Bible Study for the Biblically Challenged Anyone?
Comments
-
Okay, I am going to ponder these very good suggestions and figure a way out..............I have a couple of ideas I am working on so it may be one of those things where I try something else, see if it works, if not, try plan 3, etc till we find the MOST ideal way to do it without being overwhelming. I was afraid that I was doing too much info----I just get so excited, I get carried away!

But I guess there are worse things I could have done--LOL
-
What would be great would be to have a forum dedicated to it, then click on it and see the different studies going on.......
I could also load each topic on one of my websites and post link to it here on this thread .........
And of course I could do a seperate thread for each one and delete them off this thread........
hmmm........I love a challenge!!!!
-
My 2 cents...Although this moves fast (don't get to read passage as quickly) I love reading along. I also like the exchange of thoughts and ideas and how it does jump around, since things are connected in strange ways. Why not keep here, throw some thing out and discuss for a week or so and then throw out some thing else. See where the spirit guides us. For me jumping to different threads, forums whatever is difficult- never make it to the next as I get so engrossed in one that I don't get to others. This is more like sitting in some one's living room, I like it this way.
Think I rambled a bit- hope it makes sense. Off to hospital for scans and treatment. Be well to day and Happy Thanksgiving to all. Elaine
-
Elaine thanks, and I think that for now doing one topic a week is a good idea. And I think that I have to shorten each post and post daily for the topic of the week. Does that make sense?
Example: If this weeks topic is "Sarah" then eveything I have on "Sarah" I divide into 5 sections and post 1 section a day. This way each post is short, so if someone only reads thread 2 times a week they can easily catch up.
So What I can do now, is go back and edit the posts I have already done and divide them into smaller ones and start from this point.
I am actually working on an even better solution, if I can get it figured out. I'll let you know what that is when I see if I can do it.
Heavenly Father,
I come before you this morning right here at my desk and I humbly ask you to wrap your tender arms around Elaine right now, Lord Jesus. Precious Jesus, be with her as she endures these scans and tests, Lord God, and I pray that each one is goodnews.
Oh Jesus, please comfort her, hold her head, and cover her with Your veil of protection during her treatments. Sweet Jesus, You didn't give Elaine cancer, Lord God, but You have given her Your grace, courage, strength, family, friends, doctors, nurses, and medicines to heal her body. We give praise to You right now, Lord God for all You have given us, while we deserve nothing, You offer Your love and Your grace absolutely free.
We praise You, we bless Your name, and we love You,
In Jesus name I pray, AMEN!
-
Reading your prayer made me cry and gave me chills ... Elaine, I pray for your good results. Claim health, claim healing in the LORD's name.
-
To all:
A quote from my inspirational:
"Cancer is not a journey that I would have chosen, but with the prayers and support of so many, the journey has been sweeter that I could ever have imagined." From an uninvited guess.
"But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after yo have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen and settle you." 1 Peter : 10.
Happy Holiday to all.
-
Psalm 94:19 is one for all that are on this journey.
When doubts filled my mind, your comfort gave me renewed hope and cheer.
-
Moody. I think it's wonderful that you are being so "flexible" in your approach to getting this started. Thank you for your open-ness to what others are seeking.
Slower, and smaller bite-sized posts would help me. I literally feel 'overwhelmed' when I just see a whole page of a post.
What is even more significant to me, than the Bible verse itself -- is the thoughtful discussion regarding the verse, that has yet to evolve.
I long for the discussion that might include some of these questions:
How is my life similar to Sarah's? Dis-similar?
How have I/you reacted to 'assignments-from-heaven'?
What does Sarah's story have to do with us today? With our BC journey? With our overall faith?
Does Sarah's role in her story have any parallels today?
well, maybe that gives you some insight into what would intrigue me..... the discussion in what i always treasure when i have been in a class.
-
Moody-
what a beautiful, calming, healing prayer- thank you for such a kind thing! Actually scan/bone survey was put off and only got the Lupron today because onc is concerned about a tooth infection/jaw thing which he is thinking may or may not be osteonacrosis. Have a call into the Oral Surgeon to see what next.
As far as Sarah...make it easy on yourself. Post things in whatever manner is convienient and stress-free for you! We all have to work on reducing stress, saying no and being realistic in what we can do, so there is time and energy to heal and enjoy and do what God intends.
Happy Thanksgiving all, gentle hugs, kickass prayers and peace to all in need tonight.
-
F&F (hope you don't mind abreviation, hands rather stiff tonight) I agree totally- I get so much from the discussions. I think some of the questions you listed would be interesting--how would we handle same things, similarities etc.
PinkyLee- I will check P 94:19 tonight--thanks
-
Okay, Here is what I am going to do. I'm going to start over!! LOL On my original post I am going to tell eveyone to start here on this page. I am going to start with Sarah, just cut it down a bunch and we can discuss her.
I want to thank everyone for being patient and helping me out and hanging in there while I iron out the bugs.
-
You are so kind to do all this work, its easy to be patient!

STUDY #1 MEET SARAI, ABRAM'S WIFE
Sarai is first mention in Genesis 12:29. At this point she is living in Ur and Abram has taken her as his wife. Ur was located on the Euphrates River about 200 miles from the Persian Gulf in the country we know today as Iraq. Her role is extremely important, as God makes His covenant to Abram:
12:2 "Then I will make you a great nation, I will bless you, and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. 12:3 I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed."
So in essence, Sarai's womb will "birth" this great nation. Which she does when she has Isaac.
Verse 30 tells us that she is "barren" meaning she hasn't been able to conceive yet.
Terah, Abram's father, decides to relocate his family, so they pack up and head to Canaan. They only make it to Haran which was located in the northern corner of Iraq/Iran. The land of Canaan was southwest of Haran and is located in today's Israel.
So lots of things happen between 12:1 - 10 so I'll pick-up with verse 11: "As he approached Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman. When the Egyptians see you they will say, ‘This is his wife.' Then they will kill me but will keep you alive. So tell them you are my sisterso that it may go well for me because of you and my life will be spared on account of you."
According to my bibles footnotes, Sarai was remarkably beautiful even for her advanced age. She was 10 years younger than Abram.
Please read 12:14 - 20
Do you think Abram told Sarah about his message from God?
Would we be obedient to God, pick up our family, and move as Abram did?
What do you think was going through her mind when she had to leave Abram and go to Pharoah?
Okay, post what you think about this.....let's talk!

I would very much like to join this thread. I am a Christian and have finally found the perfect non-demoninational church for me and have a wonderful church family now. my husband and I both knew it the first visit that this was "it" After we get a basic history of the old testement and learn the woman of the bible can we do the new testement from chapter one all the way through? We give back to our community and try to help others in need. We believe in the trinity and that Christ died for our sins. I will have to do some more studing of Sarah before I can comment. Bless you for starting this thread.
I do think that Abram told Sarah about his message from God.
Back in those days when God actually spoke to you, yes I think we would obey him.
-
Spar2 YEAH!!! Welcome! this is a fairly new thread and I am still trying to work out the best way to 1) keep people who are reading interested enough to continue 2) make easy enough to join in anytime 3) cover many topics (im still working on how to do this---i got a plan up my sleeve LOL)
I am so glad you have a church home where you and your family can grow your relationship with our Savior!!!
I like your thoughts too on Sarah. the next post will be a bit more interesting - but i needed to lay the foundation.....
-
Yeah! Moody, one thread on Sarah!!! I love Sarah, she is such an example of how to deal with assignments that may not seem the most fun and an example of humble woman yet called, "Princess" ...
-
Ok, I'm going through 12 and what I am gathering is that Abram is going into egypt to get food and flocks for the areas with famine and use his wife in order to get this???? Am I reading this correctly? If so, this doesn't sound right to me or my brain is really screwed up!
-
LuAnn asks: "what I am gathering is that Abram is going into egypt to get food and flocks for the areas with famine and use his wife in order to get this???? Am I reading this correctly? "
Conclusion: Abram wasn't manipulating Sarai, he was protecting her and himself and his family. If the Egyptians killed him, he would have no chance ever of rescuing her from Pharoah. But read all 3 parts so you will completely understand the magnitude of what is going on.
Answer Part 1: (I'm putting it in 3 parts so not so much to read at once
) Okay, to get the "prologue" you would actually have to start reading in chapter 11 verses 27 - 32. Terah, Abram's father, "loaded" up the whole family (back in those days, if one moved, they ALL moved, children, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, everyone) and they left their homeland Ur and headed to Canaan. They made it to Haran and there is where Terah died.
Beginning in Chapter 12 God tells Abram to get out of Haran and only take himself, Sarai, and Lot (his nephew he had adopted) and his servants, left the rest of the family, heading to the "promised" land as God had instructed.

Don't Waste Your Cancer ,---click would be a good place to start!
I grew up in a Christian home, attending 10 years of Christian school, but God really got ahold of me about 11 years ago (then age 34) , as I had wandered. Now, in this trial of breast cancer I find Him again calling me to pull closer to Him. My husband and I just finished a Bible study called Don't waste Your Life, a book by John Piper. The mentioned article above was in conjuntion with it, something somebody else had passed along to me. Any Christian w/ cancer should read this article. It is powerful, convicting, I am still trying to grasp it and claim it all but it is hard truths. I'd like to share a Thanksgiving blessing with you through my blog ,<-----. There's a song there I hope you'll find a blessing to you today! Happy Thanksgiving!
-
KorynH- Welcome! I am so glad you are here! Thank you for the beautiful song, it is a perfect message for truly giving thanks to everything the Lord has done, even things we just don't understand. I am so grateful that you shared it with us.
I hope you will join in with our studies as I am sure you could add a lot!
Have a Blessed Day!

Answer part 3:
So, they had to go to Egypt to get food. Well see, Sarai was beautiful according to the scriptures. Abram knew that once the Egyptians saw her they would kill him and take her to Pharoah to be in his "gal".......That is they would kill Abram if he is her husband, but not if they "lie" and say he is her brother. They will not kill him then because Sarai would be "available" to just take.
Of Course this is exactly what happened. The princes saw her, took her and Abram to Pharoah, and because Pharoah thought Abram was her brother, he was treated well. Abram was "tight" with God. I call it "having a direct line to the ‘big house'." Abram knew in his heart he was doing as God commanded, so God would take care of them both. He knew the "rules" and knew he had to play along and let God "show up and show out!" (a saying we use at church lol)
God of course plagued Pharoah and his house until he released both of them.
Conclusion: no, Abram wasn't manipulating Sarai, he was protecting her and himself and his family. If the Egyptians killed him, he would have no chance ever of rescuing her from Pharoah.
P.S. Excellent question! Thanks for the opportunity to clarify what was going on with Abram and Sarai!

As one BLESSED to have been raised in a Jewish home and a direct descendent of Sarah, Rachael, Rebecca, and Leah I find it offensive and rude to be referred to as having a FALSE religion because I don't believe Jesus is the messiah
-
-
Henny,I apologize that I offended you as that wasnt my intent. I did say in that post MANY times that it was "my opinion". As, your opinion of Jesus is different than mine, you are still intitled to your opinion as I am mine.
4 of my very best friends in the world are Jewish. I showed them my response and they were not offended. They all said that they thought of ones like hindu, buddah, scientology, etc. However, I have gone back and edited my response to clarify that I define it by "false gods" which is a biblical term all through the bible.
This bible study will be about the whole bible , both Old and New Testaments. I hope you will join in and add to the discussions, if only regarding the Old Testaments.
James 1:2-3 "My brothers and sisters, consider it nothing but joy when you fall into all sorts of trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance." MoodyK13

Henny-
I was brought up in the christian faith and I can not speak for others; I have never quite understood or been comfortable with the concept of "false religions" based on the belief or disbelief of Jesus. Seems to me the important thing is the relationship with God (or however one refers to the universe, holy being, nature etc) and how we treat others.
I think this is a good place to remember that this was started (I believe) to read, share and question what we have read in the bible (any version, any translation) agreeing to disagree. All beliefs, religions and faiths welcome to share, but not convert.
-
Interesting you go back to terah because that man lost me. He had three boys, abram, nahor and haran but haran passes away early and has a son named Lot.
Not abram marries araai and hanor marries milchah but this is what confuses me. It says she id the daughter of haran, the father of milchah and Iscah. Help, who is whose child?
-
LuAnn - LOL I love that I was able to understand your writing-too funny!
Terah is father of : Abraham, Nahor & Haran-by one wife, & Sarah - by another wife
Haran is father of: Lot & Milcah (Nahor's neice)
Nahor marries Milcah (yes, his neice) their children: Huz, Buz, Kemuel, Chesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel
Abraham marries is half sister Sarah & after she dies, he marries Keturah
Abraham and Hagar (not married): Ishmael
Abraham and Sarah: Isaac
Abraham and Keturah: Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak and Shuah
