Meece this is a great thread, wish I had found it when I was trying to loose weight. I started in Oct at 138lbs and now am at my goal of 120lbs. I exercise like crazy and cut my portions. Eliminated sugar and caffiene from my diet and eat alot more fresh fruits and veges, frozen if I can't get fresh.
For all of you working on it. Trust me that if I can do it anyone can do it. I had not been into exercising for 20 years. Always been an active person but not exercising. Good Luck to you all I know that you will get to your goal. All of my doctors told me exercise and good nutrition was my best bet against not getting bc again so that has been my motivation. Find your motivation and don't loose site of it.

Hi Community Members,
Breastcancer.org is exploring the idea of developing a "tracking" tool to help you organize and monitor your health behaviors.
Our question to you is, what kinds of things would be most helpful for you to track, if any.
Some examples could be: weight, food eaten, glasses of water per day, alcohol consumption, cigarettes smoked, daily exercise . . .
Would it be helpful to track health obstacles? Mood and energy levels? Health goals? Would you want these trackers to be public, or private? Would it help to be able to post your progress on the discussion boards?
Are any of you using another sort of health tracker? If so, let us know what it is, and what you like or dislike about it.
We look forward to hearing your constructive suggestions, and how we could help you.
Many thanks,
The Breastcancer.org Team -
The things I track are weight, water intake, servings of fruit and veggies, exercise. I would like to track calories and measurements as well. I was using DietPro, but it's on the computer that died the other day so I don't have access anymore. Diet Pro tracked calories, fat, carbs, electrolytes and many, many other nutrients. I liked the graph of the weight best, and being able to set personal weight, calories and nutrient goas. I would like to have the option of making the tracking public or private. I would use healthy behavior tracking (getting screenings like colonsocopy, b/p checks, cholesterol checks, etc). Thanks for asking, and I look forward to seeing what you come up with!
-
I don't track anything beyond exercise and water intake. Would like to track meals, etc. but it needs to be easy. While I know that this is about all around good health and behaviors, I also feel like I have given over my whole life to breast cancer so anything else I do needs to be just plain easy. Thank you so much for this website, the information you post, the friends I have made and for even considering putting together a tracker for us.
-
I think NativeMainer pretty much covers anything I would want to track as long as the goal setting for weight allows for weight gain goals as well as weight loss. I've tried several tracking methods in the past but none worked long time. I really think having a system on a site that I visit several times a day--or even once a day--would be wonderful.
Thank you for BCO. This website is more than helpful in so many ways. I believe it is life and sanity saving.
-
I mentioned in an earlier post that I have been using fitday.com. Now that I am coming up on a year of using it, it would be nice to be able to see my weight graph for more than 12 months.
Thanks for asking moderators! This site is my safe haven and home these days.
-
Meece and Mimi, could you please set my starting weight at 187 lbs. I seem to be stuck there this week! Grrr. Here's hoping I don't catch the flu from my family. That would kick-start my diet the hard way!
-
Well tomorrow is weigh-in day! Edited to avoid confusion: Weigh in is NOT tomorrow it is Friday. I mixed up my days.... sorry!
Wishing everyone the best of luck!
Trying to get my progress ready to report tomorrow and was wondering if we had a consensus as to what types of activities count as exercise.
I know things like aerobics, treadmill, Wii all count. I shoveled snow for an hour this morning, and sure hope that counts since, I 'm too wiped out to do the treadmill after that! Any other things? Housecleaning? Laundry? Yard work for you gals lucky enough to not be buried in the white stuff!
I went back 15 pages or so and couldn't find anything where it was decided.
Thanks
-
Seaside look at the header.
Meece posted all the details.
And weigh in is on Fridays
-
Sheila,
OOOPPPSS... Show's how my week has been going... I thought tomorrow WAS Friday...lol
I see where Meece has 1 pt for each 30 minutes of exercise but what I was wondering was, what TYPES of things count as exercise.
-
I believe points are given for the total amount of exercise you did not the type.
Walking vacuuming as long as you are using your body is exercised.
Right Meece?
If I went outside and clean my DDs car which is buried in snow and if it takes 1 hour I guess i get 2 points.
Seaside..You gave me a good idea. Thanks.
-
Thanks for the clarification, Sheila!
If you DO go out, bundle up! That wind is really starting to kick up at least where I am in NY! Brrrrrrr!

Hi Moderators - could you perhaps include sleep with the other items to be tracked? I have often wondered is it easier to loose / maintain weight loss when you are getting sufficient sleep - I feel that the weeks I get insufficient or bad quality sleep are the weeks that my weight misbehaves. It would be interesting to track it. I think the important thing is that the trackers should be uncomplicated to use and easily edited or corrected if we make mistakes. Thank you so much for your interest and help.
Seyla - my captain - I am happy to report that I have had a good week regarding exercise, and water intake - not sure what the story on the scales will be. Haven't slept for more than a couple of hours each night - Mum tends to ramble around all night and it keeps me awake - I took the extreme step of asking her GP to prescribe a sleeping tablet for her as I just can't keep going like this, so tonight will be the first time I give her one so I hope it will be OK.
Fellow Roadrunners - I hope every one is doing well - we can do this.
Fellow E-LAB members - this has really become a great thread - great ideas, support and great people.
Meece - Oh Great One - you really are exceptional and I really appreciate the work you are putting into this - it is such a great support to me and even tho I don't post everyday - The E-LAB ideal is never far from my mind but then again neither is chocolate !!! LOL
I think I'm getting over my cold although my cough is still annoying. Fingers, toes and eyes crossed for Friday!!
-
I hope everyone is having a great week and is keeping up the momentum of encouragement.
I for one actually got my 32 oz. of water/non carbonated or sugary liquids down today before 2 pm. That has to be a record for me. I came home from a lunch date with a friend (At which I had a grilled vegetable burrito, so yummy and lots of vegies!) and set my alarm for one hour. I went out in the yard and pruned and clipped and pulled for the entire time. I made sure I Wii'd this morning and added a little fun exercise after my challenge workout.
Moderators: I would like to follow body measurements in the tools since developing muscle may not lead wo weight loss, but inches lost. Also monitoring calories, activity levels and sleep would also make a difference. If we could print out the tracking graph and be able to take it to our medical appointments, that might also be a benefit.
Ladies: if you feel that something you have done has provided exercise, then count it. Vacuuming would probably count, but I can't say dusting would.
-
AinM, I've seen article mentioning lack of sleep being tied to overeating and obesity. When you think about it, being tired makes your brain send out the signal, "Get me some energy," which often gets interpreted by the body as hunger or lack of food (even tho' it is from lack of sleep.) Giving your mom some sleep meds. might get you BOTH a good night's sleep. Good Luck!
-
Moderators: It's great to see your continued involvement & interest in our little bird-house.
I'm another one that would appreciate a tracking mechanism, but would want it to be very simple to follow, easy to update and would be lovely if it could be 'personalized' if necessary.
How about when we 'sign-in' to BCO and enter our password, it takes us to a personal charting section, in a manner similar to our ability to navigate within the 'personal message' section. I personally would want weight and exercise to be able to be entered, and in detail. I personally don't know that I'd be diligent enough to enter food/eaten calories, but could imagine that would be a very helpful tool, if someone was committed to using it.
Since I am currently finished with active treatment, this other thought is not for my benefit, but could the tracking mechanism be customized to have a calendar section for the tracking of medical appointments? Here's another thought. What about having a section where we could enter our physicians and their phone numbers/contact info.
This would create an all-in-one-location for all things BC: appointments, physician contact info, medicine schedule.......... and then personal weight, exercise etc.
Thanks again for asking and of course thank you for BCO in it's entirity.

Go BIRDIES!!!!!

ditto what elimar said. I saw the same reports on sleep being tied to your health.
Ainm, good step getting the meds for your mom. That's going to help you in taking care of her.
I like all the suggestions about tracking so whatever comes out of it can only be a win-win for all.
Night. (and I'm definitely counting my shovelling today!)
-
Moderators, I find that I'm not sure what amount of calories I take in each day so it would really be helpful to me to be able find a way to track what I ate and the calories for that particular item. ie, if I ate a cup of cereal, what is the calories for that and post it to the daily intake. This way along with the amount of exercise I was doing would give me some measure of intake/calories burned. I think most people, especially me don't have a clue what the average portion should be.
I looked on a couple of websites that offer this but it was way to confusing to me so I didn't go any further. A couple of them gave a week free of tracking but then charged after that. This is a long term process for me so I need to find some way to track calories, exercise, water intake, and sleep.
Thank you so much for being interested in our welfare, both mental and physical.

Time to clean out the fridge. Good time to read labels, too.

Okay, I say work is hazardous to our health! Now I know that most people don't like them but I absolutely love fruitcake and someone brought one in to the office today. It's absolutely impossible to bypass most food in an office setting! So don't look for much in the way of weight loss at tomorrow's check-in. I'm good on the exercise and water but junk food - well, Rome wasn't built in a day.
-
Hey Patoo - you're right, Rome wasn't built in a day - BABY STEPS!! Thanks for that reminder.

THURSDAYTHURSDAYTHURSDAYTHURSDAY
Golly did I have a smile on my face this morning, stepping on the scale. I will hold my breath tomorrow in the hopes of seeing this number two days in a row!!!
Everybody get up and move today!!!
Turn down those "extras" whenever possible today/tonight!!!!
Drink your water.
Be sure to check in tomorrow. Everyone that checks in -- even to say hello, earns a point for their team tomorrow!!! Drink your water.
xx00xx00xx00xx
I have a HUGE/ENORMOUS/GLORIOUS/AMAZING possibility coming together and I'm smiling from ear-to-ear in anticipation. Can't wait to tell you all about it!!!!!!!!
I think smiling ear-to-ear must burn an abundance of calories!!!
-
I was pretty pleased stepping on my scale this morning too... hoping for the same numbers tomorrow! I really have to step up the 'get moving' part...
I am a little worried because I took a break from Tamoxifen for 4 months and my onc really wants me to start taking it again...I told her I would take it for 6 months but if I gain weight or my SE's are horrible, I am done! Not really sure it is worth the 5% decrease in recurrence...
-
Patoo, work is hazardous to our health.... we had a sub bring in a big bag of Ghiradelli chocolates. There must have been 6 different varieties. UGH. I really like the dark chocolate with raspberries. Hard to resist sometimes when it's placed right in front of you!
-
Mom's house was hazardous to my health today. Just when I told her I had to leave in 30 minutes, she had to have me try out a coffee drink she likes with some dipping cookies. One cookie, but a mug of this cross between hot cocoa and coffee. Just plain tea at lunch though, and water this morning. I double dose of exercise this morning, too.
Check in starts in what 2 or 3 hours, for you night owls.
-
Meece,
Had to laugh at Moms... A few months back I was at my Mom's house and she was talking about how she had an iced coffee with caramel flavor (I want to say it was from Dunkin' Donuts but not sure on that). She was so proud that she had recreated it and wanted me to try it.
I did and it was delicious! So we sipped and talked and talked and sipped until it was all gone.
As I was getting ready to leave, I told her how great it tasted and asked how she made it. Turns out it's ice, coffee, and a large SCOOP of caramel ice cream!!!
Acckkkkk, no wonder it was so good!
-
Uh-Oh Cranes,
If O2B and faithandfifty's posts mean what I think, we are in for a BUNCH of competition from those Hummingbirds tomorrow!!
Glad your scales are lookin' good, ladies!
-
Hey ladies, can I join the flock? I'm good about exercise and lost 10 pounds, but my diet needs work if I'm going to lose another 20. That's my goal, by June 1.
20 pounds in 20 weeks seems reasonable to me. Rather not post my weight though...
I set a goal of walking 500 miles last year (did 490) and set a goal of 600 miles this year. That's the 1100 in my sig. line. I'm visual and it's motivating for me to watch the miles rack up. :-)
-
Badger, would you like to join the flock or the cranes?. You are more than welcome to join. Let me know.
