Baby it's cold outside

We rarely have weather tat precludes us from walking. It is just making the committment to do it. I guess during the heat of the Summer you need to walk in the early morning. We actually have health warnings at time that recommend people at risk stay indoors and we "blsck flagged" when nobody should go outside unless they have too.
The recreation centers open up as cooling centers for elderly people whose homes are not cool enough.
-
I spent yesterday outside tilling in my garden. I set out some of my baby yellow onions which started in my greenhouse.
-
I'm sitting at work looking out my window at the snow falling and glad I'm not outside in the 21 degree (13 degree wind chill) weather
My DH and I leave for Cancun two weeks from tomorrow and I can't wait to bask in warm weather for a week!

I hate winter too!!! What's worse, I was born in Michigan and have stayed here most of my life so you'd think I'd be used to it. If it weren't for my lovely family, I'd move to a warm place in a minute!
-
Suzwes, you are so lucky. Cancun, wow! I am not a winter fan, and I have it a lot better than most of you!
-
The weekend was beautiful, sunshine and 70s, then came Monday.
The fog never lifted the entire day. It was very gloomy. I don't mind it when I am home, but it is depressing looking out of my window at work and seeing this.
-
Temps in the teens again this morning (4th day in a row) highs not getting out of the mid 40's. Chances of snow showers in the upper elevations that may make it to my area. The weatherman is calling for these cold temps to stay on at least another week. BURRRRRR!!!!!

We were a "balmy" 23 degrees this morning with freezing rain (go figure - rain at 23 degrees) - not a fun drive to work but I must admit probably better than driving in the fog Meece had yesterday.
Sheila, do you frequently have winters this cold? I always think of NC as more temperate in the winter and not bone chilling cold like Michigan gets.
DH and I are lucky to go to Cancun - it's a belated 30 year anniversary trip - our actual Anniversary was in August while I was in my "chemo coma". Don't really have the extra money especially after DD#2's wedding in September and DS#2 in his first year of college this year but heck, we have to enjoy life while we can!
-
Suzette, we don't normally have this cold temps for this long. The upper elevations (Boone area - about 20 miles from me) get more cold temps than we do, they have ski areas that they have some natural snow and some man-made snow. We have almost 2 distinct weather areas in NC, the coast and low land areas are warmer but does get some cold but not as bad, the foothills and mtns get more cold and snow. The other week my area got 12 inches of snow and Charlotte (75 miles away in lower elevation) had cold rain. They usually will say that the dividing line for snow is North of I-40 when they are talking about winter weather coming in.
I am originally from OH and I do enjoy the warmer weather here but this is just a fluke cold snap.

My uncle and his wife frequently go to Sneads Ferry, NC, especially in the winter. My uncle called last night to say they came back to Maryland because it was cold in NC too. His wife is from Sneads Ferry and two of her brothers and their kids and grandkids live there.
When I heard the tempertures there and in Florida I was amazed. We have had temperatures in the teens and the weatherman said cold air was coming in with possible snow tomorrow - excuse me, what has the weather been like so far! What does he mean by that, it IS cold!
Meece - you are going to make me cry - 70 degrees.
Suzette - have a wonderful time in Cancun and while enjoying the sun and warm weather, think about those of us that are turning into popsicles.
Hope everyone stays warm.....burrrrrrrrrrr. What is this, payback for the mild summer?
-
No tears, kmccraw. The fog is back, and with it, lower temps. They don't expect it to get to 60 today. I think its supposed to get to 58. The sun came out yesterday enough to pt a fuzzy shaddow on the ground for about five minutes.
What is a mild summer? When DH and I got married, four years ago, we planned an outdoor wedding in August. Our wedding day was the first in 45 days that the temp was under 100 degrees! We had it in the evening and there was enough breeze that we couldn't keep the candles lit.
-
Sheila and Kathleen - stay warm - I hope there are no more East coast snow storms and that it warms up for you both soon. Sounds like Meece is the only one enjoying winter right now.
We're a big DITTO of yesterday - in the 20s and freezing rain. I will send warm thoughts everyone's way when we are in Cancun and if you'd like, I'll have a "fufu" drink for everyone too. Now I have 13 days to pray that the weather allows the plane to get out of Detroit and to Cancun!
-
Fufu drinks sound good. Make mine a fluffy pink daquiri.
-
The weather here is crazy, the average high for today is 50 and average low is 30. We started out again this morning at 18 and expect to get to 30 for the high. This has been going on for almost a week. They are also calling for snow starting tomorrow afternoon, where I am at it is hard to say if we will get any accumulation, I am on the boundry line between accumulation and flurries only. I have brought my fleece shrug to the office to keep my arms warm without the binding of sweater sleeves.

lvtwoqlt, I also love to quilt, but I actually like to do the quilting on my lap. It's a warm job. So I do most of it in the winter.
-
MUST BUY MORE SWEATERS! I don't quilt but I may bring a quilt or fleece blanket to put over my lap at work - good idea. Fortunately I don't see patients cause I do research and quality management nursing so as long as I don't have a meeting with anyone I can wear my jeans and warm sweaters in this weather. I can't believe NC is colder than Michigan!
A fluffy pink daquiri will be my first request when I get to our resort and I will toast you Meece.
-
I have my little red fleece blanket beside my desk. Management knows when they have it too cold because I bring it out, and it isn't subtle!
-
We are forecasted for "snow flurries" tomorrow and Friday ... last time we got "snow flurries" - well, you saw it on tv (18-20")! That's a lot of flurring.
Usually I order a frozen margurita (sp?) but I'm quite willing to try a fluffy pink daquiri.
Meece - I'll take 60!
-
I am in at the receptionist desk at my office and anytime anyone comes through the front door, I get hit with a cold blast of air (employees as well as visitors). I do have a sliding glass window that I can leave closed but to talk to anyone, I have to open the window and the cold air flows into my 'office area'.
Meece, I do hand quilting, mainly on wall hangings for my office. My boss does allow me to bring small quilt and needle craft projects in to work on when I have everything else caught up, but right now I am hand sewing a set of vintage quilt blocks and not ready to quilt. they aren't that big so I can't depend on it to keep me warm.

My sister has the big professional quilting machine, and she makes good money using it. But I like handquilting. I think the ones with the machine look like they are assembly line stuff. I have a queen sized log cabin I have been trying to hand quilt for years, for my DS. I have machine quilted a couple of sofa quilts, but I love hand quilting.
I have a quilt top that my grandmother pieced before she died of cancer several years before I was born. I found some fabric which blends well and am trying to hand quilt it. Vintage 1950s.
-
I am on Florida's East Coast, beautiful blue skies but we are freezing, going down to low 30s tonight!!!...Dog has been getting in bed with us for the last 3 evenings.....
-
Meece, the blocks I am working on are from the 40's (I think) my sil got a large box from a friend after his mother died and he didn't know what to do with it. She kept some but thought that I would like some. They are the dresiden plate block but some of the fabric wasn't color fast and the box had gotten damp before we got it and the blue color ran on quite a few blocks so the blocks have a 'vintage' look. They were also hand sewn together with crochet cotton. I am carefully hand sewing each block together with regular quilting thread and pulling out the crochet cotton thread and I am taking each block apart into 4 pieces and making it into a fan block. Each of these fans will be hand appliqued onto some white feedsack (from the 30's-40's) cut into 8.5 inch blocks to create the front of my fancy fan antique wall quilt. I even have some feed sack with the printed label still intact that I will use for my backing. I will do my fancy hand quilting in the white area above each fan.

You need to post pictures when you get it done, Sheila. It sounds wonderful. I look forward to grandbabies so I can make quilts for them.

Orlando reporting................. we are still having temps way below normal but it has been clear and sunny for the most part.......... but COLD. High today in the low sixties which is a slight improvement. Nasty weather coming during the weekend. Perfect time to escape to the Caribbean......................... southern Caribbean.
-
East Lansing, Michigan reporting . . . . . . 23 degrees with 6" of snow expected by tomorrow morning. Apparently the rush hour this afternoon will not be pleasant! 12 days and the Caribbean escape will be mine!!!
-
foothills of NC reporting, not quite as cold this morning (20 instead of teens) chance of snow this afternoon into tomorrow morning.
Hubby is heading to Wisconsin, this morning above Indianapolis and 2 inches of snow on the ground and cold.

Suzette,
Have fun! We often go to the Caribbean at least once during the Winter and usually have wonderful weather.

Thanks Pat, I'm hoping for fun and wonderful weather. This is our first year to be able to travel since our "baby" is finally out of high school and in his first year of college (our oldest child is 29 so it's been a long haul). No more having to put things off because of his schedule!
