One cup of cooked frozen spinach has 3 grams of carbohydrate, 1 gram of fiber (canceling out one of the carb grams) and 2 grams of protein.
There is no starch in spinach, but there is carbohydrate.
By comparison, 2 ounces of dry pasta when cooked has 42 grams of carbohydrate, 2 grams of fiber, and 7 grams of protein.

mimi...This diet is working for you. You'll be loosing more than 50 pounds the way you are going. Good for you.
Jaimieh.... You will get there. You have a good exercise plan.
I walk a lot but I don't run.
-
Jaimieh... LOL on finding the 3 lbs. You can do it!!! Just keep on with the running. I wish I was that motivated. Since I started taking this darn Tamoxifen my knees are creaking and sounding scrunchy which has made me a little worried. I'm now taking Glucosamine Chondritin for it. Everyone tells me it takes at least 2 months to work so hopefully in 2 months I may be able to start running some. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, for now it's walking the treadmill very slow.
-
Sheila-Yes, it's kinda confusing. I googled it the other day and still don't know if I can eat squash.
They listed summer squash as okay but never said anything about spaghetti squash and acorn squash. I've cut down fruit except berries. Processed meats-bacon, jerky, chicken nuggets are No No's.Veggies are all okay because they don't process into sugars quickly.
So mostly you eat lots of unprocessed meat, and veggies. Dairy in moderation (Low Fat because of my triple neg status) and very very little carbs. 10 grams or less. I still do whole grain cereal in the morning with 2% milk. Then a salad with meat for lunch and meat and veggies for dinner.
-
Yesterday was hectic so meals were on the run, oatmeal for breakfast, a 250 calorie spinach salad for lunch and fresh vegetable (with some salad dressing) for dinner. Who knows if it will make a difference on the scale. I am trying to cut calories and increase activities. I am also confused by the carbs.
-
I wanna vote again. LOL.
This is my 7,999th post at BCO and that should count for some kind of clout, right??
I had an epiphany over the weekend, when I googled and found out that it takes burning 3.500 calories to drop a pound.
For me, this is going to be about getting more activity into my day, while making better choices on meal selection etc.
ANYHOW.
I weighed in this morning at 145.0 pounds...... even tho it's not Fri, I am appealing to Meece the director of all things E-LAB to post my progress from Fri morning's back-sliding to Tues's turn-around.
Now.
The
HARD
part:
It's back to my 'real life' tomorrow......... which includes much travel.
This morning I walked on a treadmill for an hour and it calculated that I'd burned 271 calories, (not even a tenth of a pound's worth.)
Somehow having this concrete information in my head has led me to making better choices.
Please, Meece??
Pretty please??
Everyone find ways to fidget. There are studies that have proven that the fidgeters burn more calories. My new motto: fidget. Get up & down from computer/couch to brush my teeth, make the bed, go get some water yada yada.
Folded the laundry yesterday while doing leg lifts.
Walked the block while sucking in my stomach.
In other words, just a bit "more" than what I would have done before Friday.
xx00xx00xx00xx00xx
On to the beach and post number 8000!!
-
This is a pretty good listing of the carb count of various foods.
-
I have a trainer and he "makes" me keep a food log every day, so I have it on a blog and he gives me "lovely" comments about my eating habits. Got in big trouble for the sugar cookie and tagalongs I had yesterday. Oh well, they were very good. One of the goals for me is kind of what Faith was talking about, my trainer wants me to get up from the computer every 15 minutes or so and do even a minute of exercise. He says a minute of exercise several times a day can be just as effective as a big chunk. So, I've been working on it and will continue to try this method of exercise.
-
Alright Faith and everyone else do not get encouraged when you are on the treadmill and you only see 250 calories burned or whatever the number REMEMBER you are also raising your metabolism. This helps boost your bodies ability to burn fat and also you are gaining muscle which uses a whole lot more energery (calories) than fat. This time change has really started messing with me. I couldn't get to sleep until 3am and then I was up at 8am to do the school drop offs. I am now trying to motivated myself to do something....just something....
-
I agree that exercise not only burns off the calories during your workout, but continues to raise your metabolism afterward.
My new food mantra:
Eat food (meaning eat minimally processed food, not artificial stuff)
Mostly plants
Not too much
Also, I know low-carb is a popular diet, but the WINS study found that lowfat make a difference in recurrence statistics for hormone negative breast cancers. Here's a link to the study if anyone is interested:
http://www.cancer.gov/newscenter/pressreleases/WINSBreastStudy
Thanks, Meece, for starting this thread. Everytime I hear the siren song of a Reese's cup, I see everyone's avatar and step away. Well, at least most of the time I do!
-
Isn't that the truth. I also don't want to let you ladies down by succombing to the calling of that Pepsi (tucked away in my hiding spot). I bought a pair of slacks a couple of weeks ago that has the "tummy control" because they are so comforatable on my post-surgery tummy. But I also don't like tight pants, which is what I am limited to lately. I vow not to buy another pair of size 12 pants. I will still buy these comfy slacks, but never a 12 again! Can't wait til they get too comfy!
Yes, Faith, I will post your weight, you are not early for this week, just a little late with your weigh in from last week.
-
Washed windows today and am sore all over, hope I burned a few calories!!!
-
Meece: thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. Now I'm seriously motivated!!
Carolinachick. Do you have the book with that philosophy? Our SIL lost enormous amounts of weight following the author's regime. He then gave us the book for encouragement, but I hate to admit I haven't even begun it. He has had HUGE success.
Suz. You have a trainer?? How cool is that? And you post your food intake on a blog for the world to read??? That is seriously an amazing concept. WOW!
I have a thyroid that is ka-put officially and hence does little to regulate my metabolism. I am on a prescription which hasn't seemed to make an iota of a difference in the 3 years that I've taken it..... but I suppose without it I might be as big as a redwood.
Everybody up and walk around the couch!!
xx00xx00xx00xx
We leave tomorrow and will be no where near a scale for Fri's truth-telling. I will work to behave, but with this being my official return to my real-life, post BILAT, I may just indulge in peanut M&Ms and other nonsense...... but I will do so, realizing the amount of effort it will require to walk them back off of my thighs.
Information is power: 3500 calories per pound!

Check it out:
The M&M Walk:
How far do you think you need to walk to burn off one little M&M? To find out, visit your local high school football or soccer field with a bag of M&M candies. While standing at the goal line take one M&M candy out of the bag and eat it. Now walk off the calories you've just eaten by walking the full length of the field. It takes walking one full length of the football field to burn off one M&M. Repeat these one football field M&M walks as many times as you care to. (By the way, one small bag of M&M's contains approximately 53 pieces of sugar-coated fat...that's 53 football fields of walking). Be sure to hook your pedometer on your pants to record the amount of steps you have covered during this exercise!
This information is about plain M&Ms
-
Oh my goodness, I had no idea about the M & M's. That is huge motivation to not put an M & M in my mouth. Thanks for that visual Meece.
I do have a trainer Faith, I can only afford two or three times a month but he gives me good strengthening exercises and he reads my blog daily (and gives me advice). I must admit on all of the various diets I've done through the years, I do best when I have to write down my intake of every bite that goes in my mouth. I always think I'm eating so well and then when I write it down and look I am shocked at some of the awful stuff going through my lips!!! Have a great time Faith (and I did get up and walk around the couch).
Carollynn, 204 calories per hour washing windows - great job!! Here's the website where I found that tidbit (not sure how accurate it is).
-
Suzette-Thanks
Faith, I am having a total tyroidectomy tommorrow, they are completly removing my thyroid my last biopsy in August was negative but mentions cancerour tendancies so since it is contiuing to grow it was decided in January it had to come out. Don't know if it will be easier or harder to lose weight but will keep working at it as I eat too much. My thyroid is actually still working and growing!!!
Will hopefully log in Friday for weigh in will see how I feel and if I am home, have to spend 1-2 days.
Carol

OMGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGoodness Gracious.
Seriously Meece.
That's plain M&M's? Are my favored peanut ones better or worse?
How on earth did you learn that concept? The length of the football field???
Ye gads.
-
Okay so no threepeat for me. I went bike riding instead
So I did get some exercise in today in addition to the cleaning I have done.
-
Jaimieh, I think that's a good thing, doesn't bike riding and cleaning use different muscle groups than running???? I think that's admirable!
-
Jaimieh.....I wish I had a bike a real one. Its so much fun isnt it?
About cleaning the windows, pretty soon all our windows will shine, I like that idea.
Im good no surprise urges of eating. Had few almonds last night. Not the entire container.
Carol...good luck to your surgery tomorrow.
Faith....Have a safe trip and repeat after me M&Ms are not tasty. Water is. Repeat this 10 times.
-
My bike is so much fun. I think I may need to get a new one at one point this summer. I plan on putting the shoes on again tomorrow and getting back out running again. I am determined that eventually the scale will go in the right direction. I also did some stomach crunches, leg lifts and 5 whole girl push ups....lol.... I am going to take it slow because my poor pec muscles have been expanded and then put back together again. I also got a ton of other stuff done which felt good to get done. I have a ton more to do tomorrow but we have had some really nice weather and I am going to take advantage of it.
Carol~ Good luck with your surgery.

PauldingMom...spaghetti Squash sounds very healthy except 8.8 g carb.
I don't know about the 100 g serving is it a handful or more it equals to 4oz.
Off the subject how is your mother doing?
Hugs

Our "wellness" minute at work about a year ago, was speaking of healthy eating choices. We were given the assignment to find out what it takes to burn the calories of one M&M. I found that info in several spots on the internet.
-
Meece...How about Almonds (12).
-
Hanging in there. I bought a couple of the WW desserts, will try one tomorrow. Had plain, cinnamon wheat cereal (dry) for breakfast (14 pieces=80 calories-geez, I hate counting out food & calories, but...), salad with broccoli dipped in vadalia dressing for lunch, & 5 meatballs & 1 cup of whole grain rice with almonds for dinner. An applesauce later. Bought some oranges & blueberries, that will be my breakfast tomorrow. Weighed 148.2 this morning-hope it stays or goes down by Fri.
faith&fifty ~ Love the "fidget" moving - good idea!
Carol ~ Good luck on your surgery, see you Fri. hopefully.
I had bought a heart monitor/calorie counting watch for my walks, but it was big on my wrist & hard to work from Target, so I will return that. Bought a Mio Eurofit Drive Petite & it shipped today. It was interesting to watch heart rate go up & then down during rest, workout & slowdown again.
Meece ~ Your "M&M walking for calories" makes me glad I took my last bag of Mint M&M's to my DD's for the grandkids!
mimi ~ I hope the Glucosamine/Chondroitin works for you, I truly think it has helped me to not have muscle/joint pain for the AI I take.
Oh, also bought fresh spinach - look forward to making "chips"!
{big hug to all-everyone is staying focused!}
-
I am definitely a Peanut M&M fan. Although I like dark chocolate, the dark Choclate M&Ms just aren't as good as milk chocolate.
Tonight is corned beef and cabbage, so I need to be very good today, until dinner.
-
Did everyone hear the big "THUD" as I fell off the bandwagon this morning? I took DD to the orthodontist and he told her to go ahead and eat after her appointment, before her teeth got sore. So...we went to Chik-fil-a and ordered ourselves some chicken biscuits and hash browns. Definitely not diet food! My stomach is now so bloated and painful that I don't think I'll be doing that again for a long while! Tonight is corned beef and cabbage, so today is shot. Even so, I'll try to stay away from the M & M's.
Faith - I don't have the book, but have been trying to keep my fat under 33 grams per day. It's difficult, but I am trying to eat as many fruits and veggies as I can hold. I use butter spray when I need it.
Carol - Good luck on your surgery tomorrow. I don't know what's involved, but hopefully you'll heal very quickly!
-
Thanks PatMom
Seyla888-Mom is doing great. Tried to get her to come to the Relay for Life walk with me but she has her first mammogram on that day and doesn't want to change it. I don't blame her one bit. She's suffering from alot of unnecessary guilt due to my sisters illness (M.S.) I guess all mom's feel guilty when there child is ill even if they have no way to control it.
Okay off to the treadmill. FINALLY got a T.V. in that room so I hope I can extend my time and distance. It's soooo boring just listening to the radio when exercising on that thing.
I LOVE ACORN SQUASH!! Yea!! Zero Carbs!!!
-
When I need to oil a pan or grill, I use olive oil in this:
You put your own oil in it, and pump in air. It make a fine mist so you can lightly spray it on pans or vegetables or salad. It is one way of cutting back on the oil I use. (Yes, I still use oil at times. Cuttiing back, not out.)
-
Meece...I have the same thing which I forgot all about it.
We have to have some oil in our diet. I only use EVOO.
When Im having a baked potato I use very little butter. Probably doesnt even reach my stomach.
