I have a question for you makeup mavens...can anyone recommend a good body makeup? Now that it's summer and I'm wearing low-cut tops, I'd like something to smooth out the look of the skin on my chest and to cover up the freckles and the little blue rads tattoos. I'd like it to be fairly waterproof too and not melt off on a hot day. Any suggestions?

No idea on the makeup, Marin, but I had my rads tats lasered off years ago.

OK...ladies, I need help choosing a self tanner.  I usually use Lavera sunless tanner but they are out of stock for a few weeks and by then summer will be over.  Now I've gooled self tanners and have gotten mixed opinions about the same product.  Any input from experience?  Please..... :o)

Well, I am very fair and most of them turn me a sickly shade of yellow.  And, they all smell to greater or lesser extent.  Right now I'm using Clarins gel.  It's okay but I think it smells worse then some drugstore brands.

My solution is to try to get some sun on my legs once summer comes (HA! The heat is on this morning and it's raining again.) and continue to use sunblock on my face but use a bit of bronzer on top.

Dotti, maybe I should try the Lancome???  It doesn't turn blue-white legs yellow?

    Abba-

your in Mass...right?  I'm in CT and the weather has been so rainy and cold!  Just got back on Saturday night from vacationing at the Outerbanks where it was sunny and in the mid 80's everyday Cool...I wish that weather would have followed back up to the northeast ;o(.

Dotti- Landcome is at Macy's right?

Anyone have experience with Jergens Healthy Glow?  I picked some up at CVS yesterday but am nervous about trying it.... for fear of turning orange instead of brown.

Liz - whereabouts in the Outer Banks did you go? We go to Ocracoke Island, honeymooned there in 2003 and had been going back every year. Although this year with the economy, we found a small condo in N. Myrtle Beach (Cherry Grove) instead - right before the rates go up.

I would have recommended Loreal Sublime self tanner, but they revamped the formula so that is now "quick drying" --not a good thing. If you don't rub the lotion in very very quicky, the result is blotches here and there. Also, the new formula appears to be more orangy than the old.

Liz, yup, MA.  Central.  Weather the pits.  Just took a nap with the cat and am having a cup of tea before I get back to work.  Hello to CT.

I cannot even imagine sunshine anymore.  Was yesterday sunny?  Oh, wait.  I must have been hallucinating.  Bah.

I had picked up a trial size of the Jergens for my dd, she says it has been good and went to get a full size.

We had a little sun yesterday morning but rain again over night and all day today, projected thru the weekend. blah

    Raye-

we started going to the Outerbanks in 2005 after someone I used to work with recommended it so I researced the areas and during our 1st visit we fell in love with the beaches and the surroundings there.  We also drive up to Carova the 4X4 beach where the horses roam freely, have you ever been there?  Everything is just so perfect there Kiss.  We have visited many beach areas such as Hawaii (3 Islands), Florida(many parts), Virginia beach, Maine beaches(have cold water Surprised!) and many more along with some Canadian beaches but for us nothing compares.  We have always stayed in Duck. This year I found a great deal on the Outerbanks Craigslist with someone looking to rent out their timeshare.  I was a little nervous at 1st but then made some calls and everything the owners told me checked out so I paid for the condo through Paypal which turned out to be perfect and just a few steps from the beach.   As far as the rates, they definitely went up this year and many places are not rented because of the economy and the property owners' don't want to negotiate either.

Now back to the topic (for a minute there... I was dreaming of being back at OBX...I wish Laughing

I heard some good & bad reviews about the Loreal Sublime, with the quick drying, may be mixing it with body lotion would help but with it turning orange...that won't help. I love my Lavera and can't believe that the company is out of stock for a few weeks...by then summer will be over!

Abba, so you took a "catnap" LOL....don't blame you.  I just brewed some coffee which is not good for my gastritis but I need it bad.  Actually, I need to go back to the OuterbanksCool, that would definitely wake me up.

CT was supposed to have sunshine yesterday but it was overcast and cool instead. I'm assuming MA was the same so you much be hallucinating Surprised.  My 7 year old keeps asking me when will it be warm enough to open up our pool and I tell him that right now it looks like never.  This weather is crazy, it's 62 degress and raining....YUK!!!!

Thanks EWB.  I guess I'll try the Jergens I bought, after all it was only around $6 after I used a coupon.  The worst...I'll be scrubbing it off along with the tan I have left...right.....Wink

need some ideas--I am finding that masacra is bothering my eyes/lashes. they become rather itchy. Trying to come up with a brand or different technique for lashes to frame my eyes. Would it work to use liner alone without mascara? Finally got in the routine of basic makeup, love the difference it makes but the itchy stuff is not so good. Any ideas welcomed!!!

I was happy with the Jergens, but you really have to wipe/wash excess off well! I had residue around my rings I didn't realize....

ewb, is your mascara old?  Over 6 months?  It may be contaminated and causing irritation.  Try a new tube.

Otherwise, you could have your lashes professionally tinted and lose the mascara.  That, with eyeliner, would look okay.   Your lashes may not look as long but at least they will be colored if they are naturally light.

    Okay, back to work.

    EWB-

some mascara makes my eyes itchy too.  For me, I think it's the wax so I switched to water proof mascara from AVON called "wash off".  I've been using it for over a year and mainly apply it towards the tips of my lases and so far so good.

Liz, I haven't been to the OBX in about 16 yrs but it is a lovely area. When I went with my son, we stayed in the Kitty Hawk area and drove to Hattaras one day with a picnic, that was before they moved the lighthouse and my son raced to the top of Hattaras lighthouse. Even though I live in NC it is about an 8 hr drive for me to go to Hattaras.

don't have any tips on tan in a bottle or mascara, just wanted to put in another plug for the OBX as a beautiful place to vacation.

    Sheila-

that's a long ride.  With no traffic and only a short stop it takes us approx 10-11 hours from CT.

    Barbe-

yes, they did move the Hateras light house approx 2,500' in one piece due to the shore being washed out because of all the hurricanes that hit Cape Hateras. They moved the light house to a safer location to save it. The Outerbanks has a few light houses that you can tour.

Liz it is a long ride but I live towards the western end of the state.

Barbe, check out the wiki site about the Cape Hattaras lighthouse. It gives some details about this historic light and there are a couple of pictures of the lighthouse (close to the bottom of the page) up on the tracks while they moved it in 1999. And moving it was controversial at the time. Some people didn't want to see it moved, others thought it would crack. When we were there they had large sand bags and wooden pilings on and just off the shore close to it to try and keep the sand from washing away. I knew it was listed as the tallest lighthouse in America but I forgot that it was 12 stories high and my son ran up the steps. I made him wait on each landing while I caught up with him. He had a camera (disposable) and took pictures out of each window while he waited It is interesting looking at his photos. I think he was about 9 at the time and he just turned 24. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Hatteras_Lighthouse

Liz - I've never been to that area of the Outer Banks, but have heard about the 4X4 beach - sounds marvelous. The first year we stayed in Kill Devil Hills, but took a drive down to Hatteras and just loved it. That led to us staying on Ocracoke for the next six years.  We visited the Hatteras Lighthouse after they had moved it. Talk about a workout, lots of steps, but well worth it once you arrive at the top - what a view.

Today in Myrtle Beach it is going to be 94 and sunny. Whoo! Might as well enjoy - reports from home are the same as you girls in New England have been writing about - rain rain and more rain...heading home tomorrow with a tan.  Smile

Elaine - I am sorry - on and on about OBX I go and not a word about mascara!

Yes, some eyeliner on your top lids would bring out your eyes and give the illusion of darkened lashes. I did that when I had no lashes during chemo. Also, a girlfriend of mine hates mascara, but uses the eyelash curler on her lashes to bring them up and make them more prominent.

Have you tried a hypoallergenic mascara? Isn't Almay hypoallergenic? Just a thought.

May be we should start a vacation thread to share our vacation experiences and ratings of the different places we've visited....what do you ladies think???

Has anyone else tried just using a lash curler(sp?)  in place of mascara?  I've been thinking of doing that along with a little eye liner just for the summer.  And may be just for special outings do mascara.

Liz, that's a great idea.  Why don't you do it?

I don't use eyelash curlers so cannot pass judgement.  The few times I tried to use one, I nearly poked my eye out!!! LOL  Anyway, my lashes don't need curling but they do need color as they are not dark enough to stand out on their own.  I definitely  need mascara or the tinting.  I used to have that done; it cost $25.00 and lasted about a month.  I did find, though, that mascara made my lashes nicer because it also lengthens them.

I'm in RI and the weather SUCKS!  I work in a school for behavior disordered children and boy are they miserable.  Out of control (more than ever) and cranky.  I am cranky myself LOL, I don't think we'll see much sun this summer.  It is supposed to be bad until at least next Thursday Cry

Anyway, about the subject of eyelash curlers.  My eyelashes and brows have not come back very thick, so I pencil in the brows and I tried a curler and ripped out 1/2 my lashes on one eye.Surprised  Just what I needed, LESS eyelashes.  I give up!!!

Ellen, ripping out lashes....OUCH!!!  Thank you for sharing...may be for now I'll still stick to my mascara and eye liner unless someone can offer some positive experiences...

Ray, send some of that weather this way.  I just checked the local weather and right now it says sunny and mid 80's for wednesday!!!

I will start a vacation thread. Please...ladies share your vacation experiences....

19 days into June and 13 of them have been rain. I wonder who pissed off Mother Nature?

I have been suckered into going out and buying LASH BLAST mascara, b/c if I see the commercial ONE more time, telling me that 6 million women LOVE this product I'm going to shoot myself.

I will give a full report this weekend.

I used that eye med and it worked and I now have enough lashes to use a curler---the curl doesn't last unless I reinforce it with mascara.

If I'm not going out ( which is a LOT lately with back problems) I just use an eyeliner on the upper lids (I do get fancy with colors tho--they are fun) and give my eye a look of almost mascara.  I use light brown eyeshadow on my lower lash line.  At my age, dark lower lash liner just makes my eyes look smaller and weird.  And I read that my age group shouldn't use lower lid mascara and I agree---It doesn't look good on me.

Looking forward to the report on Lash Blast.

Vacation thread sounds great.  I haven't been on a real vacation (other than a weekend here and there) for 12 years and we are going on a cruise with friends in August to the Southern Carribean.  Pray for me please, that there will be NO hurricane!!! Sealed  I went to try on a bathing suit today and the 30 lbs I have gained since dx nearly had me needing a paramedic!  I wish we could change plans and go to Hawaii so I could just wear MUMU's!!!!!
