Good News for Us Slouchfest Attendees!
While some recent studies report that drinking alcohol may increase your chances of getting breast cancer, a recent study concludes that imbibing may decrease your chance of having your breast cancer spread. I've pasted a few paragraphs from the MSNBC article below, and I'll put the link to the full article at the end. Weesa, expect me for Slouchfest again next year! Cheers!
Although drinking alcohol appears to increase the risk of developing breast cancer, drinking may be beneficial for those who already have the disease, a new study of mice suggests.
Of the mice in the study that had breast cancer, those that were given moderate to high levels of alcohol had fewer instances of cancer spreading to other parts of the body than alcohol-free mice did.
. . .
Mice who drank water spiked with a high dose of alcohol were 60 percent less likely to develop metastases in their lungs than those that drank plain water.
Some protection against metastases was seen in mice in the moderate-dose group, but none was seen in the low-dose group.

-

-
Glad to be the bearer of good news, Weesa! Wish I could join you in that nice little pub on the corner! But since I can't, I'll toast your continued good health by wetting my whistle tonight with a bottle of Black Hawk Stout! Slainte mhor agad!
-
I am SO having that Pimm's cup on date night tonight! (and, at a silent auction fundraiser tomorrow night hahaha)
-
Ditto, Diana and weesa!!!! Great post celtic, we all have way to much guilt. We need to have a lot more fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happy thanksgiving eneryone, and Cheers!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
THANK YOU!!!!! Now I can feel less guilty if I have a glass of wine.
-
Hi, I'll toast to that. SharonH
-
I just bought a bottle of wine yesterday. Cheers to everyone and thanks for posting.
-
Bless those little mice. I can actually have a glass of wine -- yahoo -- popping a xanax sometimes just doesn't cut it ;o)

Weesa....
You wrote: Always wondered how come I have done so well when I've been so...well...naughty. Amazing.
Isn't a bit of "naughtiness" essential in life??? In fact, I always thought that some sack time was critical to my therapy.
The same goes for wine. Did a birthday ride for a cycling club member today which repaired to the pub for "cake and ale". Guys wore tutus too.
I didn't go through the chemo/radiation hammering to live like a hermit/monk on the other side.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Love those mice too. - Claire
-
Thanks for posting this information...YAY for those little mice and Yippee for fun..Oh and it is more fun to be naughty than nice!!
-
Claire--I like that: "Isn't a bit of naughtiness essential in life?" Here's a toast to you. I'll drink to that...
Not real sure about the guys wearing tutus, tho.
-
Yeepie! Thank God for BC research....I should be safe and ok then
-
Hi girls, I'm new to this website. So much going on, and so many threads! I was looking for ladies with similar interests, such as biking. I only searched "cycling" and found this thread. Celtic, is this Slouchfest a ride you do? Who would have thought that living a healthy life style and exercising, one would get BC? Are we being naughty, as in having some wine? I'll join, in that case.
Clare, what's the significance in the tutu's while riding? I am with Weesa, why are guys wearing tutus? That sounds odd.
Celtic, so glad you posted this study, great work.
-
This is the kind of research I like to hear about! I'll toast that news! Thanks for sharing.
-
It was the "Tutus and Tiaras" ride for a cycling lady who is celebrating her birthday this weekend. The guys joined in.
I did another ride today. The ratio was on the money: three guys and me. Nippy/frosty, but just glorious. I was toasty as the only one dressed for the weather.
Just finished a delish dinner w/wine to help with tired muscles

I do other "naughty" things as well. But prefer a comfy mattress and covers.
Need to get my tired hide into bed as had a full day. Beyond fun though.
Need that beauty sleep for my face and to dream up other fun stuff. - Claire
-
Claire - I am trying to envision the men in tutus and tiaras but just can't picture it. And three guys? Would you like another, I have one that I am willing to give away lol. What other naughty things do you do?? JK!!! Nice to see a fellow "biker babe" here lol.
I am really enjoying this site and have had so much fun navigating.Still trying to determine the definition of a slouchfest.....but the time has come for me to put on my jammies and get to bed. Nice to meet all of you!
-
cycle-babe - At Slouchfest, the only thing we ride are barstools!

It's kind of hard to explain in short. Below is a link to the original thread weesa posted:
http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/67/topic/771501?page=1
There is no "official" Slouchfest; it's just a title I gave to lovely evenings spent at weesa's pub imbibing in spirits, good food, and excellent company.
-
I think I just fell in love with mice - who knew?
Cheers, Sandy
-
I am just virtuous enough to exercise prior to joining the "slouchfest". Perhaps, my New England upbringing, but nothing like a brisk walk in the cold prior to having a hot toddy to warm up. That sort of thinking.
Seriously, it really is about enjoying life. So I cover the basics, and then do fun stuff, spiced with a bit of "naughtiness". For example, I had some tea biscuits covered with white chocolate after slugging down a salad of chick peas with oil and vinegar dressing for lunch.
I get grumpy if I can't operate this way. Yes, bless those mice.
Reminder that some good wine sales on this week. Guess where I'm headed? - Claire
-
CHEERS! Thanks for posting
-
Hi, Yes, bless those mice. Just finished my daily walk. Now headed for that glass of wine and some good dark chocolate. Life is good. SharonH.
-
Thanks for explaining the slouchfest, that is great! I thought it might have been a cycling event. Chillin on a barstool sounds like a bit more fun.
And yes, Sharon, God Bless those mice is right. I lift my glass to them and say "CHEERS"!
Claire, I also do a lot of cycling. It has not been as fun lately as always rode with my DH but I am so mad at him. If we ride, I may just cut him off and make him ride of a cliff. Glad you were talking about tea biscuits when referring to naughtiness. You had me worried girl, you and three guys with tutus? Hmmmm. Don't know what to think of that.
Anyone up for happy hour at BCO?
-
Slouchfest, for me, was tempered with a hike/photography shoot in the DuPont State Forest early the next morning. I'm still a slouch in training. I'll have to get the ants out of my pants before I can call myself a slouch professional!

Happy Hour at BCO = Virtual Slouchfest. Pour yourself a strong one and join in!
-
Thank you, Thank you for posting this!!! I have been all consumed with this stupid study about alchol and BC. Of all the things I've had to give up, hair, boobs, etc. This has been the hardest and I didn't even drink all that much. A few times a month at most. However, is anyone else envisioning little drunk mice with breat implants?

-
If only every hour was happy hour lol. Odd, but I feel sorry for these poor lady mice with BC. Thank God that they are getting alcohol to help with their pain. lol Kar at them having implants.
Celtic, I will join you for a happy slouchfest, love it! I could use a few more drinks tonight. I am still afraid of drinking more than two but lately, have been drinking more than I did before cancer. Drinking a we bit too much. But I blame my husband. We relocated across the country for his job and I am ready to move back East without him. We have no children so that is a non issue. Sorry to complain, this is a slouchfest. Cheers gals. You are a fun group of ladies!
-
Erin....can you join a cycling club??? Just got back from a meeting where I am the membership person this year. Cyclists specialize in bakeries and microbreweries. Group rides are a ton of fun.
This way, you get your ride in first

Of course, "freezing your butt off" was one of the topics of conversation. I may be skiing next weekend. Will take that too.
Just a thought. - Claire

This is the true historical perspective on SlouchFest: During the month of October many of us here were disgusted with the amount of gross stuff for sale and the growing sense that people see breast cancer as something pink, cute, and fluffy.
At the same time, I was becoming increasingly uncomfortable with myself when reading about the great feats of many of the wonderful women here: exercise, cycling, being up on supplements, not drinking, being up on the latest preventative research, in general leading a healthy lifestyle.I finally confessed here that I was a breast cancer slouch. Surprisingly, I had a great deal of wonderful support from women who saw themselves as, well, slouches, too.
I proposed that every Saturday in October, in dishonor of Pinktober, I would get together with anyone who could make it to my little Irish pub in the mountains of NC, and provide free drinks and greasy pub food. All they needed to do was not wear pink and check their supplements at the door.Every Saturday in October I met with local women and we had a rousing good time. But, while there was local interest here, nobody threatened to show up from my stage 3 ladies.( I understood--the pub is a long way from anything). My local support group of debauched ladies are all stage 1, so I get lonely for some stage 3'ers.
Then came Celtic Spirit!!! She showed up, not wearing pink and lugging no satchels of supplements, and coined the name "SlouchFest," and ate unredeeming pub food and drank adult beverages, Of course, the next day she resumed her healthy lifestyle and went hiking in the DuPont Forest, and took a wonderful, soothing video of the waterfalls there.
So that is the story of the first ever SlouchFest.
-
Hi. Weeza and Celtic Spirit, I am still on that bus. I must have miss that stop. I still am ready to not wear pink and leave my supplements at the door. Ready for next SlouchFest. Weeza still like your theme song SharonH
