I used to be Head Baker for a school district in our town......I baked for 8 schools and the districts business office......everything was from scratch...not like today where they bring the foold in on trucks already made......
Anyway....we would get government subsidies....some of them were Canned sweet potatoes, butter, tuna, chicken, cranberry sauce, flour, sugar, etc...I think ;you get my point...........at Thanksgiving we would make our own piecrust.....we would use the canned sweet potatoes, add all the spices needed to make a pie.......and the kdis had homemade sweet potato pie to go along with their Thanksgiving dinner that we would serve the week before the holiday.......this is the funny part........
We had a diverse school district, so when the kids would come to the counter for their food and would see the pies as their dwssert....they would get all excited and thrilled because it was pie for dessert..........the black students would say across the counter where they would see me.....Mrs B.....is that Sweet Potato Pie.....and the White students would say "Mrs. B..is that Pumpkin Pie........I would answer......"what do you want it to be"........of course each gave their own answer as to which they liked............I would say back to them....."Honey it is whatever you want it to be".........they would all laugh, then go sit eat it and argue who was right about which it was.....Loved those kids and my job......LO
-
I like my yams/ sweet potatoes chunked up into good sized bites, with some clarified butter, more turmeric than you would think, and a pinch of salt, baked in my convection oven until fork and tooth tender. So deliscious, I I first had it at a friends' house for lunch.
Ducky that's right! I forgot you were the lunch lady! At my schools, the lunch lady's were some of the kindest people there. They were always giving me extra milk, hot buns, chocolate pudding, whatever they could tell I liked. I was so tiny, I think they were trying to get me to grow!
And here is a little assemblage/ sculpture i made over the weekend, been meaning to for years. It's my 'bad teeth nightmare' fit for this halloween season. Cover your eyes if you are squeamish!
-
LOL.......now did that belong to some dog originally........LOL
Yep I was one of the lunch ladies......would have rather been up front with the kids, but was always fun to see them asking "What's for dessert today"......everythng was almost homemade from scratch...nothing came out of a box.......Pudding, cakes, pies, cookies, etc....just hated when we had to make cupcakes....then ice them all....what a job........
The schools I baked for today get eveything brought in....no good food always fast food.....the one thing we didn't make freah was the Pizza, but then that was not my job.........burgers, hoagies, shepherds pie, and we also made Texas Tommy's from scratch........again not my Dept, but I was right next to them in the kitchen.......all soups were homemade.......
One thing is a great idea for any of your Moms with young kids.......we would get cranberry sauce and grape jelly from the government...and it was top shelf.....we would mix a large can of cranberry sauce to 2 jars of grape jelly.......cut down on the sweetness, and made it so easy to spread....and it was reall;y good.....try it.........we also made our own peanut butter.....it came in a can from the gov. also, and it was very thick....we would add a 1lb brick of butter to it.......talk about good P and J........loved my job.
This was all before going to work for GlaxoSmithkline for 20 years,......I've done well...
-
Tomboy ..Haha ..I LOVE your Halloween sculpture ..very timely with combination of Halloween and your teeth issues at the moment .!!!! .PLUS what a wonderful talking point ...!!! 😃
Ducky ..ahh..just love this thread ..it's so educational..I didn't have the foggiest what a Texas Tommy was , so had to google it ...only to find out it is one of my ( and my grand-kids ) favourites ..a hot dog with cheese and bacon ...!
Iris ..ugh ..nothing worse than spotting water marks on the ceiling ..I hope it's not caused by anything major , and can be fixed easily , and cheaply.!
Nice wet morning here ..I'm finding it hard to get out of bed ...especially seeing I had insomnia for half the night :-(
-
well got me a contractor so silly repair to leaky bathroom is in work
Dang all but least i am home this week to deal with stuff
-
Lucy we used to make something called Weeny Winks.....it wss our version of a Texas Tommy when it was on the menu, but the Gov. fidn't deliver our Hot Dog rolls.....You have to try this.....I think it is even better.
You use fresh bread...lay it flat, and put a bit of melted butter on with a pastry brush...then you put a piece of American chesse on the buttered side.......then your lay hot dog at the far corner of the bread and roll it from one corner to the opposite corner diagonal and secure it with toothpicks....then you dab some of your melted butter on the top of the bread.........Bake in the oven till the bread is toasty, and the hot dog cooked....about 20 minutes....Oven is 350.........
-
Ducky ..yummy ...I've never heard of a Weeny Winks before either ..but I want one NOW ..will definately make them ...and think of you while I'm eating it ..I will tell the kids it's called "Ducky's Weeny Winks " 😃
-
goodness, i think the weeney winks looks awesome, bet the kids loved them, now if i could think of something other than a hot dog to use...? My tummy is sensetive these days
-
Proud.....they did love them, and each child got 2.....not with what you see on that plate......they would get french fries, a piece of cruit, choice of milk, and peanut butter stuffed celery......we did feed them well.......I'll admit that was not a lot fat lunch, but sometimes you have to give them what theyenjoy.....however today in schools the lunches are very "fast food".......and all desserts are bought from a company....which has all types of preservatives in them......but that is the way it is today.
Enjoy your Weeny Winks Lucy.....
-
Ducky ..I've never seen peanut butter paired with celery before .. .I'm sure kids would love it ..!!
....so I headed to goggle again ...and saw celery , cream cheese and raisens sticks called "ants on a log "...HaHa
-
Yep that is what it is called....had we gotten free cream cheese from the Gov. we would have used that too.......
One thing I did when I was a baker for the school dist. sales for lunches begain to drop off.....so I dexided to try soemthing the kids would love....we made homemade chocolate chip cookes which we served with lunch as their dessert.......
One day I got an idea to make a huge chocolate chip cookie and for every boy or girl that bought the lunch platter we gave a ticket to.....when the luch was almost over we would draw a ticket from a big basket, and the child with the winning ticket would win the giant cookie......the kids loved it.....and luch sales went up 50%.....the Dist. loved it, kids loved it, and the parent did too......it saved them making lunches everyday, and and the platter was really reasonable.......plus htye were getting good food.......
Then along came Mrs. Fields with her huge cookie sold in the Mall......My kids said 'Mom you use to do that in the cafeteria for the kids.......yep I did, just a bit ahead of Mrs. Fields....who would have thought....LO
-
ducky, bet yours would beat mrs fields
I used to bribe the firemen across from my blyn appt with,cc cookies, whenever i needed their help! Firemen can be bought for a good cookie
-
Iris ...HaHaHa..😃...I think most men can be bought with a good cookie !!!!
-
For the peanut butter lovers out there - as kids, we used to have slices of banana with peanut butter on them & called them banana nickles. I made these for my daughter when she was little & to this day love peanut butter & banana. We, too, ate peanut butter on celery.
-
lucy......i too can be bought for a cookie!
Since my stage 4 diagnosis, i know eat cookies and ........ice cream!
-
CeliaC ...I never would of thought of combining peanut butter and banana either...so now have investigated more ...and found The Elvis Toastie ..peanut butter , bacon and maple syrup...which I've never heard of !!!...but I'm going to have if for lunch today 😃
Iris ..how's your ceiling going ?
Well our trucks come to move us on Monday ...so trying to get organised ..but so much to do !!...hubby has made a replica chook house like we have here , for the new place , so we spent yesterday wireing it up so the " girls " have a nice new home to move too !!
-
lucy, got me a contractor type and plan on doing a bunch of,stuff, also have shut water off to that bathroom
Spending time checking out home depot as plan on more than painting the ceiling
-
Lucy, you can also try just bacon & peanut butter sandwiches. Several work associates also like peanut butter on apple slices. Let us know how your peanut butter eating adventures work out. Bacon & maple is a big thing with several places here who make donuts.
-
my neice did peace corps in haiti, she made her own peanut butter including grinding the peanuts..... yeah little overboard but my xmas gift was a jar of pb, she added hot peppers since she knew how much i liked hot stuff
Try a couple drops of hot sauce!
-
peanut butter is also really good mixed with maple syrup and poured over vanilla ice cream! :-)
Lucy, good luck with the move. I am sure 'the girls' will be happy in their new home....
I feel like I've been a bit MIA, Crazies, trying to get all ready for my knee replacement surgery November 2nd. It feels like my life is nothing but doc apts. As the date gets closer, I am getting a little nervous, but I will be glad to be on the other side of it....
-
Ducky ...how is your grand daughter ?? Has she had her op yet ?
Octo ..yes ..your surgery is getting very close !!..I know last October when my hysterectomy was getting close I couldn't wait to get to the other side as well ..
Actually ..when I think of it ..I can't wait to be on the other side of this move now too ..!!
Hi to Iris and CeliaC and all the other quiet Crazies ..I'm missing you .
-
Octo, in your pocket for your TKR! Lucy, best wishes on the move. Ducky, I am praying for your DGD for tomorrow. Iris, have fun looking at Home Depot. I love looking at renovation stuff. If only DH would let me actually DO something, lol. Crazy busy but always thinking about all of you. Hugs especially to our quiet crazies.
-
Lucy, thanks for asking.....her surgery is tomorrow morning at 9:30....she is in good spirits.....just hoping the cyst even though it is large has not wrapped itselfa round any other organs.....it has to come out......I'm nervous while she remains very calm....I guess that is yourth for you......I will let everyone know tomorrow as soon as I can get to my Ipad or telephone how she is doing.....hoping and praying.........hugs
-
hugs Ducky
-
Ok, knew it would be a night of no sleep...sitting drinking coffee and "worrying"......my daughter will be piicking me up at 8am...Makayla has to be at the hospital by 9am and they said surgery is 9:30.........I will be surprised if that happenes.......remember the days of 2 hours before surgery you had to be there....maybe things are changing.....
I feel good that it is being done at University of Pennsylvania Hospital, and be ing done by a GYN surgeon......just hoping she does well...thanks again for your prayers......hugs
-
Been busy since ladt week, first time I have been able to pop I here. Cardiologist gave me some good news last week. May only be on the blood thinner for 3 months, it all depends on what my next CT Scans show. Have no restrictions so I can do as I please. Hubby and I were both thrilled over the news
-
Octo - in your pocket, too. Ducky - hope Makayla's surgery goes well. I am having a 2nd post radiation RO check up on Monday - maybe this will be the last one? Getting a free pedicure at noon today, courtesy of Survivorship Clinic & a group called Paddling for Cancer Awareness (dragon boat rowing teams). It is actually still warm enough here during the day (75 today) to wear sandals. Happy weekend and gentle hugs to all!
-
Ducky ..sending turbo prayers for Makayla...
Mommy ..yay for good news !!
CeliaC..enjoy your pedicure..There is a dragon boat team where I live ..I thought it would be fun to get involved ..but it was much harder than I thought to keep in time etc .!!! .everyone was lovely and said it takes ages to feel totally comfortable doing it ..but I decided not to persue it .The other draw back for me was that they train 2 mornings a week at 6am , and well as one afternoon .They all loved it though ..and go overseas each year to compete .
-
Yep. I never take good news for granted.
-
Hi Ladies......well its over....she is home and doing well...she did not get sick from the anesthesia.....she is walkng good...only complain was the mark on her nose from the anesthesia mask...LOL....she said "Nan don't send them that awful picture.....well here goes....its coming...LOL......they said the cyst was as big as the Dr.s fist...she called it very, very, large....but she managed to get it without an serious problem.......it was larger then she though, and on the fallopian tube....they had to invade the tube, and she said that scar tissue could form even though she put someing there to stop it from closing,.....hopefully it works......so all is well, some pain nothing severe, but she is on pain. meds....but not for long...my daughter will surely take them off of her and switch to Advil or Tylenol......Ok here goes.....in case she sees this I have to show a picture you already saw....LOL..She also said Thank you for the prayers.
