Baby it's cold outside

I hadn't heard. Prayers are definitely in order.

I just went to her profile, she hasn't posted since 8-27-10 on any of her threads.
Rae-where are you?
-
Maybe she is on winter vacation!

Hi ladies
Thank you all for your concern for me. The earthquake was a biggie (7.1 on the Richter scale) but was in the South Island and affected the city of Christchurch. It is about 600 miles away from me here in Tauranga (I am half way up the North Island) but was felt to about 60 miles south of here. My twin daughters are in Welllington our capital city which is right at the bottom of the North Island about 350 miles from Christchurch but there was no damage there. There was no loss of life thankfully but lots of damage to buildings and power and water supply and the port has major damage we are told. I have just seen on the internet news that a light plane has crashlanded near the Franz Joseph glacier further down the South island and all 9 have been killed - not a good day for NZ today.
I should be so lucky Meece! I have just got to the end of a RIDICULOUSLY busy week because, apart from my normal work, I ran an afternoon tea for 200 old people at half time at a high school concert on Monday, lots of stress Wed and Thurs because the woman who was going to accompany my daughter at her university voice and trombone auditions next Thursday in a city 1.5 hours away, said she couldn't do it so I had to try and find someone at short notice and yesterday and today I have been helping my DH set up his new office in town - he was working from home until now but has to employ someone and there is not enough space here. I am EXHAUSTED....
We had a humumgous hail storm on Sunday and it looked like it had snowed afterward but the weather has been kind since then - was very hot on Monday - no woolies needed that day - and quite mild for the rest of this week. Predicting fine on Monday and rain again Tues. Lots of lovely daffodils and freesias out and roses are making leaves.
-
Sounds exhausting Rae, but glad you are OK for the most part!
-
Oooooouch - burnt my forearm with hot oil making chips for dinner - nice lacy pattern of raised welts appearing. I blame Femara for making me the cluyz that I am at the moment. Ran it under cold water for 10 minutes as they say and have silver cream on it now but it is stinging pretty good. Fortunately it is my 'good' arm. Hope it stops stinging before I have to try and sleep or it will be an uncomfortable night. There is always the US Open to watch at 1am I guess if I am still up.
-
Rae--try an ice pack to the burn, too. Helps with the stinging and the swelling. Sorry you got burned, sounds like it's hot enough there without this kind of help!
-
I have several Aloe plants that I use on burns. My grandmother always had one on her porch for medicinal pruposes, and I have that plant's younger generations. When I was going through chemo, I had moved to a small rental a few months before. It had ben years since I had cooked with gas, and two decades since I had used a range with the burners, over and broiler in one. Inadvertantly I had placed my pans in that convenient drawer under my oven, and one night after placing food in the oven, I opened the drawer and grabbed a frying pan, bare handed. I have never had burn pain so bad! The skin never blistered because it actually "cooked" I had tough white patches on my fingers for weeks. That night I grabbed aloe and wrapped my fingers in it, then placed my hand in a bag of ice and kept it there off and on, all night. I feel for you Rae!! Hope you feel better today.
-
Ouch Ouch Ouch all of you! Sounds painful Rae. And Meece, ouch in hindsight!
-
Thanks Native - I did resort to an ice pack before the silver cream. The silver cream is amazing stuff - within a couple of hours the stinging and the redness around the burn area had gone. Put some more on overnight and this morning there are nasty red welts in a area about 3"x3" but it is not sore and it hasn't blistered which I thought it might as the polarfleece sweatshirt I was wearing has melted areas where the oil hit it - amazing how strong our skin is really!
Meece - ouch alright - and I know what you mean about the white patches - I had the same thing on my leg once from touching the hot exhaust pipe of a motorbike - instantly cooked flesh - took weeks to heal.
Beautiful day here today - slight breeze and the sun is out but still sweatshirt weather outside. Going for a walk on the beach with my friend and her dog soon - will be nice to get out.
Fathers Day here today - bacon and eggs cooked by youngest DD - yum!
Enjoy your day
-
OK, I admit to being ignorant sometimes, but I'm curious as to why Fathers Day wouldn't be the same day all over the world, like Christmas & Easter (oops - almost said Thanksgiving-that's REALLY showing my dufus side!)
-
Maybe it is because the Government is the one who declares the Fathers and Mothers Days and each government wants to show independence by declaring a separate day. Oh, there goes my conspiracy theory!
-
Lol Meece - I hope our government is not spending too much of my tax payer dollars dealing with issues like when will Father or Mother's Day be!
Hmmm - I thought it was an international day! like Valentine's day. I can understand having different national celebration days but Mother and Father's days should be universal. When are your Father's and Mother's Days? Our Mother's Day is the first Sunday of May.
Walk on the beach and picnic lunch with my friend was just delightful ( sunny day with a breeze but it was not cold) and then we visited her baby goats when we go home. They are Angoras and are totally white except for pink noses. And gorgeous doesn't really come near how lovely they are and they are so much smarter than lambs - they actually come up to you and check you out - so CUTE.
-
Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May, and Fathers Day is the third Sunday in June.
I can relate to your exhaustion, Rae. I am preparing a bunch of activities for the third weekend in October, and they already consume a lot of my spare time. I watch t.v. working on centrpieces for the banquet, and have post-it all over so as not to forget any detail.
-
It is amazing how much energy and time it takes organizing events even something seemingly simple like afternoon tea for 200. I had about 3 weeks to get it together but you don't realize really until it is all over how much you have put into it. What are the certerpieces made of Meece? Sounds like you will be making quite a few if you are preparing a banquet table. I love to do handcrafty things but I don't get much chance at the moment - am hoping I will have more time when my youngest goes off to university next year and it is only DH and me at home. I particularly love to knit adn sew but hardly ever do either now because it is not really cold enough for woolly jerseys in the winter and my girls aren't interested in wearing home made clothes anymore so I do cross-stitch mainly now. I have lots of photos that need to be put in albums so I may get into scrapbooking in the years to come though.
Am happy to report that my instant first aid to my burns has saved me from what would have been a nasty burn. The burnt skin is still dark red and sore looking but it has not blistered and is not sore - that silver cream is unbelievable.
Storm coming our way again this evening - very windy and getting colder by the minute now. I played tennis this morning but it wasn't very nice because of the wind and I came home early. Meant to be high of 60oF today but the wind chill is keeping it a lot lower than that.
-
-
reainnz--so glad your burn isn't bad! Silver cream is a wonderful thing, isn't it? Hope the storm doesn't cause you any problems.
It's a beautiful, breezy, comfortable fall day here in Maine. Not cold enough to need the furnace running, cool enough to make baking an enjoyable passtime. Enough sun to make things bright, a few clouds to add interest. Perfect day for working on the sun porch. Love being able to ajust the temp out here by opening and closing windows!
-
It is overcast and 83 degrees. Chance of rain today. Cool for us. I hope to spend some time outdoors today.
-
We had a glorious three day weekend with sunshine and good friends who came to visit. We even had a fire in our forest and shared many, many laughs.
-
This weekend was a wonderful peek into the cooler temps of fall (lows in the 50's and highs in the 80's) but back to summer like temps this week, lows in the upper 60's and highs in the 90's.
-
The weekend was in the low 90s. After today the weather should be in the 80s and high 70s. Got the front yard pretty much ready for Fall planting.
-
Baby was it COLD in northern lower Michigan this weekend. Rain every day, high wind warnings and it was mostly in the low to mid 50s during the day.
Today it's 79 outside but another Canadian Cold Front is on the way tonight. Tomorrow in the low 60s but temps will recover by the weekend thank goodness!
-
Just reading your post makes me shiver. Or is that the AC the co worker turned down to 68?
-
I knew the nice weekend was too good to be true....back to fog and 62.....brrrrrr...
-
Brrr. I am not ready to be cold again. I get really inactive. Must be cold blood doesn't move as fast.
-
I'm not ready for cold either. It has finally warmed up to 59 at noon here in mid Michigan. I dread every winter more and more.
-
High today should be around 83. The temp was high 60s this morning, and the weatehr guesser advised parents to send their little ones to school in a light jacket or sweatshirt.
-
Whoo getting chilly up here in the (Great white north) Even the leaves are starting to turn. Enough said Mexico here I come.
-
Temps are still more seasonable (70's daytime, 50's night) but the humidity came back. Yuck.
-
We reached 90 today, but it is currently 79 and raining. My DH and I have decided that in Florida, it has nothing to do with temps when leaves fall off trees. Our leaves are starting to fall off along with acorns on the oaks. They must have decided they had been on long enough.
