Carol, here is a tomato bulgar soup recipe I make all the time, Fall to Spring.  Cheap, easy and good.  I buy the bulgar out of a bin, but you can get it boxed, it lasts forever and puffs up to make tons of what you're cooking

    Gotta go, beautiful outside!

I didn't get the kayak trailer built last weekend (rain), so I took Friday off and took care of it yesterday.  I didn't have any shade to work in and it was probably 105F with clouds (high humidity) and then I had to go help at a football game where Sharon teaches.

This morning I noticed that my bending and stooping worked some apparently unused muscles.  Not sore...just a bit tight and stiff....

While at the store this morning, I got some baking pumpkins.  I figured the nice crisp (105F degree) weather would go well with pumpkin pie.

    peppers

Here's a pic of my peppers. Not pickled and not included are the purple and yellow ones (we ate them :)

It's a beautiful 73 degrees here today.  To celebrate, I'm making english muffin bread in the actual oven. For dinner we're having pizzas on the grill. I have some hot capicola and calabrese, olive tapendade, some very nice fontina and mozzarella cheeses and of course, an assortment of vegetables.  I'll also use the last of the garlic confit and some fresh basil from the garden. I used to grow oregano until it tried to take over the bed it was planted in. The oregano itself has now has been taken over by garlic chives, which I don't even remember planting. Oh well, the honey bees love the flowers.

If it stays cool I think pho will be in order.

Bedo, the soup looks good.  I saved the recipe and will try it when the weather gets a little cooler.

Nancy, it must be your influence causing me to buy a little box of mini poblano peppers at the farmers mkt today!

Also bought some fresh okra, which is cooking in a skillet with garlic and tomatoes.

The popularity of grass fed beef has made its way to Louisiana.  There were two farmers at the farmers' mkt with signs for beef.  One also raises pigs, lambs and range chickens.  Grass fed or not, I like the idea of buying from local farmers.

Carol, you must have been sending grass fed beef thoughts to me.... :-)

The local market had "free range" beef and I couldn't resist....One, that I studded with garlic and rubbed with a bit of salt, pepper and worcestershire sauce is in the oven.

I'll be adding corn, green beans, a salad and rolls.

Oh drat!! Another post lost as I was getting ready to put the finger on submit.

Letting the rest go, I will just say that we really enjoyed a kale pesto tonight in a "brown rice pasta" toss with shrimp and kalamata olives. Also had a caprese salad over a bed of lettuce. Had been meanijng to make kale pesto for a while. Was definitely worth it.

Eager to see what the Farmer's Market brings tomorrow.

Enjoyed hearing about your tomato score, Carrie.

Carole, thanks for sharing my "nerves" about the dinner. ;) I may have escaped disaster!

Tonight was actually a planned dinner. I had bought 2 lbs of tomatillos at the farmer's market and some cilantro from the Hmong farmers. Today I found some beautiful serranos at the farm. So, I roasted the tomatillos, chiles, garlic, and some onions. Throw it in the blender with some salt, water, and cilantro and presto! Roasted tomatillo salsa. Only 4 cups though, so I need to make some more.... but tonight it served as the salsa for chicken enchilladas. Everyone else got suiza versions. I marinated some onions and chicken and then threw it on a blazing hot pan. You know... this worked.

The kid was so tired when she got home from work. I know that glazed look anywhere. I had enough food for the both of them, and they took the offer. Sometimes, she just needs Mom to make her some supper.

Lacey, the kid absolutely gets to counsel and work with the kids this year! That will be the focus, though assessment is a component.I guess she was able to get this "best" placement since she has a masters degree while some of her classmates don't. I am learning quickly about this world.

Susan what a good mom you are! Lacey, I hate losing posts. Eric, sounds like a wonderful supper. Nsnce, I teally liked your POSTED PICS OF PURPLE PEPPERS! LOL

Carole, we buy from local fsrmers around here a lot. Good stuff.

Went out to c ay to celebrate my bday with 3 of my kids and my DDIL, (her DH, my oldest son had to work) . Went to the new restaurant in town. local food prepared right. It was delicious. I had Curried butternut squash soup. 3 mushroom and kale strogonof with noodles(ive been told this is a midwest or Wisconsin thing!) And for dessert we got the tabletop smores. With REESES PB CUPS as well as chocolate bars with the fixins and a small grill. Fun. And good! My younger don started work st midnight so the had to leave early so he could get back, but I was happy to see everyone. My DH had to go up to his parents house to get the gravestones finalized for his folks and do the yard work and repairs on the houses so he couldnt be there either. But he sent flowers so I forgave him. Also, they started me on the abx so I am at least on the way to keeping this reconstruction detour from being a long one. Sorry for this huge post!LOL Much love.

Monica  that sounds like a great night out with your kids.  I love seeing how the kids interact with each other as adults now. Happy Belated birthday and I hope this "last" surgery is your last! and that you heal quickly. And the dinner you had sounds fabulous.  Curried butternut squash soup? mmmm

Nance those peppers are beautiful....what will you do with them?

Yesterday was fun-filled...wineries in anew town by land, along with an art museum (my favorite thing to do)  then boat cruise on lake with apps, a stop at a winery where they had to come get us by kabota (long way up side of lake) then a campfire dinner of steak, chicken, and burgers  with all the extra fixins.  This cabin our friends rented was so quaint with a large table in middle (seating 8 of us) and huge fireplace kinda reminded me of a colonial home where the fireplace is in the kitchen. so much fun with all of us girls cooking and the men grilling, lots of wine and silliness.

Thanks Carole...I love reading of everyone elses adventures and how their lives are run coming from different parts of the country. Also love hearing about everyones families and jobs and all of the little things that have made us who we are.

Carrie, I roasted a bunch for the pizza. Some will go into sofrito, more will be roasted and served with olive oil and parmesan, some will be eaten raw and a few of the last ones will be stuffed. I'm going to miss them when they're gone. We eat a lot of peppers.

Bedo, one more to make you crazy.

I puree an onion, a habanero pepper, 2 or 3 cloves of garlic, a few green onions, a tablespoon or so of olive oil, a splash of red wine vinegar, a bit of allspice, mace, thyme, cinnamon, nutmeg, curry powder and black pepper, plus enough soy sauce and orange juice to make it liquid enough to be a marinade ..and marinade chicken in it over night before grilling.

The spice-heat level is medium by my standards...but is certainly enough to make a good excuse to have your favorite island beer "on standby"....

    Eric, that marinade sounds wonderful.

Apparently it's pork week at our house. I'm trying a pork loin roast in the slow cooker with balsamic vinegar, honey and herbs. I'm skeptical that the slow cooker will yield a moist loin roast, but I'm told it will. We'll see. I add several cloves of garlic, fresh rosemary and thyme and cut the honey by half.

We dug the rest of the potatoes yesterday and the green beans haven't given up yet, so we'll have the smaller spuds with some tiny green beans. A side of applesauce and two fresh peach mini pies will round out this feast.

Wheres my invite, auntieN??? That sounds marvelous.

Eric, waiting on that invite as well. Sounds delish. I would use a habenero, my husband would use a red bell pepper!!! LOL. Compromise and use one jalepeno.... LOL or perhaps leave out the pepper and add Surachia just on mine.... LOL

    OK....lost another full post....damn ipad!

Joyce, happy for your call from Michelle and so glad that all her "kids" got down to spend that precious time with her and DH.

Lamb burgers with all the fixings tonight, corn on the cob, and some sauteed beet greens that a farmer at the market asked me to take for free. Not exactly a tomato score, but we enjoyed them sauteed with onions, garlic and a thinly sliced white beet. I bought some tomatillos to try them in a salsa...or in a corn tomatillo soup recipe they featured at the Farmer's Market We'll see. Also, researching what to do with with the tops of the large leeks I bought...love that google search!

Seeing my MO tomorrow before she goes on a six week leave. hmmmmmm? She didn't look preggers when I saw her in May. I hope she is okay. I do need some help with this constant full body itching that is getting worse along with the inability to sleep at night for longer than a half-hour without waking up. Just not healthy! I was a walking zombie all day today after getting a total of less than three hours sleep last night. Would love to take a little break from this Tamoxifen...but I know she will not be thrilled about that idea. We'll see......

Eric and Nance, those posted recipes sound so absolutely delish!

Tonight I was on the PET/CT scan diet. Had a hunk of beef with some butter on top for dinner. So completely unsatisfying. Made some nice roasted potatoes for Mr. 02143. He declined the offer of fresh, steamed broccoli. Tomorrow morning, up at 4am, take the [damn] Synthroid, then breakfast of eggs at 4:30. Scan injection at 8am. "They" say I have to eat that breakfast, and have to finish at least 3 hrs before the radioactive stuff gets shot into my veins.

    I could never do a no-carb diet! Ever! I want a vegetable.

Today I made more dill pickles for the refrigerator. Used some of the previous batch to make Cuban sandwiches for lunch with the leftover pork. I also made six crusts for coconut cream and coconut meringue pies. Two are for a meeting I have tomorrow night and four are for our annual Relay for Life on Friday.

Dinner was a pretty simple baked chicken and butter baked corn with a salad. Since I had extra pastry dough, tomorrow night will probably be a quiche.

Although I hate the thought of summers end, I'm loving these cooler temperatures. I've missed my oven!

Good luck with your scans Susan.

Nancy- I agree the cooler temps are nice!

Carrie- Your story of your evening out was wonderful!

Life as usual has been busy, to top it off both DS2 and I are fighting being sick.  Last night was pot roast tonight was Bulogi (the pork medallions with a broth gravy and pineapple over white rice)  .  I am hoping tomorrow we will both feel better and he will not fight me on going to pre school.

For the last 13 years I have walked in the cancer walk for making strides.  I don't feel like doing it this year.  I always hate it but feel I should raise money for the cause.  What do you ladies think?  To walk or not to walk?

Susan - I had a PET/CT last week & the only instructions were - nothing but water for 4 hours before.  Of course I had a Breast MRI 3 hours before & that was also nothing but water for 4 hours before.  I was sure hungry at the end of the day.  I like the PET/CT test better than the MRI.  Good luck with your test.

Laurie - I'm thinking it's OK to skip the walk this year.  Especially with everything goin on with your boys this fall.  As Susan B. Love says, we have "awareness".  Now we need funds going directly to research for a cure.

I'm going to the Metastatic BC conference this Saturday since it's in my home town.  Should be very interesting.

And since this is the dinner thread - I must report that I can finally eat some limited things again.  I'm trying everything in very small quantities.  I had prime rib last Friday.  MO said I can start to eat raw salad & veggies again.  Nothing tastes like it should, but at least it doesn't taste like the inside of the garbage disposal.  Something better start tasting great to my mouth & not just my brain real soon.  I can't afford to lose any more weight.

Thanks for everyone's great posts.  I do read regularly even if I haven't been cooking or eating.  Thinking of Michelle.  Debbie - good to hear from you.  Hi to all.

Nancy, The usual medical reason-- because. Actually, you need your sugars to be below a certain number and vegetables are converted into sugar by your body. I will be injected with a radioactive solution, and the scan is taking pictures of the sugar uptake.

Different hospitals/machines seem to have different instructions. My hospital tends to have the latest equipment, and HATES false positives. I have to agree. This is one very expensive test. No one should do it twice due to non-compliance.

Five hours of sleep is simply not enough. I suspect that I will sleep in the chair during the hour between injection and scan. Heck, I ususally sleep during the scan too! This is the advantage of having the first scan of the day.

Susan  Good Luck on those scans! I agree. way too important to not follow the instructions and get it right the first time.

Laurie  Do what you are comfortable with. I think it is imp to raise money for the cure, but I am becoming so cynical about fundraisers and where the money is going. I do thank the good lord for the people finding the treatments that are keeping us alive longer, and I know that takes money.

Leftovers tonight of the homemade chicken corn chowder soup and tomato sandwiches.  I also made an apple pie from the apples on my tree.  this is the first year they have been big enough to deal with, plus the deer usually eat them all up.

Laurie, I hope you both feel better right away. That first year in pre-school can be brutal

    on everyone's health.

    Carrie, corn/chicken chowder sounds yummy.

Minus, I'm glad for you that you are able to start eating again and hope those taste buds cooperate so you can enjoy it! Good to see your post!

Saw my MO yesterday, and we continue to work on the problem with Tamox side effects.

Since I'm sensitive to meds, she is having me try a tiny bit of Atavan to see if I can catch some zzzzz's. Hopeful!

Temps have really gotten cool....brrrrr. Glad the sun is out!

Laurie, if you don't feel like doing the walk, then don't do the walk.  Like Carberry, I've gotten cynical about fundraisers.  I will donate/volunteer/fund raise for groups that I know (such as Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center), but I will not do any of it for Komen.  I'm really aware of cancer.  I want to donate to research for a cure - not awareness.

gumby - I'm with you. I also make donations to BCO and local fund raisers for cancer patients in financial need. Another good place in our area is the University of Washington, just designate the money for breast cancer research.  They are working on a vacine for BC.  They are actually to the point of human trials for a vacine against one particular strain of BC.

The thing with this walk was that my best friends family started it in our town back in 1997.  My friends sister was diagnosed stage iv at the age of 25.  The first walk had about 500 people- now it is thousands.  Since the walk started her sister has passed, her mother and my mother and I was diagnosed.  I walk with her every year.  She moved to St. John 2 years ago and this year is unable to fly back for the walk.  I am honestly just so sick of cancer- I hate all the pink and loud music etc.  To top it off the girl is a friend of mine who has sung the national anthem for the last 8 years and she is in the hospital with stage 4 brain cancer and does not have long to live.

To top it off a friend of mine has started a team walking in honor of me and my strength (?) and in remembrance of my Mum.  I have never worn a survivor ribbon and feel a little uncomfortable.

    Bleck.

    Taco Tuesday here.

    Laurie,

Maybe this year, you can make a donation in memory of your friend's sister, but skip the actual walk. Sometimes, you [in the big sense, not you personally] just have to walk away from a world that you didn't want to join. This year has been a big change for you and the boys. Focusing closer to home is another kind of strength.

PET scan is in my rear view mirror, but boy is my body totally whacked out! Sausage and eggs at 4:30am for someone who doesn't even eat food before noon is jolting. Not to mention the lack of sleep. I fell asleep in the tube! And then had a nap this afternoon.

Tonight I am making our "house" stir fry with pork and local broccoli. Thinking I will steam up a few dumplings as well. Early supper since I have figured out that the kids can make dinner at home on Mondays and Tuesdays. We are slowly finding the rhythm of our lives combined.

[Lacey, the kid did her first one-on-one counseling session at her school yesterday and she just loves her supervisor. Such a relief!]
