Rhea, have you considered DIEP??? No muscles are cut in a modified mastectomy which most surgeons do now adays. I'd be stunned to find out you needed muscles cut today. I have NOT had a reduction in strength but I am still numb after 5 years in the under arm where nodes were taken. Total muscle control, though.

I have had nerves that were cut, which caused a tremor (slight) and less strength on the left side. And the left shoulder freezes, not sure why but it began after breast cancer.

Nerves are WAY different than muscles, crystal. They can't avoid not cutting nerves. In fact, I actually asked my surgeon (in front of my DH) where the nerves were that used to be attached to my nipples!!! Like, seriously, did they snap back into my ankles or something??????? He told me to have fun finding them....hehehehehehhee

As for your frozen shoulder sweetie, that is strangely common and I don't know why!!! Did you get recon at first? Sorry I can't remember. I know of at least a dozen women that had to get PT to alleviate the frozen part. Does your doc know??

Thank you everyone!  I met with a plastic surgeon yesterday since I'm waiting for a date for a BM and just don't want the worries of implants!  Reading these posts is helping me to realize that I can be happy being flat!

Good for you candy!! Keep us posted as to where you are in the grieving process for your lost breast - it WILL happen, so don't be surprised. The only feeling I NEVER felt was regret!! But I did and do miss my breasts at certain times...Wink

I just have to chime in on this forum. I have been breast free since 2012. I have to say I have never missed wearing a bra. Before my dx, I was a DD and very uncomfortable.. After my dx, my breast surgeon thought I wanted implants. I was in such pain with those nasty expanders during chemo. I just had to take them out and my plastic surgeon after three surgeries got it right and made me flat. It was the best decision I made to go flat and not have implants.

Sure I get looks but not to draw attention. Breasts do not make a woman feminine that's for sure. When i went on a recent cruise I wore a breast cancer lanyard just to let people know I was a survivor and very happy to be breast free. I never felt regret!

Ladies be proud of being breast free. We still are a bunch of wonderful women!

hey there. Did you have the expanders in and then opt not to have implants? I currently started the process for reconstruction with expanders. Now I am thinking otherwise. Not sure how that pans out with surgery- still need to update my PS about my concerns and possible change in plans for NO implants

Barrington. Yes, I had expanders in. I hated the fills for the implants so I had the expanders removed. They were so uncomfortable! I had temporary implants in for 9 months due to my teaching schedule but then those were removed as well. I would never want implants again but that is a personal decision. I am very happy with my decision and have no regrets.
