Whoo-hoo!  Just heard on NPR that the Obamas are going to adopt a dog from a shelter.  My rescue pup and I are very happy.

Little-G, I know what you mean about taking health insurance for granted when you're not facing a serious illness.  Supposedly health care is going to be Congress' first priority come 2009.  It's going to be a tough battle.  We'll have to help keep their feet to the fire.

So the theme of the inauguration is going to be Lincoln's 200th anniversary.  How appropriate is that!

    Laurap,

People should understand what that NYT map represents, not the vote,  but the change in vote from a previous election.  The interactive map shows many of the states that appear completely blue as mostly red (like Michigan, Massachusetts, or Pennsylvania. If you look at the interactive map and the actual votes, you will see that the democrats come from urban areas or universities centers...and most of the red vote is rural.

I think what this map is showing that the urban, educated mindset is moving everywhere except Appalachia, or anyway, getting there the slowest.

LAP- did you hear some of the names people were coming up with for the dog?

    Bark Obama

    Lipstick (on a Pig)

    and some other ones.

ivy- I couldn't believe fox is turning on Palin-- I don't hold anything they say in high regard, but I do Newsweek so I believe how little she knows. You really can't make this stuff up. Role model? I think not.

Linora - Yes, indeed. I think the text under the map says : "The redder the area the more people shifted towards republicans. The bluer the area, the more people shifted towards the Democrats."

What the map says to me is how successful Obama's 50 state plan worked.Laughing

Tracey, congratulations to Virginia for going blue!   Will you be able to go to D.C. in January?

Obama has a new website up for anyone who's interested in submitting ideas, or stories about the election.  Some of you ladies had great stories you could add to the virtual scrapbook.

    http://www.change.gov/

Don't you love the transparency?  No more secret cabals!

Amy, I hadn't seen the suggested names for the puppy.  I like Bark, although that might get confusing in the WH.  I suspect Malia and Sasha will be doing the naming.

LAP- I think Barack might have veto power over the suggestion--- I doubt he's want the distraction of calling the puppy palin---- "palin, stop humping the table....." that would be unfortunate Wink.

    LAphoenix,

I was so proud of VA for speaking clearly about the direction they want this country to go in. And I have never been more proud to be from VA and to also be an American. I went to 2 of his local visits and I would not miss the trip to DC on Jan 20th for the world!! I am still on a high, and in amazement at what we can accomplish when we get together and push forward for a common goal, and that goal was change!! It really makes me believe that, "yes we can!" WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tracey- so glad you're coming Jan 20th! I know what you mean about being proud. Palin and MCain were all over PA, we had robo-calls and McCainiacs saying horrible racial things. PA has been blue for a while and I was thrilled that Obama/Biden kicked the asses of McCain/Palin despite all the money their poured into my state. Yes we can. Yes we did. Yes we will form that more perfect union.

    Hi Obama Girls!

I just checked that website that Laura put up!!  That is awesome!!  I posted my own comments there, along with the MANY others!!!  It is going to take a while for the people who were not behind him to wake up and loose their old prejudice ways.  Even my niece called me today and said, I bet you are happy.  I told her I was elated and cried when it was official.  She said she was worried, and I asked her why and she said because she thinks Barack is going to favor black people.  sigh....I said I can't believe you are saying that.  This is not about being black, or white, or any other color.  This is about fixing what is so clearly wrong with this country!!  This is about learning to trust each other!!  This is about moving forward with what has been stagnant for so long!  This is about working together as a country!!  I asked her if she listened to Barack speak, and of course, she did not.  I said even a blind person, literally blind, can hear that this man is the real deal.  And the fact that he has a black father and a white mother, to me brings all worlds together!!  My niece is of lower income level and her SO is an Asian man and their own child is "mixed."  It is incredible how people choose to look at everyone elses "differences" and not their own. Those "differences" are indeed what brings us together, as we are more alike than some would like to admit.  Wow...we have a long way to go people.  I am just so happy for this giant step for all of us!!!  I know we will be behind Barack all the way thru this journey!!  I'm still on cloud 9!!!!

    g

PS..what time does Barack speak today?  BTW...so far the DOW is up today!  :-)

Obama's first news conference was superb!! He rocked it. With 17 people behind him, all having met w/him earlier. He was calm, cool and collected. He didn't let the news media questions rattle him one bit. AND, in fact, he declined to answer some in a very straight up manner without any apology. Barack Obama is going to be one of the finest Presidents this country has ever been fortunate to have at the helm.

After hearing about all the job losses in October--49K in construction, 18K in sales, etc. All of the jobs appear to be of the blue collar variety. Certainly tells the story of where the current president places importance on some people--definitely doesn't give a hoot about the lower and middle classes. I will be doing the happy dance when Bush leaves the WH for good. Let's hope there is never another Bush in the WH. I hope they all stay in Texas forever.

Prop 8 is not going to hold up. I just know it will be challenged. It's hard to believe that people in this state would vote for this proposition. All the ads were lies. It was a disgusting yes campaign as far as I'm concerned. I didn't know there were that many stupid Californians in this state. Just the words alone used in the yes campaign: protect, restore---blah, blah. How anyone could think that "traditional" marriage was somehow threatened. Defies logic!

Blundin--loved reading your thoughts from Italy--really moved me and had tears in my eyes.

Oh, forget who posted the Gail Collins article--really enjoyed that!

Was just announced a short while ago--Palin will speak on Monday to address the comments being made about her and the campaign. Hmmmm......this should be a doozy.

Happy day to all and have a great weekend--we are expected to have rain, so will be quilting away and listening to the politics on TV!

Just wanted to add this to the comments about the thread "over there" and racism:

"There is a strange kind of enigma associated
with the problem of racism.  No one, or almost
    no one, wishes to see themselves as racist;
still racism persists.  Albert Memmi, Racism

My friend who recently passed away from lung cancer used this quote for her email signature.

To me it sums up what has been happening in this country since the Civil War (and although some say that with this election--"the Civil War" is finally over--I really don't think so--I take a wait and see attitude!

I went to my friend's memorial service yesterday. It was so beautiful and moving. The altar was filled to the brim with memories of our dear friend and colleague. It is hard to accept that she will never hug me again or look at me intently as she listens to what I have to say. I'm a little sad today. Death is so final. I realize that I must make the most of what time I have in this space called earth. And yes, I do have great memories of our times together. She will always have a place in my heart.

Awww grace, I know how hard today must have been.

Your friend's email signature is touching. Why even go over that thread with all the racist remarks. It's  upsetting to know that there are bigots among us, but we don't have to give them attention.  I would hope that those republicans who see what the worst offenders are saying will comment about it...reminds me of the Edmund Burke quote "all that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing"  There are bad people and hypocrites in all walks of life, unfortunately this place is no exception. Being defensive or seeming to brag and excuse bias is easier than taking a look at themselves. Everyone has some prejudice, but most of us are self aware enough to realize what they are and to work to better ourselves, but that's a lot harder than blaming others and being defensive.  I think it's better to ignore the prejudiced people here and not give their hate any attention. It's the same people and we can only try to explain things so many times.

I thought the news conference was good. Obama seemed a little nervous and stuttered a bit as he did in his first debate. He'll be fine. I was impressed to see the variety of voices who will be weighing in on his economic policies. He always said he wants people who will disagree with him and that just shows how bright he is.  I loved his dry wit and intellectual sense of humor in the way he answered the dog question as if it were a political decision and his off the cuff remark about not having seances like Nancy Reagan. I think we can be fairly sure Michelle won't have an astrologer on her staff or consult with psychics. Obama didn't mention Ford, I wonder if he's not doing well, he's in his mid 90s.

Newsweek sounds like it's going to be a good one. I can't wait to see Sarah Palin's political obituary.  I guess it's a coin toss whether this is worse for Palin or the McCain campaign. I suppose some people will feel sorry for her, but I think she reaped what she sowed.  She was beyond brutal in her baseless attacks and lies about Obama. Now she knows what it's like to have people she tries to push around push back. I don't doubt that some on the right will feel sorry for her--- heck there were about 25% of republicans thought she was competent and are probably still defending her lack of knowing much of anything. She seems to think the rest of America is as dumb as most of the alaskans are in believing her answers as true, just because she says them.

You are so right, Amy. I'm just amazed at how ignorant some people can be when it comes to race and prejudice. I guess I try too hard to educated people--even when they ask for information or how to learn more, they continue to blast the people trying to help them learn about racism and other cultures. I guess I miss the educational environment more than I thought. Going back to the college yesterday was bittersweet. I miss my female and male (a couple) colleagues, but not the political battles that were waged every day. At least the company I kept was educated and intelligent when it comes to diversity and multiculturalism. That's why it is so important that as many young people as possible go to college and earn degree(s). I did talk to the director I worked under, and she is retiring in June 09. We plan to get together and work on a book idea we have related to white women and women of color. A project I can really sink my teeth into!!

I laughed when he said a shelter dog, like me, a mutt. That's what we all are, right? In fact, I talked to some friends several days ago, and we were discussing the idea of doing a cheek swab and having the DNA analyzed and that if we did so, we probably would find some "non-white" blood. We all had to come from somewhere, and most likely started in Africa--and as we moved north our skin got lighter because we didn't need the protection from the sun.

I'm hoping that the remarks made on the other thread can be counted on one hand, and are not indicative of the population at large. It's interesting that what started out as support for one candidate who loses the election, turns into what appears on the surface to be support for the candidate who won; when there is an undercurrent of complete lack of support for the president elect--it's the subversive rather than the upfront that is so evident, and yet they seem to think no one notices.

Well, I'm off to make some gumbo. It's Friday night, and the whole weekend is ahead of us!

This is supposed to be the Positive Obama thread, and he won the election, so why do people here continue to attack Sarah Palin?  In the past few months this woman has been pregnant, given birth (and we know how the sudden ebb and flow of hormones can throw you for a loop) to a special needs baby, sent her oldest child off to war, discovered that her teenage daughter is pregnant, that she will soon be a grandmother, and left small town Alaska to run for office in the glare of the national media.  Let's cut the woman a break!  Talk about a stress overload, no wonder she made a gaffe or two.  Wouldn't you have under the circumstances?

If not, please run for office soon, because the country really needs perfect people like you to run it!

As for troopergate, why isn't this guy behind bars for felony child abuse after tasering Palin's nephew?  Forget about keeping his job and state issued weapon!  He made threats against a sitting governor and her family and actually physically attacked one of them with a potentially deadly weapon.

As for the excuse that it's only a domestic dispute, please explain how that makes it okay to all the women who have died at the hands of a husband whose divorce wasn't coming fast enough, or going the way he wanted on the custody front etc.

Obama won, therefore almost everything that he does continues to affect everyone in this country, so he will continue to be a topic just like W still is, at least until January 20th.

I sure hope that there won't be constant labeling of everyone as racist for the next 4 years...on either side.

I just checked the other thread, and frankly I thought that your explaination of why he refers to himself as African-American was spot on...so why did you feel the need to attack me here when I wasn't the one who wrote the things you object to?

PatMom, I think in a way you answered your own question with your first paragraph.  No one was holding a gun to Palin's head telling she had to run for VP at that very busy, very stressful time in her life.  She said she didn't hesitate to say yes when asked.  Did she consult with her kids about the effect it would have on their lives?  I don't know.  She's obviously ambitious, which is fine, but as soon as she agreed to run, she became fair game for media scrutiny, particularly as she was an unknown figure and didn't go through the vetting process of primary elections.  McCain selected her, the voters didn't, and she was auditioning for an extremely important job.  If she didn't know what she was about to get into, she was very naive.  Many others have declined to run for national offices, or take national posts, because they don't want to subject themselves and their families to the media microscope.

And as far as gaffes go . . . remember Howard Dean?  His whole run for president went down the toilet because of one unfortunate yell.  National politics is a cruel business, and only the smartest and toughest survive.

I prefer candidates who are very knowledgeable, at least about government and the big issues of the day.  Palin didn't demonstrate much in the way of knowledge, and apparently, she wasn't inclined to do much studying.  It's not about her I.Q. or even her education.  It's about her willingness and desire to learn and to admit what she doesn't know.  I get that her fans don't think that having knowledge and intellectual curiosity are that important, but for us Dems, they are important.  Therefore, we don't think she's an impressive public servant, and we don't think she deserved to hold the second highest office in the land.  Personally I found the ease with which she vamped and bluffed her way through interviews and debates insulting and ridiculous.  I don't want a VP or president who's just like me; I want someone who's harder working and smarter.

And then there's the negative way she campaigned.  Even more than McCain she stoked fear and hatred in her supporters.  Unlike McCain, she never told them to stop, or corrected their misconceptions.  I'm sure that's part of reason McCain and his staff apparently came to dislike her (that and her propensity to go rogue).  I would feel sorry for him in that regard, except that he was the one who picked her.

I also disagreed with her stands on most issues, but in a way that's besides the point.  If McCain had chosen Huckabee, whose views I also disagree with, I'd probably not be wishing him back to Arkansas right now.  Huckabee appeals to the same religious conservatives, but at least he's  articulate, knowledgable and likable.  Yeah, I kinda like Huckabee!

Troopergate was about whether Palin used her office improperly to resolve a personal, family matter.  Period.  It wasn't about domestic abuse.  If it were about that, charges should have been pressed by the sister.  If he made threats against Palin, why did she refuse extra security or not have him arrested?  How would having him fired resulted in more safety for the sister?  Wouldn't being unemployed have made it more difficult for him to make child support payments?  Monegan was a well-respected, competent employee who couldn't justify firing the ex based on the evidence Palin presented him.  Why was Monagan punished?  I think you're conflating two different issues.

And Palin told prosecutors that she demoted Monegan for something entirely different.  She knew (because Monegan himself had told her) that all the phone calls and emails about her BIL crossed the ethics line, so she lied that it was really about Monegan's use of travel funds.  But Palin revealed herself when she called the scandal "Tasergate."  If Monegan was demoted for unauthorized travel, and not because of the BIL, as she officially stated, why did she mention the taser incident?   She can't have it both ways.

Palin was a very controversial figure in this election.  She did supply lots of drama, but I'm glad she isn't going to Washington, and I don't feel sorry for her.  And I don't think she's feeling all that sorry for herself.  She's going to keep fighting and will no doubt try to make a comeback.  She didn't earn the nickname Sarah Barracuda for nothing.

Hi, ladies. This is the email I sent to my friends the day after the election:

Last night I had the strangest dream. I dreamt that a man of reason, intelligence, and compassion was elected to the White House. It was odd. And there were people thronging the streets and crying for joy. So strange...fireworks lit up the night sky. And the weirdest thing--the man we elected--he was an African American. Isn't that wild? And for the first time in 8 years, a bunch of us went to sleep with hope and peace in our hearts rather than a nagging anxiety and a plague of "What if"s and "Why can't we"s and "Will we ever"s. And we felt like we were ready to work together, and that he would LISTEN to us. That was maybe the strangest thing of all.

    Oh, wait a minute--that really happened! ***************

I think November 4th was the happiest day of my life. Seriously. I've been laughing and crying since then. I didn't know till Obama won just how hopeless and depressed I had begun to feel as a result of the Bush administration's actions and--more than that--their lack of accountability. Not to be melodramatic, but it shook my faith in God, seeing that man get away with the things he's gotten away with.

As someone said to me yesterday, "The sun is shining a little brighter now." I'm looking forward to the next four years.

I don't feel sorry for Palin at all.  I heard on the news that 60% of the exit polls agreed she was not Vice President material.  Heck, I don't even know how she became Governor of Alaska.  She abused her power and got off scott free.  There were so many others who would have been a great choice for VP by McCain.  Even the Republicans are shedding light on that now.  The negativity that was spewed by the McCain camp was disgusting and SP was a big part of that.  Idol?  Never!  Joke?  You betcha!

I'm thrilled about Obama.  When I see him talking, he makes me smile.

I suggest we continue to ignore trolls on this thread.

I agree that Palin is no role model for women--- except perhaps in what they shouldn't do. Palin's last few months are better used as a cautionary tale for boys and girls on what happens when somebody doesn't learn much in school, attends 6 colleges to eke out a degree, doesn't listen to the advice of those more learned and experienced etc. She wouldn't be governor in any other state but alaska, because the "lower 48" and hawaii--- just like  no other state would elect someone who was found guilty of 7 felonies the previous week. I am embarrassed for those who set the bar so low for what they want in their role models. Women are can do anything they want to do if they are competent and able. To raise a woman who is neither as a role model shows a lack of understanding of the difference between token woman vs. capable woman. McCain chose the former when there were many of the latter who were more qualified.

nicki- Reports are now saying Palin's negativity was another example of her "going rogue/rove" and not McCain's idea. Still, he should have been a better manager in stopping that.

grace- when certain ignorant people ask for information on how they can learn more, it's not to learn more but attempts to refute common knowledge. Fortunately most people are genuine in their desire to better themselves and open minded detracters will come around to a place of respect, if not approval for our president.

Speaking of racism, I was looking for a particular gif image of obama on the web and when I googled his name there were more racist drawings than not. Pictures of Obama with exaggerated large lips--- not cartoons but photoshopped images. I was disgusted.

I'm thrilled at the outlook for how the election of Obama in itself has restored some of our esteem in the world and given people across the planet hope for a better future. Even fighting factions in Iraq are ready to sit down, now that we have a president who wants to stay out of their business.
