Linda, now my heart is breaking over YOUR stories!! sorry girl... May I ask about your son...what happened? I have military ties as well. Big hugs wish I could come and pick you up on Sunday!
CAN'T WAIT TO MEET YOU NOCAL girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm bringing another bc girlie with me...Mary (Mary & Kari, how cute, we rhyme!)

Short story...he injured his back the first time in Iraq. Mis-diagnosis, wrong treatments, etc., etc. He was sent back the second time and the implosion while in a Humvee from an IED caused his back issues to get a lot worse. More incorrect treatment and then major pain relievers. He had a bad reaction when he was going off of them for a test, went into convulsions and lost use of his legs for several months. He's now walking again and rides a bike as part of his physical therapy. He rides with a group of disabled Navy and Marines. It's been a long haul but he's doing well.
I hope you all have a great time this weekend. I am so jealous!
-
I'm trying to figure out a more appropriate face than a "smiley" face for a mask in the pic- anyone, ideas?
-
OK I am SO happy I can post this ... Hey Helena, check this out you wild Aussie....
The secret handshake, to answer kmmd's question:
anonymous sistah, momofboys, moi
you can address your sisters... and here the Aussie version:
HelenaJ leading her sister and SFBC friends in Oz at her cancerversary party on Halloween
or you can address yourself in the company of a BC.org sistah doing the same....
chelev and moi
and the one that started it all... Mary22 et moi

Going back for missed posts...
Leah, my young friend from RADs is also Orthodox (a version of Modern Orthodox) I wonder if there's a way to get us all together somewhere kosher? She's in Staten Island and only comes in for TX at this point.
-
lbrewer- white frikin button mushrooms? well actually sorta by accident I am eating a lot more veggies so it seems I am going to get some of the best anti SFBC ones in there... oh and
j414- turns out the broccosprouts I bought at Whole Foods ARE the John Hopkins ones
Just didn't squint to read the label carefully
Helena- You are NOT into Chocolate? Really? Not even dark chocolate?
kari- that's why I said its all different depending on who you go to. You didn't get the cool sleep? Yes, so much heartbreaking stuff going on. I can't bear it. I don't know what to make of your Vit D scoring, but going down one point doesn't seem to be that big a deal- mine is at 30, and my ONC said that's fine? Course you are in Cali and have lots of sunshine year round, or do you? Maybe your level varies and taking the supplement helped you, maybe you would have been much lower without it? I dunno, just guessing. ONC will probably tell you more. Good Luck with the CYP2D6 results... and you know... let us know!
Oh I am GLAD I didn't open kari's link before I saw kmmd's warning!!!!! I ain't gonna open dat thing!!!! Thank you kmmd! Seriously, everyone, please do warn us if a link is going to make us cry!
on to page 10...

carollyn- I feel for ya - and I really do. The kid got sick last week and gave it to me and it SUCKED. Even though it was just a runny nose and soreish throat and general YUCK feeling, nothing dramatic, it still knocked me down for a couple days.
oh and ... period's over and and so, it seems are my HF.
I am more stiff than I recall being, but I can push through that
linda- i'm at a loss for words and can only send major hugs to you and your son.
OK I am caught up!!!! (I think)
-
Helena I hear you on the salt!!! Yummy!!!
-
I was so stunned at the part about Helena not liking chocolate I missed the salt part. Well yeah, i love salt, but if i have to give up one of them, salt will GO!
-
Well I am with her-- skip the chocolate is fine with me : >
-
You know I go to those great big delicatessan type places and just drool over all the different dips, cheese, olives - maybe that is why I love parties so much - (love the new smile thingy Inspie). Stick with me baby. :>
Sooo ... had two months of no rain and all of a sudden it has been bucketing down and we have had thunder and lightening the past two nites and haven't got my usual 8 hours + sleep, ... had the cat, dog, DH and smallest DD in bed the other nite. sigh... maybe I should try a hot chocolate b4 bed. HA! And here I am back on the boards because I am too lethargic to attempt housework. Great to see this thread has taken off..like how.
No .. don't like dark chocolate Rachel and that mask is a little freaky - remember "Chuckie". But then the quality of my snap is pretty bad so maybe it is just that - DH must have had one too many when he took my photo - he managed to cut my foobs off (sorry horrible pun not intended) and this was the best of a bad bunch.
Will try to stay away but no promises .......................
see I'm back .. edited to add loved the photo of Babs and her dress...he he he
-
Rachel, thank you for the invite.
So this is where all the smart, funny women are! I have spent the last hour reading some of your posts, and may I say thank you! A thread where women laugh, swear and support each other is where I want to be.
I thought I would introduce myself: 46, married 24 years, 2 daughters (20-17), I live in Montreal, and I swear like a sailor. The swearing part is a major problem. I am an English prof and I have children. I control my swearing around them, BUT, if I stub a toe, spill my coffee, can't get the A/V equipment to work in my class, some words slip out. I have more control in class, but at home......not so much. It drives my DH crazy. The result is that my daughters swear (I am a good mother, honestly).
I started Tamox a week ago. I got the prescription in September. I was scared to take it. Then, I decided to put my big-girl panties on (unfortunately, both figuratively and literally), and take the pill. So far, so good. I have nausea (better since I started taking it at night with milk), headaches (getting better), insomnia, and fatigue.
Mary
Edited: I forgot to write my real name, and I decided to remove the swear words. I figure you should get to know me before I start swearing.
-
Once you get PFC (past F...ing chemo) a swear word or two is fine with me... !! LOVE the pics. At the mammo waiting room, in our gorgeous open in the front gowns, I introduced 6 gals to the handshake. On the way out a couple did it with all their clothes on. I also taught it to my breast surgeon, who almost fell off the chair laughing.
I have a fear that men with prostrate cancer will develop a "similar" handshake.... Am I bad???
-
Lefty--Men seem to always have their hands on themselves anyway, it would be hard to tell who is really in the "club." Speaking of which, my former husband was diagnosed at 48 with prostate cancer, 11 years ago, and I was diagnosed with bc last year when I was 48, the genetic counselor told me our son needs to start having his prostate checked at 30!!!!!!! I hope his dad and I will give him more than a life of worry.
Love the pictures!

So Helena QOTD- ya building an ark? I can totally see that. Your backyard looks like a good place to build an ark. Hey I KNOW the smiley face looks like crap- I just was blanking on the right image. Help? I can put something else there but meanwhile- doncha love our handshake? Oh and btw that day I had just come from my first follow up mammo and ONC appts day, and I was completely hammered on Xanax and giddy with joy from it all going well. And with my BC org pals to celebrate and them getting their growing in hair all pretty colored... Oh I love it, we're corrupting you with thoughts of hot chocolate... yess... all part of my evil plan... muahahahaha... and I am sure glad to see you here (selfish of me).
Mary number 2 (we have a Mary) oh no, an English prof... I am a writer who knows nothing of grammar... I am in trouble!
Well no, actually, I will just pick your brain ... yeah! Well I am afraid I'd chase off the nicer people on this thread if I swore like I actually wanted to... fuckity fuck fuck fuck
But as we were saying before, we kinda like to reserve the swear words for the stuff to do with cancer, 'cause if we don't then haven't got any words left to express the cancer stuff. OK back to the Tamox... 44 and very premenopausal, no chemo, right? So you had regular periods? What day of your cycle did you start Tamox? I have a theory- no studies or even empirical data to support it, but since I am highly suggestible I think it's working for me. From what I have read here I think it's fair to say its unusual to have SEs within a week of taking Tamox (anyone?). Oh and I finished RADs in May and didn't start Tamox until September, but that was my plan, along with my ONC. During the interim I kept a list of "SE"s I was having- BEFORE Tamox. Really helps me now to sort out what might be Tamox and what might not. Oh and here's the spiel about Tamox SEs (everyone else can skip this)
Tamox was not designed to fight breast cancer, it was a bone drug that oops, accidentally happened to reduce breast cancer. When they did the big clinical trial of 13K women, half on Tamox and half on placebo, some startling things happened, but for our purposes now 2 big ones:
1- The women on Tamoxifen were doing so much better against recurrence they had to call the study off early, because it wasn't fair to the women who were on placebo
2- Yes, the women on Tamoxifen reported an increase in SEs... but here's the fun part... SO DID THE WOMEN ON PLACEBO. Except for the hot flashes, those are definitely reported more often on Tamoxifen AND more hot flashes are correlated to even lower recurrence rates.
Here's the study:
http://www.cancer.gov/clinicaltrials/digestpage/BCPT
and here's another study, with only a couple hundred women, but interesting results- same as the big study in terms of SEs:

Oh and while I am at it, check out this awesome video from Sloan Kettering about Breast Cancer

and this wonderful link to help figure out which sites are ca ca

OMG Nancy you completely crack me up!!!!! You're going to cause a revolution at the hospital!
KEW- and I thought no one could top that ... yeah you are right!!! Oh and you are giving your son everything he needs to have a long healthy life.
One more thing since I am repeating a lot of my golden oldies... I once here figured out how our Stages compared to celebrities... If you are Stage II and did chemo, you have the Melissa Etheridge Stage... oh and on that note, here's some required reading for this thread...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_j3TDhc8vY
NO KLEENEX REQUIRED!!!!

Kew - my sister was diagnosed at 35 and although I am not BRCA1 or 2 positive both my gorgeous daughters have to start screening at 30 (5 years b4 known family member)....not sure how old your son is but my DDs are 7 and 10 ... there will be a cure b4 then....... got to be. hugs.

-
i'm up, its not so late- like midnight
-
maybe lbrewer could make a madmen avatar and I could use that?
or I should blur it like on court tv?
but there's a funny appropriate image... like a cartoon character or celebrity or symbol...
-
hey I was going to say pixellate (sp!) but couldn't spell it ...haha
midnite in New York... the city that never sleeps I guess. :> don't ya just love the new smiley sideways thingy.
Plus I know this is so boring for all the regulars but G_d damn that John Mayer is pretty spunky?
-
Who is John Mayer?
-
OK, Googled John Mayer and he's a decent musician. But how does he compare to this:
-
Sorry that was so large.... well actually, no, I am not!
Hugh Jackman. OK?
-
-
ha ha ha hahahaaa....hahahahahahahahahahhhh
and hahahahah
-
Eh, John Mayer is cute. But if you were wearing just a towel and were standing in the hall between a bedroom with hugh jackman waiting in one and john mayer waiting in the other, which room are you going to?
-
far out brussel sprout come back to visit bco and get questions like this ........mmmmmm....john mayer cos I love accents.....
-
what accent has john mayer got? american?
-
Well he's not Australian so he has an accent to me.. well there's American or Newyorkan.. he lives in Soho (can't believe I am googling this stuff .. its like researching SFBC). And how come my John is so tinsy and your Hugh (well really MY Hugh) is so HUGHE.
-
nyah nyah nyah mine's bigger than yours :P
well we're tied on accents, or maybe I am ahead because Hugh is an Aussie like you, so that's an accent for me, plus when he plays in XMen he speaks like a good ol' American.
-
hrrmmph...hey you I PM'd you
..but this battle is not over :P
