Hi VR, you son is moving to a wonderful city full of neat places to live..it all depends on how much he is willing to pay...he might want to interact with his workplace people to get a better handle on things before he commits to a place..my sons when they were his age wanted to live in Pacific Beach.

Thanks for the info. He is using a company sponsored broker and will use company housing for the first few weeks. We have to hit the ground running with finding a place. What is the farthest away that he should look? Right now he pays $1800 for his mortgage and maintenance. So, we thought it should cost a little less in San Diego.

He could check out our website for traffic at different times of the day here. That should give you a little clue about commuting...

I agree with Lis about Pacific Beach, but it is a truly awful commute from from there to Qualcomm. The traffic getting off I5 at Garnet at rush hour is Worse than *awful*. There is also Hillcrest - though it's predominately known as the gay area of town, there is a substantial straight population there too.



If he is just looking to rent for awhile till he can get a better feel for the city, he might consider the UTC area. This is a good time to look because UCSD graduation is next weekend, so there'll be a number of vacancies. From there on 805 it's only one exit to Qualcomm.

And he better start getting used to traffic reports....not that we don't have traffic on the legendary Long Island Expressway....

UTC is the area around UCSD, extended east to 805.



For night life, the closest he'll come to NYC is downtown, Little Italy (just north of downtown) or Hillcrest. The thing to remember is that even though San Diego is called a city, it's a toy city. Closer in feel to manhasset than manhattan.



The one benefit to the UCSD/UTC area is that there are stores he could walk to. Just no night life. This is the area of town I live in. Qualcomm often puts people up at the residence inn in La Jolla- if this is where you'll be, send me a PM - I live next door. I'd offer to help more, but I need to prepare for surgery on Friday.

You sisters are wonderful and helpful. Guitargirl.. I wish you well with your surgery. We arrive on the 7 th and he starts work on the 13th. I will head back to NY on the 11 th and return hopefully in early July once he settles in. What about the gaslamp area?



He is a former ocean lifeguard so I think San Diego will be a good fit for his lifestyle. I like the idea of north of highway 8 being less traffic. I think driving is going to take getting used to because he used to fall out of bed and be a dozen blocks from work. Often ran home during the day for lunch or even worked from home.

The gaslamp area is a part of downtown - literally 5th ave and the cross streets. Google maps shows a lot of the neighborhoods downtown.
