I just hate reading that another sister is fighting this thing again. It seems like words are inadequate.
BTW, Maria, how are you feeling? I admire you. I know, I know..you say I shouldn't...but I do. You're hanging in there AND THE BEST IS YOU'RE HANGING WITH US! What better company could you be with. Just wish we all lived in the same area so we could help our sisters. I hate this disease!

Who wrote H.R. 1? Supposedly all the democrat committee chairs and Pelosi, probably Reid had much input and other committee chairs on the Senate side. These are the sponsors, and if we look at them they're probably a committee chairman.

17,000 U.S. Troops Headed For Afghanistan
President Obama Orders Surge, His 1st Big Move To Change The Course In Simmering Fight With Taliban, Al Qaeda
(CBS/AP) President Obama approved adding some 17,000 U.S. troops for the flagging war in Afghanistan, his first significant move to change the course of a conflict that his closest military advisers have warned the United States is not winning.
"This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires," Obama said in a statement.
That was a slap at his predecessor, former President George W. Bush, whom Obama has accused of slighting urgent national security needs in Afghanistan in favor of war in Iraq.
The White House said the new commander in chief would send a Marine unit and one additional Army brigade to Afghanistan this spring and summer. About 8,000 Marines are expected to go first, followed by an Army brigade, totaling about 4,000 troops, and 5,000 support forces. The United States has slightly more than 30,000 troops in the country now.
Obama's decision shifts the Army brigade and several thousand Marines from already approved deployments to Iraq later this year to new destinations in southern Afghanistan. As a result, the number of combat brigades in Iraq will likely drop from 14 to 12 by the summer, unless other units are identified to fill those slots.
A decision on that troop cut in Iraq has not yet been made, but Obama campaigned on a pledge to bring combat troops out of Iraq.
The new troops represent the first installment on a larger influx of U.S. forces widely expected this year. Obama's move would put several thousand troops in place in time for the increase in fighting that usually occurs with warmer weather and ahead of national elections in August.
The additional forces partly answer a standing request from the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. David McKiernan, who has sought as many as 30,000 additional U.S. troops to counter the resurgence of the Taliban militants and protect Afghan civilians.
"There is no more solemn duty as president than the decision to deploy our armed forces into harm's way," Obama said. "I do it today mindful that the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan demands urgent attention and swift action."
The new units are the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade from Camp Lejeune, N.C., and the 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, an Army Stryker brigade from Fort Lewis in Washington state.
The 3,900 soldiers from Fort Lewis had been scheduled to go to Iraq this summer. Fort Lewis spokesman Joe Piek said the 5th Stryker Brigade is the Army's newest Stryker Brigade - activated in May 2007 - and the fourth to be formed, equipped and trained at Fort Lewis. The brigade's soldiers are currently at the Army National Training Center in Fort Irwin, Calif., for exercises through the end of February.
The Pentagon outlined an addition of 12,000 combat forces, and said 5,000 support troops would be identified later. A Marine Expeditionary Brigade can vary in size and makeup.
Among the forces recently notified of deployment is a Marine unit of infantry and ground troops from Camp Pendleton in southern California, said Kurt Bardella, a spokesman for Rep. Darrell Issa, a Republican who represents the congressional district where the base is located.
Obama's plan to withdraw troops from Iraq allows him to increase the numbers in Afghanistan. Last fall, the Pentagon announced that the Fort Lewis brigade was being ordered to go to Iraq. Tuesday's announcement changes their destination. It was not clear whether the Pentagon would send another unit to Iraq in its place. If not, Iraq forces would drop by one brigade.
Ahead of his first foreign trip this week, Obama told a Canadian news organization that the United States will seek a more comprehensive, diplomatic approach to Afghanistan, where the U.S. has been engaged in war since 2001."I am absolutely convinced that you cannot solve the problem of Afghanistan, the Taliban, the spread of extremism in that region solely through military means," the president said in a White House interview with Toronto-based Canadian Broadcasting Corp.
Obama is scheduled to make a quick day trip to Ottawa on Thursday.
Obama agreed to a troop recommendation from Defense Secretary Robert Gates, the lone holdover from the Bush administration. Pentagon officials had been expecting a similar announcement for weeks, but the new Obama team took about a month choosing how and when to add forces to a war that has been sliding backward.
The president made his decision Tuesday, a senior White House official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement, said Obama informed congressional leaders and Afghan President Hamid Karzai by phone.
Karzai's office said the two presidents talked about security issues and the Afghan presidential elections in August during their first conversation since Obama took office.
Karzai admitted last week that almost four weeks after Obama's inauguration he still had not spoken with the U.S. leader. Karzai spoke with former President George W. Bush regularly, fueling speculation that Obama was sending a clear signal that Karzai's standing with him was much lower.
The planned troop deployment does not preclude sending more forces in the future, the official said. Any others, however, would come as part of a broader strategic review of the entire policy in Afghanistan and Pakistan, not as a stand-alone troop decision, the official said.
That review should be completed sometime around the end of March, which coincides with a NATO summit in Europe.
The strategy review for the Iraq war is expected to be completed in about two weeks or so, with announcements expected then on troop drawdowns, the White House official said.
U.S. commanders have said they want to beef up the expeditionary units and trainers in Afghanistan's southern region with enough new troops to stem the violence without becoming an occupying force that would alienate the population.
McKiernan has asked for more mobile forces and believes having a Stryker brigade will allow soldiers to move more easily along the rugged trails to the widely dispersed tribal enclaves.
Stryker brigades come outfitted with several hundred eight-wheeled, 19-ton Stryker vehicles, which offer greater protection than a Humvee and are more maneuverable than the heavily armored mine-resistant vehicles that are being used across Iraq.
Below is a transcript of President Obama's full statement on the Afghan troop increase:
There is no more solemn duty as President than the decision to deploy our armed forces into harm's way. I do it today mindful that the situation in Afghanistan and Pakistan demands urgent attention and swift action. The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan, and al Qaeda supports the insurgency and threatens America from its safe-haven along the Pakistani border.
To meet urgent security needs, I approved a request from Secretary Gates to deploy a Marine Expeditionary Brigade later this spring and an Army Stryker Brigade and the enabling forces necessary to support them later this summer. This increase has been requested by General McKiernan and supported by Secretary Gates, the Joint Chiefs and the Commander of Central Command. General McKiernan's request for these troops is months old, and the fact that we are going to responsibly drawdown our forces in Iraq allows us the flexibility to increase our presence in Afghanistan.
This reinforcement will contribute to the security of the Afghan people and to stability in Afghanistan. I recognize the extraordinary strain that this deployment places on our troops and military families. I honor their service, and will give them the support they need.
This increase is necessary to stabilize a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, which has not received the strategic attention, direction and resources it urgently requires. That is why I ordered a review of our policy upon taking office, so we have a comprehensive strategy and the necessary resources to meet clear and achievable objectives in Afghanistan and the region. This troop increase does not pre-determine the outcome of that strategic review. Instead, it will further enable our team to put together a comprehensive strategy that will employ all elements of our national power to fulfill achievable goals in Afghanistan. As we develop our new strategic goals, we will do so in concert with our friends and allies as together we seek the resources necessary to succeed. -
Oh and on this mortgage rescue plan...for those of you who bought a house in the last few years BUT WERE SMART ENOUGH TO BUY WITHIN YOUR MEANS, how do you feel about this? I read one plan where EVERY mortgage could be reduced by 30% and that by doing this everyone with a mortgage would benefit instead of just the crybabies that bought above their means and that this would not have a drastic effect on the banks as well as it would make it easier to sort out this mess, good mortgage/bad mortgage, because mortgages are bundled...OK, I would be willing to go with that but this bail out really ticks me off to a certain extent. It's like rewarding kids for being bad. I am willing to bet that most of the people (not all) who are in dire straights with their mortgage also have credit card/car debt up the yazoo...and who's fault is that? The credit card companies, the car dealers? For individuals, where does the blame stop and responsibility for actions start?
-
Paulette,
It would be hard to believe we would get anything from the mortgage rescue plan. I'll keep an open mind till I hear what he has to say. Us, the middle class, who actually put money down on a fixed note within our means, get something from a bailout plan? I'll wait. Actually, the only thing the dems who authored this need from us is to pay for it all.
So does anyone know what a State slush fund is that we're bailing out to the tune of $53 Billion?
It was on the Colburn list of pork.
-
Paulette, I was just reading about BO sending troops to Afganistan and there you have a great post on it. I wonder how the leftie peaceniks love their president now. Will they be marching in the streets with effigies of the murderer the way they did with Bush. Will they be lining every motorcade he is in with hateful signs and taunts? Of course not! They only hate wars led by republicans. The left never cried about Kosovo. They are begging for troops to Darfur. They just hate it when their man is not leading the troops.
I am actually hopeful that now that BO is in the oval office he sees the gravity of what Bush was trying to do and he will continue it. We cannot allow the taliban or al queda to set up training bases in the middle east that enables them to create another Sept. 11. Bush has had them on the run for 8 years. If BO allows them to regroup, we are back at square one. It is good he is sending more troops to Afghanistan now that Iraq is basically won. He needs to torch all those poppie fields and tell people to grow food, which can also be profitable. But he is dreaming if he thinks he will get more support from other countries. They are perfectly content to let America do the heavy lifting. They have weak armies and their population will not allow them to go to war. All their pacismfism worked really great in the last century didn't it? The French really helped their people by playing nice with Hitler didn't they? We are dealing with people who want to destroy the Western way of life. I just hope that the ONE in the WH has his blinders off.

Rosie if you remember Obama did vote to invade Afghanistan but voted against Iraq.........he has always said that we should have never gone into Iraq that our war was Afghanistan........so when he was on the campaign trail (well actually he is still on the campaign trail but I digress) he said he would pull the troops out of Iraq and send them to Afghanistan which now he is doing.........the only problem is that he has only commented 17,000 and Gates has asked for an 30,000 on top of the 30,000+ that are already there............we all know what happens when not enough troops are sent in........Bush made that mistake in the beginning of the Iraq war.........hopefully Obama will send the additional troops........this war is not going to be easy.......in fact it will probably make Iraq look like a picnic in the Park but this is what Obama has always said and now he must follow through on his commented..........we shall see............Shokk Coburn

I think we need a fairness doctrine on these forums. It seems some people are allowed to censor us just because they do not like what we have to say. Why is it that others can personally insult us, but we are reported for what we say about polititians? They have had 8 years of bushbashing, don't we have the same right to bamabashing? The double standard is so ridiculous.
ACORN Pushes Return of Fairness Doctrine by Connie Hair (more by this author) Posted 02/18/2009 ET
Updated 02/18/2009 ET
It was only last November that ACORN -- the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now -- was under FBI investigation for voter fraud in several states. Oh, wait: aren't those investigations going on now?
Never mind. ACORN -- a favorite of our Community Organizer in Chief -- has a new agenda. Which is really part of the old agenda: getting Democrats elected.
What Democrats fear most, and what many conservatives value most highly, is talk radio. Its political punch is conservatives' biggest weapon in the war of ideas. And, naturally, ACORN wants to kill it by restoring the old "fairness doctrine."
You'll find a plethora of liberals seeking to make sure that your young child has access to hard-core pornography on computers at the public library, but don't let them listen to Rush Limbaugh or, God forbid, Sean Hannity. The freedom to speak out against those in our government who seek to limit our freedoms is among the most fundamental of safeguards, and the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats are now working in earnest to destroy it.
ACORN has a long and rather thoroughly corrupt record, involved in everything from helping tens of thousands (and maybe hundreds of thousands) of people register to vote who aren't legally entitled to do so: illegal aliens, convicted criminals and the like. And now -- apparently planning how to spend their cut of the new Obama "stimulus" spending -- ACORN is readying a campaign to kill conservative talk radio.
The Capital Research Center, a non-partisan, non-profit group whose mission is to act as a watchdog over other non-profit groups, presented a quite extensive exposé last November of the founding, funding and activities of ACORN. This shocking report shows a well-funded group grounded in Marxist ideology and gangland-style tactics, whose self-proclaimed mission is none other than the destruction of capitalism in America. Vital to their success is the suppression of free speech.
The framework for the attempt by Democrats to silence political opposition is already in place in what the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) calls localism, a scheme set up in the form of local "community boards" that will decide whether or not your local broadcast station is meeting the standards required to review and renew their broadcast licenses every two to four years.
As you can see from the FCC localism webpage, localism regulations have already been through well over a year's worth of procedural hearings, and, as of April 2008, "Broadcast Information Specialists are Available for Public Inquires." The rules and regulations have been set forth in "The Public and Broadcasting," which is the FCC field manual for the ACORN "activists" and lawyers to intimidate your local community boards into harassing your local radio stations into submission or recommend the revocation of their broadcast license. Given the reported $4.2 billion allocated for ACORN and like groups by the so-called stimulus bill signed into law by Obama yesterday, all that is left to fulfill this scenario is the confirmation of Obama's new FCC chairman, nominee Julius Genachowski. After he's confirmed, the full frontal assault on our First Amendment rights will begin quickly.
ACORN's own website proudly displays their intent:II. Make the mainstream media accessible and accountable to low- and moderate-income people.
A. Reinstate the Fairness Doctrine in broadcasting, so that grass roots community groups have equal time to express their views.
B. Require cable TV companies to make good on their promises to allow community groups access to air time, or revoke their operating licenses.Membership on the local board is a key to the ACORN's plan: activists on state and local boards can give their national agenda support that can't be obtained elsewhere. "Diversity" and "underserved communities" are their mantra. The plan is for the boards to control the content of stations with their ability to make licensing renewal recommendations to the FCC. We all know how intolerant the left is of any ideas other than their own -- just look how any conservative speaker is treated by the left when they speak at any college campus around the country today.
I asked House minority leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) about this open secret called "localism" yesterday. He told me, "‘Localism is quickly becoming code for the efforts of liberals to limit free speech and dissent. The American people do not believe the federal government should be in the business of dictating or restricting what's on the public airwaves, and Republicans will fight any and every effort to stifle free speech."
Now what we need is a ground game. This is no longer about red or blue states. ACORN, the Obama administration and Congressional Democrats are openly forcing us into a clear choice between freedom and fascism. We'll defend our First Amendment rights and talk radio. There's no separating one from the other.Connie Hair is a freelance writer, a former speechwriter for Rep. Trent Franks (R-AZ) and a former media and coalitions advisor to the Senate Republican Conference. -
I totally agree, Paula - here we go AGAIN - bailing out those who made poor/irresponsible decisions. Even if those who made intelligent mortgage decisions are included in the reduction, they are still bailing out those who didn't. I'm with Rosemary...I will believe it when I see it! You're right - they need to look in the mirror and point their finger in the right direction. Most of them didn't get legal representation (101) - they just signed on the dotted line and went out partying. Had they retained legal representation, they would not be in the mess they are in. I am so tired of the irresponsible people in this country constantly trying to suck money out of those who are financially responsible. They need to stop trying to make those who have prospered, feel guilty for their success and accomplishments.
NO - Of course, I don't like to see people lose their homes...it's sad - BUT they DO need to take responsibility for their choices. I have always paid for my mistakes... I naively assumed everyone did... this is a real eye opener. How could I and millions of others NOT feel taken advantage of.

Diane, what blogs are you going to? I would like to read what they are saying.
-
This is weird. Am I the only one who can't see the political corner here on the forum Index list? I only gained access here by looking at active forums and we're still here. I wonder if others can see the political threads listed on the forum index? Or did my PC have another glitch?
Oh, and to set the record straight, I just heard on TV that Obama is not for the Fairness Doctrine. Smart move on his part. He could have put some radio stations off the air.
-
I couldn't find it either. Thought my vision had up and left me!! Could only find it on the Active topics list.
-
We might have been moved to the underbelly of BC.Org. We're here but only a few know where we are.
-
Same here. Looks like they are starting to shut it down. It was fun but I can see that it can be controversial.
-
Geez .. just had to tell Shokk how to find the Political Corner.
I hope they don't shut it down. I may not be a republican, but I sure do find all the links useful and lots of the discussion informative.
-
Hi Girls! lol This morning when I could no longer "see" the Political forum...I thought I had been barred and they had blocked me from it! lol Buuuuuuuuuuuuuut...now I know it's not just mey! lol
-
Talk about insensitive people comparing a president that they think he looks like. I never heard any liberals say FOUL with this. I've seen it often in cartoons.
-
Hello ladies and "you know who"..............maybe the mods have just taken us underground.......if we can find our way here then we can post............thanks Bren.........(it's a bit embarrassing that one of my Democrat sisters has to tell me how to get to our Republican thread) (told you guys she is one of the "good" ones).........maybe with the threads not posted on the main forum we won't be scaring newbies wonder what in the heck we are talking about instead of bc all the time.....maybe it's just the mods way of having a bit of fun with us........hmmmmmmmmm........since most of us has been through chemo that is a bit mean........ha............ok ladies got to get some more work done..........Obama said the word "crisis" 21 times during his monologue today.......sure am glad he is not using scare tactics like Bush did all the time..........Shokk
-
Shirley - They're saying FOUL today!
-
Shokk...I thought you were banned?
-
Foul, Laura? Did I do something wrong?
-
You? Of course not! lol
-
I did too............Shokk

No, I think there was a news article that Mr Sharpton is mad at, it was ok to call Bush a chimp but not ok to do that to Obama. If you do it to Obama it's supposedly racist. I posted an article on my thread that my dad was pointing out to us last night where what's good for the goose is not good for the gander......
Here are the nicknames they called him
Chimp Chimp-in-chief Chimpy Chimpy McCokespoon Chimpy McFlightsuit Chimpy McHalliburton ChimperorCurious GeorgeIncurious George -
Today's cartoon is only racist, if you think it is. Of course the dems will think it is.
-
OMG - I could not find the political threads today too and was going through major withdrawal!! Just clicked on "My Favorite Topics" and it appeared. Might be a good idea if we are the only ones who know we are here - others can't bother us.
Shirley - I think she is referring to the NY Post cartoon today. You can only cry foul when it pertains to BO!
As for the bailing out of mortgages - I think this is also for those who bought a house they could afford and it is now worth less than what they paid for it. They will be able to renegotiate their mortgages.
It is funny - now that the "stimulus" has passed the Fed is downgrading the outlook on the economy - thought the "stimulus" was going to help and we would see immediate results.
The governor of Wisconsin presented his budget yesterday - more taxes - like that is going to help the economy - already more people are leaving the state than are moving in - especially people with money - now just lets chase the few remaining out. We already have a brain drain. We were the model state for welfare reform - guess we will be the model state for how higher taxes on businesses, higher income individuals, gas taxes and capital gains works out.
-
I don't want to hear that it's only racist if an ape is compared to a black person. So, what does it mean when an ape is compared to a white person? Perhaps the writer of the article (which I haven't read by the way) was referrring to Obama in the same way people have "referred" to President Bush..which I think means...DUMB. That's how I wound interpret the article and picture if I read it and saw it. I only heard about it and the complaint from Sharpton.

suzfive - You can get here by clicking on ACTIVE TOPICS at the top of the page.
And yes...that's exactly what I was referring to.
