But E, I totally get why waivers are *supposed* to be granted but what about the waivers for these unions? More than 3 million people! And the stupid law itself outlaws mini-meds, thus waivers were born. Sheesh, what are the companies and unions going to do next year? Get another 1 year waiver? And so it goes.
Among the unions receiving waviers are locals for the Teamsters, Communications Workers of America and Service Employees International Union.
-
I'm guessing that the waiver process will probably continue during the transition period. The health insurance pools and the subsidies don't take effect until 2014. It makes sense to me to allow people to keep what they have ... even if it's not very good it's better than nothing ... until then. I would be more upset if they were being all rigid and hard nosed about enforcing it all before alternatives are in place.
-
What I gather from the article is that waivers are meant for certain companies to be able to keep the health care program they have rather than submit to the insurance companies opportunistic wild increases in costs. And this is temporary, a transition, until the effects of the new health care bill come into place in a few years. Thus, people will be able to continue their current health care (albeit possibly imperfect) without crazy increases until something better is in place. What's the problem with that?!
-
Barbara, lassie11 is right. My husband's union has a waver. If they didn't get the waver they couldn't have continued their Health Reimbursement Arrangement account, or whatever they call it. It's similar to one of the health savings accounts, but the money goes in differently. Instead of my husband contributing the money, it's one of his fringes.
-
Lassie, the waivers are for ONE YEAR. If the stupid bill had not made the mini-meds illegal, everyone would have their same health care they have WITH the waivers and waivers would be unnecessary. So now they will have to apply for waivers every year and waste the goverenment's time to process them and review them. So, we waste $$ and lots of time filing and processing waivers all because 'we have to pass the bill to find out what is in it.' THAT is what my objection is.

Arnold....what a chump ( and that's being polite) A love child....jeesh. A post on my friends FB said
" the saddest part of all this is that the Republicans are reproducing" ...lol Ok, I'll duck out now but for any repubs here....it was a joke...just a joke! -
Pickle, I can take a joke, even if I am an independent (but conservative).
My thoughts about Arnold are unprintable. Perhaps that is because I knew Maria back in the '70's when I lived in DC and she was in college. I feel for her and her family.
-
Barbara ... it takes time to transition to the new healthcare program... set up the plans, etc. They could not realistically make it all effective immediately.
It seems to be the prohibition on lifetime limits that are causing the most waivers. Maybe it would have been smarter to delay that until 2014 also? But maybe some people are already benefiting from the changes that did away with them ... like cancer patients?
My problem with the so called mini-meds is that they are basically a farce. People think they have health insurance but if something major happens they find out that what they have is pretty much worthless.
Granting the waivers seems to me to be an honest attempt to smooth the transition for everybody.*
*And to deny the insurance companies an excuse to double or triple their rates and blame it on the removal of lifetime limits. But I'm biased ... I think insurance companies in general are blood-sucking vampires every chance/excuse they get
-
But I'm biased ... I think insurance companies in general are blood-sucking vampires every chance/excuse they get.
Rabbit -- that's not bias! When are (more) folks going to start to understand that health insurance companies ONLY care about increasing their profits and providing greater dividends to their shareholders? They are no different from companies that provide household, fire, etc. in that, if they can devise more and better ways of denying claims, you can be sure that they will.
-
I agree the insurance companies are blood sucking vampires. They keep having record breaking profits while I struggle to buy food (after I pay for my health insurance).

An interesting article in the Guardian.

A ROFLMAO link. This from the usually staid CDC.
-
BarbaraA, no way! Did somebody hack the CDC website and put those on there?
-
No this was really serious. So funny.
-
They're getting ready for tomorrow. Good thing Ray forced me to watch all those zombie movies. Remember.......shoot their heads off! What a hoot!
-
Blue by tomorrow do you mean the Rapture? Boy, how stupid are those people gonna feel when they wake up on Sunday morning.
-

I am so confused. These Bible literalists didn't read the part of the Bible that says noone knows the day or hour not even Jesus? But apparently this "pastor" who started this whole thing has special knowledge Jesus didn't. Oh my poor head is going to explode.
-
Yes Barbara. From what I've read. all the good folks go to heaven but the rest of us remain here as zombies until October some time. Can't wait!
-
Careful Rosemary....someone might think you're a zombie with an exploding head.
-
Blue
Oops. Did I blow my cover?
-
I didn't want to say anything and cause an uproar on these boards, but I've always suspected that both Rosemary and Blue were some sort of zombies. I feel I have a 6th sense about this kind of thing.
-
Now you know for sure! hehehehe!
-
Ah the internet. I could be a zombie or a boy in his mom's basement or a woman dealing with breast cancer in her own strange way and nobody will ever know. I would type more but it's hard. One of my arms just fell off (Kidding- or am I?)
-
I'm typing with my feet. You figure it out.
-
Aaahh just back from eating brains.
-
Such agile zombies!
-
Barbara .. that CDC link was so funny!
Zombies ... what next? The rapture? I'm not ready for either. Guess I'll be left behind until October with Blue!

Bren
