Hi VR, you son is moving to a wonderful city full of neat places to live..it all depends on how much he is willing to pay...he might want to interact with his workplace people to get a better handle on things before he commits to a place..my sons when they were his age wanted to live in Pacific Beach.

Well, have him stay north of hiway 8.  Furniture is good and cheap at IKEA, if he is handy with things to put together.  Rents are pretty high, but he should have a good pay check and if he is at the main Qualcomm compound, he will definitely want to be well north of 8, less traffic getting to work.

Hopefully he will love it here.

    Gentle hugs, Shirlann

Thanks for the info. He is using a company sponsored broker and will use company housing for the first few weeks. We have to hit the ground running with finding a place. What is the farthest away that he should look? Right now he pays $1800 for his mortgage and maintenance. So, we thought it should cost a little less in San Diego.

He could check out our website for traffic at different times of the day here. That should give you a little clue about commuting...

right now it is all green, but check out the commuting times PDT here on the weekdays

I agree with Lis about Pacific Beach, but it is a truly awful commute from from there to Qualcomm. The traffic getting off I5 at Garnet at rush hour is Worse than *awful*. There is also Hillcrest - though it's predominately known as the gay area of town, there is a substantial straight population there too.

If he is just looking to rent for awhile till he can get a better feel for the city, he might consider the UTC area. This is a good time to look because UCSD graduation is next weekend, so there'll be a number of vacancies. From there on 805 it's only one exit to Qualcomm.

What is UTC? He definitely will rent for a year before deciding to buy. He also owns an apartment in Manhattan that he wants to hold on to. Today it was rented after being on the market for one week. He wants to be close to work, so this UTC sounds good. I don't want to sound stupid, but since he is used to walking all around NY, is there any place that he could live where he could enjoy the night life and walk home and still be a short drive to work?

And he better start getting used to traffic reports....not that we don't have traffic on the legendary Long Island Expressway....

Hi, Oh yes, walking is in.  But generally people drive to the bay.  Mission Bay has lots of lovely views and nice landscaping and many paths.  I think San Diego is a lovely city, dry, not much rain, but weather is usually good.  Lots of hikes in our mountains.  Only about an hour away, "Mountains" is stretching it! ha ha, but still, we are known for our outdoor activities.  Surfing, Boogie Boarding, bay scull activities, any water sports and hiking spots.  We live in Mission Valley, sorta in the middle.  Living in the beach communities is quite expensive, but only a short hop by car.  We avoid traffic by being aware of the time of day.  If you want, I am retired and have lived here for 60 years and I would be glad to ferry you around when you get here.  I will Private Message my phone number.  Best, Shirl

UTC is the area around UCSD, extended east to 805.

For night life, the closest he'll come to NYC is downtown, Little Italy (just north of downtown) or Hillcrest. The thing to remember is that even though San Diego is called a city, it's a toy city. Closer in feel to manhasset than manhattan.

The one benefit to the UCSD/UTC area is that there are stores he could walk to. Just no night life. This is the area of town I live in. Qualcomm often puts people up at the residence inn in La Jolla- if this is where you'll be, send me a PM - I live next door. I'd offer to help more, but I need to prepare for surgery on Friday.

You sisters are wonderful and helpful. Guitargirl.. I wish you well with your surgery. We arrive on the 7 th and he starts work on the 13th. I will head back to NY on the 11 th and return hopefully in early July once he settles in. What about the gaslamp area?

He is a former ocean lifeguard so I think San Diego will be a good fit for his lifestyle. I like the idea of north of highway 8 being less traffic. I think driving is going to take getting used to because he used to fall out of bed and be a dozen blocks from work. Often ran home during the day for lunch or even worked from home.

    Thanks for the help!

The gaslamp area is a part of downtown - literally 5th ave and the cross streets. Google maps shows a lot of the neighborhoods downtown.

If I'm not up and walking by the 7th, I'm going back to the hospital for a refund. Luckily, not bc this time around. You can always get me on email at chaya at san dot rr dot com.

    Hi VR

I've not had a chance to chime in yet.  Qualcomm has buildings spread out in the Sorrento Valley area - do you know where he will be working?

I was just asking my 31 year old daughter and her friend where they would suggest he live.  They think Pacific Beach would be a good place.  It's near the ocean, has some night life that he might enjoy.  It would be a good place to live if he wants to be around some night life but the drive to Sorrento Valley during rush hour could be any where from 25 to 40 minutes - it all depends.

Another area to live, if he wants to be close to work, is Mira Mesa.  There's no night life but lots of restaurants and shopping areas and he would be close to work (5-10 minutes). He might even be able to find something within walking distance.

Good luck and let us know if we can do anything for you while you are here.

Just because the 18th is the only weekend day left that I can meet doesn't mean you can't pick another day.  Saturday the 18th is the only day I have available as I'm going out of town the following weekend - and the 19th is Father's Day.

On the other hand, if only two or three of us can get together, that's okay too - can't say it hasn't happened before.
