Good gravy I had to take some notes!

Movie-how is the tooth? And tata to the tatas party. Awesome...I love it. I hope NOBODY else I know ever gets this freaking disease....but if they do I am going to remember that.

FireDragonll - when do u expect you will know your surgery date?

Sweetpickle...sounds like you are getting the 3 weeks blues (just a bit late). You have been beat up thoroughly by the treatment.....don't beat yourself up, too. You may not be where you would like to be physically....but you beat cancer (and got surgically put back together). There is time. Right now is a time for baby steps. And a few days ago you said you lost 10 lbs since diep....that is GREAT.

    Kuka - yes....love me some gel/shellac nails...best invention of the 21st century.

I was told by my chemo nurses to not let anyone else besides them access my port....guess t hey were worried someone without experience would wreck it?

Goldie - no welcome back lunch at work....but they did do a wig/scarf/hat day for me during chemo :) and my boss bought my blond and brunette wigs (I bought the red one later on lol). They are awesome.

Jeannie - do you have the pink LE warning bracelets? We had an unfortunate experience a year ago when I was unexpectedly hospitalized....didn't have a bracelet with me and DH had to fight the sharks off my left arm...he had to demand a sign on the wall. I told him if it ever happens again to get a sharpie and just write "no needles/ no bp" really big on my arm. They were GREAT during diep, though...signs on wall and outside room.

Nihahi - yes, this morning SUCKED...I am not a morning girl anway. I think your explanation of surgical swelling vs LE swelling is spot on. I see the LE doc on Thursday...looking forward to it....great people. Your compression experiment on the bike is very interesting. Keep us posted. Hope you find out all kinds of good stuff tomorrow.

Sbelizabeth - thank you so much for the Robin update! We are all sort of amazing science experiments, aren't we? I hope she feels up to giving it all another go when she is able. I was a "uniboob" for 18 months after my mx. It has it's own difficulties, but it's doable. I hope she feels good about at least some of her result. No heels for me either....you are envied. My feet have suffered the most from chemo and Femara...very painful most of the time. If I wear heels I totally pay for it the next day.

Liefie - thank goodness for your good check up!

Shechirple - still no swimming for me, either :( soon, I hope!

Ok, so I went to the Komen event...a race training kick off event sponsored by a local sports/running shoe store. It was very nice. The inventor of The Cushy (www.thecushy.com) spoke. I signed up for the training group. Tuesdays and Thursdays starting July 30. I am scared lol!

Lastly, Marty - so happy to hear you are 28 years out. That is awesome. You were very young when dx...I am glad it was found!

    Gnite ladies!

ebelizabeth, my DIL had same issue with each baby, and by the time she left the hospital the swelling was all gone.  It's amazing.  I am glad the chairs are getting put to good use still. Is there a full moon soon.  That should bring that baby into the world. You better figure out a way to post pics of that sweetie when he/she is born. We all need a dose of cuteness around here.

BTW, did the chairs help you after surgery?

Nihani, it's amazing what I have done in the name of comfort these days.  It just seems like everything I buy must make me comfortable, or make life easier, or I don't want it.  I am going to have to give up my big purses for small cross body bags soon.  I see that coming.

Gina and Goldie thanks for the links!

I am on a "no buy" for bras right now...I just purchased 4 of those Bali bras and I have 2 old wireless bras in my drawers already, plus the tons of sports bras I had from post surgery.

Now I want to wait til DIEP is done to get my new size!

Goldie, I might have to go Kohls shopping for that chair. I have no outdoor loungers, I'm 5' 11 and curled up on my outdoor love seat (covered deck) for the fresh air to nap during my "lost" chemo days....I was REALLY uncomfortable! I might have a hard time justifying the purchase as I don't think it will be til fall for my DIEP, but, there is usually an Indian summer in NY, right? :)

    Bailey,

Your DH sounds are protective as mine.  After my BMX my IV started to swell, and it became so painful I was crying.  He made such a stink they had that thing out in no time, even though they kept saying they needed doctors orders.  He fianlly got a smart nurse who saw my arm, and got that thing out ASAP.  Before he left that night, which was late, he called my nurse in a told her not to let anybody wake me up for any reason.  I needed to sleep.  They left me alone till 6 am.  That is a record.  I vaguely remember the nurse checking on me, but she never touched me.

Goldie, I didn't find the chairs until months after my DIEP.  I sat in one at Costco and HAD to have one.  They're heavenly.  There's a very chic spa place in town that does pedicures with their clients in the real thing--leather upholstery, electric reclining.  The few times I can afford a pedicure there I force myself to stay awake so I don't pay $$$ for a nice nap.

You know, a gazillion years ago when I worked in labor & delivery, it wasn't the full moon that brought pregnant women flocking in, it was storms.  Let a few inches of snow tumble down and everyone's water breaks.  Very odd.

I'm also in the no-buy zone for bras.  I have two that I can wear, both leftover from the silicone foob days, and until I get to the promised Stage II Barbie-doll shape, I'm saving my money for La Pearla.  But I HAVE started wearing dresses for the first time in a long time.  They just skim over my flat gut like two babies never lived there.  My problem here is that the gut looks good...now what about the bags under the eyes, the dimples on the fanny, the sagging neck?  It's like putting in granite countertops and realizing they make the rest of the house look old and tacky.

Bailey, I had some zingy neuropathy with the TAC chemo, and most of that faded away.  They feel burney once in a while, but not bad. When I was on Xeloda, a couple of toes peeled off a whole layer of skin, leaving naked, wet, red, little piggies.  Thank goodness, those days are behind me, but the Xeloda probably also lead to this huge, melted-down radiation scar on my back.

Tired now.  I believe I'll mince my way up to bed.

Marty- yahoo on 28 way to go!

Sweetpickle - totally understand where you are coming from. I was overweight before chemo gained because of dumb steriods and now just trying to lose it all. Tummy is pretty good other than by the incision where the iron plate is. Cheer up we can try to get through it together. Also, saw you on the triple negative site didn't realize we are both triple neg, hmmm.

So funny about all the bra talk because I swear I have spent about 200 dollars in the past week trying to find one bra to fit and feel good. I was 38D before and asked to go smaller and I swear I am like a 44 D now!? Hope to goodness sake I am swollen still. Has anyone else had the problem of when they wear a bra your breastbone starts to ache terribly where I have to take it off asap?

I can't keep up with you ladies!

Yes, I have the pink bracelets and I was told to mark up my arms with permanent markers AND wear my compression garments to the hospital. My PS's PA and the anesthesiologist I met with seem to respect lymphedema; not everyone does, sadly. It will be a lot easier to get the sleeves on w/o a hand/arm IV, so that's a good thing. Damiana, I hope I am like you re:LE!

Liefie, so glad your checkup went well.

    The anti-gravity chair sounds cool!

No compression for my gloobs after surgery. Can't think about bras yet, but I do have Coobies which have been pretty comfortable.

Sweetpickle, good to know the neck IV was comfortable.

Geesh, with thinking about LE, IVs, throat tubes (I need a small one) and puking, I haven't had time to think about the actual surgery! I am in a calm place, really, believe it or not. Ready to go! I did scrape my leg while bike riding but no infection so it's all good.

SB....."mince my way up to bed" .......lol.......are you still wearing the red stilettos? ;). Any baby news this evening? I am the proud Gma to 5 ankle-biters......NEVER a dull moment! Much better than being a parent, for sure........

Re-Root canal now in my rear view mirror......and the left side of my face feels like I've been sucker-punched......but as mentioned earlier, entirely doable after DIEP...... The Endodontist asked me if I wanted nitrous to relax me.....I said "I'm good.....I've been through the war already......" :)

Faith-hope you are resting comfortably after a successful Stage 2.........

Jeannie and JLbloom.....try to relax tomorrow.......soon you'll be joining us Vets on the "Other Side". :)

Like so many of you, I fully believe in the restorative power of Yoga......but I am taking it slow.....a good friend of mine just tore her rotator cuff moving from one pose to another.....surgery is def. in her future! I don't want to go down that road! Am taking it slow, but stretching and toning is def. good for the mind and body! :)

No more excuses for me.....tooth is fixed...tomorrow I get back in the saddle and do 10 miles ........ Walking........

Love you all and very grateful we have each other!

Namaste and God Bless - Jackie

Hey ladies so stage two went great yesterday. Im already feeling pretty pleased with my results though I won't know how the fipples look until dressings come off in a week. Im not having trouble sleeping at all unlike last time Im just up trying to stay ahead of thw pain meds. I am having a bit more pain than I felt last time. There is one area that he did lipo and removed necrosis that is solely where the pain lingers after taking meds and right where it begins when meds start to hit the 4 hr mark. Strangely enough that is my right side (bc side)

I know it will be great in a day or so when the pain lessens a bit. There is plenty of bruising also which believe it or not I had absolutely none of in stage 1.

Goldie I need a like button for the zero gravity chair I hadn't thought of that but it sounds brilliant! I've used one camping before but never purchaced one before ...is that amazon account still open on here ;)

Marty a huge congratulatory hug goes out to you !!!!

Jeannie 57 you will do great Im sure ! Before you know it all this worry will be nothing but a memory. I had to have an I've in the ankle as well and they gave me a bit of numbing in that area before putting it in. As far as nausea goes im with ya DIEP sis. If they don't mention it go ahead and ask for the patch behind the ear it works wonders and they also can give a little extra anti nausea med in the IV at the same time. Good luck to you we will all be in your pocket ♥

Thank you ladies for thinking of me yesterday it truely means a lot to know you have a cheering section. I wish I could figure out how to post a pic here to show that sign my friend made its too funny and my wording didn't do it justice nihahi you've posted pic before I think is it easy am I just missing something?

Gini thank you so much for the private messages I know that took time out of your busy sched and it meant a great deal to hear about your stage ll since we share the same doc. There was a women in the recovery room next to me who also had dr carty and I swore she was on the thread at one time also but the curtain was drawn , I was heavily druged and I didn't want to invade anyones privacy.

Ladies what happened to Robin? I tried looking back but I'm definitely missing it.

Well im off to bed again good night ladies

    Good Morning,

Thanks for all the bra tips! Some of this stuff is harder to find in Canada but there are lots of options. Yesterday my mom and I went bra shopping, and those changing rooms are so unforgiving, that I just brought six bras to try on at home. Luckily, one of them fit.  I think my new shopping strategy is 'Buy everything', and try it at home.

Goldie - The zero gavity chair is brilliant! My sister gave me hers while I'm convalescing. And I think bringing it inside is a fabulous idea, goes well with stretchy pants and slippers. If you really wanted to go totally trashy, you can haul your big screen TV and beer fridge our to the front lawn.

Pattysmiles - I don't believe in 'justifying purchases' anymore. Not this year anyway. We need some rewards, and I think you deserve the lounger.

Faith - What a wonderful post you wrote last night. You sound so stong, and positive. Yay!

Jeannie & jbloom -  Tomorrow is the big day! And by the weekend you'll be looking back at it as the thing that you didn't have to be so worried about. Remember, these surgeons are so skilled at what they  do, and our bodies are so smart at sending blood, and oxygen, and healing and energy to the places tht need it the most, so just have a lovely nap and let your mind rest while your body, and the wondeful medical staff do what they do best.

Bailey - I like what you said about us all being 'Amazing Science Experiments'. It's so true.

Nihahi - You certainly are our one of our Medical-y Yoga-y Mother Hen-ny Cheerleader-y thoughtful-y ladies. I love your explanations.

sbelizabeth - I had to re-read twice when you said you were 'tired, and off to bed'. You don't strike me as someone who gets tired!

Sweetpickle - I went through the 3-4 week blues as well. I was trying to be fake/cheerful, but Jim kept telling me that I seemed really down. Recovery was going so well, but then I lost momentum, and instead of being someone on the recovery highway, I was just hunched over lady with a shark bite across the tummy and two big nipleless lumps where my perfectly perky breast used to be. And even though I can sneak off on my bicycle, I can't walk my dog, or work, or wear my pants,  or join my friends at the cottage, or SWIM!

I took the train to visit my mom this week. She's 80 but you'd never know it. On the way home, we went to the 'pre-boarding' area that was full of seniors. I was the youngest one there, and seemingly fit and healthy.  When it came time to get on the train, I was the one walking empty handed, and my mom was the one shlepping all the bags. She walked me onto the train, got me settled in my chair, and ordered the attendant to look after me. Go Violet Go!

I was also telling my mom all about some of the experiences I've read on these boards. I started by saying 'Some of my friends have an iron tummy too'.  She was shocked, and said 'How many of your friends have had the DIEP?'. I told her  'about 30'.  Her face was priceless. Then I realized that she probably thought it was my whole graduating class of '83 - when in fact, my friends are you gals.

Have a lovely day everyone. Janet

One more thing - and I'm sorry to be rambling. But for all those who haven't had surgery - if you read that bit about the three week blues - and my whining - it's just temporary. In my heart of hearts I know that I did the right thing, and that my scar will fade and my body will be amazing - because it's all mine - and it's healthy.

Jeannie - I think that the neck iv may not interfere with the lymph nodes much.  In my case, I have gone in with an iv in my arm and woken with it in my neck.  I think they prefer to put it in the neck while you are out.  I have been fortunate to avoid lymphadema unless I am flying in an airplane, but the veins in my left arm are very scarred and it is difficult to gain access. I think what i am suggesting is that the neck may be less of a potential hazard than imagined.  I do completely understand your concerns - the IV worries me much more than the surgery.  You will do well on Thursday.

Jeannie... I had all the usual nausea drugs and a patch behind my ear for 3 days. I have never felt so good after surgery as I did this time. Nausea was not even an issue which was so nice because of all the other stuff going on after a DIEP.

I had an extra foot IV and an arterial line put in while I was under. Neither was a problem.

Today's is 3 weeks post op for me and I feel I am walking worse. My breast is great, no problems except brusing and the sunburny thing.

My abdomen is very uncomfortable. Sometimes I feel like I will go insane from bra and compression garments 24/7. I wonder if they have a clue about the torture they inflict! I've sprung 2 leaks in my scar and seem to be having fluid build up. This fluid build up bothers me most because i don't want this tummy growing. lol.

They put me back on antibiotics yesterday because of redness and infection at the site of one of my new openings. Boo hoo. I gotta get going here! I go to Hawaii in 2 weeks and back to school in 3. Yesterday I was actually down enough to think that maybe I wouldn't be able to go back to work in 3 weeks.

Maybe I need to cut out laundry, cooking, grocery shopping, and cleaning! Ya think! I know mother nahahi is going to give me a big frown here, but I just feel the DH and DS are tired of seeing me sitting in a recliner. I've never been good at asking for help.

Good wishes to all those coming up. I'm still glad I did this! It is worth it!

Great idea on the zero gravity chair! I've seen them at Walmart and almost got one but didn't think I would spend much time outside in the heat. Never thought if bringing it inside the house!

Faith so glad that your surgery went well. I understand about being in pain. My ps told me that lipo hurts and you get very bruised, but the good thing is that it shouldn't last more than a week!

Sbelizabeth, you crack me up about your stories. I often think if I could do eye lift during my stage 2, but DH already told me that he will divorce me if I touch my face😞

Movie glad that your tooth experience wasn't too bad. I can't stand going to the dentist. To me the dentist is like veggies, I just don't like them!

My friend just had a baby and I will be taking care of her when she goes back to work. I cannot wait!!! I just love babies!

I think most of my problem is Im not in my own home, I have six people, two dogs and a cat living in about 1000 square feet. We are in the middle of moving so it will be a few more weeks until we get into our house. Im over it to be honest but I do feel better physically every day.

Im so freaking bored its crazy but I cant spend any money because we are saving to get into our house and need three months rent upfront. We have two so just one more to go. Bleh!

My crankiness comes and goes througout the day, an hour from now I could be estatic. Just call me Sybil. LOL

Morning all...caffeine has finally kicked in.

"Mother Nihahi"......too funny! Mammalou...I LOVE my hubby, but I can guarantee, if HE had been sliced from hip to hip, and had body parts shifted, tubes in and out, sleep deprived, etc.....I'd be looking at a whole lot longer than 3 weeks of recovery from the deep depths of helplessness on his part!!!!!! Lord, help me, I just shudder when he sneezes, cause I know what's coming! You are doing just fine....ask for the damn help...you've got good reason too.If you want to hop on a plane to Hawaii in two weeks, you'd better be doing less of the chores, more of the "what your body needs" thing!!!!! There....mother, over and out!

sbelizabeth....I had an art. line too. Apparently here it is more common than not, but I do have issues with low bp during anesthesia. Hmmm.....do you think that is why they seemed to overload me with fluids???? How's the tootsies today....flipflops maybe??? I'm with you on the "granite countertops when the rest of the house is peeling linoleum"! Mental picture of what could be....not pretty! I'm leaving as much as I can - original issue!

Kuka....I'm with hubby....you have a lovely face, don't be messing with it!!!!

    Faith...great to hear from you

    Janet...LOVE your posts!

gini.....let us know how badly your sister kills you with the pilates!!!!

    can't mention everyone.....gotta dash.

Movie.....As busy as you are...should've done the nitro!!!!! Relaxation is underrated, imho!!!!

    Later ladies

Sbelizabeth, I also had an arterial line. I've never had any problems with blood pressure. They told me is what they do for DIEP since its such a long surgery. It never bothered me though. In fact the day after surgery I asked my nurses to take my arm iv out and leave the one on my neck for fluids and medicine. I wish they would do that one every time. I can't stand iv's on my arm. They always seem to get on my way!

Thanks "mom"! Need a straightening out once in awhile!

Selizabeth... I, too, have low blood pressure and seem to have a lot of bradycardia with surgery. They also pumped me sooooo full of fluids doing surgery. My DD, the nurse, was there and heard them commenting on all the fluids and she was surprised by the amount. Of course, I was puffed up for days and my hands were numb.

I just chuckled while in the hospital cause every time they took my bp it was low. They get a weird look on their face and they keep taking it until they get it over 90. Then they happily record it and move on. Of course, every time I go to MO or BS the top number is somewhere around 150. They never comment on that.

Got a housekeeper today, so I'm hiding out in bed for 4 hours. Then I get to come out and have it all clean. Nice....

Greengirl- when I first woke from DIEP, I thought why did I do this? I am very glad that I did. It feels natural. Right is bigger than the left right now but will be adjusted in stage 2. The breasts look a little alarming while the circle of belly skin is there. Just remember it is a process and the end result will look much better. I can't wait for stage 2 to look "normal". My recovery took 6 weeks-but I had BMX with immediate reconstruction so I was on the table 12 hours and then had a complication w the right flap so I had to go back to OR.

I had no adaptive equipment after surgery and slept in my bed w many pillows. I needed someone w me for the first 3 weeks and then was more independent.

Everyone is different but I think most would say its worth it.

    Best of luck to you!

Nihahi ! I think I forgot to mention to you that I asked my PS about the increase in swelling with the increase of activity and intensity. He said that was perfectly normal and I believe he said the reason was due to friction of muscle tissue etc and also mentioned that I should be wearing my compression while exercising.

Mammalou, please take it easy,  You want to go to Hawaii, don’t you?  Rest rest rest.

Movie, glad your tooth was taken care of.  I hate tooth aches and dentists.

Jeannie, it’s all going to be good.  Remember?  It’s all good.  That’s what I keep telling myself.

Ebelizabeth, I bet you didn’t even think about the bags under your eyes till very recently.  Well, maybe before BC, but not during. I know I haven’t.  But, I hope to get well enough to care about it again. I hope we all get well enough to be vain again.  And, maybe I will get an eyelift someday, now just give me boobs. For now, when my eyes are swollen, I keep two tablespoons in the freezer and I put them on my eyes in the morning.  Works great.   I saw the leather version of the zero gravity chairs on the Relax Your Back website.  They start at around $1800.  Lmaooooo

Janet, great idea!  My neighbors would love it!

Kuka, you are too young to do stuff to your face. You are young, and lovely,  You got 20 years before you need to worry about that stuff.

Will never catch up posting to everybody - too much going on - but I do read every post every day.

Marty, a belated congrats on your 28 years out. That is so wonderful, and I wish that for everybody on this thread. What did you do to celebrate?

Nihahi, I so hear you about men being sick. They just cannot handle it. Years ago DH once twisted his ankle on the tennis court. At home he went straight to bed with his foot propped up on 4 pillows, moaning and groaning like a wounded buffalo. He wanted me to sit there holding his hand, serving him meals in bed etc. etc. I had a very hard time keeping a straight face, and being sympathethic, because it was just so ridiculous. What a good thing men cannot have babies. They will all die of pain during childbirth, and the human race would have been wiped out long ago. LOL.

Have to run. Having a training session just now with DH's secretary who's going on holiday next week, and I will be doing her job. Stressful, because everything is computerized, and I don't feel very comfortable with it. Have done it before, and got through it by hook or by crook. That clinic is like a pressure cooker with lots of things happening simultaneously, and I'm used to a peaceful, quiet existence at home by myself . . . Will just hope for the best.

Got my herceptin today- the nurse that was doing my blood draw told me about a girl that was there for her chemo that was going to get DIEP and was really having a hard time deciding things and not getting the info she wanted from doctors- so the nurse wanted me to talk to her. She is probably going to get hers from the same PS as Kuka- so I told her she was in really good hands :) Before my infusion, I had an appointment with the NP. I told her that I had a hematoma, so she asked to see it. Her jaw fell on the floor when she saw it. She seemed really worried about it. I guess it's a good thing that most of my upper body is numb- otherwise they might have to really knock me out on some pain meds to deal with this hematoma.

I got a surgery date 10/2/13. I asked if it was too far out, the scheduler saisd she would email the docs. BS said that was too long and we could do it in two stages. I am not keen on TE, it just feels like a bad idea for me. So now I don't know what I'm doing.

Have surgery at the hospital I work at and just have BMX. Think about DIEP later. I really want most of it done at one shot.

Scheduler said she will call me back tomorrow, maybe PS has an opening sooner.

    Hi Ladies.

    I too missed Robin's post?

Had my pelvic CT Scan with contrast dye Monday. Had a reaction to the dye apparently.

:( My throat got really tight, and I was dizzy. So, they flushed the dye out with a few bags of saline solution, and gave me water and benadryl. My vitals were good, so after watching me for 2 hours they sent me home.  Tuesday I had the feeling of a weight on my chest which scared me, so they perscribed prednisone, but told me to just take benadryl if I could handle it and give it another day. Feeling a lot better today but a bit woozy. Glad I waited on the prednisone-So many people have told me horror stories about that. But if I would have needed it, I'd have tried it. I don't need any issues with surgery approaching!

I got nervous because I've never had a reaction like that before. And I knew I was going to be having some sort of dye injected the day before my surgery, but I'm told that dye is similar to the MRI dye, which I had no problems with.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I had no rash or hives which was odd coupled with the throat tightness apparently.

I have a dental cleaning coming up pre-surgery! Hopefully nothing is amiss!

HA! I have my zero gravity chair in my living room right now....I figure I'll throw a nice comforter over it and plop myself in there with some help! It took me a long time to figure out how to push back in it-I felt so dumb-but I finally tried with my feet too and that worked! I'm short and have a low center of gravity, which I think was the issue! lol
