I got this email that made me laugh: I hope it wasn't already posted on this thread, it's gotten so long.

I'm a little confused. Let me see if I have this
    straight:

If you grow up in Hawaii, raised by your
    grandparents, you're "exotic, different."
If you grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, that's a
    quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you're a radical, unpatriotic
Muslim. Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, you're a
    maverick.

Graduate from Harvard Law School and you are unstable.
Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating and
    you're well-grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a brilliant community organizer,
create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new
voters, spend 12 years as a constitutional law professor,
spend 8 years as a State Senator, representing a district
with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state
Senate's Health and Human Services committee, are
elected to 4 years in the United States Senate representing
a state of 13 million people and sponsor or co-sponsor 131
bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and
Public Works and Veteran's Affairs committees, you
don't have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the
city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with fewer
than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with
only 650,000 people, then you're qualified to become the
    country's second highest ranking executive

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years
while raising 2 daughters, you're not a real Christian

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and
left your first wife and married the heiress the next month,
you're a Christian. If you teach responsible, age
appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth
control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If , while governor, you staunchly advocate abstinence
only, with no other option in sex education in your
state's school system and then your unwed teen daughter
ends up pregnant , you're very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a
high-paying job in a good law firm to work for the
betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to
raise a family, your family's values don't represent
     America's.

If your husband [nickname "First Dude"], sports
at least one DWI conviction and didn't register to
vote until he was 25 but did belong to a group that
advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA, your family
    is extremely admirable.

     OK, much clearer now.

Amy it was Anneshirley that said I hated science which I thought was so funny...........many on the left believe that all on the right defy science such as believing in creation........not all on the right think science is evil...........so yes it was just humor.............Iza I do understand that many believe that conception is not life or not sustain life..........but then when does a group of human cells become life?..........at quickening liked they used to believe in the old days.........at 40 days past conception?............when a mother first feels the baby move?.............babies are being born earlier and earlier and living.........so the questions is when does the soul enter the body?.........my daughter and I were just discussing this (she is a 20 year old liberal) and she said when the baby has cognitive development........but then there are babies that are born that are alive that have no cognitive activity.......that doesn't mean that they don't have life............so again I was just addressing Sandy because her post confused me..............I always thought that pro lifers believed that life began at conception (cell division)..........and believe me Iza I know that my belief is in the minority............I am not saying who is right or who is wrong just trying to be consistent............Shokk

Wading into this topic with trepidation...

Shokk - I just have to ask, what exactly would change about abortion rights if McCain gets elected?  Do you seriously think he is going to get the SCOTUS to reverse Roe v Wade?

On the other hand, if Obama gets elected, I can guarantee that no one who is anti-choice will be forced to have an abortion.

Now, a hypothetical that I would love to hear your thoughts on:  If abortion became illegal tomorrow, and a woman is found guilty of having one a week from now, what punishment should she receive?  If abortion is intentional murder, as the anti-choice camp seems to believe, I assume we should put the woman on death row?

    just sayin...

Unfortunately abortion will not become illegal tomorrow nor I do not believe it will ever become illegal again..........the best I personally could hope for is that it be left up to individual states as far as they would chose to have abortion legal or not........hypothetically what punishment would be appropriate........the cost of human life..........interesting......let's see first trimester a misdemeanor, second trimester man slaughter, late term or baby is born alive even after an attempted abortion then murder.............sorry djd I really don't mean to be a bitch and to be honest I'm not sure how to answer your question because like I said before I doubt that it will ever be illegal again even if we had a Republican president and a Republican congress and a Republican majority Supreme Court...........with that said considering there were over 1,000,000 legal abortions last year I can't help but wonder which one of those children would have been born and would someday find the cure for cancer..........now granted I'm sure there would also be some mass murders as well but I still wonder............of course we will never know.........Shokk

Yep .. I saw Rachel Maddows show ... didn't know who she was, just kind've stumbled on it.  Really enjoyed it.  I even saw Oberman for the first time and got a kick out of him too.  But then again, I get a kick out of Glenn Beck!

I can't repeat what my SO's peers said about Palin.  He's a long distance truck driver.

I am against gun control, but I guess that's where my support of Palin ends.  I flipflopped from Hillary to McCain, but then when he announced Palin, I lost it again and had to return to my party.  I don't support her views on religion, church and state, sex education, gay rights and freedom of speech.  I do applaud the fact that she stuck by her principles and climbed the latter to be governor of her state.  I absolutely do not want her to be the next VP or possible President of the U.S.

What happened to the Nader thread????

Edited to add:  Hi Shokk!  Geez I posted when reading the page before this.  So now we're talking about Roe v. Wade.  There are only two dissenting judges on the court now, Scalia and what's his name .. the one with Anita Hill.  It's not likely to be overturned.  I believe it is an individual choice.  It's not the choice for me, but I can't decide that for another woman.

Shokk said, "so the questions is when does the soul enter the body?........."

There we go again. The soul is part of your beliefs. Thousands, probably millions of Americans do not believe in a soul. Bringing the soul into the matter is imposing religious beliefs upon your fellow citizens.

You also said, "the cost of human life..........interesting......let's see first trimester a misdemeanor, second trimester man slaughter, late term or baby is born alive even after an attempted abortion then murder............." Now you are contradicting yourself again, big time. According to your own stated beliefs, if life begins at conception, then the life of an embryo that is five minutes old should be just as valuable as that of the president of the United States, let alone that of a second-trimester fetus.

Yes Iza you are correct..........like I said to djd I was being sarcastic and a bit of a bitch because for the gals that know me know that I use sarcasm to make my points.............and like I have said to Amy when we had this discussion last week I am a true pro lifer.........I believe human life begins at conception...........which means that not only do I have issues with abortion but also have issues with certain types of contraception, using embryos for stem cell research, incest, rape and all the other issues that being a pro lifer we must defend..............I believe the child should be protected at all cost even the mother's..............Shokk

    Obama4President:

I usually agree with you but not only did Felicia post that e-mail (which I adored and passed on to several people), but you replied to her original post yesterday.  I had to laugh...glad to know I'm not the only one losing it.

    Others:

I find the anti-choice talk frightening.  Are you saying that if one of my daughters is raped and wants to have the result scraped out of her uterus that she could spend time in prison?  That it is the same as assasinating the president of the USA?  Where are you on stem cell research.  O4P made a great point on this or another thread about what do we do with all the unclaimed fertilized eggs created by infertility treatments?  Personally, I don't think I am qualified to decide these matters for anyone else and therefore it should be decided by individuals with CHOICE.

Shokk, I was just wondering--do you feel the same way about abortions in relation to incest & rape? Who is being punished in those types of pregnancies? Why should a child or young teen let's say, be forced to carry to term a baby that she did not give consent to be in her body?

And, would we be in the middle of a discussion like this IF males were the ones to gestate the babies? I believe not! jmo

I believe that if my daughter should be raped and there is conception then the child should still be protected...........there is no law that says she must keep the child..........I would hope that she would give the child up for adoption............Gracie long time no see..............I am still making that curry chicken recipe I got from you.............it has become a family favorite.........and Grace if males were the ones to gestate then I think the human population would have died out long ago...........Shokk

That recipe is my husband's favorite also! So easy and yummy. I just avoid thinking about the calories. For that reason, I only make it a few times a year.

    Thanks for answering my questions.

And I'm still around on the board, checking in on all the political threads. I just don't have the energy to battle with words right now--life has gotten way too busy in retirement land. But I've actually gotten back into quilting again and found a wonderful group of women to meet w/once a month for lunch and some stitching.

Okay - the abortion debate is clearly an issue we will not all agree on, but on a lighter note - for those of you, like me,  who are loving the Rachel Maddow show, WTF is it with all those random beeps in the background??  I thought I was imagining things last night, but I realize tonight that it's definitely coming from the set of her show.  Oy vey, talk about annoying!  (but not enough to make me change the channel :-) )

HI Girls!  I have tried to stay out of the political debates on this web site, but I CANNOT help myself!  I am now a whole-hearted Obama Mama!!!!  I never was for McCain, but I couldn't get my heart into the Obama campaign ( I wanted Hillary!)  Still.....I am soooooooo incensed at McCain lately, what with all his flip-flopping and basically, reinventing himself that I cannot stay on the sidelines any longer.  I have registered on the Obama site, will be contributing money to his campaign and whatever else I can do.  I have lived through eight years of Bush and after the latest fiasco (the economic meltdown) I have had enough.  Anyway, I am just checking in to say HI and GO OBAMA!

Justanna, just in case you were finding *my* post frightening, be assured I never stated that an abortion is in any way comparable to an assassination, morally or legally speaking. On the contrary, I am inequivocally pro-choice and I was merely pointing out the holes in Shokk's pro-life arguments. But sorry to have scared you! I have reread my post and realize that a quick, "diagonal" reading of it might give the wrong impression. For context, just look back at my own posts on the matter, just a few messages up.

Shokk, you ask me when I consider that the fertilized eggs become a person. Well, the whole point of the pro-choice philosophy is that my answer to that question should not matter. Or more exactly, it should matter only to me personally, not to the rest of the country. The whole abortion issue should be each woman's ethical dilemma, and it should be up to each woman to figure it out for herself.

Donna, I noticed the beeps too.  And sometimes the sound in the studio is strangely "echoey."  But good news . . . she beat Keith in the ratings her first week.  Nice to see a wicked smart woman doing so well.  It gives one hope . . .

Go Anne, Obama Mama!  Just heard, from Rachel as a matter of fact, that Obama is doing quite well among women.  I think women are responding to his energy and optimism.  And the fact that he has some consistent ideas about the economy.  And let's face it, he looks mighty fine in a suit.

Speaking of suits and looks . . . have you noticed that Palin's got a new do?  They seem to be doing a subtle makeover on her.  Putting her into designer jackets and whatnot.  Are they hoping that by putting her into Italian suits, she'll look more worldly?  I thought her "down-hominess" was part of her charm.

Did anyone catch McCain having an Alzheimers moment?  Oops!  I meant senior moment lol.  This is the person who says he can lead our foreign affairs and then in front of camera's doesnt even know where Spain is?  Or that they are good allies and he slapped their president in the face yesterday?  I was glad to see the polls are changing and BO is starting to take a lead again.

shokk- I'm so sorry I mistook what was said about you to mean that was your  POV. Very glad to see that I was wrong. If abortion became illegal women would still have abortions, though they would be less safe and sometimes life threatening. They would go to canada, mexico, back alleys, doctors who work undercover like in JANE or do the procedure themselves. Abortion wouldn't go away, but it would probably lessen. We'd never have the true statistics. I had a friend who gave herself 2 abortions in high school by "creating a hostile environment" for the fetuses (she used a turkey baster to inject nail polish remover into herself Undecided). The idea of a woman  doing that makes me so sad. I knew someone who's father got her pregnant twice and then took her for abortions. Unlike you, I think that being born is sometimes a punishment to a fetus and I trust women to make that choice.

justanna- I was afraid I did that. A very senior moment, I never felt as close to John McCain as I do right now LOL.

grace- I've said before if men had babies choice wouldn't be an issue it would be considered common sense.

djd- I don't hear random beeps on Rachel, could it be something with your cable. I do get random skips in some of my cable shows and I know that's from comcast.

lewis- glad to have you aboard!

lza- I agree with you that abortion is each woman's ethical dilemma.

LA- the minute Palin was announced I wondered when her makeover would begin.

nic- McCain has had a LOT of senior moments in this campaign. If we call them sr moments, we get accused of using is age against him. Is it better to have a sr moment or just not know what the heck is going on?

Amy no need to apologize............I did not take offense in the least...........I do enjoy our "discussions".............with that said Iza I personally believe that scientifically that it is not a matter of opinion as to when life begins any more then it is a matter of opinion about evolution.........I have a science degree and I certainly was taught that life begins at conception just as I was taught about evolution...........the left refuses to answer that one question.............because they know that if they say what they know to be true then abortion would be murder..............as far as the law for pro choice like I said yesterday Roe vs. Wade will never be reverse but I personally think that it should not be federal policy but should be voted on a state by state and if the majority in any particular state doesn't want it then for that state if could be ruled illegal............then if someone is living in a state where abortions are not preformed they could go elsewhere and still have a legal abortion...........one more thing before I go (I really didn't mean to hijack the Obama thread)........yesterday when I heard the sound bite from Michelle Obama about not voting for someone just because they are cute I really thought she was talking about her husband.........I thought she was implying to vote for his policies not how cute he is............ha.............ok Obama fans..........good luck...........Shokk

shokk- I see your point. For those who believe abortion is murder, allowing for abortion in the cases of rape and incest or even the life of the mother  seems incongruous. I would imagine that the dilemma is even tougher for those who are against choice if one of the scenarios occurred.

All of this financial turmoil has my head spinning. My undergrad degree is in business so I've taken econ classes and can follow the basics pretty well. My eyes tend to gloss over when so much is happening so quickly on wall street, in banking, housing, insurance all at once. Financially this country is in a scary, scary place. Not paying for the Iraq war was a huge republican mistake, compounded by lowering taxes in a time of war. That's what Biden meant about patriotism and sacrifice during times of war. Now with all the bailouts, some more necessary than others, the next president is going to have a lot to decide. I don't see how either candidate can lower taxes. If Obama is elected, as I assume he will be, the republicans will lay the blame of higher taxes on his feet and that of a democratic run congress and I predict a lot of stonewalling. If McCain is elected he will blame not cutting taxes on congress.   I hope that they can work together to make the best long term decisions for the country and not big business and the wealthy. Obama says those making under $250,000 will be eligible for middle income tax cuts--- I know a lot of people who don't consider $250,000 middle income, it's more like 5 years income and they consider themselves middle class. I worry the priorities for Obama will have to change to make sure that long term we are solvent.

I disagree about the state control of the abortion issue. It needs to be mandated for every state in the union. And I believe this because, a woman living in a state were abortion is "illegal" may not have the funds to travel to another state. What this means, is that those with discretionary incomes can easily obtain the abortion they want, while the poor will again be faced with another inequity in this country. With all states allowing abortions means than anyone can obtain an abortion in that state, and does not mean that all medical personnel are required to perform the abortion. That's the whole problem in this country, is that we don't think about how laws being passed will affect each and every person in this country--we set up environments that are inequitable. It's time that will change and we Obama "fans" (as opposed to the McCain fans) are voting for change, big time!

Yeah, good imitation of ol' Keith.  He certainly has a style that invites parody.  I give him special props, though, for his "Palin lies" donation to the Alaska Special Olympics last night.  Brilliant gimmick.

Any thoughts about the upcoming debate?  I like that they're doing a sit-down discussion.  I think it will be more revealing if they each have to answer the same question in the same amount of time.  I'm sure there will be a lot of questions about the economy, taxes and regulation vs. de-regulation.  And health care.  I hope that Obama explains why trickle-down economics doesn't work, particularly in the current climate, and why rich people should pay more taxes.
