DIEP 2013

Actually, Nihahi, I think I am getting more out of my personal trainer than the PT now. She can get me to fire my abs in all sorts of exercises whether i am wearing compression or not. It is really interesting. Although I am still numb over a good bit of my front abdominal region (pubic to navel) I can feel it working. The fun part is trying to unlearn old compensations. And she is working really hard on my glutes and thighs in prep for my next stage when there will be thigh lipo.
-
Goldie- I have an abdominal binder that has velcro closure- I coudn't even come close to being able to wear that while I had the drains in. It would have felt nice for my back to be able to wear it but since I was mostly just sitting anyway, I didn't worry about it.
-
Marty, why do you need to lose the fatty tissue on the thighs when the doc is going to lipo them? For stage 2, I will have some fat grafting to even out some bumpy area on my BC side where the notes were taken. I told my ps that I want to use my inner thighs as donor sites, so I thought that I would need to preserve them
Nihahi, 24 weeks post op, I still feel the need to wear my binder when playing tennis. My ab-muscle is prety strong, but I feel that I need the binder to tie the piece of flesh (aka the iron plate) that has no feeling on to those muscles so it will move with me instead of falling off to the floor...
-
Goldie - my PS did not have me start compression until drains came out. Have you asked yours yet what he/she recommends?
-
Oh Nihahi you ARE one of our "medical-ly" gurus! Thanks for your very valuable opinion.
I am going to go to yoga-pilates fusion in the morning! Kick me now - my sister teaches it but her studio is a few towns over (about 25 minutes) and only in the morning once a week so when the girls are home it's tough to get there, and during the school year rather impossible. Hoping to jet over after camp drop-off tomorrow! After reading Marty's post I think I really should make her come over and give me a set of excercises to do. Stupid that I am wasting such a valuable resource, right?
-
oh lordy....falling onto the floor "iron plate"....mental picture is not good
!
Just got back from a bike ride. I measured before I left, wore my compression garment under my bike shorts, tried to stay aware of my abs (when I wasn't gasping for air going up a couple hills), measured when I got home. OK, yes, I drank a fair bit of water......but I think an inch gain in an hour and a half is a bit much!!!!! Bonus of wearing the garment...skin didn't get as hypersensitive in the "plate region". I'll be quizzing the doc tomorrow on how long he thinks this is going to go on for me. It'll be interesting to compare the response to what you all have already shared.
Gini....awesome sister you have....yes....why haven't you utilized her before....even better, private lessions sound just marvelous....hope you are on good terms, sister-wise, or she could be worse than kuka's mad trainer!!!! (just kidding
.
-
LMAO Nihahi - we are on good terms, but our schedules don't usually match up well even though we live 5 minutes from each other... She goes to work early in the morning, comes home to nap sometimes when she can, and then works late into the evening. During the summer it's not as bad, but when I'm working and driving kids all over after school, it's nearly impossible. We call her the "drill sergeant" - so even those who are on the best of terms with her are in for it big time when she's calling the shots!
Before she opened her own studio - way back when DD #2 was born and I was on maternity leave and she had way more time - she whipped me into great shape! I was better then - right after the baby - than I have been for the past 10 years! For those who have been to Maui, she used to be a trainer at the Grand Wailea! I'll pass on any words of wisdom she gives me... So far our brief conversation was something along the lines of - "Planks - forwards, sideways, everyways!"
-
I had my pre op clinic today and we are all systems go for surgery! Now I wait! Only 12 more days! Holy crap! Where did the time go? I feel like I'm ready in terms of what to take, what to have at the house, clothes etc. I am more than ready in my head, now I just have to get there!
-
Tammy - not trying to "lose" the fat on the thighs. I am saving that for the doc & lipo. I am working on building muscles in my glutes and quads so I can do the potty squat after the lipo when going to the potty can be a big owie for the first few days. At 61, I find that getting back in shape is a really good thing.
Many of us DIEP girls actually end up with a lovely figure that we continue to work hard to keep. I think of it as a sort of do-over. Part of the price we pay for cancer. Gotta have benefits!
By the way, for all of you who are struggling and don't really see an end to this whole cancer thing, it really is there. And the memory does dim. Hopefully you will, do as I do, and carry the funny stuff with you and leave behind the bad and hurtful things. Tomorrow is my 28th cancerversary.
-
I am so looking forward to having this in my rear view mirror! I felt sore and achy today so I thought wearing a bra might help and it did for a short period of time and then it started to irritate me. I am bummed because of my weight and Im trying hard to buld up to getting in shape but I was out of shape for so long before cancer and then chemo added twenty pounds to my butt. Ugh! Im just down today, I want to be like you fabulous in shape and working out ladies! :-)
Thanks for listening to me whine, I know Ill get there someday, just hard to see the end. -
Marty- OMG, that is awesome, congrats!
-
faith - hope stage 2 was good to you today. My PS has not mentioned stage 2.
Jeannie - in case I don't get on here tomorrow, hang tough I'll be virtually looking for you.
Bluebird - your recliner sounds like a great buy.
Thanks for all the support and prayers everyone. It's so good to hear from you veterans.
May God bless and keep you all!
-
Congratulations martyj....hope you do something fun and celebratory tomorrow!
Sweetpickle....I know it seems hard but you're still early on, and just remember, those of us that seem to be doing alot, all were just where you are now. The "road" back, starts slowly, with baby steps. You'll get there too.
Faith, hope things went well for you today.
Jeannie and jlbloom, our thoughts are with you...this time tomorrow, you'll likely be veterans, starting the recovery process.
Sherry....you'll get there...try to do something fun and relaxing during the wait! -
Marty- Congrats DIEP sister! That is amazing.
-
Marty- that is awesome! Congrats! Do something special for yourself to celebrate!
-
Hooray for Marty! So wonderful!

I went to Kohls today because they had the Zero Gravity chairs on sale for 60 percent off, plus another 15 percent with coupon! Whoop whoop!!! Anyway, while I was there I came across a new bra. So comfortable. It's the Bali Comfort Revolution Bra (1 Flexible Bra), it has light padding for shaping (I still have expander's), and it fits like a sports bra, but it has clasps in the back. It has nice wide straps for comfort, and it doesn't come up too high on sides that it digs in arms pits, but it is not low enough to create back fat. It comes in every color you can imagine. I am normally a 34b, and I got the medium. I have had this bra on for hours, and usually I can't wait to take all my clothes as soon as I walk in the door. Give it a try. Especially from Kohls. They will take it back no questions asked if you don't like it.
-
Goldie,
I was in kohls walking through their bra department for AN HOUR last week looking for a non underwire bra. I found a very small number of bras and none of them were worked for me.
On my LAST walk around, this time on the outer aisle as I was leaving that department I found a Bali bra I liked!
It is also called Bali Comfort Revolution,...but that I must be their new terminology because this is NOT a sport type bra...it is a "regular" bra. Comes in sizes!
Bali style number 3463...wait I just pulled up the link and it is a "full figure" bra. I hardly think of my 40B as a full figure... Anyhow here is the link.

My plastic surgeon had recommended a Hanes barely there bra....I don't think I found that. I did hear walmart has some good bras at good prices, I don't know if they have the Hanes barely there.
Pat -
Ok, so I had to check out Hanes website, I must have the name of the bra wrong.
Anyhow, here are wire free bras from Hanes. I much prefer tomtrynon in stores though. Anyone try these, and if so what store?

Pat -
High 5 Marty! Here is to the next 28 years!!!
-
Ok so I cannot get the yoga for breast cancer DVD in Canada. I tried amazon.ca, chapters/indigo, eBay, and kijiji. I can't get it! Boo:(
-
Patty, here is the link to the one I found. Yours looks very comfortable too.
I own several of the Barely There Bras, but you are fairly large cup, and the Barely There bras are comfortable, but very little support.
When I get my foobs, I will give your Bali bra a try too. Isn't it wonderful how bra companies are really thinking about comfort these days, and colors that allow us to show the bras. There were time (pre bmx) that I would wear a sports bra under a tank that was too low, or t-back and let the bra show. It was one of my favorite way to dress in this hot summer heat. I am hoping by next summer I will be back to that.
-
Patty
Here are the Barely There Bras. They have changed them. You use to be able to buy one, now you have to buy a two pack. I think they are going the way of the Genie Bra, and the Ah Bra. Honesly, Barely There are comfy, but I don't know about this new style.

Yay, Marty! Your news encourages us all!
My surgery is actually the day after tomorrow, Thursday, Nihahi. I feel ready. I'm more worried about the IVs than anything else----either ankles or neck. Ugh. Not sure neck is a good idea with all those lymph nodes up there. Since it's possible it's the ankles, i have to take off my pretty pink toenail polish.( I'll have my daughter paint it back on! They are going to throw everything at me to try to stave off nausea.
I don't comment on all the posts but I read everything and care about each of you! I have learned so much from you all and appreciate your support so much! -
BTW...whoever recommended the Zero Gravity chair, thank you. I have a recliner, but you wouldn't call it portable. I know the Zero Gravity chair is meant to be an outdoor chair, and it seems a little trashy to have a yard chair in the house, but I fell asleep in it for 2 hours this afternoon, when I only meant to sit for a few minutes to see how it felt. I can fold it up, and put it away, and it sure is great for watching TV. So, during recovery I have another option other than the recliner.
-
Marty, you inspire us all. Happy 28th!
-
Oops....sorry about jumping the date ahead, Jeannie and jlbloom.....brain must of had a "senior moment"!!!!
Goldie.......not trashy at all. Like the stretchy pants and zip front tops, it sounds "flapper chic" to me!!!! -
Yeah, Sherry! You're almost there!
Totally agree, Marty - gotta get the "perks" where we can...! Congratulations on your cancerversary! 28 years - holy crp that is incredible... Very inspiring for us newbies!!!!
I found a couple of Warner's bras at Marshall's that were shaping and wire free. I can't tell from this which ones they are, but go here and click "wire free"...
http://www.warners.com/brasThere's even one that says "side support" !! Perfect for the side boobage!
Of course I look like these models now... lolololol
Hang in there Sweetpickle, soon enough you'll have it all in the rear view!
Ok ladies I'm hitting the sack - almost midnight on the east coast! (Makes me think of that scene in Monsters Inc - "East Coast coming on-line!")
Lots of gentle hugs to Faith in her stage 2 recovery, and as always to Robin, too.
Jeannie
-
Jeanie- I had an arm and neck IV and I barely noticed the neck one. They took it out either the day after or two days after, kinda fuzzy memory there. Good luck with your surgery!
-
I bought two zero-gravity lawn chairs at the Costco, and now my DIL is borrowing one of them to un-swell her poor feeties. I think her toes would leak if she trimmed her nails. Think labor-ish thoughts!
