Trying hard to lose the pounds!!!!!!!!!

Thanks Beth,
That sounds like a good substitute for Ben and Jerry. I like the idea of putting in fresh fruits. Texas blueberries have been exceptionally good this year so now I'll be able to eat more of them. -
blueberries are very high in anti oxidents or something thats really important...
the cool whip free has become my favorite snack.
With the fruit its still only about 75 calories, 3 grams of carbs....
Another crazy substitue that an RD friend of mine told me to try is and uncooked sweet potato. I know this is weird, but if you take a raw sweet potato (wash it really well) and slice it into rounds, its a great crunchy substitue for potato chips. I know, I know... not nearly as tasty as chips, but it gives you that same satisfying crunch in your mouth feeling. I happen to prefer my sweet potatoes cooked, but I thought I'd share to anyone that may want to try it.
I am really starting to see a difference in my arms in the last two weeks since adding a few new machines.
Something my trainer recommended, is that if I have a guilty pleasure food, that I absolutely love- like cheese, or yogurt, that I should eat it 30 minutes before I work out- rather than eating it closer to my bedtime.
I hope all of you ladies are doing well, and staying motivated.
speak to you soon -
A friend of mine uses stevia as a sweetner. I haven't had a chance to research it fully since I haven't been craving anything sweet, but I thought I'd share it here. Here is the first website I found on it.
Stevia info -
Hey diva's....
Still walking here...
I seem to be retaining lots of water....
Guess the hudity is doing that...
My rings are tight and I feel kind of bloated...
I did not use the humidity
as an excuse not to walk....
I have a way of coping out sometimes...
think my head is in a good place...finally...
my sugar levels are up and if I do not get them down I will be on meds for diabetes type 2...
I have to give this my best shot..If losing
weight does not bring sugar levels down to an acceptable range....meds will be the answer... I will not blame myself for not trying...
I am determined to walk
and exercise to get back in shape ...
and for over all cardio wellness...
I love coming here for re-inforcement....
For some reason writing this all down makes me even more determined to live up to my word to "get back in shape" and "lose the pounds" ...
Here's to our new svelt bodies! WE can do it...
I have a good
35 pounds to lose..
and then maybe 5 more
for wiggle room... LOL..
am aiming to reach goal by December.....
Walking the walk...cutting back....drinking more water...monitoring starch intake and waiting to drop a size or two................
Goodwill get ready...I can't wait to pack up my "BIG" clothes..........
I needed to write that down....Now lets just hope that I can live up to the test here...My plan is out...Ladies please join me.....
xoxo,
Patti -
Patti,
Since your battling the sugar levels are you coming up with ways to get all that extra fiber in? I got tired of counting fiber content. Pea soup is loaded with it so I make a pot, freeze it and cut off a chunk for lunch. I don't think there are any calories in pea soup. Ok, maybe 2 calories. -
Rosemary thank you so much...
I love pea soup..
Do you have a good recipe that you can share with me?
My MIL usually makes it for us and she is away for the summer...I love to cook but have never made my own split pea...
Any other tips you can think of ? I will have to search around for some tips...
I have a summer upper respiatory infection....I went to the doctors yesterday....
Did not walk yesterday..Trying to nurse myself back
to feeling good...One good thing...I have no appetite!
I have been busy packing and shopping for our vacation..WE leave this weekend for NJ...
I plan on walking the beach and renting a bike...
xoxo,

Patti:
Sorry you're not feeling well but please take care of yourself so you can enjoy your upcoming vacation!!! I know you'll have a wonderful time and it will refresh not only your body but your mind and spirit as well.
I've been back to exercising as well and feel good about it but still need to prod myself into going each day. Not sure if that ever changes?? Anyway, I think I've gained a couple of pounds since I got back from my daughter's and not sure how that happened either. All I know is that it is an everyday battle. However, as we've all said before, we've all been through much worse and we will conquer this too!!! I really need to be at the lowest weight I can be because on August 10th, I'm going to have my total knee replacement done and then I won't be very active other than the therapy for the knee.
Hoping all the divas are doing well . . . Janet, Lois, Eileen and Cowgirl (hope I didn't leave anyone out - didn't mean to, if I did)!! Take care and let's 'keep on, keepin' on.'
God bless,
Pat -
Patti,
My split pea soup is plain but it's tasty.
Just add garlic, onion and celery with the leaves and pepper. I put in small carrots cause I like the look.
What makes it tasty is the pepperidge farm no fat croutons on top. Really good. Since we aren't doing fats, we have to forego the necessary ham bone. Sorry.
I found you something about eating whole grain foods to keep the sugar levels in balance:
"Lower insulin levels may also contribute to the protective effects of whole grains. In many persons, the risks of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and obesity are linked to insulin resistance. Higher intakes of whole grains are associated with increased sensitivity to insulin in population studies and clinical trials. Why? Because whole grains improve insulin sensitivity by lowering the glycemic index of the diet while increasing its content of fiber, magnesium, and vitamin E.
The whole kernel of truth: as part of your healthy way of eating, whole grains can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes."

I hope this info helps. -
Pat - Sorry to hear that you will be needing knee replacement surgery. Try not to stress too much about the weight loss. It will come in time. You will need to concentrate on your knee recovery and we will be here for you.
Patti - Enjoy your vacation. I leave tomorrow to visit with my s-i-l. She is having another surgery on Tuesday. Please keep her in your prayers.
To all you wonderful divas, I just came across two recipes that I got from Weight Watchers. I must admit I've never tried them yet but they sounded so good I thought I'd share them with you:
Pasta E Fragiola:
1 16 oz. can Italian-style crushed or whole tomatoes (finely chopped)
1 19 oz. can kidney or cannelloni beans, drained and rinsed
1 cup frozen mixed vegetables
3 cups cooks pasta or 3/4 cup dry pasta
3 cups water
Place all ingredients in medium size saucepan. Simmer for 10 minutes if using cooked pasta, or until dry pasta is fully cooked. Add enough water to cover pasta.
Grande Potato Salad:
3 full cups sliced cooked potatoes
3/4 cup diced celery
1/4 cup diced red onion
3/4 cup (3 oz) Kraft fat free shredded cheddar cheese
2/3 cup Kraft Fat Free Mayonnaise
2/3 cup Far Free Sour Cream
2 tsp. dried parsley flakes
1/2 cup chunky salsa (mild, medium or hot)
1/3 cup chopped ripe olives
In a large bowl, combine potatoes, celery, and onion. Stir in cheddar cheese. In a medium bowl combine mayonnaise, sour cream, parsley flakes and salsa. Add mayonnaise mixture to potato sald. Mix well to combine. Gently stir in olives. Cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes. Gently stir again before serving.
(12 servings) approx 2 points per serving. All core if doing Core program.
Eileen - Thinking of you. Hope your trip home was good. Feel well.
Rosemary - Thanks for all the great tips. You are definitely the expert on nutrition.
Beth - We definitely should do lunch. Where on LI are you? Maybe Eileen could come too.
Hope you all have a great day. - Janet -
Okay I went back to my meeting last night. I am writing down my food, I have come to a very strange conclusion. I am not letting me hear the number on the scale. I have over 20 to loose I will know when I am pretty close, somehow I need to focus on program and forget the numbers.
Thanks for being here even when I have been completely off! -
I went to the Dr yesterday, and the numbers on the scale haven't changed at all... I don't feel discouraged, because I know I see a difference in my arms and my body overall.
I had to cancel my workout today-- have strep throat. I was so disapointed.
I guess thats a good thing though? When in my life would I ever be bummed to miss a workout?
Here's to a healthy day of eating for all of us. -
Beth my SIL did not lose for three weeks then this week she lost 3 lbs. She knew she had done well but was confused. She buckled down and upped water. Your loss will show eventually!
-
Thanks Janet,
My nutrition thing all started with a Dr. who wanted me to up my statin dosage and take another pill also. It wasn't going to happen. So he made me get into nutrition in around about way. My grocery store got my money instead of 2 drug companies. That makes me feel good. -
Thank you all for allowing a newcomer to share in your secrets. I have been most discouraged about the weight gain and the tomoxofin. I exercise a lot, but you have motivated me to continue and improve in other areas.
-
Good morning divas. Well I had a wonderful time visiting my sister-in-law and her kids. I think I gained 5 lbs. Trying hard to get back on track. I am however a little down today because she had her 3rd surgery yesterday (2nd in 6 months) for ovarian cancer. Apparently it was a VERY involved surgery and she is now in intensive care. My b-i-l sounded so drained and sad last night as they wouldn't let him see her in ICU. Please say a prayer for her. I just want to say that CANCER SUCKS!! She's only 43 and has 3 kids (15, 13 and 10). Thanks for letting me vent a little. Hope you are all well. Thanks for being there for me. - Janet
-
Hi Janet,
I'm very sorry to hear that your SIL had to go in for another surgery. This is very sad time for you and your family. She is definately in my prayers.
By now, there should be a better way of detecting ovarian cancer early on. It's hard to believe they can keep coming up with better screening tests for prostate cancer and yet no tests for early detection of ovarian cancer?
I'm glad you vented here so I could vent also. I'm praying for your SIL.
Rosemary -
Janet:
I posted on the other thread about your sister-in-law. Please know that she and your whole family are in my heart and prayers. We are all here for you!!
Blessings,
Pat -
Thinking of you and your sister in law and family! Sure her hubby is drained. And has to be able to support the kids fears also.
-
Janet, your SIL is in my thoughts.
Rosemary is right-- it's ridiculous that they haven't come up with better screening for ovarian cancer yet.
It's always something.
wanted to let you guys in on a snack. I wouldn't eat the whole box, but if you ever crave a chocolate candy bar, there is a great alternative.
Slim fast optima crispy peanut caramel snack bars. They have 120 calories, 4 grams of fat... lots of carbs (20 grams)BUT, if you want a snickers bar or you have to have something in that family, this is a much better treat.
Having strep throat last week has slowed me down in the gym. I missed two workouts last week, and today I cut my elliptical time in half. I'm hitting the weights tomorrow and Friday in hopes of getting back on track (ate fried zuchinni last night too...kill me now)
Anyway- today while i was working out, I kept replaying in my mind statistics of how excercise can lower recurrence rates. Staying motivated can be so hard, and keeping the fear of recurrence at bay is tough also. When I thought I didn't have the strength to do one more set, I reminded myself why I'm doing all of this in the first place.
love to all -
Janet so sorry she is having this whole situation. Well I went to my meeting the weigh in told me I could look eventually since I did lose. I finally am back on track, which takes all my energy writing down my food.
Hopefully it will get better soon. -
Good morning...also new to this site and I love it. I'm still in treatment. Today is #2 for AC, but I manage to walk my dog 1 mile morning and evening since this all started. Still having problems losing weight though. How much can chemo put on? Some days I feel like I could eat all day and only junk. Very hard to walk away. I also have a row machine and try to get on that a few days a week. Now that I'm back to work it's hard. But I'm not giving up!!!!!!!!
-
Tflow,
Welcome, I'm impressed with your 2 mile walks everyday. I guess I'll have to get in the pool today. No more excuses.
I found this for us and if it's true, (please be true), we can eat all day without putting on a pound:
Negative calorie foods:
http://www.healthrecipes.com/negative_calorie_foods.htm -
Rose you must be hungry! Noooo it ain't true! I am getting my exercise today, school clothes shopping with the boys and grocery shopping for my mom. There will be crowds galore, I am soooo stressed!
-
Cowgirl,
I guess it did look too good to be true. While rummaging around in that site, I did pick up an idea that may work.
He was saying to do a cardio exercise before having any breakfast. It could help in burning off more fat. What the heck, I'll try that also. -
I disagree about working out before eating breakfast. My trainer says its not good for you, because you will train your body to store calories over night because it needs them for fuel.
He also told me that its best to finish eating 30 minutes before working out, and I should never work out on an empty stomach. -
Beth,
I thought out the theory there. Working out before breakfast one should burn off stored fat. No doubt. Working out after breakfast, one should burn off stored fat also if it's within a short time after eating cause we haven't metabolized the food yet.
I'm still working on a way to burn off the excess calories over the 1400 that I'm allowed daily to just maintain my weight. I got the maintenance part down good. -
I started on the south beach diet last week.I seem to be doing well. Its a lot like the WW core plan.I needed a change so I hope this works.I do walk 4 miles 6 days a week.My friend & I meet at the mall & walk there. We talk a lot so it goes by fast
-
My favorite internet weight training guy (Marty Gallgehar) says to work out in the morning before breakfast after a little caffeine.
I usually preface the caffeine with a couple of glasses of water as well. That works well for me. If I"ve eatten then I"m sluggish and since I"m fitting this in before work I don't have endless time to eat/wait/workout.
Sometimes on a weekend when I don't get started so early I have a banana or something as well. -
Went to my weekly Weight Watchers this morning. Total of 18 lbs lost since end of May. I walk on the treadmill 30 min. per day, six days a week. Sometimes I give myself an extra day off of no walking if I've been busier than usual. I drink a lot of water. Maybe I wrote this in another thread, but I'm so thrilled that I seem to be on the right path. I should lose 100 lbs, but doc says lose 40. That was smart of him because that number doesn't scare me as much. I've been a yo-yo most of my life, but now I have to get serious! We'll see how it goes. Judy
dx April 2002 -
Hi girls!! Hope everyone is doing well!
I have 5 more pounds to lose to get to my dx with cancer weight, and 10 more pounds to get down to the smallest weight I've ever been!
So I'm getting there. Getting back to work has really pushed me into high gear.
I've lost my appetite, and I'm going to speak to my ONC about it this week-- maybe its just the stress of work, maybe the herceptin... who knows? But the weight is finally dropping off.
Hope everyone is working hard and eating healthy!!!!
