That and the fact they don't even bother to deny it.
-
There are ways to tell even if a person has different IP addresses and emails. One site I frequent has a "language style" program that they run posts through when there is somebody who seems suspicious.
-
There are over 87,000 members on this board. Don't you think that a couple of them might just have an overlapping "language style" even if they are different people? There could also be multiple people with the same IP address if they share access to a computer either in a home or at a public library.
I think it is much worse to make accusations that are unable to be substantiated against posters here than to worry about someone having more than one ID.
Who really cares if someone has more than one account as long as that other account is not being used to hurt others? Some of the chatters have posted that they keep an additional account to deal with occasional technical difficulties. Why would that bother you?
Any account that is being used to hurt women on this board should be banned. If they have a second account, and can learn their lesson, and play by the rules of the board, who really cares?
Don't you believe in rehabilitation?
-
Well, I care. There has to be some reason that these people "hide" behind other user names. Otherwise, they would be up front about it. I know I would.
-
Yea .. I believe in rehabilitation 5% of the time. The other 95% not so much .. 'just sayin'
If someone is truly rehabilitated .. why hide behind numerous user names.
-
There is also the issue of people who have forgotten their user name/password and start a new account because they just can't remember the original. That can happen if they don't sign on for awhile and then are diagnosed with a recurrence, or as a result of chemo, or as a symptom of disease progression. Are you saying that those women don't deserve support?
-
Of course not. I know of many gals who went off line and forgot their passwords and created a new account. I also know of two gals who were permanently banned and were let back on this site. Some people have changed their user name but not their account. All perfectly reasonable explanations.
But what we're talking about here are members who regularly use multiple accounts .. why would they do that?
-
Just hit the button that says "Forgot password? Press here to retrieve it". A lot easier to do than creating a whole new persona. Even then, would it be so difficult to add a note to your page saying "I used to be..."
Sorry. I just don't buy that there are any good reasons to have more than one account other than to post something you don't want to own up to.
-
Pat
All women deserve support. It is a shame that some women have used multiple accounts here to drive other women away from bco. The women who felt they have to leave deserve our support. It is a shame that we even have to have this discussion. If multiple accounts were only used when someone forgot their password, we would not be talking about this.
I know many people who write all their user names and passwords down and keep them in a safe place.
-
People using multiple identities should be banned unless the use of a second identity is approved by a moderator. This is how it is on every board I have been a member of. If there is a suspicion that someone is using multiple ID, the administrator of the board can determine multiple ID from the IP address.
-
I had mine own website/message board for quite awhile. Notself .. you are right, the admin can easily check to see if someone is using more than one ID by their IP address. It does get tricky though if some has a satellite provider as the IP's roam.
Bren
-
Also .. some people log in with multiple ID's when one of their ID's has been permanently banned. It's a way of getting back onto this site and still be able to post, even though they have been permanently banned from BCO.

Yes, my original user name was Prihode and I changed it to Kindergarten because Prihode is my real last name and I was advised to change it because of security purposes. Everything else in my account has remained the same. Just curious, is that a violation of anything?? Thanks so much and have a blessed day!!!!! Kathy
-
Kathy .. there aren't any violations about changing your ID name, especially where security is concerned. It's a good thing to change it from your real last name. I know many gals who changed their ID name because they were being stalked by coworkers, ex-husbands, etc.
Bren
EDITED: I don't post my real name either .. that way no one searching for me on the internet can trace me to this site.
-
If someone is acting inappropriately on this board, it really doesn't matter how many accounts they create. Each one on which inappropriate activity occurs should be dealt with by the moderator. Someone having multiple accounts may make more work for the moderator, but banning multiple accounts will explode her workload tracking down all the multiple account users who are out there now. Other than the report this post function that the tech team is apparently working on, how does that effect you? Let's give the tech team time to do their jobs, and see if that ends any issues you are having.
There are many good reasons to change user name, and even account information, especially since people outside of these boards can find us using google and a few key facts, or a familiar nickname. People who are trying to avoid that shouldn't post who they "used" to be.
As far as I can tell, banning multiple accounts would just make more work for the moderator, and she seems to be busy enough doing a job that is akin to herding cats.
-
Wow! I didn't know this thread was still active until I signed on and saw this in the "active topic." I thought Melissa had things under control or working on it. Are posts still getting deleted?
-
At the risk of being accused of "stirring the pot", I think it is disingenuous for certain posters to pretend they have no idea of what's being discussed.
Edited to add that this is all I'll have to say about this.
-
Yes, thanks, BinVA, that is exactly why I changed my user name, my son googled my name and saw posts from BCO. Boy was I dumb to do that, oh well, a lesson learned. Thanks again, and oops I mentioned my name here, too. Thanks, PatMom, hopefully no repercussions from this either. Have a great day, Kathy
-
I don't have to have multiple IDs because I say what I mean and mean what I say. If it gets me banned for being honest on this thread then I don't belong here in the first place. Personally, IMO, people unless they use another ID to return after having problems with certain posters, would only be using multiple IDs to be deceitful. Now that is not a fact or one of the Ten Commandments. It is only "my" honest opinion of why someone who is a poster in good standing on this thread, would have to use multiple IDs. Basically, I think our usual group of posters who have been on here for some time, do not have to confuse us with multiple IDs.
-
Thanks Kathy .. hope you're having a good day too!
Medigal .. I agree with you.
Alpal .. I know exactly what you're talking about.

Bren, imho, spending time trying to figure out why some people create multiple user accounts is a frustrating exercise that uses volumes of perfectly good brain cells. It's just not possible to make sense out of behavior that makes no sense.
Years ago I was the mod for a gardening group, and this one bozo was absolutely relentless. Back in those days, aol was a popular provider. Their policy drove me nuts because they used 'proxy servers'. I couldn't ban this one guy without banning all the aol users. Now I'm such techno dinosaur, I don't even know if aol exists anymore. Banning ip addresses can help some, but ultimately, people who want to reinvent themselves have ample resources to do so. It's a moderating nightmare. It puts people on edge every time a new user comes on board. Is this really sally from georgia or is it the latest reincarnation of margaret from idaho who just got banned?
Having multiple accounts is just a tool used for nefarious purposes. It would be nice to have a reasonable explanation as to why people behave in that way, but how can anything truly explain behavior that doesn't make sense. We'd have to be part of the group that behaves that way in order to understand! I dunno about y'all, but I'd rather stay on my side of the crevasse and spend as few brain cells as possible pondering the question. I used to be married to someone who lived on the other side of the crevasse. I used to bend myself into a pretzel trying to make that marriage work until I suddenly noticed I was drained in every sense of the word. Guess I should've gotten out sooner. One year after my divorce was final, I was dx'd with bc. Toxic people can be contagious! It's not possible to prevent these people from entering our lives, but if you can find a way to disengage, it will prevent some of their toxicity from lingering within you. hth
-
Althea .. thanks for the reality check ... it is ridiculous for me to try to make sense out of nonsense.
Time for me to move on.
Bren

I think the intentions of multiple accounts, and defences of them, are clear. If you have to hide behind multiple names to voice your opinion, maybe they aren't worth sharing.
-
I was a moderator on a very large board. We banned the user of multiple ID's when someone suspected such use and reported it, or when we ran across it and the user did not have a good reason for two ID's. If the user did, such as forgetting to ask permission and just wanting extra security, we let it go and deleted the old ID.
We did not search for multiple ID's. Most mischief makers were reported and banning those was not that time consuming.
-
...stands up and faces the group....
"Hello, my name is Susan and I'm a Fellow Deletee"
Yeah... I created another account (obviously not trying to hide it
... because I've been put on probation and banned from posting over 5posts/24hrs because of a ridiculous thread that (at least 5) people went overboard and reported half the posts! So I'm on day 2 of banishment for having TWO of my posts unjustly deleted. I've pm'd the moderators twice. Others have gotten unbanished.
Sigh. I'm frustrated.
-
Speaking up for a Stage IV sister who is about to undergo WBR and just had a post deleted that did NOT violate the rules.
Melissa, you know the thread. Could you please investigate? Thank you. This person needs unrestricted access to BCO now more than ever and she did nothing to deserve what happened. How unkind are those deleters.
....oh, and there is a Muslim sister whose posts also got deleted. Suspicion is that the Muslim bit matters. Same thread, same thing.
Thanks!
......ath....I'm disappearing into deleted territory...
-
What the hell .. Athena .. we had TWO stage IV posters deleted tonight .. and a new gal.
Melissa .. please check out all the deletions tonight .. none of them were warranted.
Thanks,
Bren -
And Bren, let's get together with anybody else and bump this thread until the situation is taken care of and all of these non-rulebreaking posts are reinstated. I am shaking with anger right now.
-
Has anyone PMed the moderators? I think that kind of abuse of the report button should result in banning.....There is no reason for that Stage IV sister to have her post removed, None
-
The only reason for any of those posts to have been removed was because the cowards who deleted them didn't agree with them. Instead of deleting posts from women who have different viewpoints than they do, they would be much better off examining their own souls for the hatred that lurks there.
