WB- Bar, sorry you're having so many side effects. Did your onc at least try to help with the side effects?
What does everyone think about the Leiberman situation? I think it was the best move, even though I abhor how he campaigned against Obama. In an ideal world, I would hope that politicians were independent enough to support what they truly believe was the right thing for the country and I admire those who speak out and shout, "the emperor has no clothes". Imagine if that was done during Hilter's regime, Bush's presidency or during WWII when we put Japanese americans into camps. That said, Leiberman could have supported McCain without being negative against Obama. I don't mind as much that he chose to campaign for McCain, rather than just support him and speak at the repub convention, how can we ever hope for bipartisanship in the country if the president and/or senate punish those who don't tow the party line. I think Obama was more than gracious by saying he thought Leiberman should keep his chair. Starting off the Obama administration with Leiberman as drama just wouldn't be worth it politically. That said, if Leiberman acts in a way that is against Obama's policies in his chair position, that would need to be dealt with. I haven't heard glowing recommendations of Leiberman as the chair, compared to what Waxman did in congress in the same spot in congress. We shall see.
-
Amy: Hahahahaha that shows how much I know lol. I still don't like them for what they did..
Nicki
-
Rocktober, I get the joke.
Amy, I think Leiberman keeping his perks was completely the doing of Obama. If reid and Pelosi had their way, he'd be outta there. But Obama is showing them who's boss fast, and that's a good thing. We're inching close to that magic #60. Leiberman votes Dem on most issues. There's room for dissent in this administration, unlike the current one. But don't you just bet Leiberman has a choke chain on...

Wow, Bobby Jindal is spot on with the biggest gop problems and his solution ideas sounds like Obama's Campaign Platform:
Jindal: Something Is Wrong With The GOP
As Republicans, we need to do three things to get back on track," he said on CBS' Face The Nation. "Number one, we have got to stop defending the kind of spending and out-of-control spending that we would never tolerate in the other side. You know, when voters tell us that they trust Democrats more to cut their taxes [and] control spending, that tells you something is wrong with the Republican Party. We've got to match our actions with our rhetoric.
"Number two, we've got to stop defending the kinds of corruption we would rightfully criticize in the other party. The week before the election, our most senior senator is convicted on federal charges - and that's only the latest example.
"Number three, we have got to be the party that offers real solutions to the problems that American voters, American families are worried about. We don't need to abandon our conservative principles; we can't just be the 'party of no.' We need to offer real solutions on making health care more affordable, on the economic challenges facing families, on the international threats."..........................................
Speaking of Stevens (Number Two), looks like he is losing by over 2000 votes now. The GOP took a pass on voting him out today, it seems they want to wait and see if he wins, I guess.

"Number two, we've got to stop defending the kinds of corruption we would rightfully criticize in the other party.
Cheney, Gonzales Indicted By South Texas Grand Jury
AP | November 18, 2008 04:03 PM
A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.
The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.
Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.
Another indictment charges state Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies.
The indictments were first reported by KRGV-TV.

Wow, this is awesome! I'm sure Darth and Al will be pardoned by G. for all things related to prisons and torture, but it's nice to know they've been publicly exposed, and in Texas no less. Hee-hee. Our bc sister, Molly Ivins, is indeed smiling in heaven right now!
Deputy Dog Lieberman is a self-serving, opportunist worm. I would have voted to boot him, but I suppose the Dems are seeing the bigger picture. I've heard all the arguments for keeping him. I just hope Emanuel keeps him well in line.
Go Begich!

Hi Ladies!
I've been dealing with setting up an MRI to see if this crap has spread. I am keeping a positive outlook and saying it hasn't. So...I have been AWOL on here! What about this notion the republicans are calling an "Obama Recession" are you kidding me??? I can't even believe they are saying that!! Maybe Rush should ease up on the vicoden! Everyone needs to start looking at the solutions. The repubs are so angry about the majority vote, they waste their energy on finger pointing. But the blame of the recession, it's almost so ludicrous I can't believe they said it!

It's really horrifying to think what has happened in eight years. And we watched it happening...helpless...because of all those folks out there who believed in Republican honesty!!!Actually, Bush made lots and lots of very bad decisions, but the economy has become so complex it is hard for ANYONE to know what the right solutions are. ARE THERE solutions? I just wish we could have some sort of economy that didn't involve so much waste, so many commercials, and so much emphasis on buying....Back in my grad school days there were two schools of thought on economics....the socialists and the capitalists...nowadays we're beyond all that and into something else and I don't know what it is...I think I need to read some more. Even Greenspan...the man who kept our economy stable for a generation...said he didn't foresee the problems with investment banks. My brother just recommended a book by Robert Reich, someone of my generation who was a Rhodes Scholar and is supposed to write very clearly, a well respected economist, he also has a blog spot http://robertreich.blogspot.com/Haven't touched it yet. Think we need to do some reading...Linora
-
OMG!!!
Just read a little over at the RR blog and came upon this...What happened to all the bailout money?
About a third has gone into dividends the banks are paying their shareholders. Some of the rest into executive salaries and bonuses. Another portion toward acquisitions designed to raise share values. Another chunk for bailing out giant insurer, AIG....(Robert Reich)
When I was talking about Uncle George I was just shooting from the hip...now it is horrifying to hear from an expert that knows abouto these things that the money is just going directly into the pockets of the CEOs and big execs!!!
Crap!!! (Pardon me, Amy!!)
How much more damage is going to be done in these final months?!!!!
LA-Phoenix....couldn't agree with you more about Lieberman...was a self-serving J*!
Little G....hoping and sending you positive vibes that everything is A-OK....I may be getting an MRI soon myself!!!!
Linora
-
Well, I am with you all on the bailout... I wish George would shut up and start packing, we don't need anymore decisions from him ...

Little-g: Sorry to hear you're having to deal with an MRI. Praying it's nothing. Hope we can help provide some distraction in the meantime.
Linora, great cartoon. I was just reading a report about the climate conference going on in California now, headed by Schwarzenegger. Obama did a video presentation, pledging U.S. participation in the next Kyoto Treaty and setting specific goals. Everyone was jazzed by his appearance. Rob Lowe got a Chinese contingency to participate by wining and dining them, Hollywood-style. They were all fans of The West Wing! So as bleak as it is now, it's going to get better.
It's unbelievable that Bush continues to sign these executive orders and such in an attempt to cement his dismal legacy. And do nothing about the bailout fiasco at the same time. Too much "leadership" where we don't need it, and not enough where we do.
-
I am quite disgusted to see that Lieberman, despite being voted out in the Democratic primary in 2006, and despite campaigning for every single Republican in the last two years, is allowed to keep his chairmanship. Maybe there is another angle I haven't seen yet, but I don't see the 60 votes as being that important right now, as we have a president who is not going to be a partisan hack and will actually seek consensus from both sides of the aisle on the issues that we care most about.
And there is no doubt that Bush will pardon every single one of the criminals assoicated with his dreadful administration - including himself!
-
Bush is just keeping the promises he made before he got elected. He's a Good Ole Boy!!! That's what those guys do, take care of each other.Fortunately, this is the dawn of a new era, the Obama Era. I understand that he is putting heads together all over the country to research and try to solve our economic problems. I think Bailouts are a Huge Mistake, though. There doesn't seem to be any way to control how the money is spent once it is given...Let the economy settle back to its own natural zero point...stop bolstering. What we need is a New Deal...jobs, perhaps more public works projects, more research on using energy more efficiently, an economy for the working and middle classes. It is positively revolting to see how disgustingly rich the upper classes have become...just take a tour of the Bravo channel...those spoiled housewives, those flipper real estate wheeler dealers, all the money spent on clothes and cosmetics....I just LUV fashion but it should be for everybody...we all need to be more creative and resourceful. We need more Mom and Pop businesses...more regional and local designers. I say, out with the Big Box stores...the big parking lots, lets go back to Main Street with sidewalks and people who remember you when you walk in the door!I just got back from a vacation in Quebec City...a city that is alive with small businesses, local artists, theatre, music. Wonderful small restaurants everywhere, lots of small boutique hotels, a gallery on every corner, beautifully locally designed clothes in the shops, each item unique at affordably prices. Quebec has done a lot to promote local artists and local business...maybe we should do the same, on a state or regional basis.Ok... enough ranting for one day...Linora

Thanks so much Obama ladies for all the positive thoughts!!!! I have my MRI tomorrow, and my doc. said he'd call me on Friday. At least the wait will be over. And yes, this board is a great distraction! :-) Linora..I agree with you as to the excessive greed and gluttony in the US. I will not watch any of those shows, no access hollywood or crap like that. These people have FAR to much money given to them for something so mindless! Why don't we pay the people with innovative ideas, like making a hydro car, or supplying us with geo-thermal heating. Why don't they get some of the big bucks? It is such a greedy world. I would love to go back to small town also. The trick of the government as it was, is to keep us so individualized, so brain washed with commercials and wanting more and more and making the differences between us seem huge, that most humans are so out of touch with what its like to be a "human." Can you imagine if we all got together and started talking? How much we would know and start questioning...wow...if that were the case, I don't believe we would be in the situation we are. The US is mind numbed by all the shiny new things and keeping the world out, except for the TV. Not good for any of us except for the fat cats at the top, that love us being so numb and individual. We do need to get to know each other again. And talk, and make eye contact. We need to know what's going on in our neighborhoods and our country. And we need to kick Paulson's ass out!!!!!! Who TF is he to have control of all this money??? The bail out is a BS scam as it sits right now, to further line the pockets of these guys. I'm sure they are getting all they can while they can. I would yank that all back (what's left of it). And then restructure. And if some of them go down in the mean while..oh well!! All the banks should have to suck up the bogus loans they made and extend them and drop the interest rates to what they are getting, or close to. They wouldn't loose money, it would just take longer to get. OK..well..that is my rant of the day. Maybe :-)

This post-election essay was written by Garrison Keiller of the "Prairie Home Companion" broadcast on NPR, near the mythical Lake Wobegon :-):
Enjoy!
----------------------------------------------------------------
Be happy, dear hearts, and allow yourselves a few more weeks of quiet exultation. It isn't gloating, it's satisfaction at a job well done. He was a superb candidate, serious, professorial but with a flashing grin and a buoyancy that comes from working out in the gym every morning. He spoke in a genuine voice, not senatorial at all.
He relished campaigning. He accepted adulation gracefully. He brandished his sword against his opponents without mocking or belittling them. He was elegant, unaffected, utterly American, and now (Wow) suddenly America is cool. Chicago is cool. Chicago!!!
We threw the dice and we won the jackpot and elected a black guy with a Harvard degree, the middle name Hussein and a sense of humor - he said, "I've got relatives who look like Bernie Mac, and I've got relatives who look like Margaret Thatcher."
The French junior minister for human rights said, "On this morning, we all want to be American so we can take a bite of this dream unfolding before our eyes." When was the last time you heard someone from France say they wanted to be American and take a bite of something of ours? Ponder that for a moment.
The world expects us to elect pompous yahoos and instead we have us a 47-year-old prince from the prairie who cheerfully ran the race, and when his opponents threw sand at him, he just smiled back. He'll be the first president in history to look really good making a jump shot. He loves his classy wife and his sweet little daughters. He looks good in the kitchen. He can cook Indian or Chinese but for his girls he will do mac and cheese. At the same time, he knows pop music, American lit and constitutional law. I just can't imagine anybody cooler. Look at a photo of the latest pooh-bah conference -- the hausfrau Merkel, the big glum Scotsman, that goofball Berlusconi, Putin with his B-movie bad-boy scowl - you put Barack in that bunch and he will shine.
It feels good to be cool and all of us can share in that, even sour old right-wingers and embittered blottoheads. Next time you fly to Heathrow and hand your passport to the man with the badge, he's going to see "United States of America" and look up and grin. Even if you worship in the church of Fox, everyone you meet overseas is going to ask you about Obama and you may as well say you voted for him because, my friends, he is your line of credit over there. No need anymore to try to look Canadian.
And the coolest thing about him is the fact that back in the early '90s, given a book contract after the hoo-ha about his becoming the First Black Editor of the Harvard Law Review (FBEHLR), instead of writing the basic exploitation book he could've written, he put his head down and worked hard for a few years and wrote a good book, an honest one, which, since his rise in politics, has earned the Obamas enough to buy a very nice house and put money in the bank. A successful American entrepreneur.
The last American president to write a book all by his lonesome self, I believe, was Theodore Roosevelt, who, on graduation from Harvard, wrote "The Naval War of 1812," and in my humble opinion, Obama's is the better book for the general reader, but you be the judge.
Our hero who galloped to victory has inherited a gigantic mess. The country is sunk in debt. The Treasury announced it must borrow $550 billion to get the government through the fourth quarter, more than the entire deficit for 2008, so he will have to raise taxes and not only on bankers and lumber barons. His promise never to raise the retirement age is not a good idea. Whatever he promised the Iowa farmers about subsidizing ethanol is best forgotten at this point. We may not be getting our National Health Service cards anytime soon. And so on and so on.
So enjoy the afterglow of the election a while longer. We all walk taller this fall. People in Copenhagen and Stockholm are sending congratulatory e-mails -- imagine! We are being admired by Danes and Swedes! And Chicago becomes the First City. Step aside, San Francisco. Shut up, New York. The Midwest is cool now. The mind reels. Have a good day.
-
Someone suggested making the banks who got and are getting bailout money loan the money to the automakers. Not sure how I feel about that. The auto manufacturers need to start looking themselves in the mirror when ask for money-- hello, taking a private jet at a cost of $20,000 per person to the hearings? What ever happened to flying coach or rending a van and taking a road trip. I think the gov. should some how encourage the automakers to consolidate their operations focusing forward on greener technology while keeping successful models.
What do you guys think about Daschel for Health and Human Services? My concerns are that he hasn't been particularly GLBT friendly, and if he's going to be involved in policies surrounding GLBT issues like DADT and DOMA- I'm not sure he's going to be open to complete equal civil rights. He's obviously a bright man and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
-
It was Obama who recommended Liberman get to keep his post. You got to hand it to Obama and the new level of bipartisanship that we are now going to have. Perhaps the government will actually be able to get some stuff down under the new administration. This speaks very highly of Obama in mho
-
I agree blaest.
How about Alaska, pulling itself out of the edges of hell by narrowly electing Begich over convicted felon Stevens? Scary that the vote was that close and I still think the majority of the people in the state are idiots, but at least they didn't chose the felon over the mayor of Ankorage.
-
FINALLY, can we get a little stem cell support PLEASE!!!! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO,WE WON!!!!!!
Tracey
-
Blaest, glad to see you back...I wondered if you had given up!!! For our sakes I hope you don't!!!
Anyway, I don't think I agree with you about Lieberman; maybe it was politic for Obama to make concessions to him, maybe he's too big to go away but I don't like him.
DH made an interesting remark about Obama. We both agree that the best presidential candidates come from the Senate---as long as they haven't been there too long. The more years you put time into the Senate the more compromises and promises you have to make, and that can give you a lot of baggage to take into the presidency. That's why a young guy like Obama is so great...he's still got his own idealism and he hasn't sold himself up the river yet!!!
On stem cell research Tracey, we got it in Michigan, along with another proposal to semi-legalize marijuana. We're gettin there...S L O W L Y....!!!
Linora
-
Lin- I don't think any of us who support keeping leiberman in his position like or respect him. Someone said if Obama is reaching across the aisle to republicans and wants to build a "
team of rivals) ala lincoln, it'd look bad to exclude him.I'm all for legalizing MJ, particularly for medicinal purposes.
what do you think about the leaks? I don't know whether this if A necessarily equals B, but these leaks did start with the Rahm Emanual's appointment. I think the leak proof campaign mode needs to be implemented ASAP.
And lastly, on the just desserts front...
Even if this is just a nuisance thing, there's no one more deserving of it.
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A resident of Gov. Sarah Palin's hometown has filed a complaint against her, saying she broke Alaska ethics rules.
Zane Henning of Wasilla says Palin improperly held national television interviews from the governor's office about her unsuccessful run as the Republican vice presidential nominee.
Henning says Palin promoted her future political career on state property
The governor's office says Palin was not a candidate at the time of the interviews.
Henning's complaint, filed Tuesday, asks the Alaska Personnel Board to investigate his claim.
Ethics complaints are confidential unless their targets waive confidentiality or allegations are found to have merit.

Calif. Supreme Court to take up gay marriage ban
Nov 19, 5:07 PM (ET)
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - California's highest court has agreed to hear legal challenges to a new ban on gay marriage, but is refusing to allow gay couples to resume marrying until it rules.
The California Supreme Court on Wednesday accepted three lawsuits seeking to overturn Proposition 8. The amendment passed this month with 52 percent of the vote. The court did not elaborate on its decision.
All three cases claim the ban abridges the civil rights of a vulnerable minority group. They argue that voters alone did not have the authority to enact such a significant constitutional change. -
Thanks laura- keep me posting anything else that comes up in case! From what I understand this was a no brainer, because these challenges were filed before the amendment was allowed on the ballots and the court basically punted and refused to hear them until after the bill was voted on.
-
Howdy ,
I had to make my way with my cwazy doc...ObamaPresident, but soon I will have reprieve with my return to original Medicare, a supplemental insurance and a new Onc.
I couldn't believe those auto-executives flying into Washington in a private jet. What Maroons!
The Republicans are in a let them eat cake mood and I can't fault them 100%, though I don't want a bankruptcy. I don't know the effects of a BK on the retirees pensions, their benefits and other perks so I worry about the people. I think Republicans are anti-union anyway. I am not sure what they're up too with the call for a Chapter 11 for the auto companies, but I am not in favor of it at all. I know K-Mart, Toys-R-Us and the airlines companies have filed but I am not happy to hear our car industry has bitten the dust.
I am so afraid of what more what happen with Bush in office...I've been afraid since Katrina...and I hope and pray his speedy departure. in January.
I'm watching a Jackie Kennedy documentary on PBS and reliving my youth. I wanted to BE Jackie Kennedy. I wore pill box hats...straightened my hair, pouffed it into a huge bouffant, wore A-line dresses and practiced speaking breathlessly.
I've never gotten over the assassination.
love to you all,
mina
-
Donna, thanks for the Garrison Keillor piece.
Amy, I didn't realize that Daschle had issues with the gay community. He's otherwise well-qualifed. I believe I predicted he would be picked for the post way back this summer. I still hope Bobby Kennedy gets EPA.
I'm totally confused about the auto bailout, but it looks like it's not going to happen anytime soon anyway. I've heard good arguments on both sides--bailout vs. bankruptcy. The fact that the execs want the bailout makes me suspicious of it, especially since they're showing up for the meeting in their private jets. Didn't they get the if-you-want-a-handout-don't-act-like-a-rich-bastard memo?
Another in the "just desserts" category: Focus on the Family is having to lay off a bunch of employees, partly due the $500,000 they put into supporting the doomed Prop 8.
For Earth, Wind and Fire/Obama fans:
-
I am glad they didn't give the auto guys their bailout!!! What a load of BS!!! As one of them said on the board "it's like showing up to a soup kitchen in a tuxedo" They need to suck it up on their end and maybe live like the rest of us!! I'm sick of my tax dollars going out to bail these idiots out so they can give them selves bonuses at the end of the year. How about a real plan???? How about telling us what they would do if they had this money, how they would change things? You don't just go to a job interview and expect they will give it to you because of who you are. You have to have some facts to back it up! If they go under, than so be it. But I'm sick of all this money going out just because. It makes no sense.

I'll agree that the auto industry execs acted like total asshats....
But... I live in Canada, in a town very dependent on the Big Three. My partner lives in Michigan--'nuff said. The economy here is in a tailspin already, with people laid off, pulling their pension funds out early to pay their mortgages, etc. I work in a church and we have been getting more and more requests for help with things like utility bills, medical bills, groceries...at a time when people are giving less to the church because they are scared their job will be next to go and thy will need that money. Granted the unions were so strong people thought their jobs would never go away and perhaps made some foolish financial decisions--but not everyone did, and many folks are losing everyhting. the foreclosure rate is very high in Michigan.
Even if someone doesn't work directly for the carmakers, there are suppliers (parts, paint, upholstery, etc.), transport companies, advertising agncies, even the delis and fast food places around the plants. Detroit's been pretty much on on a downward spiral since the late 60's and this may be the final blow. Michigan could well see Depression-type economics soon.
I wish there were a way to help the workers keep working and keep geting paid without the maroon execs getting any.
-
Well I don't know if I am right or not, but I say no bailout to the auto companies. Haven't bought an American car in years because they are made so poorly and just don't last! they all need to make a better product. Then flying to Washington in private $20,000 jets turned me off! No one bailed out the airlines. Many went bankrupt and they are still flying.
I think I read someone say the bailout money for the banks was put aside for the CEO's? If this is true, has nothing been learned here?
