    Deb  that plant is beautiful.  Interesting combining tomatoes with apples, is the  dish sweet?  Cant think of what it would taste like.

    Husband did not like the spaghetti squash, and I was just so-so on it, ate mine with butter, salt and pepper.  thought if he covered his with sauce he wouldnt know the difference, but I cant fool him!

    Tonite was leftover steak and himefries. I ate one filers and half of the potatoes yesterday. I order medium rare, but they were rare yesteday, I like them rare but have been ordering them more done when Chemo and recovering. So when I reheated them quickly in a pan they were still med rare, Yum. I wouldn't have cooked at all tonight if I didn't have the leftovers, and would have eaten cereal again.

    Deb- Those tomatoes are so cute never saw them in that shape before bet they are so delicious. I have never heard of the tomatoe sauce with applesauce sounds interresting though.

    Michelle- Love that song "Cleaning my gun' reminds me when me and my sister snuck out one night when we were younger ( one of the stupid things i did when i was younger) and when we got back my dad was sitting on the porch with his shot gun ( for real) my dad is not mean just was strict and did not like the guy i dated back then. Wish i knew what he knew at that time, i ended up marrying him, and he turned out to be the biggest mistake ever except having my daughter of course.

    Today was a long day, me and DS sat up all night talking until 3 in the morning then had to get up at 6am to take her to the airport her flight ended up being delayed for 2 hours then we headed home when we got half way home she text saying her plane was still on the runway, for another 2 hours but she is finally home now. I cried so hard when she left it has been a long but wonderful 2 weeks with her. I slept all day and just woke up and made ham and cheese sandwiches for dinner. And a chocolate pudding cup.

    YOUR SPECIAL FOOD OF THE DAY!  FREEKEH

    I go to an Arabic grocers's... halal meats.. they make their own pita and have a huge selection of yogurts, produce, spices, PEAR soap (try it - it's a clear glycerine soap with a clean divine scent.  I love the proprietor and his sons,.. especially the grandfatherly owner (proprietor) who must be all of 80.  The first time he saw me, he swallowed and shed a few tears.  I said STOP! Anyway, he is cute.

    I have been introduced to so many foods there.  sumac, fenugreek - special gum for dry mouth people called mastic, rosewater, orange blossom water.. anyhoo....

    i saw a package of green grains and asked him what it was and he said "Freekeh - pronounced freaka".. a fire roasted package of green wheat kernels.  I asked him what you did with it and he said " oh - we love it - it is so delicious.  we have soup with it almost every nite..... made with a vegetable or chicken stock.

    so i took a box home and fixed just a 1/2 cup (dried) last nite.  it has a delicious, rather shocking flavor.  it really is fire roasted.  they burn off the chaff and the straw.  the moisture content of the grains keep them intact.  it has a super cool flavor. I will be  turning the grains i cooked yesterday into tonite's light soup. 

    because of my weight loss i have turned up the mayo and butter content of my cooking (BLTs with mayo)... surprisingly everyone seems to be losing weight in my family.  my lack of appetite must be catching.

    I think I will also try a tabouli made with these grains,  I stirred some of my freekeh into a rather strong vinegary cole slaw. last nite.. good for the freekeh, good for the slaw..  it was really good.  I'm thinking it would be really awesome with steamed and creamed (frozen) spinach.

    Deb...your picture is beautiful.  I am going to do a water colour of mine & I might try yours too.  What is that iron structure, your tomato "cage"...it looks very effective.   I had to use 2 wire cages for my beefsteak plant and it still wasn't enough.  Think I will try your interesting recipe too. 

      I have been using La San Marzano  diced tomatoes with basil.(from Costco) Tried them originally because they only have 1% salt & they are excellant. 

     apple:  That Freekeh sounds interesting but not sure where I would find it around here.

    carberry:  my DH won't eat spaghetti squash either but he absolutely loves the "Squash Puff" although I haven't used Spag. in it yet.

    Sure be happy when my rad SE are finished....itching & hurting like crazy...first time I have had to take pain meds since my surgery in May. and I have been doing all the right things.  Few more days to go I guess.

    Hello!  Does anyone make matzoh balls.. ?  I'm thinking I'll be making chicken matzoh ball soup tonite.  I bought some matzoh ball crumbs.

    Carrie- Sorry you didn't care for the speghetti squash its one of those things you ever love or hate. My DH does not like it either, can't fool him! Have you tried butternut squash? I like to bake it with some brown sugar and honey and a little cinammon, so yummy and good, even DH likes it.

    Seems like the weather is changing all of a sudden, the days are getting shorter and getting darker earlier, went from 78% weather to really foggy and cold here today. One of those days you just want to stay in bed and curl up with a good book.

    Apple- I have never ate matzoh balls before I don't think I have ever tasted it either.

    Wow, this thread is either so busy or no one is home. ;-))

    Hi, wow what a busy busy board this has been.   

    Apple - my Mum (although not Jewish) used to be a kosher cook and made matzoh balls all the time.  I have no idea.

    Yesterday I bought some peanuts, get home and they are unsalted.  Any ideas on how to make them salted ?

    Seems everyone is enjoying the last of Summer.  I know I am here.  Making the most of 2 weeks of feeling good before I start rads (October 4).

    Tazzy - if you take those peanuts and roast them in the oven at 275 with melted butter, seasoned salt and worcestershire sauce, you will create a taste like Chex Party Mix. 

    We're having tacos tonight...I made my own taco seasoning mix from this recipe:

    I added a teaspoon of cornstarch and will add 1/2 cup of water to the browned meat.  I hope the mix is good - I tried a different recipe a couple weeks ago and DH thought it was rather bland.

    LOL, Tazzy!  I know just enough to be dangerous!!!  Actually, my grandmother was making chex party mix (we call it "bibbits" in our family - I think it's a French-Canadian slang word for bugs) back in the mid-50s when I was a youngster, long before I remember seeing the recipe on the Chex boxes.

    That iron contraption was something I found in the shed, my Dad must have used it for something.

    Hi everyone!  Sorry I haven't been around.  I have been reading a little every day and trying to catch up and enjoying all of your posts.  We have been trying to enjoy the last of summer and also trying to get used to our new schedule with DS #1 starting school.  This past weekend we went to the lake for one last hurrah after soccer was done.  It was cool and breezy but we got lucky and by 5 the wind went away and we had a wonderful evening.  It does make me wonder how cool it will be for our last camping trip on Columbus weekend?!

    Tonight I made Shepard's pie.  I had a very busy and productive day and went through the kids clothes in their dressers and pulled all the stuff that didn't fit them and added things from hand me down totes for the new year.  Re arranged some furniture in my dining room and gutted a cabinet and re did my spice rack on top of working and going to PT.  Feels good to make a dent in things though.  I also (kind of) had to laugh.  I went to the basement to change the litter box and noticed a drip from a pipe.  Dh came home and I told him about it.  I have been complaining that I want a new toilet for the downstairs bath- the handle on it can stick and it has a weak flush.  Dh said it was fine....well the seal was gone on it or something so now it is in the garage awaiting the dump- he dropped it and chipped it!  So now I need to repaint the bathroom and get a new toilet in the next two weeks before my sons birthday party.  So wishes do come true- just not the way you wish for them!!

    All in a day I suppose....

    LOL Laurie! Be careful what you wish for I guess. I made eggplant lasagna tonight. It was good! I sliced, sweated and then baked the eggplant and used that instead of noodles. Didn't miss the noodles at all. Had some collard greens with it. I should have just put them in the lasagna. Next time.



    Apple, Ina Garten has a recipe for matzah balls that my MIL uses. It is lighter than the standard matzah balls. I think the recipe she used for those was just on the box of matzah balls. If I could post a link I'd find it and post it.



    We just booked a flight for Paris over Thanksgiving week. Will be going to Paris for 3 days, then taking the Chunnel to London for four days. DH has a friend in London who is having an affair, and I thought it would be ridiculous not to take the opportunity to visit Paris as well. I am so excited! Better get a passport, I am sure the time will fly by.

    Michelle- Just loved reading your answers to the 5 questions, so interresting even though we think we may know a lot about each other on here we really don't. It was nice to hear about your adventures and who you really are. I thought your idea of who would play you, (tina fey) and your DH would be (John goodman) so funny and cute. I love Saturday night live and if your family is like that, what a great life you have lol! I didn't know your DD went to SOU (Southern Oregon University) I did too! Where my dad lives now is only about 30 miles from there. Ashland is so beautiful. Thanks for the link so we could get a little more insight into your life. You are truely a unique and special person, I guess thats why we all love you.

    Kay - you will love that trip!  But three days in Paris is really not much time, you'll have a hard time choosing which attractions to see.  If you want to go to the Eiffel Tower, try to buy tickets to the top in advance (unless you want to climb the 700 steps).  When we were there, they had just one lift working so the lines were outrageous.  You won't want to waste any time standing in line.  Get your tickets for the Eurostar as early as possible.  Just like airline tickets, the least expensive tickets sell out early.  I think we paid $58 each way and it was the first thing we booked after our airline tickets.

    Debbie - yes, she went to SOU because when she was a junior, her AP English teachers took a group from her high school to Ashland for the Shakespeare festival (I think it's the longest running festival in the country) and they stayed in dorms at SOU.  She didn't really know where she wanted to go to school, and so she decided on SOU.  It is a beautiful setting, for sure! 

    I have to try and find the picture that my daughter says makes me look like Sara Palin.  I know it's from her wedding, which was ten years ago.  Pretty funny, really!

    Debbie  Yes, we do love the butternut squash, and acorn squash is a favorite. We gave the leftover squash to the dog...and she seemed to love it!  ha ha

    Michelle Loved reading your five question post.  We have a pull behind RV, so the gas is dependent on the type of vehicle you tow it with, it also alows us to have a vehicle to drive once we get to our destination. We do not camp much anymore, but when the kids were here, we travelled along the east coast, all the way to Florida and SC, Virginia, and Canada.  Saves money with a family to be able to eat "at home" part of the time.

    Laurie  Sounds like you had a burst of energy.  Love it when I get one of those days (rare these days, post Ca) It is such a great feeling when getting things all in order.

    Tazzy  My friend uses Michelle's recipe on pretzels and bakes them....sooo good.

    bedo - it is "talk like a pirate day" today! - that was you who enjoyed it, right?

    I make acorn squash for Thanksgiving - par-cook the squash in the microwave, then bake in the oven with a paste of brown sugar, cinnamon and butter brushed over the inside.  Also like to make an entree by stuffing them with regular stuffing, chopped apple and cooked spicy maple sausage, then bake.

     Specialk- I prepare mine the same way, forgot to mention the melted butter but I bake mine in some water in a pan. Will have to try the microwave version.

    LOL! I didn't realize that affair comment referred to me. DH's friend is such a great guy, I've only met him a few times but he is just one of a kind. He grew up very working class, one of 8 kids and a hard working dad. He is very talented and became very wealthy and successful. His mother recently died and he started a foundation in her name. The affair we're going to is a black tie gala for the foundation. I know it is going to be a lot of fun.



    Michelle, thanks for the tip. I will make that reservation tonight. I know three days are short for Paris, but both DH and I work full time and I use some of my time off for doctor's appointments and things for my daughter, so time off is limited. We could have spent all the time in London, but it's only a two hour train ride to Paris, so we decided to take advantage of it. We are used to whirl wind vacations where we are up and on the go constantly. We'll see the highlights, but we won't get to do everything. I actually kind of like it that way. I hate to be still on vacations, unless I am just laying on the beach. I'll need a vacation from the vacation when I get back LOL.



    I love the thread with the five questions. What a great idea. It is nice to learn more about people. And both you and Susan have such interesting stories. I can't believe she never uses processed foods. I wish I could get closer to that.
