "see" you all - loved all the pics.  Barb, if you want me to try and find the pictures from our trans-Atlantic sailing expedition, just let me know :)  I don't think the gypsies stole that bag!

Marybe, YUM!!! Joyce the cruise line actually took the Starlight Princess over to the east coast last year and they were trying to get permits to do West Palm. They couldn't and after a year in Daytona, they came back to St Pete, since they can keep busy here all year and Daytona wasn't that busy.

Barb - I am looking for my pics from the scuba diving adventure, but I think the gypsies took that stack all I find are grandchildren at the pool!

Ok, I have a question for any of you who garden....something is going on with my hollyhocks....they have beautiful blooms, but the leaves have some little dots all over them that look like yellow warts...I had Tim get some bug stuff for me, Sevin, but now I am thinking maybe it is some sort of fungus.  I will take a pic of the leaves and post it later....right now I am going back out to weed some more....may just get a nice farmer's tan this way.

    Marybe....  Rust....fungicide every 2 weeks.

I have been plagued with it on and off over the years. I end up pulling out plants, and growing fresh each spring, to flower following year...then ditching those after 1 season. It's a devil to shift.

I THINK its some sort of spores in the soil that are splashed up on to the plant when it rains.....but that's just from my shaky memory !!

I loved your post about the hypnotist....so what are you going to do now...try the gas as Barb58 suggested?

I really don't think it is rust....I have a ground cover that starts out great every year and it always gets rust....I have treated it many times and it still gets rust.  Now this stuff is like an elevated bump and yellow....it seems to start at the bottom of the hollyhock and moves up because the lower leaves are the worst and some of them dead and dried up already....but maybe you are right.  I figured you would know since hollyhocks always seem like they should be in an English garden to me....along with foxglove and delphiniums.....both of which I have planted many times and they just disappear.  I bought a new bleeding heart this year and so so hope it makes it because the ones I had before vanished also.  About the only things I have that grow and multiply ever are my hollyhocks (even if they are diseased), ferns, false turtle head, hosta, columbine, lilies and something I think called brunella.  I used to have a ton of cone flowers and black eyed susans and daisies, but this year they are rather sparse. Then I have a bunch of other things I am sorry I ever planted because they are invasive and took over and killed everything else....that is the stuff I am having this guy we hired dig out.  Oh and my hydrangea & clematis all came back....and of course Iris and tulips and daffodils, but they are over.   I love working in the yard and am so glad I am feeling like doing it this year.

I'm thinking we should rent a private rail car and travel around the continent.

We just got back from our Mt. Shasta/Black Butte Dinner Train tour, and we ended up in one of the cars that is privately owned, and in this case, leased to the organization that put on the tour.  The owner & some friends had taken the car up from SoCal, and they had room for eight of us for dinner out of the two-three hundred aboard the train.  We had thought we were getting the Dome car, and got "bumped" -- It was fortuitous because unfortunately it was pretty overcast and Shasta wasn't as prominent as it "should" have been.  Our 14 companions were very interesting and more than made up for the weather and this was definitely better than the dome car.  The ride, and the formal dinner were just great, and the sky cleared enough to get a good sunset.  Some sensor on the tracks went out, and we got "delayed" at the wye turnaround for an hour, which was just fine with me.   The owner was an interesting man...self-made.

I definitely want a private rail car -- a very civilized way to travel indeed.  Until I get one (when donkeys fly & winning lottery tickets rain from the sky), we should just lease one for the summer...

LC and Lisa - a private rail car for the summer sound luxurious.  We could travel on any of the rail lines just by hooking up to one of their trains.  When could we leave?????

{{{{3jays}}}} so good to hear you're not in the hospital, got some new clothes (what a discount!), and got to go out for dinner with your son and gkids!

I like the idea of a private railway car too, LC, and I really think we could "make do" in one like AmyJo posted!

joycek, Savannah is one of my most favorite "old" cities.  DH and I've been there a lot and always have a good time--the tours and the riverfront shops are so much fun, not to mention the antique stores.

Beautiful day here today--temp hit 90, but so much less humid, for some reason.  Very nice.

I'm glad you're feeling well enough to do some gardening, Marybe.  I don't know anything about whtever disease has taken over your hollyhocks; haven't had any experience with them myself.

Right now, I'm obsessed (DH says I am, at least) with some running bamboo our neighbor has planted which has encroached on our land.  The reading I've done about it is very discouraging, saying how hard it is to control, much less kill.  These neighbors are decent people (been there about 20 years) but have nothing to do with others in the neighborhood.  The wife calls us occasionally offering to share produce from their garden.  DH (Mr. Don;t Make Waves) doesn't want me to say anything to them, but DH is 65 now and I don't know how much longer we can combat the bamboo.  We know they planted it for privacy, but it cerrtainly causes us much more work to keep it at bay.

Oh well, end of rant.  Maybe I really am obsessed about it!

Kathy, MAKE WAVES if you need to.  Running Bamboo is almost impossible to maintain and contain.  If it is encroaching on your land, let them know.  If they are descent people they will understand your concerns and maybe you all can come up with an option that would give them their privacy without creating a headache for you or other neighbors.  If you have a neighborhood association and the neighbors are not cooperative, go to the association board and get them involved.  We have been though a similar situation and the assoc. board got things resolved and we managed to remain on speaking terms with the neighbors.  Sometimes it is okay to be obessed.

Thanks for the support, AmyJo!  Unfortunately we don't have a neighborhood association to consult, never have had one.  The neighborhood does have restrictions placed by the developer (such as outbuildings must "match" the houses, no above-ground pools, that type of thing, but nothing like an invasive plant is mentioned.  I read recently on one of the "eradicating bamboo" sites that it had even been known to travel under a swimming pool and emerge on the other side!  I absolutely must talk to these neighbors.

Might be easier to deal with if they'd planted kudzu!  I actually saw a news story tonight about a couple who rented goats (yes, goats) to eat kudzu growing in their back yard.  Alas, one cannot rent pandas to eat the bamboo!

Oh, Kathy, I had the same issue and we solved it by buying glavanized steel plates 3 feet wide by 6 feet long. We pounded them into the ground and that kept the runners from encroaching. The neighbors really should do this for you since it is a royal PITA.

AJ, I would love to do a private rail car trip. DH and I rode the Verde Canyon railroad for a 4 hour trip and it was a blast! Not quite as posh as your pix but we did do first class and it was lovely.

They have a caboose for private parties. Nice.

Kathy, I use glyphosphate weed killer on anything like this.

I use it on the farm as well. It's pretty good stuff, but DON'T put it on anything else but the plant you intend to eradicate, its potent stuff ! It SHOULD go down and along the underground roots, killing all in its path. I have to admit I have never tried it on bamboo, but its very good on anything that has underground roots. Best used when plants are about 6"- 9"so I would chop the bamboo that's in your garden down to this level, give it a week or so to recover..then.. BANG ...kill it.

Off to have another try at the dentists in half an hour, just getting up my courage...can't have a stiff drink, I'm driving ! My Dr has given me some vallium for the extractions I have to have, plus 3 for a 'dummy run' to see how they work on me !! I feel like running away !!
