I am just not understanding how those who declare that the constitution is so sacred can pick out something "they" don't like and want to change it. If changes are unthinkable for guns or any limits on free (ie:hate )speech, why should change be appropriate for babies born in your country?
-
Pat Paulson had a very good point.
-
Medigal, my point and RiverRat's (I believe) is that there was no concept of "legal" and "illegal" for immigrants from Northern Europe to the U.S. until 1921. My ancestors were not more "illegal" than "legal" -- the concept was not applied back then.
-
Erica: How can you equate the 19th Amendment (our right to vote) with illegal immigration? I take it you just are being humorous ( I hope!). There are foreigners who are taking advantage of our 14th Amendment and that is why many want it repealed. I don't see any problem with our 19th Amendment at this time.
-
ANNNYC - YES it was applied "back then" . Read up on history of immigration. There were rules and regulations in place
-
That's so cool annnette.
My mom is in the early stages of Alzheimers. Funny but not funny at the same time. She calls me everyday to ask me something that she should know.
Medigal, I understand the right way of doing things, but these people are there already, through no fault of their own.
-
We don't need any new laws or to repeal anything-just need to enforce the existing ones. My parents had to jump through a million and one hoops to immigrate from Canada back in the late 40's-Dad had to have a job and a sponsor willing and able to pay for them for up to two years if need be...enforcement...other countries do it and do it well. We need to as well. Our entire country is made of imigrants - although I do agree with the Pat Paulsen quote resoundingly. If you want your heart broken go to Oklahoma and talk to some of the first citizens... ack...not a proud time in our history...to the victor goes the spoils I know...but i actually threw up and my big strong husband was a wreck over all we learned and saw...we gave them smallpox and liquor in turn we got the most amazingly beautiful country on the planet...we gotta share fairly...or none of us would be here folks...just enforce the laws
-
I guess if charity begins at home then the question is- who is my neighbor? We each have to answer that for ourselves.

Annette .. you and your mom look so cute together!

Devious little creatures aren't they!

I think we have missed the point by focusing on the words "legal" and "illegal". It's a very simple concept to my thinking. They are all considered immigrants but some follow the rules and become citizens the right way and others find ways to become citizens the illegal way. I think that is how we got focused on the two terms. Some people pay for their groceries with money etc. and then we have certain people who rob stores. The robbers are doing it illegally and can end up in jail. The first people get their groceries legally by paying for them. They don't have to go to jail (we hope!). I am a strict believer in following rules so I will not condone people who break them for any reason. Just who I am because I was raised by parents who also believed in following the rules of their country.

Erica31, do you have any links for me?
I'm from Wisconsin, and what the Wisconsin State Historical Society indicates is that while Wisconsin was a territory, the railroads and other businesses were beating the bushes in Europe (Germany in particular) to tantalize immigrants with promises of land. And the more populous the territory, the sooner Statehood would be achieved...
I realize circumstances are different now, but I stand by my statement that German immigrants to Wisconsin in the 1800s were not considered illegal when they just showed up... I would be glad to be directed to documents supporting something different...

No reporting, that was the only rule when this thread was started. Well I guess people who want to mess with the Constitution when it inconveniences them do not understand what rules are for.
-
But it's one of us doing the reporting......dontcha know? What a coincidence.
-
Why read this forum or participate in it if you're just going to violate our one rule. It makes no sense. Don't read here if it is upsetting to you.

On another thread on this site a woman reported a post and then posted that she had done so and why. That showed integrity.
-
I CRS. What was so bad about that post?
-
I've been deleted?!?!?! Aw shucks, you shouldn't have. . . .I feel so accepted, so so, so LIBERAL
Well my family includes a number of people who just sailed over the Great Lakes without the least bit of paperwork. And out of those immigrants came firemen, teachers, lake captains, farmers, seamstresses, soliders, a few lawyers and who knows what else. I am thinking that the people with houses on fire, whose children were taught, with legal issues resolved are probably happy we were all here.

Welcome to the club!

The song and video was very nice. However, I read some comments. They said that John Lennon wrote the song because he was not welcomed in our country.
It is time to stop illegals. Did you hear about the Muslim man that was hiding in a BMW trunk? He was thrown out of Canada. His lawyer has given all kinds of excuses.
Do you not think Jihadist can cross our porous borders?
Do you believe it's just fine for mothers to come here just to have their babies so the babies can become citizens? And then the family comes along.
Do you think that people who become citizens in the U.S. should have to learn English. I believe I read in order to become a Candian citizen one has to learn the language. Is that true or did I dream it?
I don't think anyone is talking about kicking out the kids who were born here and are now legal citizens. I think they want to prevent this from happening over and over.
Our states our bankrupt. Our country is going bankrupt. I heard this morning that more handouts to states may be coming. How long can we do this?

Does anyone know who is deleting the posts again? . I think we need to bring whoever this is to the forefront. If not we are just covering up for the person and helping them to keep destroying our posts. If necessary we should at least PM Melissa and tell her who we think it is. I think she wants this stopped as much as we do. If we are waiting for "integrity" to bring this woman to the front, we will be waiting a long time. I would like to know if "deleted by community" means the person is revealed to Melissa. Does any one know? What is it with some people that they can't handle a difference of opinions without wanting to delete posts?? That really confounds me!

Shirley,
Does the USA have an official language?
What language did the native americans speak?
Anyway - if you read the guidelines to become an American citizen, you do need to be proficient in English.
-
Medigal
I know counting on the person(s) deleting posts is a long shot. For now until all the changes Melissa talked about making are made the integrity of the reporter is what we've got.
-
Medigal, my understanding is that the deleters' member names are revealed to Melissa and/or the other Techs.
The problem for Melissa would be if the deleters are using member names to delete that they never use to post...

Interesting info about the history of immigration to the U.S. here:
http://members.tripod.com/l_alfano/immig.htm
"...Before 1855, there was no immigrant processing center. The shipping company presented a passenger list to the Collector of Customs, and the immigrants made whatever Customs declaration was necessary and went on their way."
That's the point I was trying to make -- if you were white, you were "all right" -- you booked your passage and you got off the boat and you were an immigrant.

Ok, folks, I will probably get banned from BCO for what I am about to say, so if that happens, hugs to you all. When you finish reading this, if you wonder what it was I did to expect banning, I wonder too. I think my sin is to just say what everybody is thinking:
As things stand, the only posts that seem to get deleted --90 percent of the time, not 100 percent--- are posts expressing liberal views.
That is one fact about this "conundrum"
And here is a bit of speculation: I believe the deleters are NOT those of us who participate in other topics in this thread such as travel and children and Blue's lovely daughter and Barbara's brother. I believe some of those who delete may be amongst those who participate in political discussions. Some are lurkers and some are posters.
I believe Melissa has not been fair in allowing this lopsided castigation to continue. I did not read the post that was deleted a few pages ago but it brings up this problem.
Melissa, if you are reading this, could you please let us know if there are any posts on this thread that have been deleted without violating the rules? Since we have been shut down several times, I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that you follow us closely?
I have reported two posts in this thread. One was a personal attack and the other was jingoistic (against Canadians) and I did not find it humorous. I believe they fall under the rules of deletable. I suppose the BCO rules have changed.
