    Dani - I certainly can't top that - unbelievable!

My friend was trying to be supportive and I totally understand where she was coming from and I love her.  I was home feeling like crap after having chemo two days prior - she called to ask how I was doing, I told her ok, just kinda icky. She said something to the effect that treating breast cancer these days is like getting a flu shot. ??? no, not really

I work in HR and we were talking about flexible spending accounts. My co-worker made a comment about "well breast implants aren't going to be covered" and of course she was referring to breast augmentation. But any time the topic of "breast implants" comes up I'm always on guard because mine of course are for reconstruction.

Someone brought up the fact that if you're scarred due to burns, for example, then plastic surgery is covered. I quietly mentioned that falls under "reconstruction" rather than "cosmetic."

But I didn't say anything else. Changes your whole outlook.

A local surgeon who performed my biopsy told me the day I was diagnosed that "DCIS was over my head I wouldn't understand what it meant."

I walked out of his office and never returned. Instead I went to a Breast Cancer Hospital. And I learned as much as I could about DCIS.

I find myself reading the obits sometimes - looking for BC.

I think when I go I want my obit to say I was killed by an ACME anvil that fell from the sky. Let people worry about THAT for a change! lol

the topper for me: in the locker room at work, i was itching my chest a bit, scar area,(no recon)  and a young female that was in the locker room said, hey, stop playing with your boobs, and i said i din't have any because i had them removed due to breast cancer.  she looked horrified and said:"you don't have tits,, you should become a lesbian then, because men like women with tits". and added," if i didn't have tits, i would become a lesbian".  OMG. i didn't know if i should laugh, or wack her in the head. like not having breasts, would turn me into a lesbian over night.. so i laughed it off, thinking she was just young and uninformed.. several months later, she said the same thing to me., only this time she said, you should become a lesbo,, so i turned to her and said, yea, great idea, want to be my girlfriend!  and left her there with her mouth hanging open,

after finding out that i had mastectomy with no recon, a male friend said, well," you probably won't miss them much, cause they were small ". yea, i said, and i guess you wouldn't miss your balls much either, you know, cause their so small..

him i can forgive, because i don't really think he knew what to say, but the woman, well, she will be stupid forever..

while i was "big, fat and bald," and feeling very self-conscious about the 40 pounds added since treatment began, i was looking at family photos with a very close relative, who i know wouldn't hurt me for the world.  but she came across one of me and said "just think...you'll never be pretty like that again."  it was a picture taken days before i was diagnosed, so it wasn't like she was looking at one that was 15 years old, referring to youth.

I HAD a good friend, whom I've always known to be a little self absorbed - always talking about her problems, etc.. When I told her about my bc I had to interrupt her & say " time out - I have something I would like to share w/ you" - after I told her, the first thing she said was " if it were me, I would have my old, ugly boobs cut off & big, new ones put on...you are sooo lucky! It 'll be sooo worth it in the end b/c you will come out looking sooo hot & sexy!"

Fortunately, I have always been able to be very upfront & honest w/ her...so I was able to tell her how that made me feel.

A couple of months later, she actually called me to see how I was doing - when I updated her on my surgeries, treatments, etc.. the first thing she said was, " Boy! you're life is nothing but a soap opera..."

    haven't spoken to her since.........

    Hi Ladies,

Just happened upon this thread and just have to say the stupidity of others never ceases to amaze me! I'm a smart a$$ so I usually try to beat snide folks to the punch before they can say anything. This past Christmas (a week after my exchange) my family had their annual get together where on of the 2 b---hy sister-in-laws came. One just had lapband surgery and was eating up all the attention about how much weight she'd lost (didn't need to loose but 40 pounds total and I can't for the life of me understand why a doc did that surgery but that's for another day). I didn't comment on her weight loss so she tried roping me into a conversation about losing weight and said "Wow Margaret you look great! Have you lost weight?" I looked at her, smiled and said "As a matter of fact I have...3 pounds on the left (mast side). She didn't say anything else. Yall have a good night!

About 2 weeks after my mast. (no recon) my mother went for her first (yes first) mammo.  She thought she felt "something".  So we are talking on the phone and she says, "I don't know what I would do if they found breast cancer.  I just would not want to live if I didn't have breasts."

Hello!!!!! Just had a mastectomy 2 weeks ago!!!!!!

I told my sister how disheartened I was shopping for a swimsuit after a mastectomy at the age of 36.  I am a D or DD and found it hard to find something to provide adequate cover without looking like it was designed for someone 30 years older than me.

My sister said "oh your so lucky to have big boobs, I find it so difficult to find anything nice because I am a B cup".

When I pointed out gently that this was upsetting for me as I had a breast missing, she said...

"Well you just don't understand how hard it is to have small breasts."

But hey, that's her, and she is my sister.

    Take care,

    Sandy

OMG...these stories are horrifying.  Four years ago at age 41...I was going thru treatment...surgery and radiation and Tamoxifen.  Five months after dx...I received a 3 out of 4 bad on my performance review.  All 3 were related to the fact that I could not travel during radiation and reports were late.  Up until this point, I had only told my bimbo of a boss about surgery and radiation.  So after the bad performance review (never had one before or since and yes I took it to the top and had it changed) she says..."I assume it was cancer?'  I nodded and she proceeded to tell me about their best friend had cancer, and how they stood by him thru all of the surgeries and treatments.  She sad they went thru this for 15 years...and then said..."he died".  Hello bimbo...might as well put a gun to my head.  I left the company a year later.

And it amazes me that four years later I still talk to friends or relatives that ask me how I am feeling.  What they really want to know is "how's your cancer situation?"

I was always small chested and over the years, ocassionally would talk about maybe getting a boob job, but then I would always chicken out. After I was dx'd, I told one of my friends that I had to have a Mast. she said, "well atleast now you'll get the boob job you've always wanted...and it will be free."

    Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

Ok, Maybe I can't top yours but, I believe my step MIL is officially the Village Idiot and here is why, I called my Grandmother in law to tell her I had cancer( She lives with my dh father and stepmother) and after telling her she put the Step MIL on the phone because she had had BC and thought it was a good idea I didn't as I knew she was stupid a long time ago however, this idot proceeded to tell me that I should have a lumpectomy instead of a bi-lat and how horrible a bi-lat was (keep in mind she had a lumpectomy) and if the only reason I was doing it was to get a set of Titties then she had no more to say to me as if I wanted her to say anything in the first place!!!! I a usually outspoken person was so totally taken aback by her ignorance and no compassion was deemed speechless however when my DH got home I had managed to tell him a few things lol poor guy. As if I got cancer to get a new set of girls come on buying a set would have been much cheaper not to mention easier than chemo. I can say for sure by the time my husband and I got through I don't think they will be coming for Holidays.LOL

Held:  I'm trying to find the Bible passage that says, "Let he who is without sin remain cancer free," but all I find is the "cast the first stone" one.

As she says "we know the bible tells us that illness is a direct result of sin".  I still haven't heard what she thinks about the fact that my epilepsy is genetic.  Would that be a result of the "sins of my father"

My hair was maybe an inch long and I had just gotten the nerve up to go without something on my head.  I went for my dental check-up and my dentist (who knew I had bc) told me I was looking rather "butchy" .

But I laughed.  I told him he was too dumb to be a Senator.  (He is also one of our Senators)

I also knew he lost a sister to breast cancer and his wife is a 15 year survivor, so I knew he was just kidding with me.  (I've known him 20+yrs)  He started an organization here in my area that will pay for wigs for women whose insurance wont pay or who dont have insurance coverage.  His organization bought my wig, so that gave him a "double" pass on the "butchy" comment. LOL

Speaking of hair, it makes me so mad when women say to me "your hair is so cute!", or " I LOVE your hair!" (These are women who know I had b/c)  I want to tell them if it is so freaking cute, I will be glad to accompany them to their next hair appointment so they can have thiers cut just like it.

My hair is maybe 1 1/2" long now and I cannot do any thing with it but gel and attempt some sort of "spikey" look.  I look like CRAP with short hair.  But if someone compliments me and I say "thanks, but I hate it" they get all mad at me!!!!!   I tell them that if I looked good with 1" long hair, I would have had 1" long hair BEFORE cancer!  UGHHHHHH

Am  I the only one sensitve about hair????
