Thinking Out Loud.....

Diane...Where I am we hardly loose power.
Maybe one of those stupid ones that masses up with all your electronics.
I think the last one was when entire New England lost power. August 2003 I believe. And it lasted 23 hours
-
My laptop is plugged in as we speak, or as I type, but it is no good without the internet! Yes, I guess I could watch a movie or something too.
-
The only thing will work is the stove.
Try cooking with a candlelight......
i have a desktop
-
When our power finally came back on, one of the lines to our house had disconnected so we go some sort of negative only charge which blew every single appliance in my home from sub-zero to tv's. Guess what, power companies don't have to pay when that happens nor do insurance companies - it is an act of nature/God.
If you have laptop, I am assuming you have wirelss service which may still work
My FIL is thrilled to be here missing the storm and worried about his house at the same time.I am just glad he is not there shoveling at 86 years old.
Back to rads tomorrow......
Stay warm ladies! Sheila, maybe you should call the guy from BB and B to come over to keep you warm too
-
The store closes at 9.
-
I have sterno to cook with and I can cook on my grill. Last black out my DS cooked spaghetti O's with sterno. LOL! My Italian grandma would have died!!
-
Linda...You were affected right (August 2003)
-
I remember that one because my FIL was here when it happened and insisted on flying back to deal with the ice storm and power outage.......
I know it's corny but what I recall of those storms when I lived in MA or in ME is the sense of family and neighborhood that arises. That doesn't happen with rain

I have a stupid question for you ladies. I never know how long leftovers are good for so I always throw food away that is probably still good. How long would you eat leftover roast beef? I cooked it Friday. Think we can still eat it tomorrow?
-
yes, but probably not Tuesday.
-
Yes and freeze whats left.
-
Thanks - we have quite a bit left over. The kids don't really like it. Maybe I should put what I don't think we'll eat tomorrow in the freezer. I should have sent some home with my parents yesterday. They just took turkey.
-
I sent everyone home with food and still have tons of left overs. I am the Queen of Freeze!
-
It's not a wood stove it's a gas stove and it keeps the whole house warm. It's really coming down out there. My aunt just called me, she is worried about loosing power even with the wood stove that they have they still can't keep the house warm and they are in there 70's and my cousin is disable. I am going to pick up a small coleman stove when the yard sales start up again. I could cook on that out in the mud room.
-
Ugh - I'm such a bad cook. It's embarrassing at my age. It's one thing when you're newly married in your 20's, but 20 years later, you should be able to cook a meal for people. I was spoiled for years - first going to my grandmother's, then my parents' and in-laws' houses for holidays. Now they are looking to me to host holidays. When I hear what you all prepared for your holiday, I wonder how you do it. My food came out okay, but it could have been better. And I could certainly have timed it better. I was disorganized and frazzled. I don't know how people do it.
-
You can always order your food and just reheat. Or a ham is the easiest thing to me since you only have to reheat!
-
This year I didn't have a big Christmas Eve party like I usually do. I just was not in the mood with my DD in the UK visiting her boyfriends family and then her boyfriend is taking her to Morocco for her 35th birthday. We went over my aunts house for dinner on Christmas. When you plan on having a dinner for a lot of ppl, prepare the food in stages. I would do some dishes a few day ahead and just reheat that day.
-
I've learned what things freeze well, like calzone, and I make that in advance and freeze.
-
One good thing about having a garage full of camping supplies is that we have options for cooking. Assuming we have fuel - which I think we have. The small canisters are handy - I think we have some. If not, we have something we could hook up to the camper tanks, I think. And there is the grill. Small propane stoves are handiest though - to heat up Spaghetti-O's, etc. LOL There's always peanut butter.
-
I tend to dry things out when I reheat them. Or if it's pasta, the noodles break apart. I'm telling you - I'm hapless in the kitchen. I have no patience, I think that's my problem. Last year, I asked Santa for one of those warming things so I could cook some parts of the meal in advance and keep them warm, but I didn't get one. Maybe I will get one myself for next time.
-
I can cook.
I just cant bake.
chris like Deb said i always prepare everything day before to the detail.
Of course if you are roasting meat or poultry that's done the same day.
like if you need to chop parsley do it and store it. last minute you can garnish it with.
-
My brother-in-law likes to cook - they've been hosting Thanksgiving. He has a small oven, but under it he has a warming drawer. So he makes squash and turnip and potatoes, etc. in the morning and puts them in the warming drawer. Then later, he puts a ham in the oven and then cooks the turkey in the backyard in oil in one of those big propane heated pots. Works out well.
-
Deb..I felt the same way this year. DD & Fiancee 11 hour away.
Local DD separated from the BF.
I couldnt even go and be with my little angel and my good friend.........
-
I can bake. I LOVE to bake! I love to cook too. Maybe next year Chris should just come to my house. Bring the family!
-
Garnish? What's that? (jk) I'm lucky if I remember all the food!
-
You really can get some decent meals all prepared for you. Try that some time. Or just come by. My ex MIL is in Fairfield and she is coming next Christmas. I will have her stop and pick you up along the way!
-
Yes! I will come to your house! But your DS's would probably find my DS annoying...he's a little immature for his age. Not that I'm in a hurry for him to grow up - but his classmates are.
Oh no. Local DD separated from her BF? When did that happen?
-
Nah, mu kids are immature too. All boys are!
Your DD deparated? Am I missing something?
-
It was long time ago, February 2010.
One more time chris sorry but how old are your children?
-
We'll make it easy for her. Your ex MIL can pick us up at the commuter lot in Manchester off of I-84. (I'm assuming she'd go that way.) LOL.
