Kari, I think walking outdoors is much easier and more enjoyble than a treadmill. I just put on my pedometer and go, enjoying everyone's gardens, nature, people. I don't pay any attention to how far I've walked until I get back and check my pedometer, although by now I know which routes are at least 4 miles, which is what I like to do when I have the time. (Takes me about 1.25 hrs.)
Penny ~ Congrats to your DS (and you!) on his university acceptance! I'm beaming for you! I'll bet he's feeling pretty proud of himself, too!
Harley ~ I could so relate to your post re. wanting to do something more meaningful post-bc. I'm also still trying to figure that out, too. Did you happen to see the most recent issue of a magazine called WOMEN? Not sure how I started getting it (must have signed up for it when I had chemo brain), but I noticed a couple of non-profits mentioning counseling and/or mentoring as part of what they do, and I was going to check into it. PM me if you want more info'.
I came across a video today that I wanted to share with you all: http://stanford.wellsphere.com/cancer-article/famous-breast-cancer-survivors-video/901272
Here's to singing and dancing, forever, and no matter what........ Deanna

Let's Dance!!!
2 miles every day this week! Yoga half the days. not bad!!
NC girls!!! We are getting some winter weather and freezing temps Friday Sat Sunday!! Get out there and walk now while it's still doable!!!
DH and I will be hitting the malls I guess!
Deanna, 4.9 miles. wow!!! I am doing 2 a day during work. I remember in the old days (last summer!!!) I was doing 4.4!! For now, i am happy to keep doing the 2 a day. Better than zero a day!!!
-
I only managed to do 15 minutes on that torture machine!
Kari and Deanna,
thanks for the support. Deanna, I am sending you a pm ASAP!
Springtime
I will go out maybe tomorrow... I was pretty cold today... and only did 15 minutes on the elliptical.

Forgot to mention last time: welcome, Jess, and any others who are checking out this thread these days. I think we do a great job of supporting each other as we continue to move, heal, and enjoy life. I got up at 5:40 this morning and worked out for 30 minutes, and I plan to do so again tomorrow. I was planning to walk when I got home today but I felt so spaced out I just crashed and slept for 30 minutes, then awakened more focused and a little refreshed.
pk, I get happy when someone I know feels m-a-h-v-e-l-o-u-s, so thanks for the extra nudge toward happiness today. I really needed it after a particularly stressful work day (enough said...). kmmd, I don't even know what to expect of my body/shape anymore. It seems like post-chemo, deep-into-Tamox, and Vit D-deficient has changed my body in some interesting ways, and I am learning about it anew. Harley--I hope you will get some helpful info and support as you try to go back to school. Keep us posted on how that is going ( and how you are coping with that darned torture machine). Kari--Thanks for all your energy & support as usual (not that I take it for granted)! Deanna--I like your "no matter what" comment after singing and dancing. I remember when I was in the midst of chemo, I would still try to dance even when I did not have the energy; sometimes I would plant my feet and just sway but in my head I would still be dancing. By the way, are you thinking of changing careers or volunteering? Spring, walking + yoga = healing; walking + yoga + patience with yourself = healing and more peace of mind. Take good care all!
-
Walked the Dd this morning and then off to the Center. I did 15 min on the tortue machine and then 15 on the treadmill. Inner/Outer thighs and arm exercises. Then I came home and vaccumed and did wash. Now I am sitting here and relaxing. I have some x-stitch to do. So I am going to chill this afternoon.
My roommate and her sister came down to visit. Susan is moving down here to help with her elderly aunt. We are thinking of renting a house together.
My training this weekend has been cancelled for fear of bad roads. So it will now be the end of Feb. Harley it is Road to Recovery sponsored by the ACS. Helping others go down this long road we have been on.
Spring - take it easy. And be careful this weekend. Welcome all newbies and keep dancing!
-
Brenda,
I'm meeting with a counselor at the college next week. She gave me some websites with info about what type of careers I might consider, which will use a bachelors degree... the actual counselors need a MASTERS degree... Oh my!! Don't think I could ever get thru that much school!!
Well... it's out for my run... better get going!
Take care everyone... Be Well...

Oh yes, walking outside beats a treadmill anyday! There are some lovely trails around the city here by work but I have to wait for spring to hit those up again.
Last night had this burst of energy (don't know where the heck that came from) so worked out for an hour and didn't want to stop, but made myself, then overate and overslept this a.m.! No exercise, I'm pooped! And sore!
I asked my pcp for a referral to plastic surgery, so now I have to attend a class on ps next Thursday...I'm finally broaching the subject of reconstruction. yikes!
Joy, love the thought of you with your g/friends and possibly moving out with one.
Shout outs to all!
-
Kari, I've been surprised at how much I am thankful for my reconstruction. Go to an appointment and keep an open mind.
-
Kari
I didn't want to get reconstruction, but my surgeon was adamant about it... he said that I would be glad that I did it, once it was finished. He was right... I am so glad to look somewhat 'normal'... even if it's just 'under my clothes' that looks normal... without the clothes, I still feel strange...
Go and consult with a ps... just to see. You may be pleasantly surprised...
Good Luck!

2 miles today and only needed a light jacket! But I have so far skipped Yoga again! I should go do a few minutes right now!
well it is supposed to start raining tomorrow and get really cold. and rain. ugh.

Hey. I had my six month check up today and the good news is I haven't gained more weight, but I haven't lost any either. I can't seem to get rid of the roll ( should I say buttery roll) around my waist. Blah! Plus, I was stuck in traffic going to the cancer center, so I sat and then sat again when I waited to see the oncologist. Then, of course I had to sit while I waited for him to tell me about my blood draw. Next, I had more sitting while I drove home and then I was so wiped out from all the sitting, what did I do when I got home????? yup, I sat! What was I thinking? Nothing at all and now as I type and.....SIT, I grab at the fat globbing around my waist!
I am truly glad for this thread, because now that I have confessed to my day of "THe SIt" I am ready to work out hard tomorrow. I hope so, I am exhausted!
edited because I can't spell anymore
-
Yes, Kari, you must look into reconstruction! I didn't know you hadn't had that yet. I know it's more surgery, but OMG, you will feel like a new woman when you are finished!
Speaking of recon, is anyone else feeling a bit like a Bionic Woman? I just got the print out from my insurance co. for the nipple procedure I had last month, and it was $3400 -- for one little nipple! I know plastic surgery is both a science and an art... and I love my PS. But that just struck me as kind of amusing for something so small.
Joy ~ Sounds like a nice arrangement and change for you if you decide to move in with your old roommate. Keep us posted on your plans.
I managed to walk/run 4.4 miles this afternoon, but DH & I are headed out of town early in the a.m. for a much needed 4-day weekend, so I won't get back to my routine until Tuesday. Hard to believe, but Monday will be the 2 year anniversary of my dx. If that makes me a 2-year survivor, it sure doesn't feel like I've totally survived anything yet!
Have a great weekend, everyone, and keep moving! (((Hugs))) Deanna

I was lucky because my ps didn't send me any bills... he said that since my dh was in the Navy... Military, he did it all for FREE.... but he DID put thru SOME of the visits and the surgery thru my Tricare, and I only got ONE bill.... the 1st one for the nipple transfer, because they messed up and said that I used the Point of Service option... not true... and my case manager straightened it out for me.
Kari
I think you'll be happy to have even simulated boobs... at least, I was... I was wearing foam boobs in my bra to my dr. office visits and they kept falling out ... how embarrassing...
Have a great day!
No exercise for me... I have to work today...
Harley

You girlies have inspired me on the reconstruction issue. Next Thurs @ 10!! (deep breath) Thanks!!
This morning up at really dark thirty (4:30 yikes), couldn't sleep so did 2 miles and some stretching/ab work. Now I need a nap, but at work, so that won't fly!
Deanna, wow that's expensive !! ENJOY and congrats on your 2 year mark.
All of you always motivate me, each and every one of you. Oh Oh Oh! DH came home yesterday and when I got home he grabbed me and we danced in the kitchen while we cooked! I love that guy!! I'm a lucky girl indeed.
-
Deanna, congratulations on your anniversary!!!
This week was a good exercise week-I walked 25 miles. Some days I could only do 2 miles due to the rain, so I didn't get any days off. I try to shoot for at least 1 day with no exercise. Oh well, the weather is supposed to be a lot better this week.
Kari you are a lucky girl!!
Off to my daughter's basketball game.
Enjoy the weekend everyone.

Flying through!!!
Got my first hair do since regrowth today!!!
I haven't had reconstruction (yet) either so I would love to hear your recommendations/experiences.
Must go it's almost 1.30 AM!!!
(((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))
-
Deanna, Congratulations! 2 Years, and MANY MANY more!!!
Kari, you should do DIEP like Deanna and me! I went to NOLA, and they are very generous with the the lipo! Just saying!
Deanna, I know what you mean about the expense. It is unreal what I see on the EOBs!!! Cancer treatment and recon is expensive. Glad to have insurance!!
I DID NO EXERCISE TODAY!!! I am confessing! no walking or Yoga yet anyway. It is now snowing here! Very tiny shiny sparkles that look like teensy confetti!!!!
I went to an LE specialist today and I have edema on the side of my rib cage under armpit and on my back. I need to go to appts 3x a week for 3 weeks at least to get it under control! Or else it is going to effect my arm!!! Always SOMETHING!
-
Kari
Good luck at your ps appt.
Sounds like you have a wonderful hubby! Mine is silly like that too. We went to a wedding in Augusta GA, one summer, and it was a Southern Baptist wedding. The reception was in their little room, and NO MUSIC was allowed... NO DANCING... well, it was another guy from the Navy BAND... MY DH was in the Navy band... so, he had a cassette tape playing during the little reception at the church. My dh grabbed me, and we started dancing!

Harley and Springtime
Are you getting slammed with bad weather today? I was watching the Today show and they were saying the southeast was a mess. I hope you are getting spared. If not, light the fireplace and read a good book.
-
Got off work at 11 pm Friday and dealt with ice on the high rise bridge and ice on my back steps. Rain today (sat) but calling for cold tonight and I go to work at 7 am Sunday. Also woke up with no heat!! It is now fixed - I'm back to normal. At least I cooked some and exercised to keep warm till the man got here to fix it. Good day for soup, hot tea and a good book.
Harley and Spring - what did ya'll get? Heard the airport in Raleigh is closed.
To everyone else - hope this winter storm misses ya or moves fast.
-
We got 6-7 inches in Raleigh, and then it sleeted for hours, and sort of made a crust of ice on top of the snow and packed it down a bit.
We fed the birds all day! Seed and suet! So much bird activity, you would not believe our back deck!
I did Yoga for over an hour, and not gentle today, I did a more advanced program! Feels good.
Hope you all are well!
No snow on the coast, hey Joy? How about you Harley?
-
Hi everyone. DH and I went dancing last night and I am sore today. It was great and fun exercise. A college nearby hosts a dance called 'Louisiana Night'. We have musicians who play cajun and zydeco style music and we dance away the winter night.
-
No snow here... It rained pretty hard Fri night, into Sat. morning. Then it rained most of the day Saturday, but it has been REALLY COLD.... brrr....
Now it's SUNNY, but FREEZING...
Harley -
We have snow!! Only a skiff so far but is looking like one of those days where it will snow off and on all day.
Didn't exercise Friday or yesterday but went shopping yesterday at a new big mall so did lots of walking. Did buy those "sketcher" walkers, but they are not sketchers, but a different brand and a lot cheaper. Sketchers here are $145 and I got these on sale for $90, so hopefully they are as good. Will see tomorrow as I am going to wear them to work and see if they help my feet and hips.
Would be nice to go dancings but alas hubby doesn't dance. Going to do housework today so maybe will dance while I dust and vacuum.
Have a great Sunday all!
-
Love the dancing stories!!!
And for you girlies freezing, I sure hope it thaws out very soon!! Its finally a beautiful clear sky here!! Its been awhile...will plan a walk OUTside for a change!! My chiropractor helped me quite a bit Friday, I had major issues!!! no surprise there. Will see him again in a week. No exercise yesterday.
Spring, do you think your edema is from your surgery?? Or do they not know what can cause that? get that sucker under control!!! sounds like you are on top of it though.
Time to get motivated...have a great day all!!
-
Hi all! Walked 2 miles in the snow today with DH! It is packed about 3 inches of ice! We were careful and didn't fall! 1+ hours of good strong Yoga yesterday. I had to be careful with some of it, not being gentle, didn't want to overdo, I did okay!
Kari, The edema on that side is from the SNB removing 3 of my nodes, and then yes, the 3 surgeries in 1 year after. I had surgery 12/08, 9/09 and 12/09!!! Too many friggin surgeries!! But i am done now with lovely results, and all I need to do is take care of this edema. I am glad that I have such knowledgable LE therapists. I asked her once this is gone, will it stay away, and she felt yes, it would, unless I have another mastectomy or reconstruction, which I am not planning!! LOL.
I love the stories of Dancing !!!! DH and I seem to walk rather than Dance, but maybe I can get him dancing with me in the kitchen or something.
Love love love, Spring.

I remember a motto about keeping it simple when under more than the typical amount of stress, so I will keep it simple tonight. I am glad to hear how all of you are trying to stay motivated and moving, how you are doing overall. I was able to get up one more morning at 5:45 last week (Friday) for a 30 minute workout, then I worked out Sat and Sun mornings, each for an hour. I have been trying to have a low-key weekend, and for the most part I have been successful. I hope for us all peace of mind, positive energy, and healing however it is needed this week.
-
Didn't get any exercise in this week. Been a little under the weather and it just wasn't going to happen. Feeling a bit better today so will get a little of something in.
So happy Monday to everyone and keep moving!
-
Haven't done a thing, told you motivation was a problem....wonder if I am making excuses,!!
Sandy
-
I was told to go home early today, since business is sooo slooow...
But, I still haven't been able to get myself on that elliptical torture device... It is WAY too cold outside for me to go out there!! I'd get icicles for sure...
