Bible Study for the Biblically Challenged Anyone?

I just wanted to comment on Sarah being a spiritual woman .... when she married Abraham, she didn't expect to live in tents and live a nomadic lifestyle. They had to travel with their household, animals and living quarters. I forget how large the group was but remember later, they are big enough to rescue Lot... (At the time that Abraham rescued Lot, he had 318 trained men who were born in his household (meaning many more women, children and untrained men), all before he even fathered any offspring. When Rebekah came to be Isaac's wife, she brought with her her nurse and her maids.)
Sarah left the prosperous city of Ur ... she had a house!! Servants! Abraham was not poor. Living in a city meant protection. Each city was like a mini-kingdom. Big walls around the cities (sometimes called city-states) with a government to protect you. They were going off to live in tents ------ no walls for protection. Subject to maurauding bands, armies, etc!!!! They must rely on God's protection ... the bible says Abraham put his faith in a city with real foundations: God's Heavenly city .. his kingdom .. the only lasting government that could really protect them.
Sarah had to have faith as she left many of her things in Ur, especially her house! Gosh! Can you imagine: if you need to go grocery shopping you just go get it ... she needed fabric, just go send a servant. Out in the deserts she would have had to plan or do without. Worry about enough water or making sure the servants have prepared the meats and fruits .. preserve them for future use.

Good point! I believe that most of the people in the bible, particularly the OT, did have a relationship with God in one form or another. It was probably just understood and therefore no need to clarify this to the reader. Thanks Rock!

LuAnn,
You can find Sarah in;
Genesis
chapter 17 :17, 19, 21
chapter 18: 6, 9-15
chapter 20: 2, 14, 16, 18
chapter 21: 1-3, 6-7, 9, 12
chapter 23: 1, 2, 19
chapter 24: 35, 67
chapter 25: 10, 12
chapter 49: 31
ISIAH
chapter 51:2
Hope this helps. I don't know the bible that well, I have a program on my computer that you can put in almost anything and will tell you everywhere it appears. It's helped me many times.

thanks Nancy, my grandchildren where here all day today with nasty colds are were terribly cranky! I think my DIL is taking them to a bday party tomorrow so I will take my quiet time to either read or nap, whichever my body tells me is more improtant. I am reading what the girls are writing and learning alot and I am anxious to get back to reading the sections I was in when I set my bible aside.

Moody by the time Abraham left Ur, the research shows that it was a hugely pagan city. Many false gods. After the tower of Babel when man's language was confused, they took all their false ideas and spread them when they dispersed. Religion was very patriarchal ... until Judaism came along then people were obligated to use priests and it stayed that way until Jesus ...
-
I am home now with my own bible and books ......
------
Another thing I remember about Sarah is that she is like all of us ... sometimes doubting and wanting to take the bull by the horns and take control. Sometimes things don't happen fast enough. Here she knew what God's promise was ... that Abraham and she would be parents! Back in that day, concubines children were considered children of those that owned them. Hagar was her slave. So rather than wait on her LORD, Sarah took things into her own hands and told Abraham to sleep with Hagar. As we saw, her impatience did not pay off!!! Her impatience and action was not the answer. God would fulfill his promise in his own time and his way ... And apparently they needed to learn to rely on God's promise.
-
Rock (see I listen LOL) do you all ever sleep? Not sure what I am doing here at 1 am but I can't sleep no matter what. My mind is to busy with so many ideas.... I will probably crash and burn tomorrow. I do want to thank you all for the informative info, will help makes some sense of things as I read. Nothing worse than seeing that this family was formed by him and this by him and it goes on countless times and I lose track of who is who. see we all came for the same parents somewhere along the line it seems.... anyway, just thought I would drop a note, use a good name because I do take a hint or maybe a shove LOL. By the way I like your new avatar!
-
Rock you are so right about Sarah. She wouldnt wait for God and when she took matters into her own hands effectively laid the foundation for the Islamic extremist we have today.
And your right about Ur it was a pagan city. Here is an excerpt from Easton's Bible Dictionary:
"Ur was consecrated to the worship of Sin, the Babylonian moon-god. It shared this honour, however, with another city, and this city was Haran, or Harran. Harran was in Mesopotamia, and took its name from the highroad which led through it from the east to the west. The name is Babylonian, and bears witness to its having been founded by a Babylonian king."
-
Well tomorrow I'm gonna post about Lot's wife and his daughters. It will only take one post to cover them.
Unless anyone wants me to wait so they can soak in "Sarah" more........
-
I will not be able to take time to read and concentrate til later in the week. Since most recent cancer tx and narcotics it takes two or three times to read sometihng to take in what it is saying. so trying to do it with my precious little babies around doesn't do me any good at all! I am actually going to have a quiet Thanksgiving because everyone will be off at other peoples houses. Guess this is a sign that my children are growing up with they have inlaws and boyfriend/girlfriends houses for holiday dinners

I am reading the posts though and think that will help me understand the chapters as I read them. Thanks for starting this thread

I would love to participate, but because I am Catholic, some of the things I believe about the Scriptures may not mesh with some of the things that people of other Churches believe. So I'll come in and read occasionally, but probably won't post much, unless some other Catholics decide to join in also

God Bless you all,
Gracie
-
GracieM LuAnn is catholic so join us. I know our bibles are the same the difference is your bible has 7 more books than mine (i think that is right) but i believe the scriptures are the same. and of course all "ideas" or "opinions" or "thoughts" are welcome as it causes everyone to think.
and most importantly of all I want everyones relationship with God and His word to strengthen and that means everyone is responsible for making their OWN decisions about how His word speaks to them. He will speak to me differently than He will to you. so I dont want anyone to just "take my word for it" unless of course it does help with your own relationship---that is what this is all about.
so please feel free join in and to share!!!!!
The ONLY thing that might get me "fired up" is if someone wants to CONTRADICT Gods word then argue about it. I dont worry about that happening here though. We are all here to learn and encourage not argue and contradict.

-
/Thanks, Moody
I will follow along
I appreciate your kind words
Blessings,
Gracie

Perhaps anyone who says that their truth excludes the truths of others only has part of the greater truth. So how is calling any other religion a false religion if it doesn't agree with you, not judging? Given how the various religions, especially the catholic church has changed our references (the Bible) over the eons, I wonder just how much we can trust a given passage? My conscience and my personal relationship with the holy spirit asks me to be tolerant and not judge another's path to God. God in all his omnipotence, omniscence and omnipresence can do anything, knows all and is everywhere so I am not about to call another person's path to God wrong or false, it is hard enough for me to keep my path straight and my relationship clean without judging another's with such harsh words.
I find God of the New Testament to be loving and open, not isolating and closed. The New Testament is a new covenant that reaches out to all the people of the world without judgment. It commands us to love our neighbors as we love ourselves, it doesn't say to just love Baptists or Episcopalians.
I have learned by the instruction and patience of God to be tolerant with myself when I fail and to forgive myself for my missteps. Can I do less for anyone else? Perhaps God has provided many paths and routes to his presence, can we pick one passage from a book that has gone through many translations, additions and subtractions since the early disciples wrote God's words, to the exclusion of the the whole message of love and tolerance, and still be sure it is God's will?
Can we take the tone and the intolerance of the Old Testament when God was trying to establish his people, over the New Covenant of the New Testament? I believe that I am not capable of judging other's religion, I can offer mine and it may be accepted or not, but I am not the one to judge if another's path will lead to God, that is between that person and God.
I humbly offer my perspective and my conscience, I may be wrong, but it is what I believe. I offer you all what I have come to believe and live by, the way I believe God has instructed me to live. You may accept it or not, but I wonder how love and tolerance will fail to be God's desire when judgment and exclusion has caused so much violence and pain in our world?
The message I recieve is that Satan will pick apart the message of God and lead us astray with passages taken out of context, I am commanded to listen to the word of God, not listen to part of it and be lead astray by something out of the context of the whole message. Suppose originally, the passage about Christ being "the way" was not written in an exclusive way, perhaps it was misinterpreted by some zealot about Christ's teachings and wrote it as the only way. Christ himself said that we all have God within us, we can all be as he was. Did he mean we can all be the son of God? Did he mean that if all women who had faith as he did would suddenly become male? The overall message of the New Covenant is of love and tolerance without judgment, for me that doesn't reconcile with determining other people cannot reach God in any way different from my own.

TeoDowning wrote:
"The message I recieve is that Satan will pick apart the message of God and lead us astray with passages taken out of context"
And sadly that is exactly what happened. Of the 6+ paragraphs I wrote pouring my heart out and explaining what I believe God has called me to do, the only thing you saw was the words "false religion". I listed 10 optional topics and the only one you saw was "false religion".
On the first page someone asked me to clarify what I meant by false religion, and I did. It is on page one. I clearly indicated what my OPINION was. Everyone has their own definition of "false religion".
Maybe the word "false" isnt the best word to use, but it is one I have always related to when I think of religions that worship any god other than The God. The bible clearly states these gods as "false" gods so I think of those religions as "false" religions.
Anyone and everyone is welcome here but I will NOT apologize for the Word of God in the form of my Bible. I won't waiver from the Bible. I made it very clear in the introduction what I believe and I am prepared to defend it, but I won't engage in an argument as that is not of Christ.
I use scripture THEN express what God revealed to me through that scripture. I WANT other peoples thoughts to. That is another reason I started this thread. If I didnt care or didn't want to know how God speaks to others, I wouldn't have started the thread. I already know my own thoughts. Because God uses the SAME scriptures to speak to people in different ways, I want to know how God speaks to everyone.
I am believe that insinuating that I am judgemental and intolerable in extremely unfair. I hope that you will go back to page one and read ALL my posts so you will get a better idea of who I am and what I want this thread to be. I know my intentions are honest and fair but most importantly Jesus knows my heart and with that, I am at complete ease.

John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
John 1:14 "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."
John 3:18 "He who believes in Him in not condemned; but who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."
John14:6 "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"These verses are pretty exclusive and fairly difficult to "misinterpret".
I know the bible I have today is the word of God and is the same bible that was written thousands of years ago. When the Dead Sea scrolls were discovered, scholars from all over the world and every religion were able to examine them. By 500 BC the 39 books of the Old Testament were completed and preserved in Hebrew Scrolls. Over the next 1600 years the rest of the 66 books were written by 40 authors in 3 languages, 13 countries, and 3 continents and guess what! They never changed! These scrolls were discovered in caves in 1947 and scholars were able to identify 825 of the 870. There were 19 copies of Isaiah and 25 copies of Dueteronomy and 30+ copies of Psalms, but the most important thing is that all 825 scrolls identified are 99.5% accurate of the original King James Version we have today!!!!!! ONLY GOD could see to that! Gives me chills!
There are OTHER religions that have actually taken God's word and re-wrote it to fit their way of life. I am NOT talking about translations that mean the same thing using a thesaurus of words, I mean actually changing the words to change the meaning of the scriptures. The bible warns us of this 3 times that I can think of off the top of my head. Deuteronomy 4:2, Proverbs 30:5-6 and Revelations 22:18-19.
TeoDowning wrote:

I don't have a way to God, Jesus does. I wouldn't even pretend to have my own way to God, however, if someone wants to know the way to God, I can show them in the scripture:
Romans 10:11-13 " For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved."
I hope you will join us as I would love to know your thoughts and see how God talks to you through His word.

Gracie I am catholic, just not one that goes to church every Sunday. Moody invited me to join into this group and I had started reading the bible on my own prior to this and though this might be a good opportunity for me to better understand certain parts of derrive more meaning into what I read. No one here is preaching his or her religion, just discussions of topics in everyone's bible and our belief in God. Each religion has their own rites and rituals but this is just a non denominational discussion. So far it has been enlightening for me. It is helping better understand someof the stuff I have been reading about Sarah
So Moody, what happened to your undersatnd of Lot that you were going to post today or did I miss it?

Totally enjoying this thread. Been a long time since I read the Bible so I will keep reading until I think I have something worthwhile to contribute.

PLEASE GO TO PAGE 4 TO START STUDY

Thanks, Luann and Moody
Yeah, I will follow along
I just didn't want to cause any problems because there are some differences in meanings of scriptures and the last thing I want to do is to cause any friction
But I appreciate the invitations to come and discuss and share
Blessings,
Gracie

GracieM-- said "because there are some differences in meanings of scriptures"
You are so right!!!! God speaks to everyone differently!!! That is one of the reasons I started this thread. I have read scripture and gotten one meaning and re-read it later and get a different meaning!!!!
I'm glad your gonna join in!!

-
Gracie- I believe the point of this thread was to share thoughts, questions, interpretations and anwers--nothing is right or wrong. Hope you will join in and share your thoughts.

I'm absolutely NOT a Biblical scholar in any way, shape or form. I have been reading and expect to continue to do so, but doubt I'll have much to add. [I'm attempting to cut my addiction to these threads/boards and immerse myself in my real life. LOL.... you see how well that's working.]
I wondered about your comment above:
"Back then, women were just held in a very high esteem."
Everything I've ever been 'taught' about women's roles in that period of history, was that we were considered very little more than property -- again, at that time. Hence the few mentions of women, even fewer 'contributions' of women.
It has always been my understanding that the New Testament is so foundationally different, (historically speaking) because of Jesus very interactions with the invisible of the day: women, the sick, tax collectors, the fringe of society etc. He rocked the boat everywhere, with the leaders of the day, because of his interactions/acknowledgements of women etc.
At least that's been my understanding, from numerous classes/teachers.
As for me, I can grasp/am interested in 'short' posts and ones that are supportive of the widest possible range of experiences.
-
EWB is exactly right.
By the way....am I going to fast with the posts? Am I giving too much info at one time? After I finish Rebekah, do you want me to continue with women in the bible or switch to another subject?
If we stay with "women" then the next one will be Abrahams 2nd wife (after Sarah died) and then Esau and Jacob's wives.
If you want to switch subjects, what do you want me to switch too?
Would someone else like to do a subject for us? I love doing them, but I dont want to be "the boss".
Thanks to everyone for reading and supporting each other!!

-
One last question: Is there ANYTHING you have ever wondered about in the bible, or where to find something in the bible, or what the bible says about something? If so, post it and I will tell you where to look for your answers.
-
faithandfifty I may have made a "type-o" I meant to say that women were NOT held to a very high esteem" and actually your words are a better way of saying what I was trying to say!
Thanks! My notes actually said "is that up to this point there isn't nearly the history and detailed info on women in the Bible as there are the men. Back then, women were just not held in a very high esteem."But when I typed it here I mis-typed........and I have no doubt I will do it again---LOL so PLEASE when something doesnt look right ---let me know--
!! And you are right about women in the New Testament, they do play a much stronger role. Well actually the deeper we get into the Old Testament, the more info there is on women. Even with Rebekah, there is more about her than Sarah or the others.
-
Well I'd like to actually read the bible to follow along with your posts but am afraid I might be falling behind greatly! Grandkids left today and I want to sleep tonight so hopefully tomorrow will give me reading time. It helps to hear explainations along with the reading but I do want to keep up.
-
Moody, to me you are moving wayyyyyyyyy to fast ........
We've totally skipped over Sarah and Hagar .... and that is DOOZIE of what the two represent (free woman and slave)
I think that each subject maybe should take a whole thread ... I have only been missing since late night on the 23rd and you've gone from Sarah ... right thru Lot and then onto Rebekkah .. there is no time for reflection, prayer or meditation. Really, I think that in order for everyone to participate we need to have different threads on each subject.
