Hi, Maura, and welcome!  If you read through some of the beginning pages of this thread, you'll find at least one research reference to exercise helping prevent a reoccurence.  So I like to think of this group as helping me keep in mind how important exercise is in that regard.  In other words, we're not exercising just to get slimmer or be stronger, but we're committed to exercising and helping others here do the same because we know it has a very significant prevention benefit, as well as all the other benefits.

Gotta run... the game's about to start.  No party this year -- house waaay too messy.  But we did just spend 3 hours cleaning out the garage (yay!), so that's a start.  Got tons of stuff in a stack to donate, and that made room to move some of the accumulated clutter out of the house itself.

I walked just over 3 miles today, 0 yesterday, and 2.5 on Friday.      Deanna

Welcome Maura, just take one day at a time and do what you can "Do your best and forget the rest!" (Tony Horton from P90X, thank god he says that or I wouldn't be doing his workout) Did Kenpow (kickboxing) today, feel great! Watched the game, now got to get ready for work tomorrow.

Hey Joy, your friend is walkin'!

Welcome Maura - we cheer each other on about exercise and life itself. We support each other in everyday life, cry together, and cheer each other on. We are beating the big "C" not it beating us. I am also 58 and going through a divorce and the support on here has really helped me get through it all.

Great game! Watched some of it with the church bunch and then came home.

Walked and did strectches to day and a lot of jumpong up and down for the game.

My issue is finding time even after two years, to fit in exercise with my 'new normal' (ick, how I hate that phrase).

Wife and Mom duties, grad school, dr. appointments, oh, and by the way you also have to stay in shape....

Maybe I'm just in a crappy mood.

Lisa,  one of those days for me too.  Worked a lot this weekend and long week at work ahead of me and I'm pooped already.  I had written on the thread about moderate alcohol use recently about getting tired of the preaching about what we need to be doing.  I exercise because I like how it makes me feel.  I do think the one thing BrCA has done for me is given me permission to insist it is a priority.  I always used to make everyone elses--especially works--needs first and mine last.  I now do not feel guilty about scheduling a meeting for later in the day, for coming in a little later, being late to a get together etc. because I was exercising.  I feel justified in making it a priority and making other things fit about it.  Mom duties will always come first, but luckily DH likes to exercise too and its time together.  Some work things I can't be flexible with, but sure found there were some I could make wait for me.

    Happy Monday!

Tahoe was wonderful!!!  Yes it snowed! Harley I know you are sick of it, but it was great for a Las Vegan to see it.  We stayed in a condo on the lake and it was beautiful.  Did not do much execise, it snowed too hard on Saturday to do anythng but go shopping and eat lunch.  Yesterday the view after allthe snow was also beautiful.

I am hoping to do some exercise today, but I am sooo tired.  We did not fly in until after 10 and as you can see I am up early.  I go in for my first fill tomorrow, so I know I won't be exercising anything  (except maybe the advil to my mouth exercise) tomorrow.

This next weekend we are also going to the snow.  We are going camping in Utah.  I am only going because they promised to bring the air stream with heat and a bathroom.  I do not do tents.

Maura, welcome you picked a great forum.

    GO SAINTS!

I  have to laugh, because the N.E., especially Maryland and DC area got hit with the BLIZZARD of 2010!  I used to live in Maryland!!   LOL    So we moved to NC to get away from all that snow, and last year, it SNOWED here twice, in January!!   But only a dusting...    Now, though, even though we haven't had snow, it has just been SO COLD!  I am a real wimp about going out in the COLD... I just HATE IT!!

    Hi to everyone!!

    YAY!...  SAINTS!!!   YAY!!!

    Hugs to all

Who Dat!  Love when the underdog takes the prize!! woohooooo!!

    Welcome Maura and Lisa!

I didn't do much cleaning, did a lot of sitting yesterday! haha   BUT I did do an hour of workout and felt SO GREAT!  I love working out in the afternoon, but with work, it doesn't happen, has to be around work hours and lemme tell ya, it ain't fun when you're tired from work!!  This a.m. dragged my sorry tushy on the treadmill for 1.3 miles of fun (not).  Had to have some green tea to wake up at work!  Feeling good now though.  Will hit up Trader Joe's on my lunch hour and then back to the chiro after work.

Penny, OMG, while on the treadmill (the TV is on antenna in that room) I got this channel showcasing the P90X thing that you do, holy cow, that is hard core stuff!!  My DD has that too, but she hasn't been keeping up with that lately, she's training for a half marathon...we are not runners!!  I actually have been sneaking in one minute run intervals along with incline intervals on the treadmill.  Legs are sore!!

All you snow bunnies, be careful this week!!  We are clear today! yay  Rain headed back tonight/tomorrow.

Harley, we are FB buddies now!! yay

    Have a terrific day cuties!!

Lisa, welcome, and I hope you'll stick around!  As kmmd said, finding the time to exercise is really about rethinking our priorities, and realizing that we not only have permission to put ourselves up there on the list with all the other demands you mentioned, but it's critical that we do it for our future health.  I think as mothers, especially, we put everyone else's needs first.  Well, I can tell you, I still do that a lot, but the times when I now say, "I have to walk for an hour first," are more and more frequent.  I no longer look at exercising as "staying in shape," but as a key tool in my arsenal of preventive care.

kmmd, I also have to tell you what a gift you gave me when you shared that 10 minute idea a couple of weeks ago.  As I recall, you were talking about the benefit of doing at least 10 minutes of exercise a day so as not to fall back from where we've gotten.  Well, there have been so many days when I don't feel like getting out there to walk, but I've found that if I give myself permission to only do "kmmd's 10 minutes rule," I'm out the door; and most often once I'm out I usually like to keep going.  But then on days when I'm really not in the mood or extremely busy and don't feel like taking an hour, I still feel like I've accomplished something.  So thank you again for what has become a very powerful mantra for me!    Deanna   (4.5 miles today)

WELCOME LISA & MAURA! And, of course, hi to everyone else as well. Maura, I have found this thread to be motivating with regard to exercise/movement, with lots of good ideas about various options, great encouragement for moving when you don't feel like it and kudos when you do move/ workout; the women here are a caring bunch and have offered each other support in other areas as well. Lisa, I was never, ever, a morning person, but since my latest escapade with breast ca, I have strengthened my commitment to myself and, on most weekday mornings, I drag myself out of bed at 5:45 am to work out. On the weekend mornings, I workout first thing. Now my husband is even working out on many weekday mornings and each weekend morning. The payoff for my mood, strength, endurance, and overall well-being has been noticeable; I needed improvement in all those areas (and still do), and I have definitely seen improvement.

Diane, I hope your first fill goes well. Harley, Keep up the good work! How did you not pass out with all that extra clothing on? Kari, I'm glad to hear you made it up this morning; was it dark thirty as usual? I made it up at 5:45 am, and I think I was halfway into my workout before I really awakened. Joy, you are inspiring with keeping up the workouts in spite of a c-r-a-z-y work schedule. And I'm with you: where is Ainm? pk, I remain amazed about the workouts you do. I'm glad to hear that the P90X guy is not insane and reminds you to do your best. (I was starting to wonder....) Deanna, have you always been a walker? kmmd, I like the reminder that there are things which can really wait for me/us. Thanks for that, and as Deanna, reminds us, the 10 minute rule. Take care, all!

    Brenda

Well, there was a breeze, and it did feel cold, at least at first...   when I warmed up, I was just really sweating...  and I almost took off the outermost layer, but I thought if I did, I might feel cold, as I was wet underneath... from the sweat...

    Deanna,

WHOHOO on the 4.5 miles!!    Oh, and I agree...  my main motivation for getting regular exercise is that it is a prevention tool...  to prevent recurrence.

dianenv: I'm with you on the tents.  We rented an RV once and went camping early in the Spring.  Loved it, been trying to talk DH into it ever since.  Those suckers are expensive but oh so nice to camp in. Like my comfort ladies.  If there are mosquitos out, I need an inside bathroom.

Deanna: Laughing about what you said about Moms always putting other people first but training the kids  to realize your exercise can be a priority at times.  My sister has been working on her own kids that way.  I called recently and asked if she was around and this dramatic voice said "Oh no, I can't interrupt unless its important, 'Mom is on the treamill!' ".   I do the same thing with the 10 min rule.  Some days it is all you can do.  Some days you are up for more once you get into it.  But, it does act as a placeholder and keep you from back tracking.

Used it myself yesterday.  Got a quickie on the treadmill before work.  Good thing, guys they tried to kill me yesterday.  OMG I was so tired and feet so sore by the time I dragged home late last night.  Called DH and said, do me a favor and put the short program yoga DVD in the player.  I'm doing it the second I hit the door and not stopping otherwise it wont happen.  He said are you sure its really late.  I said yep, its only a few minutes but combined with this morning not bad and I'm not letting them get away with ruining my exercise program today.  Plus, knew the yoga would help me calm and sleep because after a day like that I'm wired.  Brendatrue, you'd be proud of me.  Got thinking of it when I dragged home that tired and sent off an email tactfully saying I'll help out on that project but you're not dumping the whole thing on me.  It will still be a whole lot of work that week but I'll feel less taken advantage of.

Make it a great exercise day everyone.  I think I'm going to hit the treadmill this AM, and then try to get pilates or yoga in tonight

Rock ON to kick-ass workouts kmmd!!!!!!!!!!!!  Also, had to think about the 10 minute rule this a.m., and did a mile, a rather slower mile but hey what the heck...my shins were aching and I was starting to push it BUT backed off.  Love the 'mom is on the treadmill' line! cracked me up.  I used to get my DDs to exercise with me and they would invite their little friends over (this was many moons ago) and we would all workout together.  Always made exercise a priority in our lives.

Sore from the chiropractor but its helping.  Brenda, I always seem to peek at the clock and its 4:30 or 4:45, so I lay around and call my DH (I call him every morning at work) and then 5:30 its off to put my tennies on and I always think of you!!  You motivate me girl!!

Need to work now, but thinking of all you strong women!  Have a wonderful bright day even though its rainy or snowy out!!

Kira, I don't quite understand what a thrombosis is.  Is it an inflammation along the length of the lymph vessel, causing it to be larger and therefore more visible and palpable than it would otherwise be?  Or is it more like a clot?  And what causes the reduced range of motion, as if the vessel had shortened?  Thanks, I have no medical background, and this is all very mysterious!

I had my first fill today, and maybe my last, and it wasn't bad.  It just feels tight.  My TE is full to the limit.  That being said, I did not walk today.  We are sooo lucky, it is raining again.  Life is good.  Hopefully tomorrow I can walk again.  Stay dry and warm everyone.  American Idol has Hollywood week tonight-my favorite.  I hope Ellen is a good addition.

A little over a year ago, I received my diagnosis of IDC.  4 surgeries later (mastectomy, staph infection removal of expander, put expander back in and finally the exchange), I am feeling healthy and back to working out.  This site gave me such hope and inspiration last October.  I started a blog - www.imlpinpink.blogspot.com, as I train for ironman lake placid as a breast cancer survivor.  I hope I can give some inspiration to those of you who are out there wondering about the future.  Come July, I will be racing in pink for all of you!!

buckle down up north again. here comes another storm!! We are having rain and very high winds for the next 2 days. I'm going to put floats on my tennis shoes. Keep moving everyone.

Ainm - you are still missing. Hopefuly you aren't getting this wild weather across the pond.

    diane,

Great to hear that you may be finished with your fills... yippee!  I didn't get fills... my ps just shoved the implants in under my chest muscle, and filled 'em up during my reconstruction surgery... and BAM!  They were done!!  OUCH!  IT hurt for a few days to a week or so...  but I don't even feel them now.

    lmrunner,

WOW!  You are da bomb!  Good luck with the iron woman....  LOL

    Joy

I'm not an expert by any means on the elliptical...  When we moved to NC, my dh gave our treadmill away...  so I now have to use the elliptical that my MIL gave us...either that, or go to the amenity center to use the treadmill...   I'm lazy, so I usually end up on the torture machine!   I was setting it on 2, but found it was MUCH harder, and I was sore, so I have been putting it on 1...  I guess I'm a real WIMP!   Maybe I'll try to start on 1, and then move to 2, and then for cool off, go back to 1...

I'm so glad I don't live in MARYLAND anymore!   All that snow!  It probably won't melt til MAY!!

Have a great day!  Try to get out and move...  I have found that when I exercise, I don't have as much trouble with the aches from AIs...  I started Femara on Jan 1st...

lmrunner, wow your 3rd Ironman!  That's awesome!

Did 1.3 miles this a.m. on the treadmill - incline program.  Have a little catch in my upper back.  I've been working on boring mailers this week at work and the monotonous movements kill!!  Have to get lab work done for my onc appt. tomorrow...yuk!

Joy, you are doing GREAT!!  Very thick fog here this morning, but this afternoon its supposed to clear to the high 50's!

Deanna, saw 65 expected for your area, that's nice!!

Feeling very luck right now to be living on the west coast!!

Diane, good luck with your fills.  I was able to see and hold a tissue expander and an implant at ps class last week.  Always wondered what they looked like!!  And I was impressed by Ellen last night.  I love American Idol!!

hi kmmd!!  and shout outs to all!!

    Hey all,

I'm here in snowy Cleveland, so I do the treadmill and elliptical quite a bit.  There's nothing wrong with an elliptical setting of 1 - at least you're on it trying to get the time in, that's what I say!!  Good for you!

I had my 4th surgery in June and am feeling pretty good.  Due to a severe staph infection in my 1st expander, my plastic surgery didn't turn out that well (a lot of scar tissue).  But I've come to terms with how it looks and just go by how I feel now.  I feel good, so who cares what it looks like, right?  OK - every now and then, I do care.  But I feel good, I'm back to working out on a regular basis, and life is good.

Enjoy the weather, for all of you who are out of this blizzard's way.  It sure is cold here!!

I think it is great that you are working out again... if you ever start to feel down, just remember how far you've come.  I have been running too, when the weather is warmer...   five years ago, prior to my bc dx, I ran a 5K with my dh...     thanks for your kind words about my wimpy workout on the elliptical.  When I do go outside for a run, I've been running about 2 miles, through my neighborhood.

    Joy,

Today I just did the elliptical for 30 minutes, as 30 seems to be all I can do... but I ran it on 2 and then 3 for most of the time.   WHOHOO!  I survived that elliptical torture machine!!!

    Hi Ladies,

Sorry for not posting lately - it's a classic case of "It's not you it's me" !!!!  I think I'm having a bout of survivors guilt and I'm feeling a bit down.  My neighbour - a lovely man - dropped dead as he was leaving for work on Monday. He just had his 60th Birthday last week and wasn't complaining of anything, it appears he had a massive heart attack.  So I've spent the past two days helping out at his home and today I called to my other friend who lost her son before Christmas and I just get so sad when I see how lonely she is after him.

I'm totally disorganised - the only thing I am doing diligently is my Wii Fit - I go to the office, turn on my computer, shuffle a few papers from one side of the desk to the other and then come home again. Business isn't too good and I'm not much of a support to my husband now regarding trying to get some business in - I just can't seem to apply myself.

As I said the only thing I'm doing is the Wii Fit and as a result I'm still losing weight, in fact I've gone from obese to overweight.  Now I know that most people would not celebrate being overweight but as I have been obese for a long time getting down to the overweight category is quite an achievement.

A really appreciated that you asked after me and I feel that I have a lot of friends here - I'm sorry if I always seem to be in a negative mood.  I'll try and shake myself up!!

    Take care all.
