Positive Obama thread

By the way, I think Michelle Obama will be a most wonderful first lady (but what was up with that dress last night?) She seems like such a loving, genuine person. But with a steel backbone.
And Sasha and Malia are probably picking out their puppy as we speak!

Good Morning Fellow Obama Girls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I couldn't get in to the chat room last night, WTH??? Anyway, congratulations to, well, EVERYONE!!!!! What a night!!! What country!!! I was looking at news reports fropm around the worls and they had pictures and video of so many countries in Europe, Asia everywhere....people all over the world are dancing in the streets....one woman ( I think in Japan) said that she was hopeful that the old "confrontational" US is gone for good and that peace is what they are all looking for...
Loved McCain's concession speech. This was the McCain I remembered liking....I think this was the McCain people were hoping to see. I believe that he will try to work with the new Administration as he stated.
On another note, Palin (thankfully) didn't get to say a word.
Going outside to put my flag up!
-
oh happy day obama girls!
just hung my flag and it is waving proud. i am so proud of our great country!
change has come to america!
Barack Hussein Obama, the 44th President of the United States
i have faith that the country can work together to make the the change we need to return this country to greatness.

Some random thoughts and observations:
I cried last night, and as usual, my sinuses are all screwed up this morning...lol
I went to sleep at 1:30 am finally, and I woke up at 6 am - too excited to sleep!
Maybe it's my imagination, but it seemed like everyone I passed on the street this morning (in Houston no less) was smiling, and the mood in the office is so upbeat!
My most conservative friend in the world is actually happy this morning, too
I have already made reservations to be in DC for the inauguration!
-
YEP....We sure did! I was so proud....Once that happened I relaxed....No Republican has ever won without us....Even Hamiltion County went Blue, and that's saying something...
-
Such a happy day in the USA. And I must say I'm so proud of Virginia.......I love the color Blue .........
Hope the girls love their puppy

Good morning, Obama ladies! I feel so out of the loop here, but I was working the polls from 6AM to 10PM. What a glorious day! Don't have words -- too tired and overwhelmed. The polling place where I was working (which is also where I vote) is in a Masonic Center, whose members are an odd mix of older white men and Philippinos. I had always assumed it was a conservative organization. But after the polls closed at 8, we turned on the TV where we were counting ballots and such. It was Fox (ugh), but as word spread that Obama had clinched it, all these Philippine women streamed in to the polling area and were expressing their joy. They gathered around the TV with their kids and grandkids and were watching his acceptance speech with rapt attention. One woman shouted, "Look, Oprah's crying!" It was a funny, wonderful sight.
On the down side, one of the poll workers was a raging conservative. The rest of us kept our mouths shut all through the day, but this woman spewed her angry, negative views to everyone. You know, he's a socialist, he's a Communist, he's a Marxist. I don't like his wife. She's going to say something that will embarrass us to the world (that was a new one). Blah blah blah. It was irritating and oh so familiar, but the rest of us had the last and best laugh, so who cares?
LuAnn, I'm sorry you're not feeling well. Great that you were able to vote. And loved your story about your daughter-in-law. Hope you start feeling better soon.
PatMom, thanks for the congratulations. I thought McCain's concession speech, as much as I heard of it, was excellent.
I have to get to work, but I just wanted to say thanks to all of you for making this election that much more fun. Sweet potato pie and the stars and stripes, here we come!
-
Somebody PLEASE remind me to stay the heck away from the repub thread. I kept my distance for three weeks (wouldn't have been able to read much anyway thanks to the "ignore" button), but this morning my curiosity got the best of me. What is up with the fear and "sinking feelings"? If electing the same chucklehead twice that nearly ran this country into the ground didn't give anyone a cast-iron stomach, nothing will...
Good Lord - enough of the hand-wringing and "I hope we did the right thing" stuff. Barack Obama will be every American's president whether you voted for him or not. Now quit your belly aching and move on already...
-
Felicia............do not go near the repub thread!!! Back away from that button!!! :-) You don't think they are going to let all that anger float away over night do you? It would be nice, but I doubt it. I am so freakin' happy this morning!!!!!!!!!!! When watching a snippet of his speech again, I started crying again! It's really overwhelming. I can't understand anyone that does not feel the connection with this man. As it is so strong!!! And so positive and so hopeful!!! We're not going to get this done over night, but the majority of us are willing to do what we need to do! If Barack calls on us, we'll be right there, just like we were thru the last months!! There's going to be those that continue to spew out anger. Let's concentrate on the rest of us that came together no matter what our back grounds are!!! We on this board in the beginning only had BC that bought us together, and thru this journey, even though we are all over the place, and have very different lives, we all came together for the cause of our country and because of Barack Obama!!! And if that happened in our little circle, imagine all the little circles out there! And now...turn it into one big circle and let's change things around!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OBAMA '08....IT IS HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Felicia: I won't even look on that thread because NO ONE is going to rain on my parade today! It's not like Obama "squeaked by " in his win.....it was decisive, commanding and welcomed by the world at large. I hope that those who did not support Obama's candidacy will keep an open mind and support what our new president will try to do. As he said last night " we are not blue states or red states, we are the UNITED STATES of AMERICA".
I think he is going to be a GREAT president.....
I have been reading quotes of congratulatory statements from leaders around the world....it's amazing!
As I said in an earlier post, McCain's concession speech was the McCain I knew and liked before. I couldn't help but notice the "cool" b-bye handshake he gave Palin and her husband and then quickly turned away. She ended up being a BIG liability for him (not to mention self-serving) Anyway, hopefully she will be gone back to Alaska for good. I won't miss that voice one bit!
Oh what a great day this is!!!!! Stay away from negative thrreads...it's all good!!!!

Looking at it in color.... state by state

I haven't gone into the repub thread, but any republicans who want to share the joy of the what this win means for the country and talk positively about the win are welcome. I've been crying off and on since last night. I'm believe with this election we have transcended race by the majority of american voters. I've heard so many older blacks say they never thought they'd live to see this day, invoking MLK and Rosa Parks and their parents and grandparents and ancestors who were slaves. I've seen people from all walks of life, even those who voted for McCain recognize that as a country we have sent a message to the world about equality.
I never met a black person until I graduated from college-- except for a few from barbados in undergrad because there weren't any within 100 miles of where I lived. The only thing I knew of blacks were what I read in the history books (that they were slaves and MLK) and saw on tv. My first real "education" of black history was the miniseries Roots and reading Alex Haley's book. The little town outside of Scranton is integrated now, just like the white house and America. The next presidential election might see whites being minorities in America-- what a wonderful world.
The day was not perfect, because in California, due to a lot of money from mormons for negative ads, it looks like our marriage rights may be taken away and my heart breaks for all those my GLBT community who have been devestated by this decision. Additionally FL and AZ banned marriage and just as bad Arkansas banned gay adoption. My country that came so far last night failed to provide that equality to my GLBT brothers and sisters, their families and in Arkansas children waiting in foster care to be adopted, will have a longer wait because the GLBT families are prevented from adopting them. That is very disturbing to me.
-
I have been on the repub thread and in all honesty they are just passionate about their candidate just as we are about ours. I haven't been on today but last night everyone was very gracious and congratulating barack on his victory. They are weary but if McCain won we would feel the same way.
I also have to say that John McCain showed a very nice side of himself last night. He gave a very gracious speech and was so good to stop the crowd boo's and let them know that barack obama is person the people elected into office and he deserves the respect that comes with the position. I am sure not all agreed with that but it was a very very nice speech and I was extremely impressed considering the angry man I saw all the way through the campaign.
I really hope most of you all can mend fences and get back to the business of breast cancer which is what brought us all here in the first place.

Hey, listen to what I just saw! I just came from CVS (the pharmacy round the corner from my office in downtown Washington DC). As I walked in, I noticed an unusual line of people. The funny thing is that the line was huge: it went along the whole front of the store, then turned and continued along the left side, reached the back of the store, turned again and went all the way along the back wall. I didn't count, but it must have been no less than 60 people. At first I thought that it was the line to check out, but then I noticed the people were not holding any purchases, so I asked. "It's for the paper," they said. "What paper?" "The Post."
What was happening is, the Washington Post ran out this morning and they are bringing out a new edition, and all those people were waiting in line to get their issue! It threw chills down my spine.
-
lza- I was dragging too much to get a paper today and now it's too late, I'm so disappointed.
luann- I really don't think you're right about the repubs being just as passionate about McCain, I think their passion was more anti obama than anything. Very few republicans were passionate about McCain and even fewer about Palin. There's a big difference between for a candidate and voting with one's heart against the other candidate rather than having passion for the candidate of choice. I'm mostly voted against Bush in 2000 and 2004, and in those losses all of my passion was against Bush and not for my candidates, not that I disliked either Kerry or Bush.
-
Luann, I was bothered by the boos by the crowd when McCain mentioned Obama by name. Sure, he was gracious enough to put his hands up in protest, but the boos were still there. That was quite upsetting to me...
And I have been on the repub thread today. I found people talking about sinking feelings and hoping the idealistic Dems are happy since we got our cure-all. That's not a bit leary, that's creepy to me. Sure I sulked in 00 and again in 04, but Bush was my president, too. I didn't agree with him or like his politics/actions very much at all, but I don't recall predicting doom and gloom (although we got that anyway). So, stay away from that thread, I will - and while I visit the other threads, my ignore button will remain on (trust me, for some, it was on waaaay before the campaign threads even started). I treat family that rubs me the wrong way in the same manner: just because we share something in common (blood with them, BC here), doesn't mean I have to invite you to dinner, so to speak.
And Amy, I am soooo upset about Prop 8 in CA, the AZ and FL ban on gay marriages and especially about backwards-butt Arkansas banning gay adoptions. The same "us" and "them" tone ussed to discuss these issues was also used in 1919 regarding women's sufferage, in the 40s when Japanese interment camps were the norm and again in the mid-60s during the civil rights movement. Feels like one step forward was taken and another back. Enough already...
-
Okay, not happy about the prop 8 passing in CA - WTF??? I have to say that I was very upset about having to sign a "I am not gay" statement to adopt my daughter from a very Catholic Guatemala but here in the good old U S of A this should not be happening. Grrrr!
I, too, thought McCain's speech (what few snipets I did catch) was good but I was VERY upset about the "boo's" from his supporters. Again, WTF??? He had to "shush" them more than once! Sore losers? I swear some people are just more tolerant than others.....
As I stated elsewhere, most all other countries around the world are in support of Obama and have high hopes for his presidency. This is a GOOD thing for us and for the rest of the world.
-
p.s. to Amy:
I have a newspaper from Manchester, England, with Obama's pic on the front, smiling and waving with the caption "President For Change." Do you want it? Granted, it's not the Post, but.....
-
I have a friend that works at the convience store up the street and she grabbed my newspaper for me that I wanted to save!
As for the boo's they were uncalled for but they were from the people and not McCain. At least he shusshed them and didn't pause to encourage more like he did during the campaign. I went to the repub thread after I read here this morning and I just let it go. Some people will not change their way of thinking no matter what.
I am just thrilled that we are going to have a younger mind in the white house instead of the older minds we normally have. It used to be thought that as you aged you became wiser but that isn't necessarily the case anymore. There is too much going on in this world that younger and more innovated minds might be a huge breakthough that has long been needed. I am definitely tired of the bush regimes and trickle down thinking. The only thing trickling did was lose alot of people their homes, jobs and lives!
-
thanks felicia-- I just have a hard time understanding with California being one of the most progressive states how all that hate could be there for us. Half a century ago it was not legal to for blacks and whites to marry each other in some states, now that seems barbaric. I hope that I am alive to see our marriages recognized in all 50 states. Obama has said he is for equal rights for us under the constitution and I hope he does something about that in his first 100 days- we have a majority in the house and senate and even if marriage is too far a reach, I want my GLBT bros and sisters to have all of the same rights that everyone else has, even if I don't want to get married or adopt children in arkansas.
jaybird- I would be thrilled to have the paper, I will pay you for postage. Thank you so much. People should realize that most gays come from parents who are straight and most gay parents have straight kids. Keep your laws off my body and out of my bedroom.
luann- McCain and Palin baited those boos since the beginning of the campaign season. McCain never stopped the boos before and only once said that Obama wasn't an arab, he was a christian and a good family man. Had obama been giving the concession speech, he would have not only shushed the crowd but also reminded the people why McCain is a great american. I don't throw ticker tape parades for doing the right thing. I'm also thrilled to have a younger, more progressive person in the white house and I hope that even those who didn't vote for Obama can see the wisdom of that thinking soon.
-
Listening to Obama's speech last night I didn't notice any boos coming from the crowd when he congratulated McCain on his campaign.
-
Obama's crowd clapped when McCain's name was mentioned blue--- even after how badly the campaign treated our candidate, particularly those robo calls and 527s that weren't reigned in. We took Obama's lead and treated McCain with respect.
Obama girls- do we need a new thread to start planning our trip to DC or can we do it on this one?
OMG- have you heard Palin saying it was McCain's loss and not hers and it wasn't her fault--- blaaaaaaah- can't she go silently back to Alaska where she can be free to call cancer survivors who are political oponents "cancers...."
-
Amy: Isn't she gone YET???? Get on the plane already....
-
Amy, PM me your address or P O box and I'll send it to you when I get back to Chicago, no charge. The paper was actually free and I'm more than happy to send it to you no charge. The article doesn't 'say' much put the picture is worth a thousand words. The newspaper is the size of the NY post. If I get anything else that's good enough to send along on my way back to the States I'll send that, too.
-
Amy, where is this article...curousity is getting me and I have to see this ultimate idiot!
As for my comments about the speech last night, apparently I am not able to get my point across properly in writing (probably too many drugs) so it is best to let it rest.
-
I was googling to find what you were talking about but found this article to be quite interesting http://www.newsweek.com/id/167581 I have a feeling when everything is said and done Sarah Palin's political career will be totally over. Either that or she will make another wonderful corrupt washington politician.
-
lu- I heard it from the horses mouth on CNN or msnbc-- I've been switching back between the two for the last few hours. sorry....
-
Ok--- watching MSNBC-- Caroline Kennedy is in line for UN ambassador!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shes's such a sophisticated, intelligent, articulate woman not to mention the kennedy legacy! The cabinet and other posts should be so exciting. He's going to chose bipartisan people--- excellence first, party 2nd.
-
What an amazing historic event for all of us and the USA!! I just cried, and was so moved by seeing Jesse Jackson at Grant Park crying with two of his fingers over his mouth--like he was speechless. This was just a wonderful evening and we all did it!!
Yes, I'm really pissed about Prop 8 in CA. Northern California is very liberal, but unfortunately we have Southern California which is very much retired military and very conservative people. For years we northern CA people have stated numerous times that CA should be divided in 1/2!!
But, I don't believe that Prop 8 will stand when it's appealed (and we know it will be--sure the ACLU is already preparing the case--and I was told by a friend of mine that those who married BEFORE Prop 8 goes into effect, those marriages will stand. So, I know the law and appeals courts are not going to let a Prop stand that discriminates against one group of people, or allow a prop to stay that sets up a tiered system--with some having legal marriages and others prevented from having a legal marriage. Evidently the Mormon organization put millions of $$ into getting this passed. That prop should have been defeated. Grrrrr!! The one sour note on a glorious election day.
I sat w/my 81 year old mother watching the returns. She said she never thought in her wildest imagination that she would live to see an African American (or bi-racial) President of our country. She wouldn't watch any of the news in the afternoon. I think she was afraid that we would be disappointed--but I have talked to many "older" people who voted for Obama. They just didn't like McCain's policies.
I was in the local grocery store this afternoon. The young lady who helped me get my bags into the car was talking to me about the election. She wasn't old enough to vote in this election, but she put in a 16 hr day at a polling site because she was so inspired by Obama to get involved. Here is one example of young students and first time voters who are actually excited about the election, and are inspired to get involved in politics to help make changes in this country.
The tide is turning, and I think there will be a tsunami of positive changes in this country. It is time, we have waited for 8 long years for this to happen. AND NOW IT'S HERE!!! I pinched myself, and I'm awake so I know it is real. I just marvel at what the people of this country have accomplished for this election, and how it will change my granddaughter's life for the better.
Can't wait to see who will be in his cabinet. He reminds me very much of Lincoln and his term in office. I think Obama will surpass him though.
Sweet Dreams all.
-
Amy...if you come across a link to the Palin story, I'd love to see it! And I do get what you're saying about McCain. He pretty much "raised" that crowd that he had, and encouraged the anger. So..trying to hush them at that point was to little to late. LuAnn..good article on the clothes!! That entire campaign was a mockery! I really loved Plain's face last night!! Good stuff! I hope we never hear from her again. Although probably not likely. She'll be bought up on some other charges of misuse and abuse sometime. This is all still so awesome!!! What a very happy day!!!!
