Is Anyone Doing an Alkaline Approach

Pure - Really, stay away from fruit? I have wanted to buy the drops to add to distilled water but I can only find distilled in plastic jugs. I stay away as far away from plastic that I can. Where do you buy the salts? No carbs? So what do you eat, just veggies? I am already so thin, if I just eat veggies I will blow away!!! Do you have any ideas what I can eat to gain weight and stay within the alkaline approach? I welcome any suggestions. Thanks.
Peace and Blessings to all, Patty

I got my vitamin d back today from blood test, last week onc said i was taking to much d (5000) but i took it anyway, just started about 6 mos ago- levels were 43.6 reference is 30-100 same onco said just keep doing what your doing he said i need to be more in the middle like around 50 he also said you dont want to much because it effects the kidneys and then it cant get rid of it- so i was glad to see i wasnt taking to much and wont worry about taking that high of a dose.
Pure- When you say mag free on the bsoda do you mean magnessium (sp) i looked on my baking soda and it and it just says sodium carbonate- also was wondering if you did mean magnessium is that bad for you- i take a calcium w/ magnessium every day- thanks for all your help .
-
Pure where do you get the salts and what are the salts supposed to be doing for you?
I have been drinking the ALK water from whole foods, juicing and eating little meat and sugar.
Wondering what supplement of food could help with increasing energy, I am really pooped by 4 pm and would like to increase my energy levels.
-
lol thats a good question:) I only wish I had that problem! Remember you need to be alkaline 70-80% of the time. I do eat a lot of fish. I also eat the Ezeki bread and make vegetable sandwitches. Infact you could do Ezeki bread with Almond Butter-Almosd butter had a ton of fat and protein. Dr Young believes that when you are totaly Alkaline your body will return to it's natural weight.

Come on, you guys! Honestly, you desperately need to educate yourself about the body's blood acid base balance. Keeping your urine alkaline isn't going to do a darn thing to keep your BODY in an alkaline state - your body does that automatically, 24 hours a day, every day of your life. Your body will automatically strictly regulate it's PH through the respiratory and renal systems and, short of hyperventilating yourself into unconsiousness (at which point the body will take over and rapidly readjust itself) you can't consiously do much of anything to alter that rigidly controlled narrow window of acid/base balance. I work in an ER and I see people who have body PH levels 6.8 or so and guess what? They're either dead or soon to be. So obviously, if someone has got a urine PH at that level or below, and is still alive, well and talking to you, it's proof positive that urine PH and venous or arterial PH (the PH of the body) don't correlate at all.
Just because a urine PH might read below 7.0 doesn't mean that the blood PH, which is what reflects the acid/base balance of the body, is also at 7.0. Normal urine and blood PH levels are totally different. Alkalizing the urine will NOT alkalize the body. I'm not at all opposed to some forms of alternative medicine, but when it doesn't make any logical sense, doesn't even have any basis in fact and completely contradicts human physiology, then it's quackery...and people are making money one way or another from convincing vulnerable, desperate people to believe it.
Can anyone here explain just exactly how alkalizing the urine is suppose to help/benefit someone with breast cancer??

MarieKelly,
You are right that the body can self correct when it is too acidic. But the body cannot self correct without paying a price in other areas. Diet can affect this acid base balance. This has been known for some time. A diet high in animal protein is acidic and a diet high in vegetables is alkaline.
Here are some links and snips from PubMed. I think it's great that so much research is being done on diet and nutritional supplements. This has all come about fairly recently so I thought you would like the information.
Influence of nutrition on acid-base balance--metabolic aspects.
Research Institute of Child Nutrition--Forschungsinstitut für Kinderernährung--Department of Nutrition and Health, Dortmund, Germany. remer@fke-do.de
Abstract
BACKGROUND: Nutrition has long been known to strongly influence acid-base balance. Recently, we have shown that it is possible to appropriately estimate the renal net acid excretion (NAE) of healthy subjects from the composition of their diets. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11842946
Diet, evolution and aging--the pathophysiologic effects of the post-agricultural inversion of the potassium-to-sodium and base-to-chloride ratios in the human diet.
Frassetto L, Morris RC Jr, Sellmeyer DE, Todd K, Sebastian A.
University of California, San Francisco 94143, USA.
Abstract
We know that clinically-recognized chronic metabolic acidosis has deleterious effects on the body, including growth retardation in children, decreased muscle and bone mass in adults, and kidney stone formation, and that correction of acidosis can ameliorate those conditions. Is it possible that a lifetime of eating diets that deliver evolutionarily superphysiologic loads of acid to the body contribute to the decrease in bone and muscle mass, and growth hormone secretion, which occur normally with age? That is, are contemporary humans suffering from the consequences of chronic, diet-induced low-grade systemic metabolic acidosis? Our group has shown that contemporary net acid-producing diets do indeed characteristically produce a low-grade systemic metabolic acidosis in otherwise healthy adult subjects, and that the degree of acidosis increases with age, in relation to the normally occurring age-related decline in renal functional capacity. We also found that neutralization of the diet net acid load with dietary supplements of potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) improved calcium and phosphorus balances, reduced bone resorption rates, improved nitrogen balance, and mitigated the normally occurring age-related decline in growth hormone secretion--all without restricting dietary NaCl. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11842945

marie, your right we dont know and dont have proof if this really works, but pure let us know about a friend that it has helped weather that was the reason or not we are willing to try anything and to tell you the truth it makes sense to me, so i will try it, if i feel better then at least im feeling good at he moment, if it doesnt work down the road, at least i have tryed somthing and i wont regret it, so come on marie, try it and see if it works for you then you can say it does or doesnt work for you- hope it does for all our sakes- lets keep the positive attitude and who know we may find a cure before any one else does ( yeah)

debbie....You are soooo right!!!! That's just it in a nutshell.....For those of us that choose to change to a anti-cancer lifestyle/diet and see first hand the positive results from the oh-so-many better choices since dx, it is to say the least giving us a healthier body if we ever have to fight this bc again....We all can pick and choose what makes sense to us from the imformation we gather...If thinking about the alkaline/acid balance in our bodies gets us on an all over better health kick, well that is great, it also gives us a feeling of control in this out-of control bc world.....I have just started gathering info on the alkaline effect and will try to understand the benefits/cons and make a personal decision as to what I will do...The information so far that I find interesting is below...
Chewing your food well is the number one way to alkalize your blood. Your saliva is alkaline. When you chew your food well, you create an alkaline solution in your mouth that you absorb into your bloodstream through the process of digestion. Most people do not chew their food--they chew two or three times and then swallow. In order to maximize your saliva's natural ability to alkalize your food, you need to chew 50 to 100 times.
Keep in mind that eliminating meat and dairy from your diet is the second most important way to alkalize your blood.
Avoid nightshade vegetables if you want to alkalize your blood. Nightshade vegetables include tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant
Understand that sugar is extremely acid-forming. Although it is a hard habit to kick, reducing your sugar intake will alkalize your blood
Umeboshi plums counter the effects of sugar and animal products. A simple umeboshi tea will alkalize your blood. It is great to drink if you slip and eat a sugary snack.
I don't know if marie was just talking about the testing aspect of alkaline or if she questioned the ability to be able to adjust the alkaline level in the bloodstream by changing our diets....We all just have to do what we think makes sense to us...... -
This thread began with a testimonial to the brilliance of Dr. Young and his alkaline diet. If proposing a theory that an alkaline diet to improve overall health was the only thing he is promating, then I wouldn't have an issue with him at all. However, this man is in the business of SELLING PRODUCTS; he operates retreats, markets books and dietary and herbal supplements. Those "retreats" cost many thousands of dollars to attend and one can only imagine the wealth he has accumulated from hocking the rest of his wares. Underlying ever health scam out there is a little bit of factual science (just enough to impress the vulnerable) and that little bit is then expounded upon to create an illusion of legitimacy. Just one glance at his website and all the products he's selling and it's more than obvious what he's all about.
Pure wrote: "I emailed him yesterday to ask what his success rate was with breast cancer and he said 100%/ He is also the only known sciencetist to ever reverse ALS in a patient here in America." A statement like that should be an immediate RED FLAG scam alert because there couldn't possible be any truth to it. Anyone who states that they have a 100% success rate in curing or treating a disease such as breast cancer or ALS is trying to pull the wool over unsuspecting eyes - and apparently having great success according to what I'm reading on this thread.
I'm still waiting to for someone to explain how this alkalizing diet and special alkaline water and supplements benefits those with breast cancer. Aside from instilling a sense of health and well being in those who fervently believe in it ( likely a classic placebo effect), and aside from the general health benefits of weight loss (which most anyone could also accomplish from following a regular healthy diet and exercise plan), how EXACTLY is alkalizing the urine helping breast cancer patients???
-
To me, this topic along with the many other mind stimulating topics cause us to investigate anything that we feel may be of benefit in this bc life...We all have the common sense to take the info and use it as wisely as possible....In the mean time, I will keep adding a wedge of lemon to my water and chew my food to get the most out of every bite of whatever it is that I choose to eat towards the benefit of my own personal health.....
-
MarieKelly,
You bring up some very important points. Many of the books and websites related to supplements and diets are scams. Perhaps most are. Those who have spent thousands of dollars on machines to change their tap water could also change their pH by eating more vegetables. That is the point of the links I posted. A diet high in vegetables is linked to a lower rate of cancer. Of course vegetables bring more things to the table (pun) than an alkaline pH. (A good water filtration system is probably a worthwhile purchase to remove toxins from the water.)
Many of the drugs we take have SE's of bone loss. Controlling pH does help to reduce that loss. One of the links I provided discussed other positive results that come from reducing the acidosis of our systems. Even if controlling pH only produces a placebo effect, that effect is still real. We are just beginning to research the mind/body connection. http://www.wired.com/medtech/drugs/magazine/17-09/ff_placebo_effect?currentPage=all
Again, your basic point is well taken.
-
marie kelly- I am totally in agreement that there are a lot of health and diet gurus out there profiting grotesquely and making money off desparate, ill people. Like you, I try to research everything (ad nauseum by the way). I never take one person's aproach as the end-all answer. I certainly don't buy their products, attend their retreats etc...don't have that kind of money and it is not necessary. Thankfully, the internet can provide SO much good information how we can help ourselves get and stay healthy with the right kind of diet. About 5 years ago DH and I went on the Sonoma Diet (not so much a diet as the Mediterranean way of eating). Not only did we both lose about 40 pounds and keep it off easily, DH now has no need for BP or cholesterol meds. Many of the new eating for health diets have common factors (eliminate or reduce meat and dairy, sugar, white flour, rice etc...). I am trying to continue to build on our already pretty healthy diet to optimize my health. I recently got "The Cancer Fighting Kitchen" cookbook and my whole family is loving the recipes. I also like karenhurd.com. Her "poison rug story" is just mind blowing. Her courage and determination (fighting the medical opinions) is inspiring. She has lots of good information on her site and it is free. I'm not sure if I agree with all of it (she uses Soy). Like everything, I take what feels right, and leave the rest. As for testing my urine, I'm a former nurse and agree that doesn't make sense. Besides, I can't be bothered....just happy to be peeing a lot during chemo!
-
Marie- Yes, you have brought up some interresting points some of which i question to as far as any one saying they have a 100% cure rate, however, from a lot of research i have been doing lately since this thread started, not only Dr Young but other sites as well have all reported on the effects of alkilizing the body and how much better it is for you, this is how i understand it, Alkiline water helps to destroy free radicals in the body and over time will lower the acidic Ph balance in the body, buildup of acid or acidopholois is linked to common modern illness such as, diabetes, ulcers, high blood pressure, and even forming the cancerous mutations that are all linked to the acidity in the body- Im still learning all this stuff myself but it makes sense, my onco also has told me some foods to avoid being er+, some being, acid foods, sugar, folic acid, he said the jury was still out on soy, but i avoid that too, or try.
Designer mom I believe the testing of the urine is for your own satisfaction of knowing you are doing all the right things for your body, and that your alkiline levels are where they should be, just like when i go to the hospital for testing they want a urine sample because it tells a lot of what is going on in your body, at least thats what im guessing, im no dr. but if that is a waste of time, then it is also a waste of money for me and will feel like i no longer need that test if in fact what you are saying is correct, being a nurse i suspect you are??
Somanywoman- hey,i ate lunch today and chewed my food A lot longer, and one thing it did for me was make me fuller faster so i didnt eat as much (yay) i can see the benefits of that and have heard that down the road some where, thanks for the reminder, also, Tomatoes??? Say it ain't so LOL, I love them (uggh)
-
debbie- I won't say testing urine is a waste of time. However, as Marie Kelly said, your urine can test acidic or alkaline and that does NOT necessarily mean your blood is. More research needed. The more I research food and diet the more fascinated I become. As I said, no matter what diet it is (alkaline, anti inflammatory, Mediterranean), they have a lot of common principles. There is also a lot of new information that you can change your hormone levels with diet. One lady on a thread said she declined Tamoxifen (not that I necessarily will) and is impacting her hormones with diet and supplements. Her Oncologist is monitoring her bloods and seems to agree it is working. I don't think there is any ONE right answer. We are the brave new world of guinea pigs. All of what we are testing will hopefully benefit others too.
-
designermom- thanks for clearing that up about the differenc in testing for the blood, see we are all learning here (smiles) Like you said there is no One right answer, i for one would not of given up my chemo but now that i have finished i want to be more healthy and stay healthy so this site and others help us to stay educated and see whats out there
Hugs,
-
debbie..Doing chemo would have given me a 2-3% benefit so I chose not to do it...I am trying to make that percentage up by making better choices as to what I put in and on my body...I do a lot of research as to anti-estrogen/hormone/pesticide/you-name-it foods and have had a lot of benefits as to losing weight, lowered my cholesterol, boosted my Vit d etc....So I know that the benefit is there just by making better life choices...My whole family has benefited from this...I have my nineteen year old son craving fresh fruit smoothies....I don't do any one thing overboard but I read up on things and then make my derived decisions...I think that most of these healthy diets do crossover each other and just thinking and making better choices are of great benefit...Just a note, I have not had one doc give me any information as to eating a better diet since dx, I usually give them the info on the health benefits and believe me some of them need to listen, esp., my surgeon, his belly is getting larger everytime I see him....
I am also trying to chew my food longer, but the most chews I can get out of one bite is about 20..I don't know how you can get 50-100 chews unless you're chewing beef jerky or maybe taffy....My Dh and I were having a contest to see who could chew one bite the longest...He won!....I'm also a tomato lover, lately the ones I get have no flavor so it makes it easier to eat less, but I won't be giving them up.....
-
debbie-You have me LOL about your BS big belly! I have noticed that a LOT of my doctors and nurses could benefit from a diet makeover. As a former nurse, I can vouch for the pathetic ignorance about nutrition that our medical folks have. I can't remember the exact number, but I think doctors only have something like 10 hours of nutrition instruction, and most of that is the "old fashioned" government recommendations for diabetes etc... Which means all of us are definitley more knowedgeable! Like you, I have decided to become the "Kitchen Dictator". Instead of feeding my 11 YO what he wants (white rice, bagels etc...), I don't buy it anymore. Guess what? He is perfectly happy eating whole wheat and brown rice! No options, no dilemmas! We are "foodies" and love gourmet food. I have found our healthier diet don't deprive us in the least. Some of my favorite cookbooks are "The Sonoma Cookbook" and "The Ecological Kitchen"- by Lorna Sass. The Sass book is actually Vegan and dairy free (though I have used it for 10 years before that was the vogue). It has tons of bean and legume dishes. She gives both the pressure cooker timing or stovetop. It actually is the book that got me using a pressure cooker (I was terrified of them as my mom's blew up!). It lets me make bean dishes in no time. I think it is fabulous that all of us are involved in this healthier eating revolution. Now if I can just get as enthusiastic about the exercise.......
-
We have a garden and our tomatoes are doing really well. I don't believe in avoiding foods as nutritious as tomatoes. It is fine to have an alkaline diet but tomatoes are loaded with lycopene which is good for the heart. Since many of our meds can damage the heart, I think that tomatoes are always going to be in my summer diet.
I don't eat store tomatoes for two reasons. 1) they taste like cardboard. 2) I think it is important to eat fruits and vegetables in season. That is how we originally ate. In the winter I eat California avocados. By the end of the season, I am tired of what ever is that season's fruit of vegetable and ready for the special of the new season.
-
notself- I agree with you about tomatoes. I think we need to research whether they actually acidify. Though they are acid, so are limes and they actually alkalinize. Regardless, I will not avoid them in season. As you pointed out the lycopene is excellent for heart and also prostate (not that I have that, but DH does). I make a great whole wheat summer pasta salad. It has garden tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, salt & pepper, fresh basil and some shredded Brie cheese. Put all this in a bowl (uncooked) and just add hot, strained pasta and toss. Sometimes I add raw spinach before tossing. Heavenly!
-
DesignerMom
I never thought of adding Brie. What a wonderful idea. Raw spinach and Brie sounds yummy. Do you chop the spinach or leave it whole leaf?
-
notself- I usually put the whole spinach leaves in the collander and dump the pasta and boiling water over the raw spinach which cooks it. Then into the bowl with Brie and other stuff. I usually put the Basil in last, stays more fragrant. Enjoy!
-
you all are making me hungry LOL! be right back as i go make me a garden salad with avacodo and tomoatoes LOL!
I caught my onco smoking around the back parking lot, i couldnt find a spot out front so pulled in back, i was kinda of imbarressed for him because he ducked inside really fast!
-
Thanks for the spinach/pasta/brie/basil idea. I think fresh tomatoes added also sounds good - with a bit of olive oil. Question: do any of you have either the kangen or jupiter water ionizing filtration systems? I'm thinking it might be a good investment. I think Dr. Young might recommend the jupiter one. My friend has the kangen and loves it! She had lots of positive things to say about it - but it's quite a bit pricier than the jupiter - at least from what I could tell this a.m. Investing in my health is worth it to me!!!!!
-
Debbie: I just read through this entire thread and I would like to add my input. I go to an integrative MD who put me on alkaline water (I have someone nearby who sells the Kagen water) and lots of lemons. He also has me take 8000 mg of Vit D3 with Vit K1 called Vitamin D Synergy by Designs for Health $15 and he told me women with BC should have their levels tested at the 80 range because we are all lacking in it!
For Women with BC and those of you on Tamoxifen: This link should be read by all:
http://www.breastcancerchoices.org/melatonin.html
I have been doing alkaline water since May of 2009 and was diagnosed in September of 2009. I do it all, vegis, juicing, flax, etc. I am also doing the antioxidant diet by Dr. Perricone, the skin care product guy. I love it because it gives you what to eat every day so it's a no brainer. I try to change it up a bit and add my own recipes, but I highly recommend it for those who need a well rounded diet that is high in an antioxidents.
Also, someone wanted to know if there was a substitute for dairy with the Budwig diet and you can use a soy or coconut yogurt as a substitute with the flax.
-
MBJ- Thanks for the great link. From the breastcancerchoices.com site there are also fantastic links to cosmeticdatabase.com (check out your personal care products) and other sites. Thansk for the info!
-
designermom: you are welcome! I have been to that cosmetic site and I also do the Iodine protocol from breastcancerchoices. They list dr's on there, too.
-
So I havent been on in a while but here is my thoughts:
-I eat and try to live an alkaline lifestyle b-c eating predomitaly vegetables, excercising, sweating out toxins, drinking a gallon a gallon of water a day, staying away from meat and sugar all makes PERFECT sense to me.
-I don't care what you call i living Alkaline-living heathy-whatever. I believe 100% that staying healthy will help keep my cancer away and if it did come back it will help me fight it harder
-I am not selling anything-just sharing as someone shared this lifestyle with me and it changed my life. If it helps one person then I feel good about sharing
-I feel bad for people who feel the need to attack others and always assume the worst like your selling something. If you don't believe in it then dont join the thread or read any of the posts. Why do you feel the need to log on and be so negative.
All I can say is I feel great and I am so blessed and thankful to feel this way. I have learned a lot from Dr Young and other natural paths that have helped me change my diet and my life.
-
BTW when he says 100% cure rate that means everyone that has come to him and followed his diet is all doing fine. I have no idea how many people have come to him-maybe 100 maybe 4. I have no iead. I did see one lady on Oprah who had stage 3 and followed his diet and is now cancer free. I could care less if he is telling the truth or not I no that this diet makes me feel amazing and I wanted to share. I also encouraged people to go to his site and read up on him.
-
MarieKelly.FYI it has NOTHING to do wtih Alkalizing the urine. It has to do to making sure your entire body is alkaline and that being with the BLOOD. Yes you can test your urine or your saliva at any given time during the day. If you want more information on how it can help with Breas Cancer find him on facebook and read up and judge for yourself.
and for someone that doesn't know anything about it you sure have some strong words about how it's false and doesn't work.
