Several years back when my StepMom and Step AUnt were dxed with Breast Cancer Flax seed was recommended and they added it to their drinks breads cereals etc.

They were both highly ER positive and one is 15 year survivor and the other is 25 years both stage 3 BC.

I have been doing much research and I don't believe that Flax is anything but just Good for you> You can read about it everywhere if you google it there are like 33000 posts and the research is starting to go back to the FOR Flax after BC.

I have a question and I posted this on Pures other thread on Stage 3 as well. I started the water on Sunday and by yesterday I had a weird metallic taste in my mouth. I was wondering if that was from the other water I drink tasting funny now? I tried a Liter a day of Alkaline water, then a couple of regular glasses of water in the evenings.

I wondered if since I was getting some regular water each day that the metallic taste was from the after taste of that water. Anyway just wondered if you all had any feedback. I really can't believe it but I have been doing this since Sunday and juicing and I really feel great..I mean better than I have in awhile and played 18 holes of golf today in 100 degree PHX heat. I think you are on to something here PURE!

I'm interested in all that has been said and would like to jump in with questions. My background:  I've given up most all my sugar, white flour, and milk products. Don't like red meat or pork. Still have some fresh fish and rarely chicken that's hormone free. I do have dark chocolate occasionally. Well every day to tell the truth. It's from the HFS and wrapped around an almond.... UGH.

I bought the ph strips at a health food store. I had some that I used years ago when my nutritionist was helping me recover from an allergic reaction to products I was using. Go figure... I should have kept up with the program. What do the citrus do to people with acid stomach? Does that get neutralized also? Also, where do you get your water from before filtering? Does everyone have city water or do you buy spring water and filter that too? I use Himalayan salt because of the mineral properties. Wondering if it's similar to the sea salt you all use.

Don't miss the coffee with the tons of creamer/sugar any more. I drink green tea at work and even took my own pot in so I could brew it. Everyone else drinks coffee!

Yeah I am not scared of the flax seed oil I did do daily shots but it was so nasty so now I get this great oil from my grovery store that is a combination of avacado-olive and hemp. I do 2 tablespposn daily and it's good. I also put the seasalt on the oil and drink. I am going to add hemp oil this week as well. Be sure to get real sea salt and add it to everything and really try to push yourself to drink a gallon of water a day. I have lost 47 pounds to date and this was WHILE going through chemo, tamoxifin, my ovaries removed and now on an AIL so it can be done no matter what your situtation. I am off to kickboxing to sweat sweat sweat and then to the farmers maket forsome fresh vegetables:) Have a great Saturday!

I was diagnosted stage 2 in my right breast, triple positive, with intense HER2. I bought Dr. Block's book, read it, and started on his diet 2 weeks prior to my surgery.  I went cold turkey from an 'all american diet' to vegan.  I noticed a difference in my energy level within the first 2 weeks.  I have lost 25 lbs. and feel like a million dollars.  I met with six different people my first visit to the Block Center including a stress management specialist and a dietician.  They took about 20 tubes of blood and recommended a supplement list according to my deficiencies.  They also recommended a mastectomy.  I opted for a double mastectomy for better symmetry as I age.  15 lymph nodes were removed with no spread.  I also chose to have reconstructive expanders put in at the same time as the mastectomy. My reward for having to go through all this: non-saggy breasts!  I had to have another surgery two weeks later because some of my skin died and became infected.  My plastic surgeon said I was healing very well.  I chalk that up to my new diet and supplements.  The Block Center then recommended 6 treatments every 3 weeks of TCH followed by only Herceptin every 3 weeks to complete a year.  This would reduce my chances of reoccurance from 40% to 20%.  I waited 3 months before starting chemo.  I would highly recommend this.  It gave my body time to be good and healed and filled to the size I want to be.  The worst thing that could happen is implant rejection during chemo.  I had my first chemo Aug. 6.  The Block Center orderd a heart echo every three months because of the herception and blood work 3 days prior to each treatment. L-Glutamine was added to my supplement list to prevent neuropathy and help with inflammation of mucus membranes which cause dry mouth, mouth sores, burning, peeling, or swelling tongue (not fun by the way). If I would have been taking this about a week before chemo I probably could have avoided the burning tongue.  It returned to normal saliva production after about 3 days.  They also added CQ10.  I take 8mg of dexamethasone 2x per day, the day before chemo, chemo day, and the day after.  On chemo day they administer a bag of supplements first, followed by benedryl, antinausea medication, taxotere, carboplatin, and then herceptin.  24 hours later I take a neulasta shot in the belly.  I had no nausea, a small amount of bone pain the 3rd day, and the burning tongue.  I did not lose my menstral cycle yet which they said might happen.  The block center also recommended I take tamoxifin for 5 years to reduce my chances of reoccurance from 20% to 10% but after reading about PH I don''t think I am going to do that.  I have a feeling that eating vegan puts your PH where it is supposed to be and that is why you have so much energy eating that way.  I am going to purchase some test strips and test this theory.  Bottom line, you are your own best advocate.  Take charge of your future and you will feel less like a victim and more like a victor!

jenn and debbie -- There have been many clinical studies done recently on Vitamin D dosage, most especially with MS patients. There's a theory that because MS is most prevalent in countries farther away from the equator (Canada, Scandinavia, Russia etc.) lack of sunlight and exposure to it could be a factor.  A well-regarded MS Clinic in Toronto (at St. Michael's Hospital) undertook a year-long study of MS patients, gradually increasing their dosage up to 50,000 IUs per week and then carefully monitored any SE's.  There were none!

I think most oncs, when asked a question about dosages, for example, just say "No"  instead of saying "I don't know -- I'll have to look it up".  It's safer that way (for them, and for their patients, I guess).

BTW, I tested low so my PCP has upped my dosage to 5,000 IU daily.  Yes, he's done the research Smile.

Great topic.   I too have been doing research in this area.  I have been researching filters - very expensive - 1000 to 3000, so I have been using alkaline drops added to my glasses of water in the meantime.  Can be found an any health store or web site.  I like swansonvitamins.  Most of the veggies are high in PH so it makes sense that a veg diet helps this.  Also beef and dairy is high acid (as other meats), another reason to cut them out.  Interesting on the lemon, because Dr. Ann Louise Gittleman of the Fast Track Detox Diet recommends starting each day with 1 glass of warm water with lemon, then nothing for 30-45 minutes, followed by a a little fruit (berries or cantalope), about another 15 minutes after that you can go about your day.  She says it cleanses the liver, but it also seems that this is another way to raise PH.  We hear a lot about asparagus, and this veg rates a 8-9 all on its own, so another reason why it would be good.

On the water, I have used my PH strips - which is not the best way to test water, I am looking a buying a good water testing meter - but even my spring waters that I buy all test low, and my body tests very low (5.7).  I see that Fiji water has it right on the label at 7.5 so I have started buying that.  And my filtered tap water does ok after add the drops - I can raise it around 1 point.

There is also a connection between magnesium and PH which I am still figuring out, which is also where the sea salts come in - its all intertwined and confusing.  I try to focus on things that help me adopt a better lifestyle, and do not conflict with chemo treatments (which I support very much - too many success stories)

One last thing, although I am very aware of the quackery that is out there, there are some 'magnesium sticks' that can be added to a bottle of water.  They cost under 100, so I think I am going to buy one.  Honestly, with all I have invested in supplements and such, and I do have new under-sink water filter that filters out chlorine (no tap water!)  I figure I would rather risk 100 than spend over 1000 for a ionized alkaline water filter until I get a better picture for all of this.

yes try to get at least 20 minutes of natural sun a day. I take 5000 mg a day..My friend who has the multiple my,omia takes 50000 iu a day-Dr Young believes in that large amount for people actully fighting cancer-not someone considered NED. I do take 5000 mg.

Also, I can't stree anough the sweating aspect-You either pee or sweat out your toxins so drink up and exercise when you can. I just walked 3 miles in 90 degree weather but I feel great getting all those toxins out.

I would aslo suggest going to wholefoods and geting cholorphyill and add 3 drops to an 8 ounce glass of water. You will notice a difference.

I own a water ionizer which turns your water from your faucet to alkaline wate. My system was expensive though $1300.00 but I wantd it so my kids could benifit.

You can buy distilled water and add ph drops to it... I don't like the fact that the distilled water sits in a plastic water container and I am sure at some point sat in a hot truck and the chemicals from the plastic seep into the water but I did do this route until I could afford the water system.

I posted a recent strudy that just concluded that large amounts of vegetables daily prevent bc cancer reoccurence by 50%.  It's a pretty valid study. I posted it under the stage 3 forum.

So for me this moring I had cherry tomotoes from the farmers market (yellow ones-they were so good) then I had vegetable juice. I did 3 miles of of walking and had a vegetable burger from trader joes with more tomatoes. I have drunk 2 liters of alkaline water so far. And I plan on having a vegetable sub for dinner. Now onto my shlew of supplements...:)

Have a good day! Keep eating clean!

Would it be possible to get the ph tested with a pool chemical tester? We always had to test our pool for acid/alc to make sure it didn't get bacteria, etc. When it was to acid we added baking soda! The test kit usually tests for more than ph so it's possible to just buy the bottle for the ph if you want.

Pure, i use only distilled water, now you have me wondering about the plastic it is sitting in, that never crossed my mind before- good reason to tell hubby to buy a water system

samsue, just learning all this stuff myself, hopefully some one will have an answer for you soon

samsue, health food store have PH tape you can use to test. Costs about 10$ and the tape is about 16 ft long. Should last a long time. I still am using one I bought 4 months ago and I test 2-3 times a day.

Humm not sure about that pool water tester. I think you can use it to test the ph of your water though. I would try.Distilled water only works if you add the drops.

Lemons and Limes are both very alkaline believe it or not. I add a lemon each day to my juices to cover the taste.

I'm not used to the city water out of the tap. I've always had a well and it didn't have all the "extra" stuff added to it. And, I didn't have to worry about neighbor down the street dumping their old prescriptions into toilet! That is until the last 5 years! Wondering if that might have contributed to this BC.

We were at a company meeting for the annual "drug" information so we could be a drug free workplace. One of the questions someone asked was "what should I do with my left over or old prescriptions?" The speaker had never been asked that before.... he said I guess dump them down the toilet or throw them in the trash. This past year he said they needed to be taken back to the pharmacy so they could discard them. Can you imagine how much is really going into our water supply? I've got a filter but wonder if it's working well enough.

BarbaraA thanks for the information. I have the ph strips to test urine and saliva. I was wondering if the ph at the sink that we filter  could be tested with the pool type ph tester. I'm going to check it out.

    Hi Julia,

Very interesting that acidic food has an alkalyzing effect on the body. So I guess this is why we have to avoid sweet stuff, such as sodas, refined sugars etc. because they have an acidic effect on the body.

My mother used to drink apple cider vinegar every morning, so now I understand....she was alkalyzing her body.

    Edited to add:

I think I was eating way too much fruit. I am now balancing my fruit with more veges. I even begin my day with veges for breakfast, esp. cruciferous ones. Sure causes a lot of foodfarten though.Embarassed

Hi ladies, I've been intrigued by the discussions on this thread re:  alkaline diet.  I still have 1 round of chemo to go (next Thurs) and want/need to figure out how I will rebuild and strengthen my body.  I was thinking about ordering a case of Alka Pure water from Amazon to see if I notice a difference in my energy levels.  I've also put on 20 lbs. since dx with BC :-( and need to shed the unwanted pounds.  I have a great twin gear juicer and enjoy juicing veggies and fruit, but just lack the energy at times.  Pure, thanks for starting this thread!  I'm glad I'm not the only one craving sugar!  Please keep the info coming!    ~  Daiva

    Good Morning to all,

WOW, you have started a wonderful thread,   I had cancer two years ago, TWO lumpectomies 6 months apart, 35 Rads in between.. Almost 2 years to the day.... Bad Mam.  Stereotactic biopsy showed cancer again, same brest, same spot.  only two different kinds,  IDC and HER.

After the Lumpectomy and Rads, I felt I would never regain my energy level, I went to a helth food store for a simple blood prick test, She told me that I showed all signs of radiation piosoning and I had to build my body backup.  She also said that htere was parasites, so I had done several clenzes but they didn't work

Going back after 6 months, she thought she saw candida, which is a fungus, that if you research, If left alone WILL cause cancer.

    Ibought a book , EAT RIGHT YOUR TYPE< by Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo.  It's a must have.

Until I was told of the candida, I had not changed my diet, and I confess, I was a junk food junkie.

On dec 28, 2009, the stereotactic showed cancer again,  On Jan 11, 2010 my BS said that my brest had failed me and had to be removed.  You all are the only people in the world that understand how that feels......    I came home to prepare for surgery........ It was Gods will to have my surgery date pushed off till Feb. 23,2010.  All I did was research.  I called a ladies that has been into oils from Dr. Gary Young for many years.  She is also a retired nurse so that makes it that much better.

I asked her what she would do, She told me that she and her sister had already dicussed what they would di if they had been diagnosed, they would fly to Equador and stay ate the clinic until cured, I reminded her of my two small children and my husband, So she guided me into the right direction, with Youngliving supplements and oils.  From early Jan til 1 week before my surgery, I used Frankincense and lavender oil one each of my breasts two times a day.and also under my arms , for the lymps.  My path report came back NO Malignacy found.  I also forgot to include that i WAS ON MANY PEOPLES PRAYER LIST AS WELL AS HERS.  You have to believe the oils are heling you as well as see it.

I now TRY to stay on a very strict diet, It also takes alot of Prayer.  No beef or pork.  mostly tuna salom veggies and fruits.  I was told to become a label reader, White flour turns to sugar in our blood.  I'v cut out most things that I love.  But Its all about our CHOICES.  and I chose to live.

I also keep check on my PH.  I also use a tsp of baking soda in water if my PH is outof range.  I also drink alot of water with lemon oil in it.  They say that everyone should drink their body weight in warter each day.  This has been quit a journey, I was told that i need to take Femara, and after talking to an insurance lady, she said If I had trouble with Tamoxifen, that I would not be able to tolerate it.  So... I started taking Arimidex, < I hurt so bad, everywhere, joints, bones etc.  So my PC dr said to try to cut themin half, still I hurt.

Aug 23, I had appt with ONcologist,  I told her I was not going to feel like this anymore, I am 46 and I feel like I'm 90, My 75 yr old mom can run circles around me.  I will NOT take it anymore, and It's all about choice.  She asked me to take 1 -81mg of aspirin 5x a week.  There are some studies showing women on that dose, for other reasons had less reccurance so I did agree to try it.  I will also continue to use my supps and oils.  I'm sorry my comment is so long, but I have been waiting to hear from a natural and spiritual healing.

God Bless & Prayers to everyone dealing with cancer

About the sugar cravings, It will take a good two weeks to remove sugar.  It's still a battle for me.  I have read, you can put dill around your wrist to help with the cravings, but have not tried it yet.  I was totally of sugar before my surgery, but you will find when you follow this very closely that it is almost impossible to dine out,  That is tough.

Hi ladies - I've been following this thread and you all have some wonderful ideas.  I just wanted to pass along an article about having an alkaline environment in your body.  It touches on many of your points - but also has a list of alkaline foods at the bottom as well as points out that too much exercise is not good.  Here is a link:

    http://amazinggrass.com/2weekchallenge/key_four/

All aspects of a lifestyle make up one's whole balance.

There are essential balancing acts within that whole balance, and your PH balance is a primary indicator of that total state of health. Whether your body is in an acid or alkaline state will determine the quality of life you will experience. You may have heard the term "Acidosis". This refers to the condition of your blood and having a PH that is too acidic. Acidosis is not one specific disease. It is the pre-requisite catalyst and breeding ground for other diseases to develop and be nurtured, such as cancer, osteoporosis, heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, obesity, diabetes, allergies, kidney stones, premature aging, and many other degenerative diseases. It is possible to have Alkalosis (too much alkaline), however it is not very common.

Over 90% of the population today is too acidic and has Acidosis.

PH is a measure of how much acid is in the blood. The PH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14 (0 = pure acid and 14 = pure alkaline). Our body strives to be more alkaline, about 7.3 - 7.4. A variant of as little as 2 full points towards acidity, such as 5.3, could be fatal. There are two different types of acidic foods & alkaline foods. Most people are familiar with acid or alkaline foods, which means how much acid or alkaline the food contains. The second and more important is acid or alkaline forming foods, which means the PH condition which foods create in the body/blood after being digested and reabsorbed into the blood stream. This is what changes the body's blood PH levels. Acid-forming foods create an acid ash when completely burnt, while Alkaline-forming foods leave an alkaline ash when completely burnt. The importance of reaching a balanced PH state in the body cannot be emphasized enough. If one truly cares about their quality of life, body, and spirit, then this should be taken very seriously. As mentioned previously, the acidic state is the root of most disease, sickness, and emotional/mental problems.

Scientists have found that cancer thrives in an acidic solution, while it is unable to survive in alkalinity. Just as an embryo grows rapidly and flourishes in the mother's womb surrounded by amniotic fluid, a germ grows quickly and strongly in an acidic environment. By creating an acidic state in our bodies, we are therefore encouraging disease and chaos to be created within. An inconvenient truth is that germs are not the source of disease. We create our own harmful & polluted inner environment, which in turn allows the germs to multiply, feed and create their own pollution.

There are a few simple and common factors, which disrupt the alkaline balance:

Our thoughts, emotions and stress-levels are very strong factors that are often overlooked when trying to reach alkalinity. They physically create large amounts of acid in our blood when being experienced. Your thoughts are creative and will have a physical manifestation. This is a saying that is very true. Stress can cause serious breakdowns and problems within your body no matter how healthy you are eating. That is why stress-management and deep-breathing exercises are so important and can change the state of your body.

All natural foods contain both acid and alkaline forming elements. In some foods, acid-forming elements dominate and vice versa. Such acid-forming foods include animal proteins, cooked oils, alcohol, pasteurized dairy, caffeine, refined/processed grains & carbohydrates, and most cooked nuts & legumes that have not been soaked and/or sprouted first.

Other prevalent factors that induce an acidic state within us are: tap water, most bottled/spring water, distilled water, smog, radiation, pesticides, chemical preservatives, food dye, and additives.

Lastly, over-exercising your body can actually create an acid state in the body. When people are so concerned about losing weight and go to the gym 2-3 hours daily and are not losing the weight, they get frustrated and stressed. This state of being can create too much acid (lactic acid) in the body. Exercise regularly but moderately.

When the blood is overwhelmed with acid ash from foods and stressful emotions, the body relies on a few keys to neutralize acid:

    • When acid is present; the body must then absorb and neutralize it to become more alkaline. Luckily our bodies are designed with alkaline cell storages, which can soak up the acid to neutralize it. Unfortunately these cells can mutate and become abnormal cells because the acid, during the neutralization process, actually strips the negative charge surrounding the cells. This causes the cells to "glue" together and possibly form malignant/cancerous cells. Simply put, acid could be referred to as glue. Since there are only so many alkaline storages available at a time, the body must use other tactics.
    • Another tactic is for the body to produce fat cells, which absorb the acid and neutralize it. The unfortunate result creates many unwanted fat cells roaming the body. These cells eventually will lose their respective +/- charges, clump together, and move sluggishly, until they are stored in pockets. This creates excess body fat and lowered energy.
    • The veins and arteries are defenseless culprits of acidic blood. They are the transport system for the blood to flow throughout the entire body. If the blood running through a vein is highly acidic, a hole could be burned through the vein, allowing the acid to invade the rest of the body. To prevent this, the veins and arteries create and form plaque surrounding the inside walls. This plaque buffers the wall, not allowing the acid to burn a hole. Consequently this self-defense mechanism can be detrimental to one's health. Clogged veins and arteries are precursors to heart attacks, high blood pressure, and many other heart-degenerative diseases/
    • One last common method of protection is the muscles. Muscle tissues will also absorb and neutralize acid when there is excess for a long period of time. The unfortunate consequence here is that the muscles eventually become "flabby" because the muscle tissues are breaking down. People eating a very acidic diet to lose weight (high-animal protein) are very likely to lose more muscle tone quickly than one who is eating a balanced diet.

There are 4 important steps one can take to reverse the acidic state:

    1) Purchase PH strips, which can be found at pharmacies or health food stores. It will have a chart to show you your PH number. Check your PH in the morning before eating. Normal is considered 7.3-7.4, however, above 7 is still considered healthy. The main concern is when your number shows 6.5 and below.

    2) Cleanse the body of toxins that have developed and taken residence over the years. Drink lots of alkaline water to hydrate, cleanse and alkalize your system. Also drinking a "green drink" daily will add to your alkalinity and aid in the cleansing process, including, wheat grass, chlorophyll, green grasses, spirulina, etc, such as the Amazing Grass produced Amazing Meal. These superfood products are excellent sources of alkaline foods.

    3) Identify choices to create a target balance of 65%-80% alkaline-forming food; 20%-35% acidic foods; and a minimum of half your body's weight in ounces of alkaline water.

Example categories of alkaline-forming foods and beverages include:
    • All organic fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Sea vegetables such as kelp and nori
    • Fermented foods such as Kombucha Tea, miso, tempeh, unpasteurized yogurt
    • Raw, sprouted nuts & seeds (almonds are the most alkaline)

You can refer to my Acid-Alkaline Food & Beverage Chart below:
    4) Find the disruptive pattern or emotion that is creating stress in your body and work on reversing it. Try yoga, a walk, deep breathing exercises, meditation, or simply being aware of acid-causing emotions as they arise. You are hopefully seeing how the first four keys are designed to prepare your body and mind to make purposeful choices that will improve your balance, energy and total health. We've discussed how toxicity can build up over time. The fifth and next key will explain how to optimally cleanse your system on a daily basis so that these changes you are making can have optimal results.

    Hi Daiva,

I was very tired after my chemo. My naturapath gave me a liver detox and 4 weekly B12 shots to restore some of my lost energy (I was sleeping 12 hours at night). Also I was told to cook a vegetable broth and drink 2 cups daily from that. You have a juicer so that will be great for you.

These drugs are very powerful and really zap the energy and it is difficult to get motivated when our energy levels are so low. Even going for a walk can be like climbing a mountain! One way to counteract the fatigue and get motivated which worked for me was to take books on CD out of the library and walk listening to novels. This was a great way to focus on something else other than BC. I still do the walking and listening every morning.

One thing I would say is that try to stay away from fruit. I know it sounds crazy but it's sugar and there really is no fruit that is Alkaline except for bannas that are still green. I got off fruit and well it wasnt that hard. I do make a protein smoothie when I train hard sometimes and use BlueBerrys as well almond Milk.

Also, the longer water sits the less alkaline it becomes so I am not sure about ordering it from Amazon. I would look into s system or go to wholefoods. Some health food stores have a system and you can bring gallons and fill them up or get the drops and then buy distilled water and add the drops to the distilled water.

I do Dr Youngs salts 2 times a day but you can get baking soda (mag free) and drink that.

One of Dr Youngs techs ( Dawn) is a bc survivor and is currently pregnant. She works at his ranch and said if you can only do 2 things drink a gallon a alkaline water per day and drink the salts. Try to find him on facebook and friend him...His information is so interesting. I have learned so much from him.

Also, he doesn't believe in carbs or bread etc but you can have the Ezekik bread and most grocery stores sell it. hey even have wraps. Also, get a bottle of sun dried tomatoes drenched in olive oil and eat as a snack. Thats really good and very alkaline!
