    *Happy New Year's Eve* ;o)

My amaryllis bulb with a striped (red and white) bloom should also bloom in January.

I once tried to overwinter an outdoor geranium causing an infestation of spider mites on the houseplants. Luckily, able to treat the houseplants with rubbing alcohol. I learned my lesson. ;o)

Oh my people, that is just TOO cold. I have asthma and when the air is that cold, I can't breathe. We had deep freeze here about 7 years ago one Feb and it went to -8 F here in the desert.

It abnormally warm here right now, and no moisture for close to 3 months now. I am keeping up with watering the trees and gardens at least once a week. I lost a couple trees in 2011 after years of drought and think that deep freeze just took a few weakened things out. Some of the trees look like they are trying to bud out too (way too soon). The fruit trees will bloom by end of February but they are months early.

We are hoping our moisture is just coming late this year. Ski season is a bust here in the west for the most part.

    TwoHobbies,

A nice pic of lovely plants and snowy background.

    GmaFoley,

We've 4 double sided cake suet feeders to prevent the hairy woodpeckers from bullying the downy woodpeckers.

We have woodpeckers too ;-) The blue jay will make a noise like a hawk and make all the other birds flee.

I was at a yoga retreat this weekend in the mountains here and the retreat center had this hyacynth blub in the vase and thought it was so cool. Going to try this at home!

Teka- how lovely. I have one that is about to unfold and waiting to see the color (think it is gong to be a pink variety). I love the amaryllis.

One of my favorite tricks after any holiday is to check the local grocery store for left over flowers at discount. I was at one of my stores yesterday and they had these fabulous bins of bunched flowers for $1.99 each. I got two of them and this is the beautiful post V-day bouquet that was the result. Pretty amazing for just under four bucks, eh?

I see our fruit trees budded out and they start blooming here soon (late Feb to March). Spring is on the horizon, but we can see snow here through April, sometimes in to May too.

Have a great President's day weekend to those here in the US!

We have daffodils in bloom and a hard freeze predicted. Should I cut them and bring them inside? Or will they thaw and be OK?

Wren44: are the daffodils in the ground? Mine have, while in full and enthusiastic bloom, survived being buried in snow. Spring comes late to my corner of Michigan.

About the most exciting gardening thing for me so far is ordering my wildflower mixes.

Wrenn, can you cover the daffodils with a sheet to protect them from the frost?

Wren- the daffs come up here often with our snow but it is not heavy snow. I think I saw you had some light snow falling up in WA today? I think they will be okay, but if you have a way to cover, not a bad idea?

Is anybody else starting to think about a vegetable garden? I didn't plant one last year because I knew I'd be in the middle of chemo and probably wouldn't be up to maintaining it by myself, and I REALLY missed my garden. I can't wait for some home-grown veggies!

Daffodils are in the ground, so hopefully they'll be Ok. They're scattered all over the front yard, so wouldn't be able to cover them. Snow has stopped, so it will just be cold and windy.

We have a garden in the ground in our back yard and grow a lot of veggies on our deck. The saucers for big pots are deep enough for lettuce and small tomatoes can go in pots. We don't have a lot of sun - 2 humongous trees on the back fence. We also go to the farmer's market here. Lots of fresh produce there.

Returning to this thread after a long break from the boards. I can't wait to garden this year!

lovepugs, I have veggie gardening on my mind too. Early spring gardening is my favorite, before the pests come out. The weather is forcing me to wait, but I'm ready to get the seeds out for hardy greens and root vegetables.

My garden bed is a slushy, muddy mess right now, but I still enjoy the planning this time of year.

lovepugs77– yes, mentally planning the veggie garden for 2018. Like you, BC treatments kept me out of the garden last year ☹️ DH tried to keep it going on his own but after his heart attack and open heart surgery, the garden was just an after thought. In fact, we didn’t get the tomato plants pulled out last year so we have done work to do before planting. We do a lot of heirlooms and will be starting seeds indoors soon. The AeroGarden has a great seed starter kit. I bought an electric pruner for me as AIs make my hands hur

Kiki, I’d like to do an early spring garden, but my fiancé is working out of town for a few months, and I am just not physically able to do all of the prep work myself...grass grew over the garden area last year. :/ I’d really like to do some broccoli, but that’s not in the cards for this year. I’m looking forward to my summer squash, peppers, eggplant, radishes, etc. I want to try some root vegetables this year- turnips, rutabaga, carrots, and parsnips, but I don’t know much about them. Need to do some research.

Dodgers girl, your tomatoes sound great! Every year I plant tomatoes, and every year the leaf footed bugs ruin them before I harvest many tomatoes. Do you have any trouble with them
