Can we call this Spudgate? Just because it sounds funny?
-
All I can say to her WTF is OMG...lol
-
Aw.... wow. I am so confused.
I hardly ever want to say anything critical about politicians, or ex-politicians (like former governors), or politician-wannabe's, on this thread, because half of its participants would disagree and jump on my post. But, ... was Ms. Palin on drugs during that interview?
So, the Soviet Union won the space race. Was that their space crew we've been watching in that video of the moon landing, all these years? And their rovermobiles that have been crawling all over the surface of Mars? Oh, and those cool shots of ice volcanoes and planet bands and stuff -- those were really from USSR spacecraft? Who knew (except Ms. Palin of course)? But, alas, they spent so much money competing with us to get into space that their country went bankrupt, and they had to declare, ... what? They declared democracy? I am so confused.
And now, instead of a lofty goal like putting manned spacecraft on other planets (or whatever; yeah, I know about the wind turbines and the green shingles), we're going to ... open donut shops on every street corner? SPUDNUTS? (I thought she was confusing Sputnik with Spudnut -- or is that part of the joke I'm not getting?) What the heck is a Spudnut? A donut made with potato flour? (Am I getting close?)
I have had days like that -- days when someone asked me a simple question, and all the thoughts in my brain suddenly disassembled, leaving a hodgepodge of loose words and phrases. Seeing the person looking at me, waiting for an answer, I would toss out whatever floated to the top and was within reach.
BAD idea. Especially on national TV, during an interview with Greta. (It's bad enough if it happens when you thought the mic was off.)
It's reality TV.

Like I said Otter .. I just couldn't resist. I do think Spudnuts is a play on words though .. she's just lucky they really exist! At first I thought she pronounced Sputnik wrong ... then she just kept talking .... and unfortunately, it all fell into place.

While I pray she will never be President, I do see a future for her as a stand-up comic!
She may have enraged her Krispy Kreme filled TP base with her strong endorsement of another donut.

I went back and did some studyin', and I have lernt that...
1) Obama said the Soviets won the race into space, which of course is true; but most of us who were alive at that time (1957) would argue that the "space race" was a whole different thing. IMHO the Soviets did not win the "space race," unless you count the fact that we are de-funding and discontinuing the shuttle program and will now be dependent on Russian spacecraft to carry our astronauts into space and to maintain the "international" space station.
Ms. Palin, of course, wasn't born until Feb. 1964; so she had to learn all that stuff by studying it in school rather than experiencing it real-time (and that makes a difference). She entered kindergarten (presumably) when I began my senior year in high school. That means she not only didn't benefit from the huge emphasis on science and math education that occurred in the U.S. in the 1960's, but she apparently didn't benefit all that much from, well, ... no, that would be mean so I won't say it.
2) Spudnuts are, indeed, made from potato flour. Duh. But, they way predated Sputnik, so the name is not a play-on-words (unless the Soviets were the ones making the joke). The Spudnut flour formula was developed in the late 1930's/early 1940's, and the first Spudnut coffee shop opened in 1948 (http://thespudnutshop.com/htms/history.htm). Now, they're "World Famous." Really? May we have a show of hands?
3) Ms. Palin's remarks, and her reference to Spudnut coffee shop franchises as a noble goal, remind me of what one of our own, dear, governors of Alabama once said. (There are so many Alabama governors who've said so many quotable things, yes?)
This was "Fob" (Forrest Hood) James, Jr., who occupied our governor's mansion from 1979 - 1983 as a Democrat, and from 1995 - 1999 as a Republican. (Yes, you read that correctly. Please hold your questions until after the lecture.) During the summer of 1997, when we were struggling through yet another year of tight funding, Gov. James looked to the state agencies and ordered them to streamline their operations. Wanting a model to which he could refer as an example of a well-run, highly efficient yet effective organization, Fob James chose ... (wait for it): Waffle House restaurants (http://www.nytimes.com/1997/08/29/us/alabama-gop-governor-sees-a-different-new-south.html).
It seems Gov. James liked to eat at Waffle House restaurants. They're a mainly Southern chain of one-room, open-all-night diners with a 1-page, plastic-laminated menu that offers breakfast 24 hours a day. Many of us here in Alabama were embarrassed that our governer did not have a more sophisticated plan for improving state government. We were further embarrassed when, as usual, our governor's words were repeated in news reports and on evening talk shows across the country.
Gov. James was not re-elected for a 2nd (or would that be 3rd?) term. His son did run in the Republican primary election this past summer; but he came in third behind Bradley Byrne and the eventual winner, Robert Bentley.
Unless anyone has questions, class is dismissed.

Clinton, SC has two Waffle Houses at the same interstate exit. Sort of like dueling Waffle Houses. I guess they both must do really well as they've been operating for years. Smothered and covered, anyone?
-
Heh heh. Actually, I hated Waffle House restaurants, until many of them had to ban smoking because of city ordinances.
My dh liked their pecan waffles so much that he urged me to learn how to make them when we were courting. He ended up proposing marriage to me when my waffles turned out even tastier than those at Waffle House.
It wasn't all that difficult to make waffles better than theirs, BTW. (Oh, shoot. There I go, talking about recipes and food again!)
otter
[Edited to add: The word "shoot" in my statement above was a euphemism. My use of that word was not intended in any way to be a direct or indirect reference to violent activity.)
-
Smoking or no smoking, those places are pretty disgusting. Lots of grease! But, as you can tell, I know a lot more about Waffle Houses than I do about Spudnuts!
-
Oh gosh .. ya'll are making me hungry again. I want a big waffle smothered in butter and maple syrup for lunch. And maybe some blueberry pancakes from the House of Pancakes!
Bren
-
I want the recipe for pecan waffles!
-
I like the fact that caribou barbie says that Obama wants to "aspire" Americans with his reference to Sputnik!! LOL..
-
She may want to refudiate that!
-
I can't help it .. I love that word 'refudiate.' It has such a nice ring to it! I think it aspires to be a real word.

Pretty is as pretty does! I've said that before on this thread, haven't I? Maybe it should be changed to cute is as cute does.
-
Mmmm...Waffle House.
We lived there during my JMU days...
-
Oh, you ladies are having SO much fun with Palin and Bachman....here's some more comedy for you

lol bren!!

OMG, you guys are killing me! I'm reading this thread out loud to DH & we're laughing our butts off! This thread hasn't been this entertaining in ages.
-
-
I aspire to refudiate that she can see Russia from her house, and that she reads "all of 'em"
-
worldwatcher...Touche!
I admit that I have spent the morning LMAO at Palin clips. But you have to admit that there are probably 100 Palin bloopers for each Obama 1. And she really does seem to believe what she says as opposed to having slipped up in the moment.
-
otter, dear, I bow down to you and your wonderful history lesson! I left Alabama in 1993 (was there for about 5 years, bless my heart!) and was always amazed at the politicians. And that awful Richard Shelby who I actually voted for??? Don't get me started. I worked in public health--what an eye-opener.
Forget Waffle House--give me a Denny's Grand Slam breakfast! Love the pancakes better than waffles any day. And a much nicer, longer plastic menu!

I tried earlier to come on this thread, during the AZ shooting....which a bunch of posts blamed on "mean-spirited right wing rhetoric".....now that it's apparent that the shooter was instead, a "left-wing lunatic" and didn't even hear or read any "right wing" sites, I didn't see any walk-back from the Palin-blaming...even when I provided proof that the map with the targets on it was put out earlier by the Democrat Leadership Council....
I spend a lot of time on political forums, and frankly the mean-spirited rhetoric that I have seen on the BCO forum has for the most part kept me from even posting on the cancer-related threads.
I lived on an egg ranch where the chickens had "free range", meaning no cages....when one of them would have some kind of small injury, the other hens would gang up and pick her to death. But these chickens were just dumb animals acting out of instinct...no reasoning power in their make-up. The Palin /Bachman attackers in the US don't have that excuse.
The kind of treatment that is given by the media and the liberals to any FEMALE republican politician makes me physically ill.....Geraldine Ferraro, in her run for vice-president, was treated with respect even by those who disagreed with her politics and especially by the women in this country.
PIP.....

OK Bluedahlia,
That's the last straw. I've managed to remain in lurk mode, but your comment sucked me in.
