What are you doing for fun??

Alesta29 - loving the scarf look, when I can get to a pc I shall put my new scarf look up as my avatar too, paclitaxol sent me mostly bald this time. What I don't understand is why the rest of it itches so much (or why it stays on my legs for so much longer than on my head!!)
For fun I am on holiday in Croatia :-)
I had to stay at home for chemo so my sister took the kids and headed out before us then hubby and I flew out on Wednesday after my chemo on tuesday. It is so beautiful here, warm, but breezy so comfortable to lounge around and read, snooze, chat. We are in a villa which is not to posh (very family friendly and a little bit scruffy) with a private pool & views out over the sea - just perfect! This evening we walked to the local village restaurant and had the most amazing meal. It has been ages since I have enjoyed food. Awake with the steroids now but I know I can snooze all day tomorrow so it doesn't matter. Dd2 wants to go food shopping at the local market (she's turning into quite the little cook) so I think I will get up for that then come back to a long, long nap. If I can't then my sister says she will take her instead.
My sister found, booked and organised it all for us, she is just the best sister/aunty I could wish for :-D

Laurie, you look very cute in that scarved look! I had one that I tied on the side like that too.
Tillycat, Croatia in the former Yugoslavia? Never been there but my ex is from Macedonia...I love it there...been four times.
Went on a motorcycle ride with my cousin today. Beautiful day...rode through hills and past farms, lakes, ponds.... -
Since i am a geek and it is my line of work... I play World of Warcraft and kill things
-
I have a doctor appointment this afternoon at Dana Farber in Boston, then we are meeting good friends at a Russian restaurant nearby. It's part of my plan to "dine around the world".
Tillycat - anything that involves both a pool and oceanviews is a winner in my book! Enjoy!
Scarves look silly on me, I have a very short neck and I haven't found very many ways to wear one that doesn't accentuate the problem. Too bad, they are so in style!
-
Scarves make me feel like little red riding hood, or Rita Tushingham. I'm showing my age.
So, this weekend is our festival. I walk over there and through it most evenings. Sunday, my daughter and her family are coming up for a barbeque. Sunday night is the fireworks. Seems like the entire town attends. Everyone sits on the beach and watches the sky. Its second to Christmas eve, so I'll be out there.

I took my 8 year old grandson to Busch Gardens and Water Country USA in Williamsburg lastl week. We stayed at a nice hotel thanks to Capital One miles. We rode every roller coaster he was tall enough to ride and I even did it with my eyes wide open. It was so much fun watching his joy. Ended up with blisters on both feet but I did it .... lots of walking, climbing those towers to ride the tubes down the water slides, and just loved being with him. The pass they give to handicapped really helped cut down on my wait time for the rides. I would check in and sometimes they'd let us right on but sometimes they'd say come back in half an hour. Then I could go somewhere and have a drink and wait til my time sitting in the shade. We were able to ride lots more rides than if we had had to wait in the long lines. Boy, this 61 year old gray haired lady got some looks when we rode the roller coasters. I think Thomas will remember this trip with his grandma for the rest of his life! What's next? Sept 7-8 a weekend at the beach with a group of my church girlfriends, then Florida to visit my mom in October. Will also see a couple of my old college friends whilel I'm there and attend my sisters 45th High School Reunion with her. We're only a year apart so I know lots of her friends, too. Planning to cross Ireland off my bucket list in November. Laurie, will it be too cold? Planning on Nov 9-17. Nothing planned for December yet but I'm sure I'll come up with something. Love reading of everyone's adventures. Having chemo only every 4 weeks gives me lots of play time. When I try to wear scares, I look like a little girl trying to play grown up. LOL.

Hi, I haven't posted on here before but I have really enjoyed reading about what everyone is doing to have a good time! I was diagnosed last year with stage 4 and am coming to terms with life at it is now. I feel well and continue to work part time. This I enjoy it and it helps take my mind off hospital visits and treatments. My way of enjoying myself is to take my dogs for long walks every day. Keeps me fit too. Enjoy going shopping with my daughter until she drags me into T K- Max. I get bored after about 20 minutes! I love walking though and 4 weeks ago, my friend and I climbed Mount Snowdon in Wales and raised £550 for the local Breast care unit. We didn't ask for sponsors until a week before so we were quite pleased with that and I actually got a hug off the breast surgeon! She asked "What next?" We said maybe Ben Nevis. Ha Ha. I am 64 next week and Ben Nevis is harder to climb but you never know.

Finally done with the move that has been taking over my life for the last 6 months. DH is doing much better so my caregiver duties are lessening. Finally am getting a break to have some fun.
Went to a concert and a gals lunch.
Having a romantic dinner tonight with DH to celebrate our 11 year anniversary.
Getting active with the kids. Volunteered to be a referee and maybe assistant coach for the kiddy soccer teams.
VERY excited to have been selected to participate in a Casting for Recovery retreat at the end of September. I get to have a weekend up in the country, learn to fly fish and bond with some of my fellow BC survivors.
-
JustSue,
I am so pleased to hear that your move is completed. Here's to wishes that your last year's nightmare is now behind you.

Glenna, Your grandson is going to hold all those times you two had together in his heart for life. So special, isn't it? Your pretty brave too. I can't go on rollercoasters, fear of heights
I did manage to go down a huge slide in a sack with my grandaughter when she was Thomas's age. Never would have done it for my kids, but I'll do anything for her

Haven't been on this thread for a while, but so happy to read everyone's happy times.
My younger dd will be married this coming June. Since we have already nailed down some arrangements, it is becoming quite real. Well the biggest reality of all has happened. Wedding gown shopping! Both dd's, her future MIL, future SIL and even baby F. ( and me, of course) went along for the momentous occasion. It was just like Say Yes to the Dress, minus the dramaQuite unreal to see my " baby" in a wedding gown. The consultant was very spot on in pulling dresses that she liked and that suited her, based on pics she had of dresses she liked. And finally, she said "Yes"! We were all in tears as everyone agreed that it was the one. Ordered veil and crystal tiara ( low profile, more like a very embellished headband) too. Now have to wait several months for it to come in and then any needed alterations will be done. Agh, now I have to get a mother of the bride gown! Can I get a Mazel Tov? Caryn

It is so nice to read these post, so happy that everyone has something to do that keep their mind of cancer. I work full time as an IT Analyst, and two months ago I just started a home based business for wedding/events rental, I do wedding decorations from centerpieces to floral decorations etc.., this keeps me busy during my free time and I make money out of it. It makes me feel good and energize everytime I do setup a wedding :-)

Mazel Tov, Caryn.

Sweet angel,
What a happy profession! Have fun.

Mazel Tov Caryn!

jas2 - welcome! Sounds like you are doing well, hiking the lovely peaks in England. I'm a hiker as well and would absolutely love to see photos if you get a chance.
Glenna - your trip with your grandson sounds FUN!! In fact, your entire post was awesome and I can't wait to see photos from your upcoming trips.
Just Sue - I'm curious...what is Casting for Recovery? I don't suppose it is related to fly fishing?? There is a thread on the boards about "bucket list" and I have to say fly fishing is probably one of those things I would love to do. Please tell us more.
Caryn - mazel tov!!
-
Nancy,
If you want to fly-fish, Casting for Recovery is your program. Specifically for breast cancer patients... take a look: http://castingforrecovery.org/

p.s. There is a retreat in Washington state in October! http://castingforrecovery.org/wordpress/?page_id=2845

Anybody ever go on the cross country motorcycle conga ride that converges in Wyoming? I don't ride a motorcycle but I thought it would be fun to go to the party. Guess that should be on bucket list too.
-
Hi Nancy,
Thanks again for the welcome. I would love to send you some photos but I'm not sure how to go about it.
-
Caryn, Mazel Tov! I can imagine how proud you are of your daughter.
Ann, great news with that job. You have been missed by your ex-colleagues & you will be back there. Who cares about the numbers
Soleil, I am so happy you are enjoying that book. Definitely would like to hear futher about it sometime.
Glenna, glad you had such a great day with your grandson. My son is almost his age & his best friends are his grandpatents. I can imagine how excited your grandson must have been to share such good time with you.
Laurie, great image with the scarf. Can I find how to do it on the internet? I already have learned a couple of scarf tying on Youtube, but have just seen yours for the first time.
I enjoyed reading all of these posts. Hope I can come up with something fun myself soon. Still in a bit of pain & in the process of absorbing the reality of my dx. It has been a couple of months already, guess I am still able to take a step every couple of weeks -
Re scarves. I went onto YouTube and looked up Afro Caribbean women doing head wraps with short or no hair. Can't remember the woman's name but she has some funky ideas. You just need a long scarf as opposed to a square one and not too silky or it slips. I find cotton or woven ones the best!
-
Thanks a lot Laurie. So Afro Caribbean it is. Will look it up.

I had dinner with some of my old hippie friends last night. My girlfriend and I were waitresses in one of the first coffee shops in Chicago. We were the only shop that had an expresso machine. Not too many people around here know who Abbie Hoffman was ") He was one of our regulars. Stayed out until midnight. Now, I'm up getting ready for " the drive" and I do not care about being tired. Old friends are the best medicine!

Last week we took our kids to Disneyland in los angeles for three days. We have been there a few times before but had not gone for a year. My girls love this place. It was a last minute trip and my fatigue was manageable and did not have any doctor appts or chemo last week so we decided to it when I could. We decided to stay in the park even though we live an hour and a half away because I did not think i could do that everyday. Since it was so last minute, the hotel caused a fortune. But it was worth it. We stayed inside the park so I could take breaks and relax by the pool in the afternoon and was also was in a wheelchair the entire time which helped. There is no way I could walked and stand in lines. With the wheelchair we could use the handicapped line and that was great.
My parents came along also and it was my dad's first trip. The kids had a blast ( they are 8 and 11) and we're finally able to do a fun trip before school started today. There is something about Disney that kids just love. I also did some rides I have never done before as I was too wimpy--i have faced bigger fears now. It was very exhausting but I am happy we did it. When we left, we found out we could upgrade our tickets to an annual pass for twenty dollars a person. I told my dh not to upgrade mine as I would be gone soon but went back when we was doing it to upgrade my ticket also!! -
Good to hear you had such a great time FMG! Hope you'll be having many more and building special memories for all the family!
Lx -
Oh that sound such fun. It lovely to know that they will have those memories forever - they can tell their grandchildren about it (when theme parks no longer exist except in some strange online format)
Did you borrow a wheelchair there or did you have one. My kids would love to go to disney Paris again (we went 5 years ago ) but I can't imagine coping. There are theme parks in the uk but the queuing in the rain ....... :-((

Forgot to say - we are still in Croatia, I tried to keep going without the steroids that the onc sent me here with but last night I had to come back from the restaurant before our starters even arrived. I felt so bad :-( I decided that I was spoiling everyone's holiday (even though they keep saying I'm not) so I took 4 mg first thing this morning. By this afternoon I felt so much better, no pain, no tiredness, no weird dizzyness, we went off to the tourist market in Pula, the kids bought pressies for the grandparents, D2 and I found some cute (and cheap! ) summer dresses and floppy trousers (looked like pj bottoms to me but she thought they were cool) then we went to a cafe and had drinks and ice creams and people watched. The man doing the ice creams made like a cocktail waiter and tossed each scoop up in the air, behind his back etc.
We all had lots of fun. Steroids, hmm, Love them and hate them equally I think

I've had a very hard time finding things to do since I stopped working. At first there were lots of dr's appts. To keep me busy & I wasn't feeling too well from treatment to do much. Now I'm on a different treatment & feeling much better & I have been getting out more. I volunteer at the cancer alliance center one day a week. I have found support groups to help me. I do go to lunch every once in awhile. All my friends work so it's hard. My energy level is not what it used to be especially because of lung mets but I keep pushing myself when I can. You ladies amaze me & inspire me. I will get out more! Thanks for this post.

My husband and I have been enjoying our vacation in Banff and Lake Louise. We've done some hiking, driven to see some gorgeous natural wonders, and enjoyed a lot of good food. The canadians really know how to cook.
In the middle of all of this, my son called to say he and his girlfriend of 6 years are engaged!
Yay! I expect to be around for this wedding in 2013, for sure.
-
Congrats! My younger dd is getting married in 2013 too. The vacation sounds lovely. Enjoy.
