Bla bla bla, talk talk talk, 9 Americans wounded......

    Main Image

    Main Image

Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton told NBC's "Today" show the U.S. has to be "absolutely smart and strong and steady in how we respond."

"We've got to stand in solidarity with our European allies," she said.

But the former secretary of state cautioned against blanket bans on immigrants based on the attacks.

"It's unrealistic to say we're going to completely shut down our borders to everyone," she said. "I know that Americans have every reason to be frightened by what they see, (but) we've got to work this through, consistent with our values."

Clinton said in a statement that "the people of Brussels, of Europe and of the world will not be intimidated by these vicious killers."

"Today's attacks will only strengthen our resolve to stand together as allies and defeat terrorism and radical jihadism around the world," she said.

She later tweeted, "My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those killed and wounded, and all the people of Belgium" and "These terrorists seek to undermine the democratic values that are the foundation of our way of life. They will never succeed. -H"

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders called the attack "another cowardly attempt to terrorize innocent civilia

"Today's attack is a brutal reminder that the international community must come together to destroy ISIS. This type of barbarism cannot be allowed to continue," he said in a statement.

He also tweeted, "We offer our deepest condolences to the people of Brussels and stand with our European allies to offer any necessary assistance."

Speaking with reporters later in the day, Sanders said, "We have to have significantly improved intelligence, and that intelligence cannot be done just within the United States ... We have to share with countries around the world, to monitor the people who would do us harm. That goes without saying."

Asked about calls to monitor mosques following the attacks, Sanders said, "It would be unconstitutional, it would be wrong. We are fighting a terrorist organization, a barbaric organization that is killing innocent people. We are not fighting a religion."

"The wave of terror that has been unleashed in Europe and elsewhere around the world are attacks against our very way of life and against the democratic values upon which our political systems have been built," he said in a statement. "We and our allies must rededicate ourselves to these values of freedom and human rights. We must utterly reject the use of deadly acts of terror."

Later, Kasich called on President Barack Obama, currently on a foreign trip to Cuba, to return to the U.S.

"The president must return home immediately and get to work with our allies to respond with strength against the enemies of the west," he tweeted.

In a news conference in Minneapolis later in the day, Kasich said the U.S. would have to reassemble a global coalition of European and Arab allies like the one from the first Gulf War to "destroy ISIS."

"The challenge I think we are always going to face, especially here in the United States, is the issue of the lone wolf or lone wolves, small groups of people who are intent on inflicting harm," he said. "We have seen it in a number of ways here in the United States, most recently in San Bernardino."

Kasich also cautioned against sweeping targeting of Muslims, saying that would only lead more to become radicalized and unfairly target innocent people.

Though the attackers have yet to be identified, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz called the blasts "just the latest in a string of coordinated attacks by radical Islamic terrorists perpetrated those who are waging war against all who do not accept their extreme strain of Islam," in a Facebook post.

"Radical Islam is at war with us," he said, and accused Obama of refusing to "acknowledge this reality."

CNN's Eugene Scott, Tom LoBianco, Elizabeth Landers and Julia Manchester contributed to this report.

Didn't say that Suersis about my choice. Try to think big, the wall is the least of our problems. How do you think Americans are viewed right at this very moment? That has nothing to do with Trump.

The worst way to attempt to keep the US safe is to make generalizations about entire ethnic groups and religions and then flail out blindly seeking revenge, as we’ve been doing ever since 9/11. Our neocon leaders at the time were responsible for fanning the flames of hate & resentment by attacking nations whose governments were not responsible for the attacks upon us. We essentially created Al Qaeda in Iraq, set Sunni against Shi’a on a grander scale than before 2003, and left a vacuum into which ISIS could enter & seize power. Every anti-Muslim utterance by a bigoted politician (or a cynical one pushing our fear buttons) only makes ISIS stronger. And what can Obama do or say in the White House about the Brussels attacks that he can’t do or say while in Havana? Presidents govern on vacation all the time. I seriously doubt Raul Castro has him on the same “internet silence” as the Cuban population. And I’m sure that if he’s advised by his staff to pack up the suitcases & fly home, he will.

As for the media becoming disenchanted with Trump, they’re not giving him any less coverage by pointing out the error(s) of his ways. Far from it, his rantings & antics have resulted in even more free airtime. Every other candidate has to be interviewed in person, but Trump gets away with Tweeting and literally phoning it in. He calls, and news depts. drop what they’re doing and let him unleash his verbal diarrhea by telephone--live on-air. Les Moonves of CBS let the mask slip and admitted that Trump is a ratings goldmine--regardless of how bad he’d be for the free world, he’s terrific for broadcast & cable’s bottom line. Any debate he was in commanded ad rates 5-10x more expensive than for the Super Bowl. We all say “oh, how awful,” but we all slow down to watch the multi-car pileup. So it is with Trump on TV.

Caryn, I too am a CUNY alum (Brooklyn College). Not only didn’t I have to pay a cent other than for books, carfare and $53/semester activity fee--I got a $450 Regents scholarship each year, which paid for my books and then some. My folks & I never paid a penny for tuition until law school--and even at what was then an expensive $3K/yr., I had student loan debt of only $13K and Bob (who was paid to go to grad school at a state university and then paid $750 for each of his last two years of medical school) borrowed only $2000.

      Sandy,

Ah, those days are gone for good. During my senior year, we drove up to Albany in a snowstorm to protest the proposed imposition of tuition on the CUNY system. Not sure what year it was finally implemented, but there was no going back after that. I didn't go to grad school until I was in my 40's. I went to the University of San Francisco, a private university and paid $20,000. for a Master's degree and a change in teaching credential. Fortunately, I could afford to pay for it outright.

And now, back to our discussion of Michelle Obama's dress (it merited a double post!). Although I am too petite to pull off larger flowers, it looked good on her 😊

All of that bombast in those tweets does not make a great President. If he were in the POTUS shoes, he would not be so reactionary and act like he knows everything. This is a very sensitive situation and it can't be strong-armed. It must be finessed and then some. As for the Obamas in Cuba, that is a historic trip and deserves coverage by the press. When Nixon went to China, no one said anything like this. Normalizing relations with Cuba has been high on the list of the past several POTUS. Strategically we could really benefit from a good relationship with them for our Navy.

If you don't understand things like that, puffing your chest out and saying things like "Come home this minute and stand with our European allies" makes him feel important and like he knows things. He knows diddly-squat about what it takes to run the USA. Period. He is going to get us into a war or worse, and/or we will be the laughing stock of the world.

Before someone says that Clinton's sex scandal made us a laughing stock, I will agree with that, but not for the reasons you think. "All of the big world leaders said that "Presidents and high ranking officials all over the globe often have mistresses and making it such a big deal in the public eye makes them look stupid as it should be a private matter."

Do I agree that all powerful men should have a mistress and not be called on it? Hell no, but it is the way it was viewed by many and why they laughed at us for trying to impeach President Clinton and spending all of that money on those hearings. It was ridiculous and a private matter between Bill and Hillary, not for the world to judge.

      April,

You are so right about the bombastic tweets. I have often wondered how Mr. Trump is always "right", in his opinion, and knows exactly what to do about, well, everything! Finesse is clearly not his style, but is reminiscent of dictators.

Yes, the Lewinsky thing was a mess, but we did indeed have the world wondering why we were making this an issue of national importance.

So she should be dressed in rags??l

      image from FB

Beyond the obvious beauty and grace of our First Lady, one must consider the historic importance of this photo. Our history books sweep under the rug the fact that the White House was built by African American slaves. For the next 150 years the majority of the serving staff of the so called "people's house" were African American. In 1901 Booker T. Washington was the first African American to be received there as a guest by Theodore Roosevelt, to the horror of Washington society. They are all at last vindicated in our first African American President and his family.
Note...When I first posted this 3 years ago, I had found the photo in a FB post complaining about the Obama Family and how they had no business being in the White house. There were many very ugly and shameful comments attached. I felt embarrassed and needed to repost this at that time with the attached text.(Photo by Annie Liebowitz).

Smarty, that is a gorgeous photo of our incredibly gracious and lovely first lady. The Obamas have always maintained dignity while occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., despite what detractors say about this President and his family. I for one think that HE is the one who got the raw deal here, not America. He was so filled with hope and idealism when he took office and then a lot of very scared congress people cut him off at the knees. Now they are facing their worst fear...a WOMAN President! The good ole boys network is hanging on by their fingernails and they are scared that the end of a lonnnnng era is near.

Disagree with President Obama politically all you want but that family has more class than any that held that office has in a very long time.

While there are citizens who have given serious thought and consideration as to why they are for voting for Trump, I think there is a group, not big, not small, of people who are voting or will vote for him for no other reason than to make the presidential election a big joke. They have no reverence for the United States. They are in it for the entertainment value. There isn't a seriousness to their vote, yet it counts anyway. Because we live in the USA.

I am voting for Hillary. After 240 years of men ruling this nation, I want to see how a woman would run it. I want to see that glass ceiling broken. Hilary may have skeletons in and out of the closet, but imo, ALL politicians do, we may not be as aware of what they are with some of them. It's not any woman I would vote for. I believe Hillary is qualified.

      Just as:

Sue writes: There are times where the fiscal philosophy of a candidate is more important to me than their social ideology.

      And

ChiSandy writes: So I also freely admit to voting against my own economic interests in favor of compassion, equality, and fairness,

...it is more important to me to vote for Hillary because she is a qualified woman candidate. I am voting in favor of the advancement of women. Tho I don't have daughters, I still want the younger generation of females to be empowered, encouraged and inspired by a woman as President of the Unitd States. Let's see what she can do.

I have been reading these posts and hadn't wanted to express my opinions so publically, but now have decided to offer, not an opinion, but a quote from a young adult book. I am neither Dem or Rep and try to choose my candidate by who best meets my ideology on fair and ethical behavior and trustworthiness. I am struggling this election to find anyone who meets what I believe. The words and mudslinging by most presidential candidates turns me off. I ran across this quote and think it fits in well with the current political run:

"People are always quick to call evil what they do not know. The unknown sprouts fear. It spreads like an infection, burrowing into every facet of their lives. They need a scapegoat, someone to blame. Fingers are pointed, accusations are made, and a target lands on somebody's back. They grow angry. They turn violent.
To history, human nature must be a stubborn and tiring student. No matter how many times history tries to show it the error of its ways, it never learns from its mistakes."
      Kelseyleigh Reber, If I Resist

      Peace and blessings to all.

I agree with April she has a grace and poise that not all first ladies have had. Poor Michelle has had some awful things written and said about her, just terrible -totally unwarranted and quite shameful.

I am also in agreement with Divine's expressions, for how 'progressive' and 'forward thinking' the US likes to think it is, they are waaaay behind the curve ball with females in the work place and politics, well, just in general thinking about it. The world has seen a multitude female leaders, many formidable ladies - love or hate their politics: Margaret Thatcher, Indira Gandhi, Angela Merkel, Benazir Bhutto, Isabel Peron, Michele Bachelet, Gloria Arroyo.... I think it is about time the US stepped up to the mark and voted a women in. I would love to see Hillary pick a female running mate (Elizabeth Warren??) but I couldn't see that happening - the good ole boys club would certainly choke on that! Just please reassure me that there is no way Trump would pick Sarah Palin, is there??

Truth be told, I feel very comfortable with Bernie Sanders point of view, however none of seems very realistic or doable. Ever the pragmatist, Hilary will be my pick despite her flaws. I am not thrilled with politicians as a whole, but I simply can not see handing the presidency to someone with absolutely no governing experience. Running a big business, well or not, is simply not the same.

Last night, I saw a TV interview with Larry Sabato, a frequent political commentator and professor at UVA, Charlottesville. He laughed when the TV anchor suggested that a great book title for this election cycle could be "Classless". He said he just might write such a book.

PS: Walmart, K-mart? No, thank you, but Target has some nice dresses 😝

Funny, one of the most honest rationales I've ever heard for electing a candidate came in 2008 from a 6-year-old I knew. He announced he'd be voting for John McCain because of the pretty lady, meaning Sarah Palin. Which of course horrified his lefty parents.

That said, DivineMrsM said better than I could have why I am voting for Hillary Clinton. Aside from the fact that she is eminently qualified, aside from the fact that she is well versed in foreign policy through her tenure as secretary of state and domestic policy and health care in particular, aside from the fact that electing a Democrat is key to the upcoming Supreme Court appointments, well, it's time. Eight years ago, I voted for her in the primary but wholeheartedly and joyfully voted for Obama in the general. Now I am joyfully voting for the woman, who is, in my mind, far and away the most qualified of all the candidates, and hoping to watch her Inauguration address on January 20.

When I was a teenager, I read a science fiction novel by Philip Wylie called The Disappearance. In it, for no particular reason, all of the women disappeared, and the men had to make their way. Similarly, to the women, it appeared that all the men disappeared. It was quite instructive to see which half of the world--the men or the women--quickly rebounded and rebuilt their society. Can you guess?

I love reading everyone's thoughts here, but it's interesting that only one Trump supporter has spoken up. Please correct me if I'm wrong! I find it odd considering how well he's doing. Are people too afraid to publicly pledge their allegiance to him? Don't be! I'd like to hear some real arguments in his defense. I will say that when I first learned that Trump was going to run last June, I was intrigued… I mean before he um… opened his mouth:) I feel like he's let us all down already with his insults and immaturity. Too bad.

I did vote for Obama, and I do tend to lean more to the left, but I 'm open. However, I will not vote for Hillary just because she's a woman. In my opinion, she's not the right woman but possibly the safe(r ) bet.

It doesn't surprise me that this thread has only one Trump supporter; participants on the forum are overwhelmingly women. I don't see how women would want to vote for Trump when he is the epitome of a "good ole' boy", we've heard his comments about women and seen his treatment of women ad nauseam. It actually causes me sadness for the sake of all that women have achieved to think they would overlook all of those things about Donald and vote for him.

I've never been outspoken about my choice for President prior to this election. My parents never told each other who they voted for. It kept the peace. My husband and I sometimes do and sometimes don't tell each other who we are voting for. But this election, he knows I am a Hillary supporter, as does the rest of my family, a few who are staunch Republicans.

I should clarify that I am thrilled to vote for Hilary Clinton as a woman candidate, but my support for her goes beyond her gender. I have always thought Bill Clinton was an excellent president. He had flaws--and I wish he had not been so fast and loose and indiscreet with other women--but he left the country in very good shape.

I would be equally thrilled with Elizabeth Warren. I'm an enormous fan of her progressive politics. But she has said, loud and clear, that she isn't running.

I think that for me, the Rolling Stone endorsement for Hillary Clinton said much better than I could say why I think she is the most qualified candidate. Read it here: https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/hillary...

Something to think about: There are probably women on these boards whose mothers grew up not expecting to cast a vote. My grandmothers came of age without the vote and cast it for the first time as young women. This fall will be the 25th presidential election in which women have voted.
