    Great Halloween Costume!

DH and I visited the Hemingway house in Key West in 2005. There are 6-toed cats there that are descendants of a cat that belonged to Hemingway which had a genetic aberration leading to an extra digit (which is called polydactylism). The cats, both 6-toed and normal variety, have a great life as they are totally looked after and have the run of the place (just as it should be). In fact if you had to come back as a cat that would be a good place to do it.

Love the pics and the Hemingway. Great Halloween costume! We did land safely; 150 km/hr winds and a flight attendant (and others) threw up). Lots of screaming. And applause at the end. Coming home wasn't as bad. It's always windy coming into Wellington, and bumpy, and miserable. But most of the flight home was good. Thanks for the kind thoughts! Have to go to a meeting, but will have lots of cute KI pics to put up later today!

Awww..Max and Rudy. How cute! There's a polydac cat at KI right now, and the demand is high for it!

And here's more cuteness. Woody is the one found on the log in the river and rescued by the teenagers. The orange momma's babies are 3 days old in this pic. The others are kittens in foster care at the moment.

Kiwi, Are there a lot of long haired cats there? They are rarer here. Fascinating fact: cats in Boston resemble cats in Britain, while cats is New York resemble cats in Amsterdam. I liked the Hemingway photos. We had a cat at the shelter named Brett Ashley (female) and didn't figure it out until someone called her a Hemingway polydactal and we realized those are 2 Hemingway characters.

FeelingFeline, think I will have to put Key West on my long travel-to-do list.

Kiwi! Oohhhh those kittens!!! And a wonderful mom. Just loving them.

Welcome Wabals! Lovely gingers, are Max and Rudy brothers?

Wren, Brett Ashley is a much nicer name than some of those cat names that Hemingway chose for his felines lol!!

There is a book on Amazon about Hemingway and his cats... one reviewer said... "When one thinks of Ernest Hemingway, one usually thinks of a macho adventurer, going on safari, running with the bulls or deep sea fishing, just like the heroes of his novels. One does not often picture him at home caring for stray cats and dogs - yet that's exactly the Hemingway we meet in "Hemingway's Cats." We also meet his four wives and his children, but the stars are the many cats and dogs Hemingway cared for over the course of his life. He often brought home strays, and they became part of his extended family." The hardcover came out in 2006... think I will ask Santa for this one, this is a side of Hemingway that I had never imagined!

Squeakers decided to sleep with me last night - crosswise. We have 2 twin beds pushed together with king sheets & blankets. I spent the night in the crack between them. Tomorrow I'm going to move him to lengthwise and have more room. He wasn't sleeping with us until we got the foster cat, Rusty, who has to stay in a large cage. Now we think he's staking out his territory with an eye on defending it in the future.

Kitten photos of The Brown Cat. He adopted me and my two kitties (Pistachio and Clarence) when I moved into my new apartment in Miami. He would greet me, loudly, when i came home and stand in front of my door and hop on the windowsill until I fed him. He was so big I thought he was full-grown until I took him to the vet for the first time. Because of a mixup, I had to take him to be fixed twice. Now he is a reasonably happy indoor cat, although he still has some outdoor cat ways, like drinking water from the toilet.

they always look so sophisticated drinking out of the toilet lol.

My kitties hate us all right now. They are over being frightened from the move but they are mad at us now.

Kiwi, how is Cleo and her baby?

CAMommy - stages of grief. :) Sadness, anger, etc. I'm sure they'll get adjusted. Ours get annoyed with us too.

Love the drinking out of the dunny. Too funny. What a lovely kitty.

Arthur is just wonderful. Love him!

Sadly, Cleo's baby passed away. Quite sad and unexpected. It seemed to be doing well, but passed away overnight a few days ago. Haven't had the heart to tell you yet. Cleo was really depressed, but is doing well now. She's been spayed and has a forever home to go to. She's been perkier since she's been spayed. They thought about putting one of the orphans with her, but she wasn't interested, so they went ahead with the spay. Poor kitty. She had so many litters so close together that her abdominal muscles were wrecked and she couldn't push the kittens out. Really sad.

    On a happier note...

Any suggestions for easy homemade cat toys?

My crazy cat won't play with anything I buy (toy mice, balls, feathers, wands etc.).

She will chase hair ties, plastic ties (all big enough for her not to swallow), paper balls, straws, lid sealers. She gets bored with them and I have to put them out of sight for a few days to get her playing again.

Forgot to add - kitty is scared of cardboard boxes! She wont play with them or go into them.

Arthur won't play with toys either AND the cat bed purchases have all been a waste of money too

He does like movement (eg he will chase a bit of rope but like your kitty gets bored after a short time)

Guess these cats are just TOO clever huh?

I wonder if your kitty had a bad experience with a box once?

I should also have said Arthur enjoys attacking feet (human) think it's the movement that attracts him. This is not so popular as a game with us humans though!

ours like paper sacks, toilet paper rolls, milk rings.

Try toilet paper rolls (the inner part) and cut the ends into fringe. A lot of cats at the shelter like the long stick with ribbons at the end. They reflect light and seem to be difficult to chew off.

poor Cleo. :'(. I worked with a rescue where we used to live and it's a sad fact that kittens often get sick and die when they are newborn, I'm sorry for Cleo. I'm glad she has a furever home now and can just get the love she deserves.
