Yes Bren.  It comes in every flavour imaginable.  Ray and I often go to "La Paloma" on those hot summer days.  Usually go for the lemon and pistacchio.

Being Italian , I grew up eating it.  However, when we were in Italy on a trip, I found that ours back home was even better.  I don't know if you know what canolas are but they are my favorite dessert! But the Italians in Italy CAN't make them correctly.  Theirs were disgusting and nothing like the ones we got back home that I grew up on.  It seems the Sicilians who immigrated to the US brought the better recipes with them.  The younger generation in Italy and Sicily have not kept it up, imo.  Gelato is not creamy the way our ice cream is.  It is an entirely different taste.  I love it because it is a lighter dessert than ice cream and more fruity.

Bren:  If DH really likes those pigs feet you really need to thrill him by fixing up a pot of stewed pig tails.  I would just wear my best sexy nightgown to the table and unfold "this" delight on him.  You may be in for an unexpected reaction from DH as you sit across from him chewing on those scrumptious little tails as you roll your lovely eyes at him.Wink  Have fun but be prepared!

Medigal, what part of Sicily do you come from.  I was born in Reggio, right across the Straight of Sicily.  I had many aunts and cousins in Messina.

I love the squirrels in my yard.  They scamper back and forth between an oak loaded with acorns and a hickory loaded with nuts.  Squirrels crack open the hickory nuts, take on bite of the nut meat, and then throw the nut on the ground.  The small birds love this because the squirrels make it possible for the birds to get high fat nutrition in the winter.  I don't mind it a bit when the squirrels eat bird seed because they share nuts with the birds.

I hope Melissa will select some additional moderators and change the report post function so it is no longer automatic.  Volunteer moderators can review the reported posts and delete those that don't conform to the rules.  Melissa can ban repeat offenders.  This is how it is on almost every forum I am on.  It will take some reconfiguration of the board and it might not be possible.  We can only hope.

Bren:  I am "not" kidding about those piggy tails.  The feet are great for eating but those tails can work wonders if you really know how to eat them the right way.  Hubby will be following you from room to room they are sooooo enticing.Wink

Blue:  I only visited Sicily and Italy a couple of times.  It was padre mio who was born and raised in Palermo and immigrated to the US as a young man.  He always literally cried because he missed his "Bella Palermo" so much but never had the money to return and even visit it.  So a few years back, I took a photo of him and put it in a Kodak can and went to Palermo and buried it under the tree where the ship he used to immigrate to US took off from.  I said a little prayer and told him spiritually, he was now back in his "Bella Palermo" and didn't have to cry for it any more.

It gave me a great feeling of peace to know although his body rested in a plot in the US, his true spirit was now smiling from being back in Palermo.  I know I made him very happy that day.  I could see why he loved it so much.  It is a beautiful place compared to where he ended up in the US,   I never got to see Reggio but it must have been a beautiful place too.  I sure hope you don't spend your days crying for your "Bella Reggio" Blue.

Blue:  You are so fortunate to be able to return to a place you love so much!  I guess no one will have to plant "you" under a tree in a Kodak can!  I'm so glad you are able to return and enjoy it.

I can't see Blue planted in a Kodak can anywhere. I'm sure she'd escape and have fun, go back and nobody would be the wiser.

Gelato's okay. But give me rich, creamy ice cream, preferably home made. We have a couple really great ice cream shops here in Boulder that are locally run with organic products. Sooo good!!!

Ahh, the best US ice cream is Bluebell Homemade Vanilla and the best gelato is layers of strawberry or raspberry and chocolate.  Hmmmm --I never considered gelato could Ever be that good, but it is.

My absolute favourite ice cream flavour is Tiger.  I won't waste caloric intake for any other flavour.  My husband laughed at me for years for eating "kid ice cream", then last year, sick of him mocking me, I made him try it.  Funny how now his ice cream cone now holds Tiger.

Folks, I had a PM from Athena and she is OK. Just had her final recon surgery and is in percocet-land. She has been floating down the DeNile for a while but said to say hello to all.

So glad Athena is ok.  The longer she was silent, the more worried I became.  Sometimes, de Nile is the best place to be, particularly when faced with the reality of this site.  Hugs to her if she is lurking.

My grandson has turned me into a Coldstone addict, fortunately there is not one here in town or I would be 200 lbs.  I do love the Blue Bell, haven't been disappointed in any of the flavors I have tried.  We always have some of the vanilla in as our Jack Russell loves ice cream and we can't give him anything with chocolate.  I don't think I have had gelato since I left Canada, no one local offers it.  When I went to college in Burlington, VT, Ben and Jerry's was in their original location in an old service station on a street corner.  We got to stand there and watch them work their magic on concocting the most wonderful flavors.  Don't think I have ever had better ice cream.

Arizona Gov. Brewer cuts medicaid to 280,000 uninsured.  Thank goodness by law they can't do away with the Breast and Cervical Cancer screening program.  We can thank Bill Clinton for that.

Republicans voted for the bill, Dems did not.

Bren:  Thanks for the link.  So what are they going to do with all the elderly on Medicaid in Nursing homes in Arizona?  Throw them out in the streets!  I guess some mom doesn't get food stamps for food for her children so some 90 year old person can be kept alive when they would prefer to "meet their Maker".    This could start a complete change of how Medicaid is handled in the US.

Oh!  Has anyone seen that the Chinese are now selling their Yens in certain US banks and allowing us to buy them.  They are paying a higher interest rate than we can get for US dollars!  Hmmmmm where is Shirley when you need her?  Maybe out buying up all those Yens to hoard with all the food she is buying.  Whose laughing?  It's just coming even faster than Beck predicted!  Mandarin anyone?   Not the fruit......the language!!

"I guess some mom doesn't get food stamps for food for her children so some 90 year old person can be kept alive when they would prefer to "meet their Maker". "  <sigh>  So, which governmental agency are we nominating to make those choices?

Lindasa:  Thanks for the correction.  It is the Chinese Yuan that they are selling.  I will try to post the link and see if I do it right:

    http://www.depositaccounts.com/blog/2011/01/chinese-bank-accounts-and-other-foreign-currency-accounts.html

It is a site I use a lot to keep up with bank info and the stuff usually is reliable.  Not every bank has the Yuan.  If you read the article, it states which banks do.  I just found it very interesting.

Currently the income tops out at $903 a month for a single person and about $1,200 for two people.  I don't know how much lower they can get in AZ.  Only the homeless will be eligible for medicaid.

Otter:  Someone has to take control of this quickly eroding situation.  I think it is horrible that our nation has eroded so badly financially that it may "have" to come to something like this.  YOU must have no idea what it's like for some of those old people to have to end their lives the way they do in the nursing homes.  It's NOT always because the homes are unfit.  They can only do so much for someone who is physically and mentally deteriorating and they usually don't have the funds to hire enough staff to keep  them as clean as they should be.  Before you smirk at my post, why don't you go visit a few nursing homes and then tell me YOU would want to end up like this in your last days.  Sometimes these "last" days can go on for YEARS and it costs the State a fortune to keep vegetables alive!  You wouldn't do this to a DOG but I guess it's ok to allow someone's beloved MOM to end her days crying to die!

May be it's because I know our life doesn't end with this one that I want these people to be given a chance to get renewed but unfortunately, my opinions on this come off wrong.  I am NOT talking about "death panels".  That is why I think this will never happen in the US.  In the wrong hands, it could become "death panels".  This is a very sad situation for our nation to be in.

The baby boomer generation is a very big group.  This age group will be retiring, enmasse, in the next several years and a little later in Canada (our boom was later).  Health Care and Nursing home costs are going to sky rocket as the boomers continue to age AND live longer.  Double whammy with the boomers.

Then of course, boomers didn't have as many children and had them, often, later in life.

As a result, there will be less workers supporting these expensive, non-productive boomers.

I think there is a strong probability that when the next generation takes over government - they will be inclined to be not generous to the elderly.

Of course it depends on how they were brought up and whether they value their elders.

    http://www.cnn.com/2011/OPINION/01/20/borger.palin.fatigue/index.html?hpt=T2

America is growing tired of Palin.  Her unfavorability rating has jumped 10 points among women.  I wonder why that is.  Perhaps she's overstayed her welcome.  Even Gingrich and Pawlenty are asking her to tone it down.

Washington (CNN) -- OK, you've got Palin fatigue. Not to worry. So does much of the country: The latest CNN poll shows that 56 percent of Americans view her unfavorably.

More damaging, though, is this: Sarah Palin's unfavorable rating among women has gone up 10 points. And 59 percent of those all-important independent voters don't like her -- and that's up a stunning 14 points in just a few months.

You might argue it's because of the debate surrounding the Tucson shootings -- specifically, Palin's tone-deaf response to the unfair charges that she was somehow responsible for a deranged shooter's state of mind. And that could well be part of it. But there's more: She's completely overstayed her welcome.
