Demonstrations which lead to bad behavior are not per se "group think". Although group think can lead to demonstrations not all demonstrations are the result of "group think".  The mere agreement as to a goal is not group think.  The demonstrations in Egypt had the common goal of getting rid of Mubarak.  The demonstrators may have had many different reasons for their participation and the elections should show that these demonstrators have differing ideas on what should be done next.

However, when people believe something just because if fits previously held opinions and without analysis to the accuracy of the new information that can be a component to "group think".  The term usually includes the initiator of the information being a powerful or influential person or organization whose followers fail or refuse to analyze the information given for accuracy or truthfulness.  Media stories that show only one side of a situation feed "group think".  Viral e-mails are infamous sources of material for "group think" especially around election time.

The following is from the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy: http://www.iep.utm.edu/fallacy/#Group%20Think

    Group Think

A reasoner commits the group think fallacy if he or she substitutes pride of membership in the group for reasons to support the group's policy. If that's what our group thinks, then that's good enough for me. It's what I think, too. "Blind" patriotism is a rather nasty version of the fallacy.

They organized a non-violent revolution and now they're organizing a clean-up operation. I think these people are capable of running a country. See pictures of the clean up at Tarir Square here:

Kadeeb - they're not gone but they'll be a little less nasty for a few days - whenever Melissa is around they cool it a bit then start up later in the week at night crescendoing on Friday night and Saturday - it's easy to just not get involved with their nastiness - like bad children they eventually go away because they're bored.

PIP - Happy Valentine's Day to you too - put your feet up - do you have any chocolate?

Kk - you light up this forum - remember that in this dark hour of your mind. Soetero - namecalling and pure jiongoism. The cancer card -- sorry, I only take cash......Excuse the disjointed rant - my phone connection times out in a second....

Madalyn, welcome back! Lewing's banning - an outrage. I think we will all have to come up with avatars for troll Fridays. Groupthink - more dangerous than cancer. See you all later. Damned phone doesn't even let me start a new line!

OT - Oh, pic from this afternoon watching DH's band at the beach bar. It was maybe 68 but the temp was dropping fast when I left at 5. A much needed temporary escape. They sounded great and had about 200 people even as cold as it was. However, some were from northern climes where 68 and an offshore breeze over cold (48) water is fine. I had silk long johns, long sleeved T-shirt, sweatshirt and fleece jacket on. Still froze by behind off. Home now in comfy 74 degrees.

Barbara, I hope you aren't expecting the Canadian ladies here to feel sorry for you having to wear warm clothes.  It looks like a beautiful day there to me.  No one is wearing parkas or scarves and one guy is in short sleeves.  Looks tropical from here!

Edited to add:  Sandy, I ALWAYS have chocolate handy.  Dark chocolate is like medicine for we bc girls!

PIP, I know. I just have blood that has thinned out. Not to mention, I have lost 20 lbs since BC and am at 104 now. Trying to eat eat eat but not yet. I thought the cruise would do it but man, I gained 2 lbs. Not enough!

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY to this whole thread. May friendship triumph over jingoism, jealousy and fear. Barbara, I lived in south and central Florida and never got used to the heat. I gained weight thanks to hormone therapy, and it is coming off very slowly. Lots and lots of exercise.

Barbara:  What kind of cruise is that where you don't gain weight.  Was it a Weight Watchers Cruise?   Seriously, most cruises pride themselves on making us fat with all the tons of food we are expected to gourge on all day and night!  Only 2 lbs!  Most women would envy you but I hope it wasn't due to your not feeling well enough to eat.   I hope you had a great cruise anyway!

Athena, When I quit smoking the last time (after emergency surgery for a perforated ulcer due to me stupidly self-medicating with Advil because of bad migraines they didn't medicate me for after a bazillion tests) I gained a TON of weight and was up to 140 after about a year. So stupid me started smoking and got back down to my weight I had weighed since my 30's...125,

But in reality, I think this is really a better weight for me. No stomach pooch, no floppy arm things. But I really do think 108 is better, since that is what I was since diagnosis. Confused about what the 103 thing is. But I am eating chicken florentine and asparagus when DH gets home (30 min.). And I plan to CHOW down!

Barbara, I "hate" you!  :-)  I haven't weighed 108 since maybe 6th grade.....maybe 8th grade and I haven't weighed 120 since my 20s.  In fact I'd be happy if I could get back to 140---its my goal weight.  blech!  The last two weeks I have worked out, walked at a fast pace and consumed giant spinach salads and tiny dinners.  And the only impact: weight up because of the muscle factor.  On thursday, we go on holiday....I'm not even going to try to watch what I eat.  How can one watch what they eat when touring bakeries and chocolate shops?

Happy V day! to all the Americans----is it V-day in  Canada?

Sorry folks. Us Floridians find this weather to be painful. I am now at home enjoying 72 degrees of heat. At night we have a great down comforter and turn the heat down to 63. Fine with me, except when I have to go to the bathroom. I do that real quick.

I have gained 20 lbs since diagnosis, and that is with keeping track of what I eat and exercising. I was too thin and stressed when I was diagnosed, so I don't really want to go back to my pre-bc weight, but I certainly would like to take 10 lbs off.  However, I do have cleavage now, which I never had before, so there may be some advantage to weight gain.

I am celebrating for a friend tonight.  When I was going through treatment, I went to a Blues Festival that is held in Henderson, KY every year, and saw Chubby Carrier and his Bayou Swamp Band perform their wonderful Zydeco music for the first time.  I was sick and exhausted when I arrived, but was revitalized and felt so alive when the evening was done.  Over the years we have followed his career, and gone to any venue we could.  He is one of my facebook buddies.  This afternoon, he won a Grammy, first time nominated, in the Cajun/Zydeco category. Cooked a big batch of gumbo, and poured some hurricanes while we watched.  I am just so tickled for this small town bayou guy from Louisiana and the great guys in the band.  However, I will say, if I could have reached through the computer and throttled Kathy Griffin, I would have done so.  The non-mainstream contenders get so little recognition, her nasty foul sense of humor demeaned their brief moment in time even further.  Lifting a glass to Joseph Carrier, Earl, Randy and the rest of the guys. Hold on to your dreams, peeps!

Fat and sassy is much better than the alternative!

    Peace, baby!

OMG!  I had never even heard of the other site before today.  They are speculating that White Rabbit and I are the deleters on this site.  Too funny.  It is like Jr. High behavior.

kadeeb:  They are just having fun at our expense and we need to ignore them and just learn to be more thick skinned.  I consider myself to have skin of steel after everything I have survived in life but somehow when I read adults mocking other adults and myself just because they "can", it does have a way of bothering me even with my steel skin.  However, I intend on ignoring them and hoping they will find another playground to play in and ignore us too.

BTW,  what is MT?  Is it some kind of medication?  I never heard of it.  Thanks!

    Medigal,

Yes,YramAL is right.  SeaFoob told me she had it when she predicted the deleters were about to strike on Friday night. I wanted to talk to her about the stock market but her gift seems to be going in and out at the moment.
