OOO arnie those are good!  I had forgot about some of them.  Especially Susan Ashton!  Doesn't she sing "Beauty for Ashes"?

Patoo you are right about the WOW series.  It is a great way to add to collections!

Madisa is becoming one of my favorites that I forgot to mention.  I also have Sandy Patti, I sing a lot of her songs for specials, as well as Christy Starling, Twila Paris, and Point of Grace.  I have seen Point of Grace in concert too.  They toured with 4-Him a couple of years ago.  I also have Crystal Lewis, Kim Boyce, Ray Boltz (LOVE "The Altar, The Hammer, The Nails"!!), Zoe Girl, Shine, and Nikki Leonti, and The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir in my cd collection.

We have probably overwhelmed you Elaine!  Cool

    Now let's continue with David:

    David & Goliath

The Philistines were gathering for war against Israel.  Goliath comes onto the scene and declares that if one man could kill him, then the Philistines would surrender and be their servants.  Goliath was 9 feet, 9 inches tall.

Goliath taunts Israel for 40 days (40 represents a time of trials/tribulation).  Meanwhile David's brothers were with the army and David was tending to the sheep.  Jesse sends David w/ food to check on his brothers.  David finds Israel in battle with the Philistines, but when Goliath would approach, Israel would retreat (a.k.a. run away chickens).  David is perplexed by this.  Why would God's army retreat?  The men tell David of Goliath's "proposal" (threat) and about the reward Saul has offered to the man who could kill Goliath-(no more taxes and his daughter for marriage).

David chastises the men for retreating like little chickens reminding them that with God, there IS no fear.

So David tells Saul he will fight Goliath.  Well David is kinda small......David is very small and Saul points this fact out, so to speak......David defends his size by telling of how he single handedly fought and killed lion and bear if so needed to protect the sheep.  But then David says to Saul "The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." (17: 37)

So, Saul suits David up in his own armor, but again, David is so small that the armor swallows him up!  He cant walk in it.  Now I get a visual here of little David and everyone snickering when  they cant even see Davids eyes in the helmet.

David still isn't afraid, he just takes off the armor.  He knew he had the armor of God as his shield.  David takes 5 stones and the number 5 in the bible represents God's grace.  It only took 1 stone and 1 single shot to bring down the giant.  The number 1 represents unity, and David certainly had unity with God!

David chastises Goliath:  "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin.  But I come in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.  This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand and I will strike you and take your head from you."

David is confident, no fear, no doubt.  I don't think he hesitated, was nervous, or "hoped" he was right.  I believe that David was just as confident that he would defeat Goliath as we are that we will eat every day, or brush our teeth, etc.  What I would give to have that same confidence sometimes!

I have actually been practicing this.  The other night, when Mark was out of town, something woke me up in the middle of the night.  I kept hearing "noises".  You know, the kind of noises one NEVER hears when their husband is home......Our alarm was on but my mind starting thinking "maybe they cut the phone wires..."  Then all of a saddened I thought "Wait a minute!!!!!  What am I afraid of?  I have prayed for God to drape His veil of protection over me and my family!  He will absolutely honor that prayer and NO EVIL can penetrate His veil!"  So I smiled rather smugly and drifted back off to sleep with a grin on my face.

Now I gotta do this same thought process with my business, and cancer, and anything else I tend to fear or worry about.

moodyk13 - I appreciate your thoughts! And the challenge to "do this same process"! It is a challenge and one we need His help with. We can't do things with our own strength, but so often try to take the reins back and run our own lives! Then we wonder why we worry, etc!

Hope Olivia continues to do well.

Anyone heard of the Heritage Singers? They are a Seventh Day Adventist singing group that formed over 35 years ago. We really appreciate their testimony and Christian music and attend any concert in our area. One of their cd's is "Someone Cares" - especially comforting during this journey!

Moodyk13 - thanks for today's study.  It's caused me to reflect because I wonder if I would have "smiled rather smugly and drifted back off to sleep with a grin on my face".   I probably would have fallen short again because even though I would have thought I gave it to God, before I fell back to sleep I might have peeped out my bedroom door to see if I detected anything.  Oh well, still growing!

    Thanks.

So I have this same thread over on my other breast cancer forum and one of the ladies there pointed out something that I STILL missed in this section!

God had been preparing David for victory over Goliath by sending a lion and a bear first!  We have to conquer smaller battles in order to prepare ourselves for a war.  David's confidence and faith was already established before facing "the giant".

I suppose our cancer battle is just God strengthening our confidence and faith for bigger battles......It has certainly made a HUGE difference in my confidence that God will continue to use me to do His work.

Now with regards to my story....Patoo, this was only one situation where I was able to apply some of these lessons God is teaching us........I can't say that the next time will be as successful!  It will take much practice and failure to get better at it.

Karen- although I know that there is probably one intended or general lesson in each of these lessons, I believe that each one may have a special meaning/message for each person. Thats what I love about these---the individual lessons learned and shared.

Karen, I love the way you make my thoughts do a 180.

You said "I suppose our cancer battle is just God strengthening our confidence and faith for bigger battles" - I would have thought of it as previous battles preparing us for this cancer battle but I do believe your way is probably more the case.  Each trial does prepare us for the next and we are to move forward, not turn and look back.

Moody... thank you for your posts... I have always had a special place in my heart for David, he being a man after God's own heart...

I don't know if posted this before so excuse me if I'm being redundant!   Many years ago during a personal bible study, I came across these verses.

Be joyful always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. ASB  1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I know through my fellowship with other christians that many would state they didn't know what the will of God was for any particular situation...  Well these verses spoke to me and they state what the will of God is for us through Christ Jesus.  Right then I memorized this verse and practised it... yes, I think faith takes practise!   Over the years I have tried to find my complete joy in the Lord, I pray throughout the day, give thanks in all circumstances.  When the surgeon popped his head in the door to say it was cancer, I looked at my husband and sister whose eyes were brimming with tears and I said, "Praise you Father".  I had promised Him I would praise Him either way.  I think it is easy to praise our Father during good times, but it must be even sweeter to His ears to hear us praise Him when the going gets tough.   To me, personally, this is the practising of my faith... to trust Him fully and in all circumstances, because He sees father along than I do.

Ok...didn't mean to go on so long...but you ladies inspire me!!!  God Bless, and hope you have a wonderful weekend.      ((((((((((hugs)))))))))) janet

What a wonderful verse. I know that I am thankful in good times, my journey with cancer has taught me to be thankful in the bad times. Because I get through the bad times because of my faith. because of the strength and encouragement I draw from God, because of the people he puts in my life to help me along whether its family, friends, new friends, doctors, nurses, techs, technology, someone who happens to know of (fill in the blank). I know I will learn from each experience and will be helped because of it or will help someone else because of it.

I love this thread..always thinking, pondering, questioning & learning. Growing. Yes, I also think faith takes practice--lots and lots of practice. Its also a use it or lose it sort of thing.

    Love to all

arnie, what a PERFECT verse and perfect post!  You are absolutley right!  The will of our God in EVERY situation is to give Him praise!  That little light bulb came on when I read your post.  Thanks so much for sharing it.    I had a "wow, I coulda had a V-8" moment!  LOL

I know the book "Facing your Giants" has been mentioned here before, but I don't know if ay of you have seen the movie "Facing the Giants".  If you haven't I encourage you to rent it.  The acting is amateur, but the story line is fabulous!  It is a true story about a high school here in Georgia and it is so incredibly motivating.  I don't want to say much case you havent seen it, but plan too.

Elaine, you are right about "use it or lose it"!  never thought of it like that before, but sure does sum it up!

Patoo, There is no telling how many people in the medical community we have all been witnesses too.  One glorious day, God will show us why we were put through this trial, and I believe that we will be dumbfounded by those who came to know Christ that we played a part in, even if only a tiny roll!

    Estepp, Love you girl!

I saw a quote once some thing like: being optomistic after you have everything you need (or want) doesn't count.

I sort of think of faith that way, having faith only in the good times or only in the the bad times is not quite the same as having faith ALL the time.

Elaine you are so right!  It is EASY to be optimistic when things are going our way and it is easy to praise God when things are good.  We MUST praise daily  no matter what!

This reminds me of something a little boy said one time.  He was about 3 years old and I used to baby sit him.  His mom had run over their dog and they were rushing him to the vet.  Ben was crying and his mom said to him to pray. So Ben, bowed his little head and said "Dear God, thank You for this miserable day."  !!!!  The dog lived and Ben is now a minister in the methodist church Laughing

    David & Jonathan

David continues to serve Saul with music and leading the armies.  The Bible says that David "behaved wisely". (1 Sam 18:5)  Everyone knew David and everyone accepted him as a leader.

David and Saul's son Jonathan formed a bond like no other bond.  The bible says that Jonathan "was knit to the soul" of David and "loved him as his own soul" (1 Sam 18: 1 & 3)  This will play a HUGE role in the life of David and all of Israel.

The  problems start to arise when Saul gets jealous and feels threatened by David.  The women cheer that "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands."  So Saul sets out to kill David.  This story begins in chapter 18:6.

Saul then begins to fear David because it is so evident to him the God is with David.  So Saul "thinks" that if he sends David out against the Philistines and dies, his own hands would be clean.......what a big dummy....

In the meantime, Saul offers his daughter Michal to David to be his wife, but still wants him dead.  The problem is, Saul was actually fighting God and not David, but he is too blinded by envy and fear to see this.  Every time Saul sends David into war the bible says "David behaved more wisely than all the servants of Saul, so that his name became highly esteemed."   (1 Sam 18:30)

All that Saul managed to do was to play a role in God's plan for David to build up Israel's confidence in David to be the next king.  And though the bible doesn't say this, I believe that with every battle David won, his confidence to lead Israel had to be strengthened.

The battles that David fought had to be terrifying sometimes, even though the bible doesn't go into detail.  It could be that God wanted to relate to us that any battle we face is really "no big deal" as long as we are in God's army.  Or perhaps, these battles were "no big deal" to David because he knew God was his shield and sword.  Either way, I want that same attitude!

I think it also shows how some things are going to happen one way or another, that there may be something we are meant to do. The oportunities will keep popping up until we get the hint!

Karen...I love the Story of Ben Smile. I don't know if I praise everyday, but I do have faith that everything will work out (even in the darkest of days), I pray for healing the wrongs and hurts, I pray thanks for the good days. And I know it will all work out in the end.

    Saul's next plan for David's demise  (1Sam 18:20 - 30)

Saul offers his daughter Michal, to be David's wife, for a very specific reason.  Back in the OT days, the bridegroom had to pay a price to the bride's father to compensate him for the loss of his daughter's help around the house.

Saul's "price" for his daughter specifically to David is foreskins from the Philistines.  Now Saul tries to play this off as merely having David "take vengeance on the king's enemies."  However, Saul's true intentions were for David to be killed by them instead.

Guess what?  Our God is WAY bigger than any Philistine.  Not only does David slay the required 100 and collect their foreskins (yuck), he goes above and beyond by killing an additional 100.  So David brings Saul 200 foreskins of the Philistines!  This really crawls Saul's behind because now the Israelites hold David to even a higher than before!

This story is a perfect example for all of us.  No matter the size of the task, or how seemingly impossible it may be, if we continue to seek God's will, we can conquer it 2 fold!

MoodyK13, why do you think David brought back 200 when only 100 were required?  Was he perhaps a little cocky or arrogant and telling Saul 'in yer face!'?  I just wonder.  I've always had a problem with David.  It's hard to explain but perhaps it because when I think of David I see myself continuing to sin while professing to be after God's heart.

Patoo, here are the reference scriptures regarding the 100 foreskins:

1 Sam 18: 25 25 "And Saul said, say this to David, 'The king does not desire any dowry, but a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to be avenged of the king's enemies. But Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines."

The term "dowry" was used to refer to a gift or sum of money.

And here is the scripture about the 200 foreskins and why David did this:

1 Sam 18:27-28  "Wherefore David arose and went, he and his men, and slew of the Philistines two hundred men; and David brought their foreskins, and they gave them in full tale to the king, that he might be the king's son-in-law. And Saul gave him Michal his daughter to wife."

28 "And Saul saw and knew that the LORD was with David, and that Michal Saul's daughter loved him."

David's ability to slay ANY Philistine by himself was futile.  Only with God could David have victory.  If David brings back 100 foreskins, it probably wouldn't have been too much of a surprise, as Saul already knows God is with David.  He merely fulfills the request, but by bringing back 200, twice the requested amount, shows that God is even BIGGER than Saul can possibly imagine.  Plus it shows David's committment to always give Saul more than asked of, a sign of loyalty.

Regarding David continuing to sin against God......here is my personal feeling for why David is such an important part of the Bible:  David seeks God's heart and truly wants to do God's will, but the desires of the flesh can be so very strong, that they can be very difficult to fight.  I believe God is showing us that we are going to succumb to sin, but as long as we truly repent and so desire NOT to sin, He will continue ti forgive us.

Remember, Jesus is the ONLY man to ever walk on this earth completely sinless.  We cannot do that because we are sinners.  Sinners who are saved by the blood of Jesus, but until we receive our perfect Heavenly bodies, we will continue to sin.

Also remember that in God's eyes, sin is sin.  One sin doesnt "trump" another.  In God's eyes, it is just as sinful to envy someone as it is to murder someone.  Now, of course, in our eyes, there is no comparison, but that is why God is God and we are not.

David is the perfect example of how, even when totally surrender to God, we are not perfect and we will sin, but God is a forgiving God, He will NEVER leave us ir forsake us......provided we REPENT and SEEK Him.

We are going to be getting deep into David's life and you will see how he accepts his "punishment" for his sins because he is a man of God.  I believe that when we have finished studying David's life, you will see him in a new light.

I was feeling really low--then I noticed this thread.  I was seeking inspiration, but I feel the content is too busy.  Remember "A double-minded man is unstable in all ways"

How can we make this thread more concise and productive without controversy?

What about healing and peace?  That's what I need.

Gloria Copeland's "Healing Scriptures" are really beneficial.

Hi Kay-Kay - welcome.  Please visit often.

I'm not sure what you mean by the content is too busy as we are trying to do various studies and at this time hope to focus on David.

You might also like the 'power of prayer' thread and there's another, I forget exactly the title but it also has posts of books that are Christian inspired.  I'll try and find it later (off to Bible Study at my church right now) and post the link.

Praying for you to feel God's outstretched hand of comfort which will give you the peace that only He can give.
