Hi Lora..it is really hard to say things one way or the other

until the final biopsy is done...

but generally if there is lymph node involvement

there is more to be done than just to remove them...but

we are NOT doctors or medical people ...just fellow

    breast cancer friends...

I personally had two opinions from the surgery, radiation and oncology doctors

getting the treatment plan in place takes time and

sometimes it is very frustrating..but soon the path will be clearer..

Hugs to you and your Mom..

Lora, you asked if someone does a bilat mast, is that the end of their worries. The answer is no.

The surgical choice your mom makes has no bearing on whether the cancer will or will not spread beyond the breast and to the organs. Most women with bc don't have a distant recurrence of their tumor, but the ones who do develop mets (and some of them are node negative), did not become Stage IV b/c they had a lumpecomy or single masectomy up front.

Also, it's impossible to remove all the breast tissue with a mastectomy, so there is a small (1-5%) chance of local recurrence after mast.

I'm not trying to sway your mom's surgical decision--I just want to make sure you have all the facts at hand in making the decision. It's a very personal choice, and unless the decision of mastectomy vs lumpectomy is dictated medically (surgeon can't get clean margins, tumor is multi-focal, etc), the surgical choice comes down to what the patient is comfortable doing. Same thing with single mastectomy vs. double mastectomy--the patient has to do what is right for her.

You also asked if there are positive nodes, is chemo necessary if the nodes are removed. Most of the time, yes. I had chemo with negative nodes due to my age and the biology and size of the tumor. There are a lot of factors that play into the chemo decision, and until you have a complete picture of the biology of your mom's tumor, it's hard to say what her adjuvant treatment will be.

Lora - a lot depends on the path report. Without that info, you can't possibly make an informed decision.

Ok guys - I can't do next weekend either but can do any other.

I'm up for the 24-25th weekend. Maybe I'll have my sutures and staples out then - whoo-hoooo! I already ditched my helmet, thank God, with my neurosurgeon's blessings.

I can do the 25th but not the 24th. I may end up having to work the 25th so don't plan around me.

So it sounds like we should do the 25th.

What's the concensus on ethnic food, i.e. Mexican, Chinese?  I know a good Chinese restaurant in Penasquitos.

I like Japanese food. And 'Asian Fusion' (that sounds so pretentious). I like some Chinese food - what is the name of the one you like in Penasquitos? Mexican food does not agree with me too much, so I often end up with 'honky' Mex food like a tostada or a quesadilla.

    Lisa,

The restaurant is Yenchim Garden Restaurant.  It's in the Von's shopping center on Black Mountain Road

A group of us from work go there every so often.  And on top of that, the owner brings his car to our auto repair shop (I own with my husband).  I go there with my family frequently.

I can only do the 24th - but if I'm the only one, I'll just catch you all in November.  Chinese sounds good to me - and nice to know of a good one in PQ.  (Just returned from a wonderful week in New England, leaf peeping and totally enjoying the feeling of fall, the smells, the clear air, the chance to wear sweaters and coats!  If someone could remind me how to post photos, I'd put up a few.)

Edited to add:  I have a Mac - and DH told me picassa doesn't integrate too well with Mac. GuitarGirl, do you have an opinion??

Hi Brahna, I am 22 years out and still am completely numb under the arm down to about half way to the elbow.  AND to top off the whole thing, my two last fingers (ring and little) are tingly.

Shoot, breast cancer, the gift that keeps on giving!

Will see you all on the 25th, where and when?

    Love, Shirl

    Shirl, Thanks for the encouragement.

If we knew then what we know now, would we do it the same way?  Innocent

Lunch on Sunday is at Yenchim Garden Restaurant in Penasquitos - in the Von's shopping center on Black Mountain Rd.  We haven't said what time but 12 sounds good to me.

    Hello!

I'd like to join you this month, but it may not happen.  November is looking better, especially after the 22nd.  I'll know more later in the week.  Sorry to be such a flake.  I enjoyed your company so much in August and would love to do it again.

    I will be # 6, God willing.

BMD - you've just got to make it! Set the showings for after 2pm, you can say your schedule is so packed you couldn't possibly show a property before 2 or2:30 (or draw up a contract, submit an offer etc).

Lilyj - hope you, too, can make it after your week shapes up.

Adnerb and sheridangirl - we'd love to see you again. Well again for Brenda S.but sheridangirl got involved in some surgery last month I suspect. You can both show us your new Ta-Ta's! Or your budding ta-ta's as the case may be.

nash - I'm looking forward  to your return to us, Why not make it this month and surprise us?!? You won't recognize me, but I'll introduce myself.

SoCal - yes, please on the ride. I think my scooter will fit in your back seat, or at least the cavernous trunk space. It collapses smaller than a golf bag!

I will be at your house about 11:30 so we can

get you and the scooter in the car..how does that sound??
