Cosmetic things that worked for me - sharing girly stuff

Hi TwoHobbies, not a stupid question at all!
The lashes are a little self adhesive, and have to be taken off the plastic card they are attached to with tweezers. You just add a tiny drop of glue to the edge, don't overuse or you'll get a blob. Hold the eyelash in place for a few seconds and then let it go, and move onto the next one.
You just gently pull the lashes off. If it a continuous one you just lift the outer edge and gently pull toward the inner eye, and if singles, just tug till they come off. The glue is a rubbery consistency when it dries, sort of like the glue they use to attach things into magazines. I don't know what that's called, but has a similar texture, and a lot of give. When the eyelash is of, gently remove the glue from the back of the eyelash and replace it into the cuved card or box. Just use a normal eyemakeup remover on your lid to make sure there isn't any residue left from the glue, and to remove any other makeup left behind.
Some lashes come with normal white glue, but there are some now that have black glue that can't be seen if you are a little heavy handed with it, or you wear dark pencil or eyeliner.
So glad I could help!

Iago, I have large eyes as well and find I need the bottom lashes to have mascara on them to kind of define the end of my eyes. Sounds dumb when you read it, I guess. Kind of like glasses that have only a top or bottom frame. They make the eyes look unfinished. I'd not had luck leaving my bottom lashes out, but have tried. I also have such dark circles that I've been accused of having a black eye!! I just use whatever I'm putting on the rest of my face, be it just powder or foundation and it's a natural looking coverage. Then the mascara sort of says "eye". Do you use a liner on your bottom lid???
-
Yes if I do use liner on the bottom and top. That's why I don't need mascara on the bottom. My dark circles are too bad. The product I use might not have enough coverage for you but I love it. I purchase mine at Sephora but here is the Givenchy link: linky
… and my glasses only have top frames

-
Lago, Thanks for the dark circle makeup suggestion, I have very dark circles, worse when I am tired or have alot of allergy issues...I use my regular make-up on first then a slight brush of bareminerals cover.
I know you said it might not have enough coverage, but I will at least see it in the store.
Anyone else have a good concealer?
-
What I like about it is it doesn't go on too heavy. I used to use one by Lacome that wasn't too bad either, also pretty good at hiding that occasional zit. It has better coverage: linky
-
AHA!!! I KNEW you had to put someting on your bottom lashes and a liner would definitely do it!!! I am still having a lot of luck with my coverup of whatever foundation/powder I'm using. I find it helps when I don't have any makeup on at all as I look "similar" to myself, just not as bright.....hehehehheehe.
I have tried a liner and am very happy with it, so thanks ladies!!! I find I can leave it on for ages and I don't need to top-up my mascara, so much less yanking at my lashes!! And yes, Iago, I use it on my bottom and don't need to always use mascara. I'll get better at it as I use it, as it has a slim side and a wider side depending on which way you hold the wand. Without glasses it's been a crap-shoot what I'm going to get but I just try to match on the other side what I just gave myself!
-
Barbe, what eye liner are you using that you can leave on?
-
I got a cheap liner from Walmart, probably a Revlon or something and just don't wash my eye area at night.
-
I saw this article the other day where makeup artists test drugstore cosmetics. They rated the Almay eyeliner highly. I bought the Revlon whipped creme foundation based on this article and I like it a lot. Next I may try the Neutrogena concealer, but I couldn't remember the name when I was at the store.
http://www.latimes.com/features/image/la-ig-drugstore-beauty-20130728,0,7068784.story
It's kind of nice to have recommendations for products that don't break the bank. I can't tell you how many $40 or $50 foundations I have bought that sat in my drawer.
-
Great link TwoHobbies!!! I have used drugstore cosmetics all my life and always get compliments!!! I just can't see the need to pay more for the same look. With clothing, quality makes a difference in the way a garment hangs, drapes and wears, so that makes sense. But not in something you only wear for half a day!!! Nice to see Revlon, Maybelline and CoverGirl all get good marks as those are what I use.
ANYTHING that says "Photo Ready" is AMAZING!!!! There are "highlights" built into the creams and powders and your face just glows. Definitely worth the $13 for the foundation. I hate a "wet", shiny look for a foundation (just moisterized look?). My cousins wear their makeup that way, as their mom did. Just looks oily to me and I want to wash their faces!!!
-
Barbe, I admit I'm just a sucker for the cool packaging and ad campaigns! Well there is one advantage to buying a more expensive makeup - testers and makeup advice. Color tone is always the issue for me, so I like places with testers or makeup advisors, although its not fool-proof either. I can't do yellow based at all, and I don't know by the beige, ivory, buff, marshmallow, merigue type descriptions. But Revlon had a great site that helped me determine the correct foundation, so I did it and didn't goof up this time. Now if only they would name their concealers the same names as the foundation, then I could tell what concealer to buy. But no, they are different. Good grief.
-
I can't vouch for this site but it was on some makeup review from Yahoo. It does require member login BUT just google the makeup you want, pick the Makeup Alley review and it goes right to the review. Don't know know why it won't post as a link. Sorry.
Me too about makeup. If it doesn't come from Target, WalMart or the drugstore with an occasional foray into Ulta it's not on my sink. Why don't they package new makeup in those little tester bubbles any more? Do you think they weren't cost effective?
I know about the color thing. I tan easily, had dark brown hair now white. But with foundation/concealer I wear very light colors otherwise it looks like I forgot to wash my face. Maybe my face doesn't tan as well as my arms. LOL.
Thanks Two Hobbies for the article link.
lago - I know you come on here regularly. I think you use the Anastasia brow kit. What color do you use? I have dark brown/black brows but getting white, greenish brown eyes and dark brown now white hair with a few dark streaks still. Looking for something to fill in. Using Revlon brow now which is OK. Just thinking the color you use might be good for me. I have not actually looked at the colors at Ulta but might next trip into town. They just look so light on the net pages I looked at but then I guess my Revlon color would too. Thanks.
-
luvmygoats I use the darkest one they sell: Ebony. Remember that since it's a duo you can mix the color putting less dark in the areas that have more brows.
-
lago - Thanks for replying. I will look for the Ebony color. Now I have some place to start with. In case anyone is looking for "Revlon" brow color, I misspoke. It is Maybelline. I don't even know what I'm using. LOL.
-
luvmygoats You can go into Nordstrom and try it out. I hear they sell it there (as well as Sephora and Ulta). Nordstrom is based in your state so I'm sure there is one near you.
-
barb1958 and luvmygoats - I'm a drugstore makeup kind of gal too. I'm transitioning to paraben free makeup which is going to be pricey. Oh well.
Has anyone found a good paraben free waterproof mascara?
-
GGG, I wouldn't worry about the tiny amount of parabens in make-up. Seriously. I think it's more dangerous for the test animals!! And, we're not ingesting it. If you're using a lotion with parabens, change it, as it's meant to absorb into your body. But how could mascara hurt you?
-
GlobalGirly the Tarte line I believe is all paraben free. Of course its not in the drugstore. Also, Sephora frequently lists in the description when something is paraben free, and sometimes they show the ingredients.
I'm kind of like Barbe, I try to concentrate on things that are used on my skin and I'm kind of freaky about lip gloss and lipstick. Although I just realized I didn't check the Revlon makeup I just bought and I think I have throw away the box too.
Just thought of this too. Are you familiar with Environmental Working Group? They rate cosmetics. Google EWG.org skindeep.
-
barbe1958 - You make a great point about the mascara. I've been using Maybelline Great Lash for years. I don't want to give that up.
-
Ok, so the talk about mascara has me thinking. Since even the mascara that is 100% waterproof comes off on me like a raccoon after 5 hours, I am thinking of forgetting the eyeliner and trying mascara instead. I have spent about $40 now on eyeliner, it all goes to my daughter so it is not wasted, but enough is enough. So onward to mascara I go!
I also am very concerned about creepy things being in my skin care, so I am very careful to buy the right body lotions and even face cremes, but I think since so little eye liner is used, or mascara, it would not be a priority. But Lipstick is a bit priority for me and right now I wear Primitive...
I love this discussion.
-
I just checked the Primitive website. So much makeup to try and so little time! I found a few days ago that 100percent pure also has a makeup line now. I really like their lotions which truly are natural. So I might try some of theirs next.
-
Crystal, I sometimes use eye shadow as a liner with a stiffer brush (or sponge tip) close to my lids. I get a colour group with a very dark brown or black and use that. Much softer, as well. I have to be careful or I look `sinful`if I`m heavy-handed!
-
Can't believe I just stumbled onto this thread , wish I'd found you all sooner!
Although I've worn makeup all my life, I have to say I never paid as much attention to it until I didn't have eyebrows. Like so many others, Look Good Feel better was so helpful to me. My eyebrows have not really come back pfc (neither did my hair.) I have tried so many brow products, including anastasia, which is a little too red for me. What I have settled on are two products, a very thin pencil from MAC that exactly matches my light hair color and a waterproof eyebrow pen from Stila.
I still use a washable waterproof mascara from loreal that actually stays on and does a pretty good job with my puny eyelashes. MAC also has an soft eyeliner pencil that I have in two colors that also stays on pretty welleven with my teary eyes. -
I used to wear black Maybelline liquid eyeliner for years and years. Then my wrinkly eyelids made it impossible to get a smooth line.
Now I use a thin pencil liner, and over that, I use a small, chiseled brush and put matching powdered eyeshadow over that.... it seems to last all day without ever giving me racoon eyes. Several people asked about Zenni - I have used them for years, and probably have more than 30 pairs of glasses in all sorts of shapes and colors. With prices starting at $6.95 (which includes frames AND lenses) it's easy to just try them out once, and if you like them, go for it.
I have a VERY strong prescription with astigmatism in both eyes, plus bifocals. I took several pairs of Zenni glasses in to my Optometrist to check out the prescription, and he said that all of them matched perfectly to what was written on my prescription.
The only difference was that I hadn't paid $500 per pair, as I would have at Kaiser.
I'll post some information I wrote for a friend that might make it easier to navigate the Zenni site.
-
HOW TO NAVIGATE THE ZENNI SITE
The site you want to go to for glasses is http://www.zennioptical.com/
The first thing you want to do is to go up to the top, under “My Account” and register. This will allow you to do several things. I’ll explain in a minute.
The second thing you want to do after you register is to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page, where it says “Help”. This will give you TONS of information on how to order, how to measure, FAQs, etc. There is even an 800 number you can call to talk to a live person.
Next, you want to look at glasses. But there are over 3,265 different pairs to look at. You’ll need to narrow down your search a bit.
On the left hand side, you’ll see a column where you can check off things you want to look for. The prices, I’d leave alone. (The price you see includes both frame and single vision lens.) Since they are so cheap, you’ll want to see frames in all price ranges.
Next, you can choose single vision or bifocal, and if you want bifocal, you can choose a lens with a line or with no line. They don’t make trifocals.
The next box says to check off “single” or “dual” and asks you to put in your PD number. I always check off “single” because I don’t know what “dual” means. I know it’s explained somewhere on the site.
PD stands for Pupillary Distance, and that is the measurement in millimeters, between the exact centers of your pupils. There is a very good explanation of this under the “Help” menu, and there is even a downloadable ruler you can print up so you can measure it yourself.
Be sure to check off “Women’s” frames, otherwise you’ll be looking at ALL the frames.
As for “Type”, “Shape”, “Material”, “Style”, and “Size” I usually don’t check anything because I want to see everything. But you may already know what you want.
The colors choices are endless.
Now comes the fun part – checking out new frames. Once you find a frame you like, hover the mouse over the picture and you’ll see the words “Order” , “Add to Favorites”, and “Try On.”
I usually click on the small picture of the frame, and it brings up a larger one. This gives you more information about that frame, especially the exact measurements. This is very helpful when you’re just starting out.
I always measure my favorite glasses frames to see how wide they are , how long the temples are, how high the lenses are, etc. I figure if I get something similar, it will fit the same.
Next, you can “try on” the frames. There are a bunch of faces in the right hand column. Choose one that resembles you, or I think you can even upload a picture of yourself. Click on the green “Try On” button, and you can see how the frame looks on the model.
If you like it, click on “Add To Favorites.” Zenni will keep a database of all the frames you like – that way you won’t get confused when you’re looking at your hundredth frame.
Finally, when you are ready, you can order. You will be asked for all your prescription information. Fortunately, they keep all that on file, along with detailed information of each frame you order. Just be aware that they often discontinue frames – usually the ones I think are the cutest.
Happy hunting!!!
-
I've used zenni for years too. I wear unlined bifocals and have never really had a problem with zenni. When you get your rx, you can ask them to include your pd on the written prescription.
39 dollar glasses lets you print out a picture of their glasses that is actual sized. You can cut it out and get a pretty good idea of how they will look. Theirs are more expensive than zenni though. -
Hi. Just found this thread. Just wanted to HIGHLY recommend LASHURIOUS!
I was a total skeptic but knew enough local women that used it and had amazing results.
I got it from my skin lady...$90...BUT, it lasts at least 3 months.
IF you are diligent and apply it TWICE a day -
Sorry. ..a call interrupted my post...
The stuff works like CRAZY! They tell u you should see a difference in 3 months, but I'm telling ya, I noticed at 3 WEEKS!
My lashes got TOO long so I had to stop using it for a while! !!!
It DOES also thicken lashes but the length was crazy good...;)
ALSO, it works on sparse areas of your EYEBROWS!
*Basically, it's similar to Latisse, but cheaper AND the lab took OUT the part that CAN cause darkening of your irises...;)
I had used Lashurious way before my BC diagnosis. ..:)
***The stuff TRULY works!
Use on BOTH the upper & LOWER lashline 2! times per day...wipe off any excess on surrounding skin area immediately...
Xo

I use waterproof mascara as an eyeliner because no pencil or liquid will stay on as long as the mascara does.
As far as paraben free lipstick goes, I found a replacement for my L'Oreal. Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense. They have a great selection of colors, and they are super pigmented! I love it. They're $20 on Sephora. However, if you know what color you want, you can find it way cheaper on eBay. I got mine for $11 including shipping.
